Upstream now marked this as a duplicate of:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51231

workaround for 3.13 (maybe previous versions as well) is the kernel
option:

video.use_native_backlight=1

2014-01-15 Thread Thomas Christensen
Instead, you would want to utilize the kernel.org format and repost to
the linux-acpi mailing list with the latest mainline kernel results.

I did that already: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-
acpi/msg48469.html.

I have responded to this request:

[Bug 1181927] Re: [Aspire V5-431]13.04: Brightness control visible but does nothing

2014-01-14 Thread Thomas Christensen
Ok, a few questions.

I visited the url http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D
referened in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds under the
section Upstream kernels archive.

I downloaded the latest for saucy through Ubuntu-Mainline-Kernel-Updater
script KernelUpdateChecker.

So the kernel I downloaded should be upstream, yes? Either
KernelUpdateChecker doesn't download from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline or there is something that I don't understand.

Anyways, if the real problem is the oldness of 3.12 and I should test
it with 3.13-rc8 I will do so since it's just a few days old.

I also noticed this comment under the section Upstream kernels
archive:

The upstream kernels archive is located at the URL below. There is a
directory for each build. Note, if you are testing for a bug, please do
not use the daily folder, but use the latest mainline kernel at the
top.

So will

$ KernelUpdateChecker -r trusty

download and install the right kernel for me to use as the base of the
report?

[Bug 1181927] Re: [Aspire V5-431]13.04: Brightness control visible but does nothing

2013-10-20 Thread Thomas Christensen
3.12.0-031200rc6-generic

[ 14.025391] acer_wmi: Brightness must be controlled by acpi video
driver

The same thing.

ACPI thinks it can do the brightness but cannot, and with
acpi_backlight=vendor (to disable ACPI controlling brightness), only
the intel_backlight entry in /sys/class/backligt shows up and *is*
working.

So the kernel problem persist, they need to blacklist this laptop from
ACPI brightness, like they did with so many other Acers.

Now there is a desktop problem as well. It will not acknowledge
brightness provided by the intel_backlight entry, *or* the hotkeys are
ignore since the brightness overlay doesn't show up with the hotkeys
anymore (acpi_backlight=vendor or not).

[Bug 1181927] Re: [Aspire V5-431]13.04: Brightness control visible but does nothing

2013-09-17 Thread Thomas Christensen
Sorry I wasn't clear.

The test I made from the saucy DVD was with upgraded BIOS (1.22). It's
doesn't work right of the box, I am guessing that the kernel parameters
above would make it work. That's how I made it work on my current
raring.

Output is:

V1.22
03/15/2013

It doesn't work running from DVD. I am guessing acpi_backlight=vendor i
needed.

[Bug 1181927] Re: 13.04: Brightness control visible but does nothing

2013-07-04 Thread Thomas Christensen
With kernel 3.10:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.10-saucy/

I got this message in the kernel log:

acer_wmi: Brightness must be controlled by acpi video driver

So I edited GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/defaults/grub to look
like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor

and now it's now working.

[Bug 1181927] Re: 13.04: Brightness control visible but does nothing

2013-07-04 Thread Thomas Christensen
I installed http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.10-saucy/
and noticed the following message in the kernel log upon booting:

[9.293508] acer_wmi: Brightness must be controlled by acpi video
driver

So i added acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel boot parms, and now it's
working fine.

[Bug 1181927] Re: 13.04: Brightness control visible but does nothing

2013-05-21 Thread Thomas Christensen
I have installed 3.10.0-031000rc2-generic.

I am not sure exactly what to report for the following reasons:

1. I am now getting /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight which I didn't have
before, and adjusting the brightness by echoing to 'brightness' in that folder
works.
2. The hotkeys shows the brightness overlay but doesn't change the brightness.

So it's kind of fixed in that I can change the brightness, but at the
same time the hotkeys don't work.

I haven't messed with acpi_osi and acpi_backlight kernel parms.

Let me know what you think I should do for the next step.

My /etc/default/grub is:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=

Brightness control visible but does nothing on 13.04...

The brightness up down buttons shows the overlay brightness icon going
up and down but it does not change the brightness (backlight).

I have tried adjusting the kernel options acpi_osi=x and
acpi_backlight=y (that did work with 12.10) to make it work but to no
avail.

[Bug 314701] [NEW] ecryptfs Oops

[Bug 285536] [NEW] Abiword crashes on save as LaTeX

2008-10-18 Thread Thomas Christensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: abiword

Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10

abiword:
  Installed: 2.6.4-4ubuntu3
  Candidate: 2.6.4-4ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 2.6.4-4ubuntu3 0
500 http://mirrors.nic.funet.fi intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I expected it to generate a latex file, but instead it core dumped with
abort.

Here is the backtrace of the thread in question:
