[Bug 1862090] Re: installer crashed when installing the os

2020-03-18 Thread Tim Jones
The "mini" (Net) installer works perfectly for 20.04, whereas the
Calamaris installer always crashes complaining about not being able to
copy files...??

[Bug 1488254]

2016-05-06 Thread Tim Jones
I've been using the patched version for the past couple of days, no
issues so far.

But, I'm not one of the developers and don't know this code base and
just because it *seems* to work doesn't mean it's correct yet. I'm just
going to continue with what works well enough for me at the moment, with
patience.

2016-01-22 Thread Tim Jones
-1 for this being considered a feature request.

It's blocking anyone from updating their OSs in our company, which isn't
going to happen, so we'll likely have to switch everything back to g++
only.

I'm sure we're not the only ones.

[Bug 773078] Re: Should display the StickyKeys status in some way (a11y)

2014-06-28 Thread Tim Jones
Original bug report: “Reported by truant on 2011-04-29”
Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot release date: 2011-10-13
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin release date: 2012-04-26
Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal release date: 2012-10-18
Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail release date: 2013-04-25
Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander release date: 2013-10-17
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr release date: 2014-04-17
Today's date: 2014-06-28

I am astonished to discover that this “bug report” has been languishing here
unaddressed for three years and two months. So despite...
• the very valid comments about the crippled usability of Sticky Keys without a
modifier key status indicator, from multiple end users (which I fully endorse –
there are times when only logging out and logging in again will rectify an
unknown and non-viable modifier key latched/locked combination);
• “First-class accessibility for those with special interaction needs” being a
publicly stated aim for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin since at least
2011-10-20; [1]
• SIX missed opportunities to address this critical accessibility problem
between Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr
...it seems that Canonical either have a worse than useless bug-tracking system
(less likely) or assign the needs of people with disabilities a rock bottom
priority (more likely, but depressingly disappointing).

I've been using Sticky Keys on Apple Mac OS X for a decade, and
occasionally on Micro$oft Windoze, and on both OS's the modifier key
status indicators are a crucial component in making Sticky Keys work for
unidextrous typing and computer control. The OS X technique of 'sound on
modifier key-press' plus 'user-positionable translucent modifier key
icon overlays' to show the current latched/locked modifier key
combination is far more user friendly than the tiny panel icon in
Windoze. Yet a 'one icon per modifier key' panel applet for Ubuntu,
integrated into the System Settings Universal Access Typing
Sticky Keys, ought to be relatively easy to implement; indeed one end
user has coded a 'one icon per modifier key' panel applet, and although
it doesn't work on the Gnome Flashback environment I'm using, it does
show what's needed:

pic: » http://i.stack.imgur.com/TnURl.png
caption: Image starting from left: Icon, Shift, Locked Caps, Ctrl, Alt, Super,
Locked AltGr (Small circle to indicate locked state)
source: »
http://askubuntu.com/questions/402315/how-to-add-a-keyboard-modifier-state-applet-to-unity-panel

As an Ubuntu noob, I'm unfamiliar with how best to get Canonical's
attention drawn to fixing this problem. If more experienced Ubuntu
community members can suggest ways in which to get this long-overdue
error corrected, those of us who need a fully functional Sticky Keys
implementation would be most grateful.

[Bug 527666] Re: Waiting for /some/partition [SM]

2010-04-07 Thread Tim Jones
Hi,

I'm having the same problem as orgoj and some of the others on this bug.
Did someone create a new bug for this, possibly different, bug which
looks like this one?

Thanks,
Tim

[Bug 527666] Re: Waiting for /some/partition [SM]

2010-04-07 Thread Tim Jones
An 'grep swap' extract from /var/log/boot.log with mountall --debug:

local 6/6 remote 0/0 virtual 11/11 swap 0/1
try_mount: /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1 waiting for device
try_udev_device: block /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1
e26b43b0-7782-44da-9a8f-78c7955e3c74 (null)
try_udev_device: /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1 by name
run_fsck: /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1: no check required
activating /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1
spawn: swapon /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1
spawn: swapon /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1 [1021]
swapon: /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1: swapon failed: Device or resource busy
mountall: swapon /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1 [1021] terminated with status 255
mountall: Problem activating swap: /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1
mounted: /dev/mapper/lucid-swap_1
swap finished
local 6/6 remote 0/0 virtual 11/11 swap 1/1

Just a guess here... If each of the mountall discovered FSs are mounted
in the background by a spawned process (assumed from the logging) then
as /home is generally the largest mount on a default install and is
going to take the longest, could it be possible that it just happens
that as the swap mount has failed all but the /home has mounted ok but
mountall has given up waiting due to the failure and killed off the
spawned mounts?

[Bug 280667] Re: init.d/alsa-utils hangs waiting for /var to be mounted

2008-10-09 Thread Tim Jones
I think I may have had an old link laying around in my /etc/rcS.d dir
for alsa-utils. That may have been my problem as purging the alsa-utils
package and reinstalling has not replaced the link in rcS.d.

Can probably close this bug if this is confirmed.

[Bug 280667] [NEW] init.d/alsa-utils hangs waiting for /var to be mounted

2008-10-09 Thread Tim Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-utils

During boot /etc/init.d/alsa-utils, or more specifically /etc/rcS.d
/S20alsa-utils, loops forever in:

# Wait for filesystems to show up
while [ ! -d /usr/bin -o ! -d /var/lib/alsa ]; do
sleep 0.2
done

As my /var is a mount point which has not yet been mounted, it never
gets mounted as the above loop blocks all other startup scripts,
including the mounting of /var. Deadlock.

Should all local FS mounts be mounted earlier, or alsa-utils started
later, I'm not sure. This is a similar problem to one I may have found
in resolvconf not being able to access files on a not yet mounted dir,
so maybe it's the local FSs that should be mounted earlier.

Although I'd add the '--local-port 0' option to ensure the respawned

[Bug 249802] [NEW] Restart of vpnc when not requested to stop.

2008-07-18 Thread Tim Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vpnc

Although an incredibly useful app vpnc isn't (yet) perfect and is known
to just drop it's connection and die at times. This is a known problem,
with no known solution, yet. But in the meantime...

How about an option to auto-restart vpnc when it dies?

The conditions, as far as I can tell, for a restart to happen would
simply be: If vpnc exits with exit code 0 and has not been requested to
stop, then restart it.

Currently I need to use a script running in the background to do this
for me as vpnc dies many times during a working day. Setting local port
to 0 and disabling DPD are also needed here too (see bug #206000 bug
#112406 bug #239570).

[Bug 220900] [NEW] Can't change foreground colour

2008-04-23 Thread Tim Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Hi,

When using either a black panel background, or a transparent panel
background with a black (or dark) desktop background, the applets
(window list, clock, gnome-main-menu, etc.) use a black foreground
colour rendering their foreground unreadable.

Adding a tab in the options to set the foreground colour, alongside the
existing tab to change the background colour, would maybe fix this?

[Bug 210210] [NEW] update-manager ignores locked versions

2008-04-01 Thread Tim Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager-core

Hi,

I needed to patch a bug in vpnc and so built a package via apt-src,
installed it, and had to lock/hold it's version in both synaptic, and
aptitude, so that it didn't get updated by either package manager.

The update-manager notifications seem to ignore the locked state of the
package and offer it as as upgrade and so I always get a notification. I
assume this is a bug, or, if it isn't, then am I missing a way of
syncing different package managers package states?

[Bug 207628] [NEW] Autohide sometimes needs a reminder to hide...

2008-03-27 Thread Tim Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Often my panel (set to autohide) does not autohide when the pointer has
moved away. This maybe because I'm using an app which opens a dialog
window when launched and it's confusing gnome-panel.

The panel will auto-hide when I move the pointer over and then off of
the panel, but doing this so often is fairly anoying.

Would it be possible to auto-hide if the mouse is not within the bounds
of the panel and not just on some pointer exit event?

Just tried this again, and it seems to work now!

Didn't need to change the source file either, so can probably close this
bug.

Cheers,

[Bug 128874] Tooltips don't disappear when pointer moved away.

2007-07-28 Thread Tim Jones
Public bug reported:

When a tool tip appears after hovering over a gnome desktop tool-tipped
anything, you can't select anything else whilst the tool-tip is still
open.

This is easily visible if you hover over a application menu item, wait
for the tool-tip, and then move to another menu item. The selection will
not change whilst the tool-tip is visible.

Re: [Bug 128874] Re: Tooltips don't disappear when pointer moved away.

2007-07-28 Thread Tim Jones
Hi Martin,

I've just installed Gutsy (
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/current/gutsy-dvd-i386.iso), and upgraded all
packages to latest.

uname -a:
Linux gutsy 2.6.22-8-generic #1 SMP Thu Jul 12 15:59:45 GMT 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

I've just started up apache and put a recording of the problem on my site.
Thought it may be too big for an attachment, I'll try and leave it there for
a while, unless it can be moved somewhere else. It's at
http://www.mr-dog.net/files/out.ogg.

Cheers,

Tim

[Bug 101905] Re: Emacs 'zone', should NOT be enabled by default.

2007-07-05 Thread Tim Jones
Hi, just had time to check. The culprit was the emacs-extra package turn
on zone mode. Just a little unexpected. I've removed my emacs-extra
package now. It's not a 'ubuntu supported' package so I guess it's not
too important!

[Bug 110900] Re: Audio doesn't work on Feisty Fawn

2007-05-09 Thread Tim Jones
Well, I seem to be in a similar situation as Mr. Fox. The errors are the
same, anyway. Audio works, but only for one application at a time.

From mplayer, the errors I get when playing a file: http://pastebin.ca/479913
And for trying to play another file simultaneously: http://pastebin.ca/479916

For Mr. Chen: I ran the script from the linux-sound site and received
this output http://pastebin.ca/479898

[Bug 101905] Emacs 'zone', should NOT be enabled by default.

2007-04-03 Thread Tim Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs21-common

Zone uses a lot of CPU when it activates. I think it should not be active by
default.
I often leave emacs open on my home machine, which also hosts a few apache
servers. Having to disabled things like this should not have to be done, they
should be optional extras to enable if you want them. This one, zone, in
particular is odd as it seems to try and be a screensaver for an individual app
(emacs), and not the monitor. If all applications did the same, imagine what
would happen!

Sorry, this got to me a little, and really really irritated me, probably
a little more than necessary :(
