2013-03-01 Thread Tom Jaeger
This should be fixed in git now; I've uploaded a rc for a new version to
the PPA, which is getting built right now (i386) / should be built in a
few hours (amd64). Please test, the fix needs to get in before beta
freeze on Thursday.

[Bug 1106922] Re: Impossible to set keys with movments

2013-02-18 Thread Tom Jaeger
Thanks for reporting. I just upgraded to raring to check this out.
This is pretty bad; if I had to guess, I would say the underlying cause
is gtkmm not being compatible with the GObject object system. The only
solution I can think of right now is porting a bunch of c++ ui code to
vala, but I'll investigate. Importance should be set to 'High'.

[Bug 986208] Re: Compiz does not remember user preferences upon system restart

2012-11-13 Thread Tom Jaeger
Here's a backtrace from when the options get reset, but I can't quite
make sense of it. It looks like compiz gets notified that the gsettings
key 'org.compiz.core close-window-key' (which I can't find in dconf-
editor!) got changed. As a response to that it sets
'org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings close' to the new value (which happens
to be the default value), thereby overwriting the user-set value. Which
I think would be a terrible idea even if the user had intentionally
changed close-window-key.

I don't think gsettings-data-convert was the cause of this bug (still
there is no reason to run it on every login). This appears to be
compiz' fault, and should probably be a dup of one of the following two

[Bug 1069177] [NEW] Bogus insensitive events after clicking on different date

2012-10-20 Thread Tom Jaeger
Public bug reported:

The events indicator-datetime shows below the calendar depends on the
selected date. When a new date is selected that has fewer associated
events than the current date, some of the old events remain in the list,
but are shown as insensitive rather than deleted. If for example the
current date has events 'A B C D E', and the user clicks on a date with
associated events 'X Y Z', then indicator-datetime will show the events
'X Y Z D E' with the last two events grayed out. Tested on quantal.

[Bug 1068960] [NEW] crash when touch grab fails

2012-10-19 Thread Tom Jaeger
Public bug reported:

If another client already has a touch grab on the root window, libgeis
crashes, taking unity down in the process.

To reproduce, compile the attached program, and then add it to the
startup applications. The command should be '/path/to/touchgrab 2 0
reject'. Then log out and log back into unity, which results in the
crash. Tested on quantal.

This might be the underlying cause of bug #1038455.

[Bug 1001429] Re: scroll doesn't work with my touchscreen

2012-10-16 Thread Tom Jaeger
The original plan was to release 0.6.0 with touch support (including a
fix for this issue) shortly after 0.5.6. But it turns out that touch
support in the X server isn't as mature as one would hope, and I'm
currently working on identifying what the issues are. So it'll probably
be a while before I can enable touch support (it will most likely have
to wait until the next X server release). If you're feeling
adventurous, you can check out the current state of affairs on the
'next' branch in git.

Now the purpuse of the switch to raw events for 'scroll' was so that
relative devices wouldn't hit the screen edge. There is obviously no
way of avoiding that for touch screens, so going back to regular grabs
for absolute devices will fix the issue for now. I've applied a patch
to the easystroke-0.5 branch, and this will be part of the next point
release.

Chris,

The message is addressed directly to the recipient (eg, not CC) AND the
message is not low prioirty AND the message wasn't automated AND the
message is not from a mailing list

It appears that this check is case-sensitive, so the envelope won't turn
blue if the email address (as entered by the user) contains upper case
letters.

I agree with the sentiment that there should be an option to have the
envelope turn blue for any email in the inbox folder.

[Bug 788980] Re: Easystroke doesn't detect movement from any device

2011-06-04 Thread Tom Jaeger
Thanks for the debugging output. Everything seems to be working as intended in
those examples (although I admittedly did a horrible job of documenting how
things are supposed to work). Instant Gestures trigger the moment the button
is pressed. This is primarily for mice that have lots of buttons and allows to
either bind an action to the button or several actions to the combination of
the trigger button and any other button. I use it to enable scrolling using
the side switch on the wacom pen. Click-and-hold gestures trigger when the
user clicks and then holds the button for a certain duration without moving the
mouse. This is the only possible gesture in this case. The warning message in
this case is bogus.
The normal behavior is to have the radio buttons set to Timeout -- I have no
clue why I chose such a misleading term for this though.

Thanks Tom for your bug report and your proposed patch.

The issue with your autohide fade-progress implementation is that for a
y given position, moving the other dimension (until progress_x
progress_y) has no effect at all on the hide/show progress, which can be
seen a relatively weird to the user. That's why we base your
implementation on the largest dimension available.
This implementation (as of the first patch) is functionally equivalent
to the original implementation, but much less convoluted, so the issue
you raise exists in the original code already.

@Tom: hum, I don't see how it exists in the current code. I'm
calculating the distance between 1:1 and the edge in diagonal (until the
edge of the screen on a given x *and* y position, not horizontal or
vertical. Your function is only taking care either of the horizontal or
of the vertical or do I miss anything?

It does use the x and y position in the calculation, but the result of
the computation hypot(x,y)/max_size_on_position is independent of the
x-coordinate if (x,y) is below the diagonal emanating from (0,0). See
the attached pdf.

Re: [Bug 695570] Re: Move Window doesn't raise window

2011-03-12 Thread Tom Jaeger
This is not correct. There is an option 'auto-raise' in the settings,
but it only works if 'click to focus' and 'raise on click' are both
disabled (this conceivably might be a bug, not that I think 'auto-raise'
is particularly useful).

This is not how it should be either. 'Raise on click' off means that
the user should have full control of the stacking order --- you raise a
window by clicking on its title bar. This is how every window manager
under the sun (including compiz!) implements 'raise on click'.

When click raise is disabled raise happens on a timeout. The way the
options works is confusing though, I agree - really there should be an
option for raise on timeout and it should be off by default.

This bug has not been fixed. Alt+Click should raise the window
unconditionally (just like clicking on the title bar does), irrespective
of what 'raise-on-click' is set too. This was also the behavior of
compiz-0.8. Patch is attached, please reopen.

I won't accept this patch because click raise should be disabled for
both the window *and* the titlebar in the case that the option get
returns false and that should apply even when moving the window. If
the titlebar is also raising the window, then this is something that
needs to be fixed in the decorators (maybe I need to add an integrated
option key to gtk-w-d and unity-w-d for this case)

Re: [Bug 539912] Re: current battery charge not easily accessable

2010-05-11 Thread Tom Jaeger
Please don't hijack this bug report. This bug is about the removal of
the battery percentage info from g-p-m, not about the way this
information is presented. If you want to argue tooltips vs. indicator
menus, please do so in bug #527458.

AFAIK, long press on a visual element emulates right mouse button click. But
there would be no harm in implementing both variants: either the menu element
for touchscreen users or the tooltip info for mouse/touchpad owners. And of
course, hotkey for me :) , I hope they won't get rid of that in future
 versions.
As for too big fingers, take a look at Android - even tiny and close webpage
links can be selected with a thumb in the Google's built-in browser. So I
think the matter is a good recognizing algorithm.

 Hi Tom,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Sorry if this wasn't clear before, the bug is specific to xserver-1.7,
so it was originally reported against lucid.

This is bug #539912. The state of affairs there is basically: The

taking up too much space.

This a hardware independent issue, so I'm not sure why an lspci-vvnn

There is still the issue of the actual error message, which certainly
shouldn't appear on the user's screen. Is this bug tracked anywhere?

On 04/18/2010 06:09 PM, Steve Langasek wrote:
The getpwuid_r() message is a generic warning that is displayed for all

[Bug 566375] [NEW] log spam when detaching a slave device

2010-04-18 Thread Tom Jaeger
Public bug reported:

Each time a slave device gets detached, the server logs the following
messages:

[mi] miSpriteRealizeCursor called for floating device.
[mi] miSpriteSetCursor called for floating device.
[mi] miSpriteSetCursor called for floating device.
[mi] miSpriteRealizeCursor called for floating device.
[mi] miSpriteSetCursor called for floating device.
[mi] miSpriteRealizeCursor called for floating device.
[mi] miSpriteSetCursor called for floating device.
[mi] miSpriteRealizeCursor called for floating device.
[mi] miSpriteSetCursor called for floating device.

This creates a significant amount of log traffic in combination with XI2 button
grabs on SDs, for example when using easystroke (this is after a few hours of
using X):

$ ls -lh /var/log/Xorg.0.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 819K 2010-04-18 22:16 /var/log/Xorg.0.log

This has been fixed upstream by removing the warning messages, which do
not apply anymore:

Metacity/gnome-window-decorator supports .svg, so this is entirely
possible. Besides, having blurry buttons is still better than having
tiny buttons that are next to impossible to click.

Could you elaborate on what the issue is here exactly? I did some
preliminary testing (see above), and the buttons scaled up fine (modulo
blurriness).
