[Bug 1647285] Re: SSL trust not system-wide

2018-04-28 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Wow, unified CA management would be awesome. No more fiddling around
with (and forgetting to correctly install/remove certificates in)
various applications (most notably in Firefox, Chromium, wget).

[Bug 1751047] [NEW] apt-dater-host doesn't correctly recognize available kernels -> please update to current upstream apt-dater-host

2018-02-22 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Public bug reported:

$ ssh ubuntu_xenial_machine
# dpkg -s apt-dater-host | grep Version
Version: 1.0.1-1
# apt-dater-host kernel
ADPROTO: 0.7
KERNELINFO: 1 4.13.0-36-generic

# zgrep KERNELINFO -m 1 -A 4 -B 2 /usr/share/doc/apt-dater-host/ADP-0.7.gz
The result line has the following format:

KERNELINFO: ${Code} ${Release}

The following codes are supported:
0 - The running kernel is the latest distri kernel. No reboot required.
1 - The running kernel is an distri kernel but it's older then the
latest

So apt-dater-host is telling us, that a new kernel is available on this
machine. Let's see:

# uname -r
4.13.0-36-generic

# dpkg-query -W -f='\${Package} \${Version} \${Status;20} \${Maintainer}

$linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 $4.13.0.36.55 $install ok installed $Ubuntu
Kernel Team $

So, no, in fact, there is no newer kernel image available. We do have
the latest kernel installed.

Now if we go and debug apt-dater-host, we find out, that the above
command (modulo the '\${Package}' name) is exactly what apt-dater-host
is, to retrieve the list of available kernel images.

Now why does apt-dater-host go wrong in determining whether there's a
new kernel?

It is because it iterates over that list [1] and compares the version
from `uname -r` with the version from the list. The problem here is,
that comparing the current installed kernel version with the version
from the the last line, i.e. :

# dpkg --compare-versions 4.13.0-36 lt 4.13.0.36.55

will yield

# echo $?
0

meaning, yes there indeed *is* a newer kernel available. The problem is
only, that linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 is *not* a kernel package, but
instead is a kernel *meta* package, that depends on the latest kernel...

Current apt-dater-host versions from upsteam improve the query [2] with
a:

| grep linux-image

Remember, the upstream query does not include the '\${Package}' field,
so what the grep does is to effectively filter out by the '\${Provides}'
field, which in the case of the meta package is empty. Only the "real"
kernel packages do provide a 'linux-image'.

Thus upstream's apt-dater-host works on Ubuntu, while Debian's
apt-dater-host doesn't.

If you update Debian's apt-dater-host then I think it will be pulled
into Ubuntu, and things should be fixed there. So I ask you to please
update the Debian apt-dater-host from upstream.

This is the same bug as https://bugs.debian.org/891092 which was closed
there because among other reasons "this is the wrong platform for Ubuntu
bugs I am closing it here."

Thanks.

[Bug 1115753] Re: Umount of Multiple LVM Snapshots Causes 'soft lockup CPU#0 stuck for'

2015-11-10 Thread Tomas Pospisek
So I'm reporting my current further findings here in case somebody else
than me stumbles upon this bug report in search of help.

I'll not create a new bug report as of now, since I'm still researching
the problem and I think there's no point in opening a new bug report if
it'll turn out to be invalid anyway.

So to the point: in my case the problem has been:

  8 05:02:51 foo kernel: [987432.148305] device-mapper: snapshots:
Invalidating snapshot: Unable to allocate exception.

after that umount goes berzerk:

  Nov 8 05:02:51 foo kernel: [987432.163602] Buffer I/O error on device dm-11,
logical block 11985789
  Nov 8 05:02:51 foo kernel: [987432.163638] Buffer I/O error on device dm-11,
logical block 11985790
  ...
  Nov 8 05:02:51 foo kernel: [987432.299393] EXT4-fs warning (device loop0):
__ext4_read_dirblock:901: error reading directory block (ino 3539872, block 0)
  Nov 8 05:02:57 foo kernel: [987437.577541] quiet_error: 4396 callbacks
suppressed
  Nov 8 05:02:57 foo kernel: [987437.577547] Buffer I/O error on device dm-11,
logical block 12622895
Nov 8 05:02:57 foo kernel: [987437.577609] lost page write due to I/O error
on dm-11

and now umount is hanging there with 100% CPU usage with no possibility
to `kill` it.

So one problem here is that the `lvsnapshot` is running out of
`exception` space. Thus I should either allow the snapshot to be
autoextended or to increase the `-L`size I have given it.

But even so, umount shouldn't get stuck on the ext4 FS. Since I was
`umount`ing without `-f` I will try that today and see what happens and
report back here hopefully.

[Bug 1115753] Re: Umount of Multiple LVM Snapshots Causes 'soft lockup CPU#0 stuck for'

2015-11-03 Thread Tomas Pospisek
I am seeing the same problem as reported here. My system and kernel are:

  Ubuntu Trusty 14.04
  linux 3.13.0-66-generic

Also, since implementing the "sleep 120" workaround mentioned in [1]
(thanks a lot for that markusj!), my box is able to do backups cleanly.

I'm also seeing this kind of erratic freezes on another box:

  Debian wheezy
  3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u4~bpo70+1

So I'll try the same workaround there. And will try to report back here.

Also I'll try to change the status of this bug (due to Ubuntu's
automatic bug expiry).

Thanks again to markusj for the workaround. It would be very interesting
though, if this problem has maybe been fixed in newer kernels. Has
anybody experienced the bug going away by just upgrading the kernel (to
which version?).

Thanks,
*t

@ariel: but is the error message you are seeing the same problem?

The error message you are quoting is different then the one in the

Hello Alan,

first, thanks for caring about this bug. Second, I'd be very happy if you
could tell me where this was fixed. Was it fixed upstream in some specific
version/git? In which version or which commit?

I'm asking, because I'm running Debian these days and so if I could
pinpoint the fix to some commit or version then I could also check it as
done for Debian.

Thanks again and best greetings,

What you can do is start upgrading those packages by hand, by using dpkg
and --force-overwrite.

However: once you start installing/upgrading packages manually, you risk
breaking your system even worse. So you absolutely *must* know how to
get out of a situation where the dependency graph is broken.

I would suggest to you to either find some friend of yours that is an
expert user of debian/ubuntu/dpkg based systems and do this together or
to get some professional help if it's worth it to you.

There also might be a linux or ubuntu users group meeting regulary
somewhere near you where you should be able to find someone
knowledgeable.

Or you can try your luck on some #ubuntu IRC channel.

[Bug 1052813] Re: korganizer segfaulting after Precise LTS upgrade 4:4.8.4a-0ubuntu0.3 - 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1

2012-11-28 Thread Tomas Pospisek
This *seems* to have been resolved upstream - see
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=307026.

I have not tested it since I have given up on korganizer/akonadi.

[Bug 877560] Re: Audio codec draining power when not in use

2012-11-14 Thread Tomas Pospisek
I'm having the same issue but with Debian's kernel linux-
image-3.2.0-4-amd64.

None of the tips provided here worked for me except the one by dfsmith:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/powertop/+bug/536631/comments/13

This seems to be an ALSA problem to me. Do the ALSA people and Intel
know about this?

[Bug 1052813] Re: korganizer segfaulting after Precise LTS upgrade 4:4.8.4a-0ubuntu0.3 - 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1

2012-09-19 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Downgrading korganizer from 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 back to the previous
4:4.8.4a-0ubuntu0.3 fixed the segfault.

In order to reach a consistent package dependency state, I also had to
downgrade the following kde libraries (to the same versions as
korganizer):

libcalendarsupport4
libeventviews4
libincidenceeditorsng4
libkdepim4
libkdepimdbusinterfaces4
libkdgantt2

This is after a migration 10.04 - 12.04.1 and I've got something
similar here:

The upgrade process should do better error reporting here. What's 'status 128'?
And who actually gave that exit status?

[Bug 1044128] [NEW] debconf failing for uswsusp

I'm unconfirming this.

The postscript process error reporting is indeed not very useful, but
what I'm seeing is possibly something different. I've reported it in bug

[Bug 576284] Re: kwalletmanager does not start in GNOME

2012-08-26 Thread Tomas Pospisek
The bug is still present in the next LTS 12.04.1

People store their valuable keys in some application.
The application storing their keys stops working.
People loose access to their keys.
No sign to be seen that the makers of the app would care.

[Bug 663735] Re: After upgrade to 12.04 NetworkManager does not start automatically on boot

2012-08-26 Thread Tomas Pospisek
I can confirm that the auto configuration items in
/etc/network/interfaces cause the symptoms described here.

After commenting out all of the auto items in /etc/network/interfaces
except for auto lo, NetworkManager is starting again automatically.

Thanks Daniil for your research!

[Bug 138586] Re: Gnometris controls very unresponsive when keys are held down

2011-11-27 Thread Tomas Pospisek
There was a playable tetris game for the TI calculator like 20 years
ago.

But still someone has managed to have Gnome ship a version of that game
since 2007 that isn't even playable on 2011's supercomputers.

The culmination of social hacking!

Even Excel Tetris on an Arduino beats the crap out of this
implementation performance wise. Hilarious!

[Bug 853057] [NEW] [GM965] reproducible: watching video with DRI will freeze X

2011-09-18 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

* start Firefox from Ubuntu Lynx, with flash installed
* then go to:
http://www.ardmediathek.de/ard/servlet/content/3517136?documentId=8068044
* watch the footage a bit, switch windows or click on tab or click outside of
the browser window

Result:
* nothing will happen
* CTRL-Alt-Del will have no effect
* CTRL-Alt-Backspace will have no effect
* CTRL-Alt-F1 (changing into a tty) will have no effect
* sometimes the footage/film will continue to be shown, sometimes only sound
will continue
* system will be completely unusable

I have not tried to ssh in and kill processes etc.

Important note:
* this will *only* happen, when DRI is enabled. When I put Option 'NoDRI'
into the xorg.conf, then the video will *not* crash X.

chromium-browser is currently forcing its users to manage its

[Bug 589408] Re: mktemp can't create a file with a suffix/file extension

2010-06-05 Thread Tomas Pospisek
On Fri, 4 Jun 2010, C de-Avillez wrote:

Here I go having spelled the problem character by character to make

You might want to consider doing that on your next bugs as well -- both
spelling the problem character by character, and giving the bug a nice
title. We would not have lost that much time if you had done so from the
 beginning.

Thanks, very cool!

So the logical next step would seem to be to flag the real problem as such
 (Wishlist)
in order for it to be fixed. However users can't do that in Ubuntu. Would
 you mind
fixing this problem that exists for real?

Not at all, considering the suffix problem that indeed exists (and not a
prefix problem that did not). Set to triaged/Medium. Frankly, I do not
see it as WishList, if the suffix functionality was available on the
 previous incarnation of 'mktemp'.

Unfortunately I rechecked (I installed the old mktemp tool from Debian)
and it wasn *not* able to create files with suffixes either.

Even worse, it would create the file XX.bla as such without
replacing the 'X'es without complaining.

The fix should be available for Maverick when we sync coreutils from
Debian. If you need it in a previous version, please nominate
accordingly, and *give a strong reason of why it is needed*. This fix
will, then, be considered for a SRU (Stable Release Update).

Considering the above I think releasing Maverick synched to Debian's
coreutils is fine.

Thanks again,
*t

[Bug 589408] Re: mktemp can't create a file with a suffix/file extension

2010-06-04 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Please give a reason for a status change. A question -- what sounds
like one, at least -- is not a reason.

Changed the title accordingly, to express the actual problem.

The point being:

1. one needs to be able to create temporary files that have a filename
extensions/suffixes, since most of todays Gnome/KDE GUI programms expect
files to have filename extensions

2. mktemp can't do filename extensions

3. the error message being displayed, when using tryng to create files
with fileextension is wrong.

4. the manpage doesn't say *anything* about how TEMPLATES should or
should not look like and the info page is missing

5. AFAIK the previous separate mktemp (from OpenBSD I think) worked as
expected, so that would be a regression

6. coreutils 8.5 fixes the problem

Here I go having spelled the problem character by character to make the
real problem clear.

So the logical next step would seem to be to flag the real problem as
such (Wishlist) in order for it to be fixed. However users can't do that
in Ubuntu. Would you mind fixing this problem that exists for real?

[Bug 373680] Re: network-manager fails periodically , on backgound networks scan?

2010-06-03 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Since the 2.6.32 kernel doesn't work on my machine (#584866) I still
need to run the old *.31 kernel and thus Network Manager's behaveour
still breaks VoIP.

It's now been 2 years that Network Manager assumes it's smarter than the
user and refuses to integrate any knobs that would let him tweak its
behaveour to make NM really useable.

Attached is a graph of the ping intervals before and after installation

[Bug 584866] [NEW] lucid regression: suspend to RAM broken on HP Compaq 6710b

2010-05-24 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Public bug reported:

- works with Karmic kernel: 2.6.31-21.59
- does not work with Lucid kernel: 2.6.32-22.33
- Ubuntu's mainline kernel is broken in a different way: 2.6.34-999.201005231006

When using Lucid's Kernel 2.6.32-22.33, then one of the following things
happen when I suspend either through the menu or by closing the lid:

* the laptop starts to suspend, locks the screen, works for a while and nothing
happens and I have to unlock the screen to get back to the desktop

* the laptop will blank the screen but the power leds will stay on, as if the
laptop was on, however the fan is not working, suggesting that the
  laptop is actually off

* the laptop will blank the screen but will stay on. Since I couldn't figure
out how
to make it light on the screen again I had to shut it down.

I checked the dmesg and kern.log logs but couldn't find anything
conclusive in there.

Ubuntu's mainline kernel: 2.6.34-999.201005231006 is even weirder:

When I boot into it, the only thing I shortly see is Starting Up...
and then the screen goes blank and stays that way. The fan goes to max
and the air coming out becomes really hot. Then since apparently the
bootup process is telling me that it can't mount some non-automount
partition i press S and the boot continues. Out of the blue the login
appears. I log in and I see that udevd is turning at 100% CPU.

[Bug 584866] Re: lucid regression: suspend to RAM broken on HP Compaq 6710b

2010-05-24 Thread Tomas Pospisek
** Description changed:

  - works with Karmic kernel: 2.6.31-21.59
  - does not work with Lucid kernel: 2.6.32-22.33
- - Ubuntu's mainline kernel is broken in a different way:
2.6.34-999.201005231006
+ - Ubuntu's mainline kernel works however is broken in a different way:
2.6.34-999.201005231006

When using Lucid's Kernel 2.6.32-22.33, then one of the following things
happen when I suspend either through the menu or by closing the lid:

  * the laptop starts to suspend, locks the screen, works for a while and
nothing
- happens and I have to unlock the screen to get back to the desktop
+   happens and I have to unlock the screen to get back to the desktop

  * the laptop will blank the screen but the power leds will stay on, as if the
- laptop was on, however the fan is not working, suggesting that the
- laptop is actually off
+   laptop was on, however the fan is not working, suggesting that the
+   laptop is actually off

  * the laptop will blank the screen but will stay on. Since I couldn't figure
out how
- to make it light on the screen again I had to shut it down.
+   to make it light on the screen again I had to shut it down.

I checked the dmesg and kern.log logs but couldn't find anything
  conclusive in there.
-

Ubuntu's mainline kernel: 2.6.34-999.201005231006 is even weirder:

When I boot into it, the only thing I shortly see is Starting Up...
and then the screen goes blank and stays that way. The fan goes to max
and the air coming out becomes really hot. Then since apparently the
bootup process is telling me that it can't mount some non-automount
partition i press S and the boot continues. Out of the blue the login
appears. I log in and I see that udevd is turning at 100% CPU.

[Bug 451843] Re: twinkle no sound

2010-05-22 Thread Tomas Pospisek
I see the same thing, but only since upgrading to Lucid.

On Karmic twinkle worked. The only problem was that on hanging up,
twinkle would hang very often.

Now when I call, the other side rings they can hear me, but I can't hear
anything, my side is completely deaf.

However sound on my side works.

Also, when hanging up, now twinkle hangs 100% in some busy loop (100%
CPU).

I haven't changed anything on my laptop since updating to Lucid wrt.

[Bug 451843] Re: twinkle no sound

2010-05-22 Thread Tomas Pospisek
I don't know wheter twinkle not working is related to Ubuntu aparently
removing asound.conf (?) [1][2]. The problem is, that twinkle does not
know about pulse and thus one seems to be forced either to use OSS or
ALSA.

Anyway, changing my audio settings inside twinkle (System Settings- Audio -
Ring Tone and Headphone) from ALSA plughw: ... Intel ... to ALSA: default
... fixed the no sound problem.

[Bug 268474] Re: please switch off space highlighting in changelogs

2010-05-20 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Will Gray wrote:

Exactly what I wrote here two years ago.

Now it is clear, that for me at least, having grey bars all over the
place is extremely annoying and distracting. Is there anybody out there
that actually appreciates them (see also the two links to discussion of
it I sent two years ago)? What's the exact use of highlighting spaces?

Thus if the default is useless and annoying, then why not change it to a
sane default (ie. invert it: default:off, switching on is possible)?

*t

Btw. you set the status to invalid. What's invalid about my wish? Why
not set it to Won't Fix instead?

[Bug 425411] Re: Computer suspends immediately after resuming if power is unplugged while suspended

2010-02-05 Thread Tomas Pospisek
I am confirmin that after reverting the configuration change from

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/devicekit-
power/+bug/425411/comments/47

upgrading to:

linux-image-generic 2.6.31.19.32
devicekit-power 011-1ubuntu2
gnome-power-manager 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.3

and rebooting, suspending and waking up is working as it should. I.e.:

1) I close the lid while AC is plugged in - the laptop suspends correctly
2) while suspended I unplug AC
3) I open the lid - the laptop wakes up
4) and that's it, no more re-suspending, the laptop stays up awake

(HP Compaq 6710b here)

Thanks to Chow Loong Jin and Marin Pitt fixing and trackingall this
stuff! Horray!

[Bug 373680] Re: network-manager fails periodically , on backgound networks scan?

2010-01-22 Thread Tomas Pospisek
This bug means that SIP over wireless is just scantily
useful under Karmic. It means a period of 5 seconds
of stuttering every 2 minutes. Quite embarrassing
when phoning with someone.

The patched NetworkManager from Wagner Volanin [1]
mentioned in comment #6 [2] in this thread works very
well. Thanks!

[Bug 509411] Re: lock doesn't lock

2010-01-19 Thread Tomas Pospisek
You are right, thanks Chris. The screen saver is disabled there.

However, the current architecture/concept is not consistent in itself:

- what for is there an icon, when it doesn't have any effect?

- why doesn't clicking the icon start the required programm
  (gnome-screen-saver) by itself?

- why isn't there any feedback about why nothing happens when I tell the
computer to do some action (lock the screen) and it doesn't do it?

- why is it necessary to occupy virtual memory and CPU cycles with a programm
(gnome-screensaver), when the programm doesn't do anything useful during
its life? Locking the screen is an active action from the user and thus
gnome-screensaver can be startet and stoped when it is not needed?

- why does it have an effect to click on the lock icon but not any effect to
click on the shutdown icon and choose Lock Screen?

[Bug 509411] [NEW] lock doesn't lock

2010-01-18 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

1)
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
2)
gnome-screensaver: 2.28.0-0ubuntu3.3
3)
When I click on the lock icon or
when I right-click on the lock icon and select Lock Screen or
when I click on the shutdown button and select Lock Screen
then I expect the screen to get actually locked or to get an error message or
to get some log somewhere
4)
none of the expected results above, in fact nothing at all happens

FYI:

$ gconftool-2 -R /apps/gnome-screensaver
 lock_enabled = true
 idle_activation_enabled = true
 cycle_delay = 10
 status_message_enabled = true
 mode = blank-only
 theme = screensavers-ubuntu_theme
 user_switch_enabled = true
 idle_delay = 10
 logout_delay = 120
 power_management_delay = 120
 embedded_keyboard_enabled = false
 logout_enabled = false
 embedded_keyboard_command =
 lock_dialog_theme = default
 logout_command =
 themes = []
 lock_delay = 0

All dependencies of gnome-screensaver except for the Suggests
xscreensaver-data-extra and xscreensaver-gl-extra are installed.

Locking the screen actually used to work. Also in Karmic. But it stopped
working some time ago (like months ago?). Maybe a bug in a Karmic update?
