[Bug 1751047] [NEW] apt-dater-host doesn't correctly recognize available kernels -> please update to current upstream apt-dater-host
Public bug reported: $ ssh ubuntu_xenial_machine # dpkg -s apt-dater-host | grep Version Version: 1.0.1-1 # apt-dater-host kernel ADPROTO: 0.7 KERNELINFO: 1 4.13.0-36-generic # zgrep KERNELINFO -m 1 -A 4 -B 2 /usr/share/doc/apt-dater-host/ADP-0.7.gz The result line has the following format: KERNELINFO: ${Code} ${Release} The following codes are supported: 0 - The running kernel is the latest distri kernel. No reboot required. 1 - The running kernel is an distri kernel but it's older then the latest So apt-dater-host is telling us, that a new kernel is available on this machine. Let's see: # uname -r 4.13.0-36-generic # dpkg-query -W -f='\${Package} \${Version} \${Status;20} \${Maintainer} \${Provides}\n' 'linux-image*' $linux-image $ $unknown ok not-insta $ $ $linux-image-4.13.0-31-generic $4.13.0-31.34~16.04.1 $deinstall ok config- $Ubuntu Kernel Team$aufs-dkms, fuse-module, ivtv-modules, kvm-api-4, linux-image, redhat-cluster-modules, spl-dkms, spl-modules, virtualbox-guest-modules, zfs-dkms, zfs-modules $linux-image-4.13.0-32-generic $4.13.0-32.35~16.04.1 $install ok installed $Ubuntu Kernel Team $aufs-dkms, fuse-module, ivtv-modules, kvm-api-4, linux-image, redhat-cluster-modules, spl-dkms, spl-modules, virtualbox-guest-modules, zfs-dkms, zfs-modules $linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic $4.13.0-36.40~16.04.1 $install ok installed $Ubuntu Kernel Team $aufs-dkms, fuse-module, ivtv-modules, kvm-api-4, linux-image, redhat-cluster-modules, spl-dkms, spl-modules, virtualbox-guest-modules, zfs-dkms, zfs-modules $linux-image-extra-4.13.0-31-generic $4.13.0-31.34~16.04.1 $deinstall ok config- $Ubuntu Kernel Team $ $linux-image-extra-4.13.0-32-generic $4.13.0-32.35~16.04.1 $install ok installed $Ubuntu Kernel Team $ $linux-image-extra-4.13.0-36-generic $4.13.0-36.40~16.04.1 $install ok installed $Ubuntu Kernel Team $ $linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 $4.13.0.36.55 $install ok installed $Ubuntu Kernel Team $ So, no, in fact, there is no newer kernel image available. We do have the latest kernel installed. Now if we go and debug apt-dater-host, we find out, that the above command (modulo the '\${Package}' name) is exactly what apt-dater-host is, to retrieve the list of available kernel images. Now why does apt-dater-host go wrong in determining whether there's a new kernel? It is because it iterates over that list [1] and compares the version from `uname -r` with the version from the list. The problem here is, that comparing the current installed kernel version with the version from the the last line, i.e. : # dpkg --compare-versions 4.13.0-36 lt 4.13.0.36.55 will yield # echo $? 0 meaning, yes there indeed *is* a newer kernel available. The problem is only, that linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 is *not* a kernel package, but instead is a kernel *meta* package, that depends on the latest kernel... Current apt-dater-host versions from upsteam improve the query [2] with a: | grep linux-image Remember, the upstream query does not include the '\${Package}' field, so what the grep does is to effectively filter out by the '\${Provides}' field, which in the case of the meta package is empty. Only the "real" kernel packages do provide a 'linux-image'. Thus upstream's apt-dater-host works on Ubuntu, while Debian's apt-dater-host doesn't. If you update Debian's apt-dater-host then I think it will be pulled into Ubuntu, and things should be fixed there. So I ask you to please update the Debian apt-dater-host from upstream. This is the same bug as https://bugs.debian.org/891092 which was closed there because among other reasons "this is the wrong platform for Ubuntu bugs I am closing it here." [Bug 1115753] Re: Umount of Multiple LVM Snapshots Causes 'soft lockup CPU#0 stuck for'
So I'm reporting my current further findings here in case somebody else than me stumbles upon this bug report in search of help. I'll not create a new bug report as of now, since I'm still researching the problem and I think there's no point in opening a new bug report if it'll turn out to be invalid anyway. So to the point: in my case the problem has been: 8 05:02:51 foo kernel: [987432.148305] device-mapper: snapshots: Invalidating snapshot: Unable to allocate exception. after that umount goes berzerk: Nov 8 05:02:51 foo kernel: [987432.163602] Buffer I/O error on device dm-11, logical block 11985789 Nov 8 05:02:51 foo kernel: [987432.163638] Buffer I/O error on device dm-11, logical block 11985790 ... Nov 8 05:02:51 foo kernel: [987432.299393] EXT4-fs warning (device loop0): __ext4_read_dirblock:901: error reading directory block (ino 3539872, block 0) Nov 8 05:02:57 foo kernel: [987437.577541] quiet_error: 4396 callbacks suppressed Nov 8 05:02:57 foo kernel: [987437.577547] Buffer I/O error on device dm-11, logical block 12622895 Nov 8 05:02:57 foo kernel: [987437.577609] lost page write due to I/O error on dm-11 and now umount is hanging there with 100% CPU usage with no possibility to `kill` it. So one problem here is that the `lvsnapshot` is running out of `exception` space. Thus I should either allow the snapshot to be autoextended or to increase the `-L`size I have given it. But even so, umount shouldn't get stuck on the ext4 FS. Since I was `umount`ing without `-f` I will try that today and see what happens and report back here hopefully. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1115753 Title: Umount of Multiple LVM Snapshots Causes 'soft lockup CPU#0 stuck for' To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1115753/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1115753] Re: Umount of Multiple LVM Snapshots Causes 'soft lockup CPU#0 stuck for'
I am seeing the same problem as reported here. My system and kernel are: Ubuntu Trusty 14.04 linux 3.13.0-66-generic Also, since implementing the "sleep 120" workaround mentioned in [1] (thanks a lot for that markusj!), my box is able to do backups cleanly. I'm also seeing this kind of erratic freezes on another box: Debian wheezy 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u4~bpo70+1 So I'll try the same workaround there. And will try to report back here. Also I'll try to change the status of this bug (due to Ubuntu's automatic bug expiry). Thanks again to markusj for the workaround. It would be very interesting though, if this problem has maybe been fixed in newer kernels. Has anybody experienced the bug going away by just upgrading the kernel (to which version?). [Bug 589408] Re: mktemp can't create a file with a suffix/file extension
On Fri, 4 Jun 2010, C de-Avillez wrote: Here I go having spelled the problem character by character to make the real problem clear. You might want to consider doing that on your next bugs as well -- both spelling the problem character by character, and giving the bug a nice title. We would not have lost that much time if you had done so from the beginning. Thanks, very cool! So the logical next step would seem to be to flag the real problem as such (Wishlist) in order for it to be fixed. However users can't do that in Ubuntu. Would you mind fixing this problem that exists for real? Not at all, considering the suffix problem that indeed exists (and not a prefix problem that did not). Set to triaged/Medium. Frankly, I do not see it as WishList, if the suffix functionality was available on the previous incarnation of 'mktemp'. Unfortunately I rechecked (I installed the old mktemp tool from Debian) and it wasn *not* able to create files with suffixes either. Even worse, it would create the file XX.bla as such without replacing the 'X'es without complaining. The fix should be available for Maverick when we sync coreutils from Debian. If you need it in a previous version, please nominate accordingly, and *give a strong reason of why it is needed*. This fix will, then, be considered for a SRU (Stable Release Update). Considering the above I think releasing Maverick synched to Debian's coreutils is fine. [Bug 589408] Re: mktemp can't create a file with a suffix/file extension
Please give a reason for a status change. A question -- what sounds like one, at least -- is not a reason. Changed the title accordingly, to express the actual problem. The point being: 1. one needs to be able to create temporary files that have a filename extensions/suffixes, since most of todays Gnome/KDE GUI programms expect files to have filename extensions 2. mktemp can't do filename extensions 3. the error message being displayed, when using tryng to create files with fileextension is wrong. 4. the manpage doesn't say *anything* about how TEMPLATES should or should not look like and the info page is missing 5. AFAIK the previous separate mktemp (from OpenBSD I think) worked as expected, so that would be a regression 6. coreutils 8.5 fixes the problem Here I go having spelled the problem character by character to make the real problem clear. So the logical next step would seem to be to flag the real problem as such (Wishlist) in order for it to be fixed. However users can't do that in Ubuntu. Would you mind fixing this problem that exists for real? -- mktemp can't create a file with a suffix/file extension https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/589408 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Since the 2.6.32 kernel doesn't work on my machine (#584866) I still need to run the old *.31 kernel and thus Network Manager's behaveour still breaks VoIP. It's now been 2 years that Network Manager assumes it's smarter than the user and refuses to integrate any knobs that would let him tweak its behaveour to make NM really useable. [Bug 584866] [NEW] lucid regression: suspend to RAM broken on HP Compaq 6710b
Public bug reported: - works with Karmic kernel: 2.6.31-21.59 - does not work with Lucid kernel: 2.6.32-22.33 - Ubuntu's mainline kernel is broken in a different way: 2.6.34-999.201005231006 When using Lucid's Kernel 2.6.32-22.33, then one of the following things happen when I suspend either through the menu or by closing the lid: * the laptop starts to suspend, locks the screen, works for a while and nothing happens and I have to unlock the screen to get back to the desktop * the laptop will blank the screen but the power leds will stay on, as if the laptop was on, however the fan is not working, suggesting that the laptop is actually off * the laptop will blank the screen but will stay on. Since I couldn't figure out how to make it light on the screen again I had to shut it down. I checked the dmesg and kern.log logs but couldn't find anything conclusive in there. Ubuntu's mainline kernel: 2.6.34-999.201005231006 is even weirder: When I boot into it, the only thing I shortly see is Starting Up... and then the screen goes blank and stays that way. The fan goes to max and the air coming out becomes really hot.Then since apparently the bootup process is telling me that it can't mount some non-automount partition i press S and the boot continues. I.e.: 1) I close the lid while AC is plugged in - the laptop suspends correctly 2) while suspended I unplug AC 3) I open the lid - the laptop wakes up 4) and that's it, no more re-suspending, the laptop stays up awake (HP Compaq 6710b here) Thanks to Chow Loong Jin and Marin Pitt fixing and trackingall this stuff! [Bug 373680] Re: network-manager fails periodically , on backgound networks scan?
This bug means that SIP over wireless is just scantily useful under Karmic. It means a period of 5 seconds of stuttering every 2 minutes. Quite embarrassing when phoning with someone. The patched NetworkManager from Wagner Volanin [1] mentioned in comment #6 [2] in this thread works very well. Thanks! *t [1] https://launchpad.net/~volanin/+archive/ppa/+packages [2] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/373680/comments/6 -- network-manager fails periodically , on backgound networks scan? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373680 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 425411] Re: Computer suspends immediately after resuming if power is unplugged while suspended
Upgraded to gnome-power-manager 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.1 on HP 6710b. [Bug 509411] Re: lock doesn't lock
$ ps auxw|grep gnome-screensaver me 22527 0.0 0.0 8404 896 pts/3R+ 09:07 0:00 grep gnome-screensaver $ no, it's not. [Bug 509411] Re: lock doesn't lock
You are right, thanks Chris. The screen saver is disabled there. However, the current architecture/concept is not consistent in itself: - what for is there an icon, when it doesn't have any effect? - why doesn't clicking the icon start the required programm (gnome-screen-saver) by itself? - why isn't there any feedback about why nothing happens when I tell the computer to do some action (lock the screen) and it doesn't do it? - why is it necessary to occupy virtual memory and CPU cycles with a programm (gnome-screensaver), when the programm doesn't do anything useful during its life? Locking the screen is an active action from the user and thus gnome-screensaver can be startet and stoped when it is not needed? - why does it have an effect to click on the lock icon but not any effect to click on the shutdown icon and choose Lock Screen? ** Changed in: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New ** Summary changed: - lock doesn't lock + lock doesn't lock when gnome-screensaver not running in the background -- lock doesn't lock when gnome-screensaver not running in the background https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/509411 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 509411] Re: lock doesn't lock when gnome-screensaver not running in the background
See Chris' comment #6 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/509411/comments/6). The stated problems seem to be mainly a problem of indicator-session. Could this bug be transformed into a Wishlist/Feature Request? ** Package changed: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) = indicator-session (Ubuntu) -- lock doesn't lock when gnome-screensaver not running in the background https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/509411 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
