As Roger pointed out to me in a private email, the crash in the code I
posted above is actually for a different problem. Verified via
stacktrace.

before sudo dpkg --configure -a this command was working in terminal,
but now this is also not doing processes as it did before.
Now it gives error message and stops.
Error message:

I think this error message it not new, terminal also showed this error
message last time when sudo dpkg --configure -a ran and did some
process, after the processes at end the error message came every time.

I have electricity load shedding problem, so often electricity goes off

Just tested with Alternate Alpha 4 iso (I stopped burning CDs). Turned
off all Extended features and it booted without the kernel panic ...
once. It's very strange. It would work at other times if I made what
seemed like large config changes in vbox, like SATA to IDE drive type.

Hi, I just tested this using Ubuntu 8.10 (Alpha 3 - Released July 24th,
2008). The image still gets cropped. However, that was a LIVE session
of the CD. So before I set this New, I'll install it, get all the
updates, and try again.

I've just entered: lls -tlr instead of ls -ltr and at once hit
CTRL+C
The result was similar like described in the thread begin:
$ lls -tlr
'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
