[Bug 1975884] Re: Temporary screen freeze on gnome screen lock (wayland, ubuntu 22.04 jammy)

2022-05-28 Thread Vivek Gani
Just noticed the screenlock freeze again, worked fine most of yesterday
(mostly only had firefox open), then later installed GSConnect extension
(was essential for getting an errand done) and had sublimetext open
(around 15 workspaces open). See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1976163 for
associated info.

[Bug 1975884] Re: Temporary screen freeze on gnome screen lock (wayland, ubuntu 22.04 jammy)

2022-05-27 Thread Vivek Gani
Got it, thanks. I haven't tried to 'remove all' unsupported extensions
per your instructions yet, but did disable all non-system extensions via
the 'Extensions Manager' app and still noticed the issue (without
logging in again). Will now try removing all per your instructions,
logging in again/rebooting and see.

EDIT: haven't logged out or rebooted yet, but noticing a slight (not as
much) delay still. Could be associated with having a large number of
apps/browser tabs open.

[Bug 1975884] Re: Temporary screen freeze on gnome screen lock (wayland, ubuntu 22.04 jammy)

2022-05-26 Thread Vivek Gani
** Description changed:

  As first mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/+bug/1769981/comments/25 , I've been observing an issue when
unlocking my computer (usually from a screen lock state, not
hibernation/sleep) where after entering the first few characters of my
password the screen freezes for 10-20 seconds before I can do any type
  of input (mouse, touch, keyboard).

I've largely been noticing this since upgrading from Ubuntu 21.10 to
22.04. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to file an issue
  for.

  So far I've tried:
  - Disabling the 'blur my shell' extension - still encountered the issue again
eventually.
  - Looking for anything associated with this in /var/crash - couldn't find
anything.
  - Looking for anything associated at errors.ubuntu.com for my id.
+
+ What I may eventually try:
+ - Seeing if this may depend on having too many browser tabs / apps open.
Currently not in a position to do this.

[Bug 1769981] Re: Temporary screen freeze when coming back from screen standby

2022-05-25 Thread Vivek Gani
I've been having an issue similar to this on 22.04 (jammy) and don't
recall experiencing it on 21.10. It's actually happened not just from
standby but from just being on (with display off) as well. I'm still
testing, but it could be extensions like 'blur my shell' causing an
issue. Couldn't find anything associated with this in /var/crash or in
errors.ubuntu.com for my id.

[Bug 1973386] Re: 22.04 Jammy: Lockscreen (but not login) on-screen keyboard touch keys do not work

2022-05-13 Thread Vivek Gani
** Description changed:

Several people on reddit (many surface pro / go users, and myself as an
HP tablet pc user) have been experiencing an issue on Ubuntu 22.04
(jammy jellyfish) where the gnome lockscreen on-screen keyboard is not
functional, but the main ubuntu loginscreen on-screen keyboard is
  functional.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SurfaceLinux/comments/umeiqx/onscreen_keyboard_doesnt_register_key_presses_in/

  Steps to reproduce:

  0) Ensure you have Screen Keyboard enabled in the accessibility menu.
  1) From a logged-in state, Go to upper right corner and click Lock
  2) Turn device back on so 'user lockscreen' comes back on, try to log in
using touchscreen on-screen keyboard.
  3) Observe key presses don't work.
  4) Try to close login password prompt such that switch user login button
appears.
- 5) Touch switch user login button, leading to 'login screen' (black with
ubuntu logo)
+ 5) Touch switch user login button, leading to 'login screen' (black with
ubuntu logo)
  6) Select user, try to log in using touchscreen on-screen keyboard and
observe it works.

  See demo video: https://youtu.be/RjfRZOmwsgs

(NOTE: In the video there's another separate issue here in regards to
the 'login screen' not having awareness of tablet screen orientation)
+
+ This was observed on 22.04, I didn't experience this issue on 21.10

[Bug 1962225] Re: preinst check that kernel revision < 255 now does more harm than good

2022-03-02 Thread Vivek Mehra
For people working with Docker build
@Itay Elgazar (elgazaritay)

Copy the script above into a file(like ubuntuFix.sh)
Use it in your Dockerfile like below:-

FROM ubuntu:latest
USER root
WORKDIR /home/app
COPY . /home/app
#Workaround for ubuntu fix start
RUN mv /bin/uname /bin/uname.orig
RUN cp ./ubuntuFix.sh /bin/uname
RUN chmod 755 /bin/uname;
RUN cat /bin/uname
#Workaround for ubuntu fix end
RUN apt clean
RUN apt-get update
RUN apt -y install gnupg2

.
.
//Rest of the Dockerfile code
.
.

@Nic thanks for the solution..
Hope this works for others using Docker image

[Bug 1946444] [NEW] ath11k_pci firmware crashes under regular usage on Dell XPS 13 9310 (no suspend and resume)

2021-10-08 Thread Vivek
Public bug reported:

While I was normally working on my Dell XPS 13 9310 Laptop, noticed that
WiFi suddenly got disconnected. Looking at dmesg, noticed that the
firmware crashed.

(I am also attaching the entire dmesg output as a file to this bug. )

$ dmesg | grep ath11_k

[ 13.826871] ath11k_pci :72:00.0 wlp114s0: renamed from wlan0
[35908.890709] ath11k_pci :72:00.0: firmware crashed: MHI_CB_SYS_ERROR

[36305.230445] ath11k_pci :72:00.0: failed to enable PMF QOS: (-11

I had to reboot the machine at least 2 times before WiFi started
working. In the past, I had noticed WiFi would not work after boot a
couple of times, but this is the first time I am seeing it breaking
under normal, continuous usage. This is a major reliability issue if
WiFi connection keeps breaking in the middle of work like this.

Also, this is somewhat similar to the following bugs, but not exactly
the same:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-oem-5.10/+bug/1944018
(here there is no message 'firmware crashed' but rather some failures
from ath11k_pci. Moreover it occurred during suspend and resume. Whereas
in my case, the last suspend + resume was at least 3 and half hours
before the firmware crash)

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-
oem-5.10/+bug/1942060 (here there is 'firmware crashed' message, but all
the error messages after that seem to be different. Moreover it seems to
have occurred 56 seconds after system booted, when WiFi network was
connected. Whereas I had a uptime of 9 hours and about 6 hours after the
last WiFi connection).

[Bug 1946343] Re: Stale os-release file after possible upgrade from 20.04.2 to 20.04.3

2021-10-07 Thread Vivek
@Steve, thank you for looking into this. If this is not a base-files
issue, where could the problem be? I have not installed any other
package myself. This is just the Ubuntu installation that the laptop
came with.

As an end user I am unable to see whether upgrade to 20.04.3 is
successful or not. Clearly lsb_release is not saying so.

[Bug 1946343] [NEW] Stale os-release file after possible upgrade from 20.04.2 to 20.04.3

2021-10-07 Thread Vivek
Public bug reported:

Refer: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/698949

I recently bought a Dell laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed in it. Looks
like it came with Ubuntu 20.04.2 and OEM Linux Kernel in it. After my
initial login (on October 1, 2021), the 'Software Updater' GUI prompted
me for updates, which I went ahead with.

However at the end of it, I noticed that I was still at 20.04.2 with
Linux Kernel at 5.10.0-1045-oem.

lsb_release -a
---

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (fossa-bulbasaur X55.1)
Release:20.04
Codename: focal

uname -a
-
Linux dev-linux 5.10.0-1045-oem #47-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 18 10:41:03 UTC 2021
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Then I manually tried sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade / dist-
upgrade from the terminal, but nothing got upgraded. When I invoked the
GUI 'Software Updater' again, it showed me that my system was already
up-to-date. However, as 20.04.3 was released end of Aug 2021, I was
expecting that I should be at that release after my initial updates.

Since that didn't happen, I asked a question regarding this in askubuntu
followed by launchpad
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/698949, thinking my
update had failed for some unknown reason.

However, based on some inputs from other users, we were able to narrow
down the problem to /usr/lib/os-release file not having the right
contents in it. Every other file including /usr/lib/os-release.oem-
release, /etc/issue, /etc/issue.net specifies that I am on 20.04.3.
Whereas only /usr/lib/os-release (and its symlink /etc/release)
specifies my current release as 20.04.2.

Even the lsb_release -a command always displays the output of
/usr/lib/os-release file only.

newer timestamp of Oct 1 compared to other files.

Please note that, other software package updates, and linux kernel
updates are happening automatically without any issues so far for me.
Few days back even got a new kernel update.

Workarounds Attempted
-
1. Commented out all non-ubuntu external sources from /etc/apt/*.list. Then
performed an apt clean + update + upgrade. But still nothing happened and the
same issue remained.

2. Tried performing apt-install --reinstall base-files. But still
nothing changed:

Just to summarize above, I suspect this is related to touch input event
handling rather than earlier thoughts around bluetooth or screen
orientation.

[Bug 1938352] Re: [wayland] gnome-shell elements (dock, top bar, on-screen keyboard) becomes unresponsive to touch / mouse while windows & desktop are still responsive to touch input

2021-08-02 Thread Vivek Gani
Thanks. After experiencing this issue 2-3 times last night, I realized
this may possibly be related to tablet screen rotation (not sure if the
gnome-shell logs delve into this, tried looking and didn't see anything
that seemed relevant) - Generally when I've noticed this bug I was using
the device in portrait mode. Screen orientation done via physically
rotating device + using internal sensor.

My setup/experience in this last encounter was:
 - Had 3rd party gnome shell extensions (including wandering pixel) disabled
beforehand - only "Desktop Icons NG" enabled.
 - Turned off bluetooth as well, to try and dispell earlier ideas of it being
related to the bluetooth keyboard connection.

Steps:
 - Rotated screen to portrait, had firefox and a gnome files window open.
 - Started using the device, might've rotated back to landscape once or twice
quickly to see what happens.
 - Observed when issue happens (while in portrait mode), just beforehand active
window I had open (gnome files) suddenly moved maybe 50-100px up, like it was
correcting for a orientation change even though I was felt like I was just
using device normally laid down in portrait mode.

[Bug 1938623] Re: Audio output & input routes to usb-c hub (where audio jack is disconnected) instead of laptop speakers

2021-07-31 Thread Vivek Gani
Realizing this likely has more to do with the lack of driver support for
usb-c hubs on linux - per pulseaudio's documentation (
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/Modules/#module-
switch-on-port-available ) :

"# module-switch-on-connect

Earlier this module was required to automatically switch to a newly
plugged in USB sound card, but nowadays USB sound cards have higher
priority than internal sound cards, so they automatically become the
default sink (unless you have manually configured the default sink to be
something else) and the need for this module is greatly reduced."

"#module-switch-on-port-available

(not on USB sound cards, though, since they don't support jack
detection)"

[Bug 1938623] [NEW] Audio output & input routes to usb-c hub (where audio jack is disconnected) instead of laptop speakers

2021-07-31 Thread Vivek Gani
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 21.04 with an intel tablet and a lenovo usb-c hub that
has an audio adapter: See https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=09f8c72d80/

I never have anything hooked into the audio jack on usb-c hub, yet every
time I plug my tablet into the usb-c hub the sound output switches to
the usb-c hub instead of staying routed to the tablet speakers. I then
have to go either into settings or use a sound output extension to
switch it back to the speakers.

This issue does not happen when using Windows 10 - audio stays routed
through the tablet speakers - my guess is that it goes a step further
and detects whether an audio jack actually has a cable plugged in or
not.

What package handles determining default audio routing for Ubuntu 21.04
/ Gnome 3.38.5? I'd like to file a bug about this / possibly see if I
can help make the defaults work better.

fwiw in addition to earlier experiencing this with no extensions, I've

@vanvugt the issue goes away when I log out. To clarify, do you want me
to try:

A: Leaving the above extensions enabled, try to disable them when the
issue occurs, then see if the problem stops occurring?

B: Turn off those extensions now, then see if I observe the issue happen
again?

Thanks, it solved my problem.

I installed this package by,

sudo apt-get install rtbth-dkms

And then,

sudo modprobe rtbth

It worked.

[Bug 1878392] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa desktop launchers not working

2020-08-15 Thread vivek gangwar
I think issue is with dash to panel, I checked with dash to dock and it
didnt happen: When we click the launcher icon the menu background that
displays the apps dont vanish when you reclick the launcher button to
hide it. Maybe due to that the things become unresponsive. It just shows
a 'X' mark on top left in my case.

Re: [Bug 1872287] Re: I'm getting CPU freezing issues.

2020-04-14 Thread vivek gangwar
Already mentioned "freezes" while playing CSGO, while making disk
operations, while opening programs etc etc.
Tried using kernel versions higher than 5.4.x on ubuntu 18.04 but then
nvidia xserver settings broke down, couldn't fix it without reinstallation.

Re: [Bug 1872287] Re: I'm getting CPU freezing issues.

2020-04-14 Thread vivek gangwar
acc. to me this happens when I make use of my storage(ssd), I tried
switching to different ubuntu versions and kernels, I was not having this
problem on 20.04 but I was having other problems related to package
installations, thats why Iswitched back to 19.10 and then to 18.04. Nothing
worked.

[Bug 1559639] [NEW] Similar to Bug #1234453. Clicking on an icon with 2 or more open windows reloads UI

2016-03-20 Thread Vivek
Public bug reported:

This happens specially on File Manager.
Ubuntu version 15.10 (manually installed from USB live boot).
Last updated : Mar 19th.
RAM usage : 800 MB/ 4GB
Machine : Compaq Laptop.

Steps to reproduce the bug:

Click on file icon : Opens a new window of your home folder.
type +n to open a new window
now try single/double click on the file manager icon on the dock.

you see the desktop wallpaper, screen refreshes including the dock

No loss of information. However very irritating.

Addendum:

1. tested it on terminal window, by opening multiple windows and
clicking on the terminal window icon, the UI still crashes.

2. Clicking multiple times (4-5 times) on the icon with multiple
windows, renders the screen unresponsive for 4-5 seconds.

Vivekanand Kini

[Bug 879218] Re: some users prefer the old grid behaviour (dividing each time the keybinding are used)

So is there a fix for making ctrl + alt + numpad 4 and numpad 6 cycle
between the various widths for multiple keypresses instead of just being
half? Because my compiz grid still does not work. I am on Ubuntu 12.04

[Bug 1347169] [NEW] Various storvsc bug fixes.

2014-07-22 Thread vivek yadav
Public bug reported:

Over last week we have made changes and fix bugs in storvsc , please include
these patch set .

[PATCH V3 1/7] Drivers: scsi: storvsc: Change the limits to reflect the values
on the hostIn Hyper-V, each port/path/target maps to 1 scsi host adapter.
In reality, the path/target is not used (ie always set to 0) so our scsi host
adapter essentially has 1 bus with 1 target that contains up to 256 luns.

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-
next.git/commit/?id=01a1fc6a17a33edc6b43aca255b31f51497e2414

[PATCH V3 2/7] Drivers: scsi: storvsc: Set cmd_per_lun to reflect value
supported by the HostSet cmd_per_lun to reflect value supported by the
Host.

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-
next.git/commit/?id=4a1e22529bda70eacde631bf4611b61b7aac9ae6

[PATCH V3 3/7] Drivers: scsi: storvsc: Filter commands based on the storage
protocol version
Going forward it is possible that some of the commands that are not currently
implemented will be implemented on future Windows hosts. Even if they are not
implemented, we are told the host will corrrectly handle unsupported
commands (by returning appropriate return code and sense information).
Make command filtering depend on the host version.

next.git/commit/?id=5aacedc1953dcaa1434a179147861319c919503e

[PATCH V3 4/7] Drivers: scsi: storvsc: Fix a bug in handling VMBUS protocol
version
Based on the negotiated VMBUS protocol version, we adjust the size of the
storage protocol messages. The two sizes we currently handle are pre-win8 and
post-win8. In WS2012 R2, we are negotiating higher VMBUS protocol version than
the win8 version. Make adjustments to correctly handle this.

next.git/commit/?id=0d0da066835a1194f3a6c425054db90b089e74ea

[PATCH 5/7] Drivers: scsi: storvsc: Implement a timedout handler
On Azure, we have seen instances of unbounded I/O latencies. To deal with
this issue, implement handler that can reset the timeout. Note that the
host gaurantees that it will respond to each command that has been issued.

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-
next.git/commit/?id=ec5dafb2361fb393e12745bda837707be2041436

[PATCH 6/7] drivers: scsi: storvsc: Set srb_flags in all cases
Correctly set SRB flags for all valid I/O directions. Some IHV drivers on the
Windows host require this. The host validates the command and SRB flags
prior to passing the command down to native driver stack.

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-
next.git/commit/?id=20e9f28dd87e62d10f2c434396c734da43329c57

[PATCH 7/7] drivers: scsi: storvsc: Correctly handle TEST_UNIT_READY failure
On some Windows hosts on FC SANs, TEST_UNIT_READY can return SRB_STATUS_ERROR.
Correctly handle this. Note that there is sufficient sense information to
support scsi error handling even in this case.

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-
next.git/commit/?id=27ac92916691eab6c9ca74db19a4b13084d5c78d

Abhishek

2014-03-20 Thread vivek
Even I have the same problem where I have entered the user name of my

I am using Banshee 2.6.1 on Ubuntu 13.04.

The ~/.config/banshee-1/log file had the following messages which might
come in handy:

crashed. But both the players started working fine after the reboot.

or over the network (e.g. cloud, nfs, etc.) I ask because there is also
an error from your Atheros ethernet driver coincident to the gpu lockup.
Iff those files were being loaded across the network, it's *possible*
you have two different bugs (in which case the question becomes why did
they occur simultaneously). Did the movie player crash, exit with an
error, show a blank screen, ...?

Also, can you confirm your system did *not* lock up in conjunction with
the bug? Did it eventually recover and allow you to play movies
normally, or did the issue persist until you rebooted? I assume after
reboot everything got back to normal?
