2021-07-16 Thread Volker
I do agree - /boot/efi does not exist. BUT: I did for sure nothing that
made it get lost. This has been done by a bunch of regular system
updates (apt update/upgrade) w/o any interaction with me.

[Bug 1934462] Re: Ability to hibernate lost after update of kernel version

2021-07-08 Thread Volker Nicolai
cat /sys/power/disk
yields
[disabled]

cat /sys/power/state
yields
freeze mem

Trying to change any of them (e.g. the "state" file to "mem freeze disk
standby") with
  sudo vi /sys/power/state
results in vi in the notice:

'"/sys/power/state" E514: write error (file system full)
WARNING: Original file may be lost or damaged
don't quit the editor until the file is successfully written! '

Trying to change and save the file with
  sudo nano /sys/power/state
yields the message:
'[ Error writing /sys/power/state: Invalid argument ]'

Any other operation on these files like mv, cp, chmod result in a:
"Operation not permitted" error.

So why can I not change/write any of these files though the permissions
on them suggest it??

At least I alreay solved my problem with "sudo hibernate":
The root cause that this did not work is that "Secure Boot" was enabled (again
- for whatever reason) in my UEFI/BIOS.
After having switched it off (again) hibernation works again.
BUT:
Even after having switches off "Secure Boot" I still can not write any of the
files in /sys/power. No matter what I do or how I try!
This remains and seems independant of the kernel version.

[Bug 1934462] Re: Ability to hibernate lost after update of kernel version

2021-07-07 Thread Volker Nicolai
** Description changed:

  Hi!

I have Ubuntu 18.04 installed (due to Petalinux requirement) where
Hibernation so far at least worked. Recently I got an update
notification, confirmed it and am now running on this version:

  $ uname -a
  Linux datatel-XMG-CORE-M19-GTX-1650 5.4.0-77-generic #86~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP
Fri Jun 18 01:23:22 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Before the update, using kernel 5.4.0.74 a "sudo hibernate" worked fine. Now
it does not, instead returns a black screen for a sec and then this notice:
hibernate:Warning: Tuxonice binary signature file not found.

In addition the system hangs for a couple of seconds.

Looking for help on that I saw several posts proposing to adapt
/sys/power/state, adding "disk" and "standby" to it. I have tried that
in any possible way I could think of, using vi directly on the file (as
su), writing it with an "echo... > /sys/power/state" command, making up
a file in my home and then copying to that location using "sudo cp
~/ /sys/power/state". Neither of this works. I always get a
permission error. I have even tried to "chmod" all the directories to
"777" and that was successful looking at "ls -la" but won't help either.

Maybe I should mention that my Ubuntu installation resides on a USB-
  Stick.

I posted this on Ask Ubuntu and was asked to file a bug report. So here
  you are.

  Thanks.

+ Sorry to say that I have meanwhile (after a restoration of my root partition
to kernel version 5.4.0-74) figured out that the above error
+ "hibernate:Warning: Tuxonice binary signature file not found."
+ does not come from the kernel update (to -77) but seemingly from my
repartioning.
+ What I did:
+ I have a 256GB SanDisk USB stick where I installed Ubuntu 18.04.04 .
+ Partitioning was:
+ /dev/sda1 fat32 /efi1,4G
+ /dev/sda2 fat32 /mnt/UDISK 55,6G
+ /dev/sda3 ext4/ 140G
+ /dev/sda4 swap35,9G
+ I made a backup of sda3 with dd deleted sda2 und sda3 with gparted and
increased the size of sda2 to the max then, partitioning:
+ /dev/sda1 fat32 /efi1,4G
+ /dev/sda2 ext4/ 195,6G
+ /dev/sda4 swap35,9G
+ I restored (former) sda3 to now sda2 tried to reboot, got a boot problem
because /etc/fstab still contained the old sda2 entry, removed that and the
system booted apparently normal.
+ Then I made a "sudo resize2fs /dev/sda2" to get the full size of the
partition for the file system and it seemed to work fine.
+ BUT: Now hibernation does not work any more and produces the above error -
before the Software Updater came forward.

[Bug 1893513] Re: man page of lsof command broken

2021-01-06 Thread Volker Wysk
Hi

How do I get back from the new version in focal-proposed to the old one
in focal? Or: Will everything be okay when it goes to from focal-
proposed to focal-updates in a week?

Bye
Volker

[Bug 1893513] Re: man page of lsof command broken

2021-01-06 Thread Volker Wysk
Hi

I've tested the version of the lsof package in focal-proposed. The
version is 4.93.2+dfsg-1ubuntu0.20.04.1. The "man lsof" command now
works.

I'd like to "change the tag from verification-needed-focal to
verification-done-focal", but I'm too lazy to figure out how to do it.
:)

You could write how to do this in the "Please test proposed package"
mail/post. You should also advise to do a "apt update; apt full-upgrade"
before activating the -proposed respository by checking "Pre-released
updates" in the developer options in the Software & Updates program on
the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed wiki page. This would
avoid confusion later.

Cheers,
Volker

[Bug 1896389] [NEW] Problem with Nautilus and Port 22 when a different port is configured

2020-09-20 Thread Volker Wysk
Public bug reported:

I've configured my ssh client(s) to use a port different from 22, in
order to avoid the large number of break-in attempts on the standard
port 22. That's the "Port" setting in /etc/ssh/ssh_config. I've also
configured my ssh servers (different machines) to use that port. That's
also "Port", in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. This works fine.

But now I'm trying to use nautilus to connect via sftp to my website,
using the address:

sftp://username@provider:22/path/to/www/data

The port 22, which is to be used, is provided. The configured new
default port is overridden by it. This works for the sftp command:

sftp sftp://username@provider:22/path/to/www/data

But it doesn't work with nautilus. I get this message (translated back
from German to English):

"The server has refused the connection. This usually is because of a
firewall denies access or the remote service isn't running."

But when I change the default port in /etc/ssh/ssh_config back to 22, it
works!

It looks like nautilus fails to regard the port, which is provided in
the URL (see above).

[Bug 1893954] [NEW] grub-pc installed, rather than grub-efi-amd64, in UEFI computer

2020-09-02 Thread Volker Wysk
Public bug reported:

I've made a fresh new install of Ubuntu 20.04 on my UEFI desktop
computer. Which works, but some wrong packages seem to be installed: The
grub-pc package, which is meant for older, BIOS-based computers, is

[Bug 1893513] [NEW] man page of lsof command broken

2020-08-29 Thread Volker Wysk
Public bug reported:

When trying to view the manpage of lsof, this happens:

desktop ~ $ LANG=C man lsof
man: can't open /usr/share/man/./version: No such file or directory
No manual entry for lsof

The man page is present at /usr/share/man/man8/lsof.8.gz.

This: zless /usr/share/man/man8/lsof.8.gz
reveals that there is the line ".so ./version" at the beginning, with the file
"version" not existing.

Other man pages don't seem to be affected.

Yes, choosing "Details" in the list to the left, causes the crash. No
"-> About" needed. When doing so, "Details" becomes the last choosen
panel ("last-panel='info-overview'"), and is opened automatically when
starting gnome-control-center again. This then causes the crash to
occur again, this time immediately.

DO NOT DO THAT, what I've written in the previous comment (moving away
~/.config/dconf/user). It resets the configuration of many programs. Do
this instead, to reset only the configuration of the Gnome Control

Hi.

When you move away the file ~/.config/dconf/user, then it works again.
That "user" file is automatically regenerated.

[Bug 1831494] [NEW] USB-related kernel problem with scanner

2019-06-03 Thread Volker Wysk
Public bug reported:

My Canon CanoScan LiDE 220 scanner had worked reasonably well, until a
new kernel has been installed. It went into stop-and-go mode, and made
funny noises. This is worse in higher resolutions.

I had a notion that it might be a problem with USB, which in turn resides in the
kernel. I was right. The most current kernel, which has been installed, was
version
4.15.0-50. The previous one (which still is available via GRUB) was version
4.15.0-48.
I tried that version, and the problem went away.

I'm using Kubuntu 18.04.

[Bug 1767133] Re: linux-image-4.15.0-20-generic install after upgrade from xenial breaks

2018-05-03 Thread volker kempter
kernel 4.15.0-21:

hi cascardo,
previously, I attempted to remove the kernel via synaptic. And
linux-image-4.15.0-21 could not be removed.

This time I did
apt-get remove --purge.

I get (translation from german)

rmdir: /lib/modules/4.15.0-21-generic could not be removed: not empty,
and
dpkg: during removal of linux-modules-4.15.0-21-generic, the directory
/lib/modules/4.15.0-21 is not empty. Thus, will not be removed.

However, this time the kernel is indeed removed completely (all 5 .deb
files).

In fact, /lib/modules/4.15.0-21-generic contains stuff related to
virtualbox only, such as vboxdrv.ko (3 more .ko files). Maybe, these are
remnants from the previous incomplete removal of the kernel?

install is okay, BUT no boot (kernel panic); afterwards, the kernel is

The same behaviour is found with kernel 4.19.0-19 for bionic.

Had to remove the .postinit, .postrm, etc. files in /var/lib/dpkg/info/

The same behaviour is found with kernel 4.19.0-19 for bionic.

after modifying /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume as described it is
necessary to do

sudo update-initramfs -u.

After doing this, the boot is normal; in my case the total boot time is

Apparently, there is a problem with the UUID in /resume.

a description of "my bug" can obviously be found in askubuntu.com, question:

Unfortunately, it did NOT resolve "my bug".

[Bug 1763611] Re: Lubuntu bionic boots slower than the other Ubuntu flavours with some SSDs

2018-04-17 Thread volker kempter
I can report the following:

- Export of a lubuntu-18.04 VM running in VB in a 32bit host with HD.
This VM does not show the delay of about 30sec.

- Import of this VM into VB on the 64bit host with SSD; on this host all
64bit lubuntu-18.04 VMs show the 30 sec delay.

- Run the 32bit VM in VB on the 64bit host with SSD -> no delay!

In my opinion, this finding speaks against a problem with the SSD...

[Bug 1763611] Re: Lubuntu bionic boots slower than the other Ubuntu flavours with some SSDs

2018-04-13 Thread volker kempter
exactly same problem for my lubuntu/lxqt bionic 64bit installation in
virtualbox: 33.9 sec from the boot menu to login screen. No problems for
the other flavours as mentioned above.

No such problems for a 32 bit installation without SSD, again as virtual
machine.

[Bug 1751237] Re: fresh install lubuntu failed

2018-02-23 Thread volker kempter
Update of lubuntu-18.04 (and ubuntu-mate-18.04)from kernel 4.13.0-36 to kernel
4.15.0-10:
boot fails:

Boot stops shortly after the boot screen appears, then screen becomes
black. Afterwards, the system tries several times to come up with the
boot screen again, but never succeeds; then stops completely.

No such problems with mainline builds 4.15.4 and 4.15.5.

Probably related to bug #1751139?

2018-02-23 Thread volker kempter
Boot of both ubuntu-mate and lubuntu/lxqt (both 18.04) with kernel
4.15.0-10 in virtualbox:

Boot starts correctly until the boot screen appears; continues to boot
for the fraction of a second. Then screen becomes black. System tries
again to come up to the boot screen several times. Then stops
completely.

No such problems with 4.13.0-36.

No such problems with mainline kernel, version 4.15.4 and/or 4.15.5:
both boot correctly.

I've tried 4.14.14 as well: no boot without additional boot options.

With the above mentioned 5 boot options it fails to boot "sometimes"; one out
of three, may be.
It should mention that I'm using a dell latitude e6500 for these tests; the
discrepancy between our results will probably be due to the hardware

for me,lubuntu,16.04, 32 bit installation, no kernels 4.13 and 4.14
boot, neither without or with acpi=off. Without acpi=off, boot stops
right after leaving the grub menu; with acpi=off after the message
"starting to show plymouth boot screen".

Neither does kernel 4.14.14-041414 boot; it fails also with acpi=off.

Boot, without any additional boot options, is possible for 4.10.0-43 and

Hello, I 've got the same problem with DB2. When I'm leaving the system
as the DB instance owner, all procs are killed. I guess, it depends on
the new systemd in 1604. ( see /var/log/syslog "received SIGRTMIN+24
from PID (kill) " ) maybe some sysctl param like kernel.shmall ..
are involved too. It would be nice if a maintainer finally fixed that
problem.

[Bug 1723484] [NEW] unlocking several crypto volumes with one password during boot

2017-10-13 Thread Volker Wysk
Public bug reported:

This is a feature request.

I have an encrypted SSD which I want to use as a cache (an LVM-Cache)
for my encrypted harddisc.

The cached root filesystem depends on *both* crypto discs. The new
cached root volume is created from the original root volume
("OriginLV"), and two volumes that reside on the encrypted SSD
("CacheMetaDataLV" and "CacheDataLV").

This means that, during boot, we need to set up both crypto volumes,
before we can mount the root filesystem. So we can't use a keyfile.

This is accomplished by querying the user for the password of each
crypto volume, except for the ones which use a key file.

This means that I'll have to enter two passwords every time I boot my
machine.

This could be done better by making the user enter just one password,
and unlocking all matching crypto disks with it. So I would set the same
password for both crypto disks, and would have to enter the password
only once. This is my feature request.

The same problem with the mainline kernel 4.6.11.

Downgrading from 4.11.0-6 to 4.10.0-22 solves the problem.

Find similar lines in the console log, in particular the following which
was mentioned above:

[Bug 1599374] Re: Short form of option "--node" ("-n") is present, but broken and undocumented

2016-07-06 Thread Volker Siegel
** Description changed:

The option "--node" of "pinfo" is used to initially navigate to a section of
the info page (a node),
in the same way it is implemented in "info".
This option is important when accessing long info pages.

It could be expected that the option is compatible with "info",
and therefore has a short form "-n". It seems like this was actually intended
to be the case.

Using the option "-n", as in

- $ pinfo zsh -n Keymaps
+ $ pinfo zsh -n Keymaps

fails with an error message referring to the long option "--node":

- $ pinfo zsh -n Keymaps
- Przemek's Info Viewer v0.6.9
- --node option used without argument
+ $ pinfo zsh -n Keymaps
+ Przemek's Info Viewer v0.6.9
+ --node option used without argument

The long option works fine, in the same way it does in "info":

- $ pinfo zsh --node Keymaps
+ $ pinfo zsh --node Keymaps

opens the info page for "zsh", showing the section "Keymaps".

+ (The option "--n" does work, because it is a prefix form of the long
+ option)
+
+ The option "-n" is not mentioned in the documentation, which is currently
+ correct - but most other options have a short variant.
+
+
Another example of the options relevance:

- $ pinfo coreutils --node 'tsort invocation'
+ $ pinfo coreutils --node 'tsort invocation'

- shows the info page of "tsort" (a node of coreutils, actually),
+ shows the info page of "tsort" (a node of coreutils, actually),
while using "-n" does not. Navigating manually from

- $ pinfo coreutils
+ $ pinfo coreutils

is not a good alternative, because the index is long.

(Note that "pinfo tsort" shows the man page of "tsort", which is very
  short)

[Bug 1599374] [NEW] Short form of option "--node" ("-n") is present, but broken and undocumented

[Bug 1570352] Re: strongswan vpn cannot be established via the network-manager

2016-06-22 Thread volker kempter
ad #12:
Strange, for me, vpn can be established also from the GUI. I checked it with
two machines, both Lubuntu-16.04 under kernels 4.4.0-25 and 4.6.0-7.

Have you checked that you can set - up vpn via the console by using the
"ipsec" commands? (That worked also when I had the problem with
establishing vpn from the GUI!).

strongswan vpn, establishing connection via network manager:

with the most recent version of the network-manager-gnome,
v1.2.0-0ubuntu.16.04.3, vpn can again be established via the network
manager! No complaints anymore from my side.

[Bug 567640] Re: Static Application Switcher needs ability to change thumbnail size

2016-05-24 Thread Volker Siegel
To me the thumbnails are rather too small,
on a 2560x1600, 101 dpi screen (30").

The solution is the same, described in the current title:
"Static Application Switcher needs ability to change thumbnail size"

[Bug 1581440] [NEW] Package description of plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text says its a logo theme

2016-05-13 Thread Volker Siegel
Public bug reported:

The package description of the text theme package,
"plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text"
as shown in aptitude etc,

states it is a logo theme, just like
"plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo" which is confusing
without much context.

The description of "plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text" is:
"graphical boot animation and logger - ubuntu-logo theme"

(could be just a copy and paste error of descriptions)
