[Bug 1785184] [NEW] Screen scintillation with Nvidia GPU and nouveau

2018-08-03 Thread YS1
Public bug reported:

When using my Quadro K620 with the nouveau driver, the screen
scintillates. This is more perceptible on the SDDM login screen and when
viewing the desktop background. This does not happen when driving the
GPU with the closed NVIDIA driver.

[Bug 1783954] [NEW] [NVIDIA] GPU lockup (screen freeze) after resume from hibernation / suspend

2018-07-27 Thread YS1
Public bug reported:

This bug is reported against xorg as per
. It is also reported
to NVIDIA under
.

I have been experiencing GPU lockups after resuming from hibernation on
KUbuntu 18.04.

When this happens, the display freezes except for the mouse cursor. It
is possible to ssh into the computer but killing X does not update the
display either.

These lockups seem to happen at a random time after hibernation. Sometimes the
computer works correctly for hours after resuming, sometimes the lockup happen
a few seconds after resuming. Actions that are prone to trigger the lockup are :
 - hovering over some task in KDE/Plasma panel and causing the miniature of the
application window to be displayed (when a lockup happens, it is often when I
do this, but doing this does not systematically incur a lockup) ;
 - with Spectacle (screenshot utility), start selecting a rectangular region
(this has systematically caused a lockup when tried after resuming from
hibernation/suspend).

Following I tried
with the latest graphics drivers from the graphics-drivers PPA, the
latest version of Xorg in the xorg-edgers PPA and the latest available
kernel (4.17.0-996-generic).

Attached are some logs, including a partial log produced by nvidia-bug-report.
Indeed, the script could not complete. Inspection of the running processes with
a second ssh connection while the script was hanging up shows that the blocking
point is [code]cat /proc/driver/nvidia/./gpus/:01:00.0/information[/code].
Indeed, trying to manually read that file in the ssh console also caused it to
hang. Of course doing this in normal operation works and gives

[Bug 1780598] [NEW] grub does not allow to specify recovery-only kernel options

2018-07-08 Thread YS1
Public bug reported:

In /etc/default/grub are two variables that enable customization of
kernel options : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT for non-recovery entries and
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX for all entries (both recovery and non-recovery).

It is not possible to specify kernel options to be used for recovery
entries but not regular ones, which in my case is problematic as
modesetting parameters are at a contradiction in those cases.

I propose that the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_RECOVERY variable would allow to
do so. This requires exporting this variable in the grub-mkconfig
script, so that it can be read by the 10_linux script.

There, I propose to keep the usual behaviour when the variable has not
been set, and to completely eschew it when the variable is set.

I am reporting here as it appears that upstream grub 10_linux does not
have a mechanism for recovery entries at all, so I think it is Ubuntu
specific.

[Bug 1780146] [NEW] nvidia module crashes unless grub boots in blind mode

2018-07-04 Thread YS1
Public bug reported:

I am using the nvidia proprietary driver for my GM107GL [Quadro K620]
graphics card.

I have been having problems regarding suspend, hibernation and user
switching because the driver crashes on changing virtual terminals.

I have been using various settings and various major and minor versions
of the nvidia driver. Also tried the nvidia DRM modesetting driver (with
it, the crash happens before even the lightdm prompt).

The only configurations where this problem does not happen is when,
originally because of a typo in /etc/default/grub, Grub boots in "blind
mode" instead of graphical or text mode.

This problem is also reported to Nvidia

[Bug 1722269] Re: No graphical boot with 4.4.0-96 and NVIDIA GeForce 840M

2017-10-12 Thread YS1
When I use apport, it usually opens a tab in my web browser to ask me to
authenticate and allow access. Since I do not get to a graphical
interface with -97 and nvidia, I did not see how I could process.

How can I ?

2017-10-11 Thread YS1
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

My computer (using XUbuntu 16.04) boots and works normally with kernel
4.4.0-92 but upgrading to 4.4.0-96 prevents lightdm from starting. In
fact, the GPU detection service fails.

The problem also appears with proposed 4.4.0-97.

I tested with mainline kernel 4.13. It boots to lightdm but it is
difficult to exactly tell what happens as some modules for my hardware
were not found/compiled/installed (as a result, I cannot connect to wifi
  with this kernel).

GPU is GEForce 840M with proprietary nvidia 475 drivers (purged and
  reinstalled once).

[Bug 1722269] Re: No graphical boot with 4.4.0-96 and NVIDIA GeForce 840M

2017-10-10 Thread YS1
Following your suggestion, I switched to nouveau using the Ubuntu GUI.

To my dismay, I was then not able to boot graphically in -96 but also
not in -92 and various earlier kernels. Same error message : the gpu-
manager.service failed.

I installed the nouveau-firmware package and was then able to boot
correctly in all of these kernel versions.

But still not using the nvidia driver in -96.

So apart from the nouveau-firmware not being installed by the Ubuntu
drivers GUI glitch, no, this bug does not happen with nouveau.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1722269] [NEW] No graphical boot with 4.4.0-96 and NVIDIA 475

2017-10-09 Thread YS1
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1652499] Re: Cannot hibernate properly ; systemd-sleep hangs

2017-08-03 Thread YS1
Setting SYSTEMD_BYPASS_HIBERNATION_MEMORY_CHECK dos not change anything
but this seems logical as this was introduced in a recent version of
systemd and does not exist in systemd 229.

Creating a /etc/systemd/sleep.conf with SuspendState=mem (to avoid
cycling through different suspending modes) does nto improve things
either.

When this problem occurs (ie. suspend process started but hanging), I
cannot manually write mem to /sys/power/state ; trying to do so fails
with a "device is busy" error.

** Summary changed:

- Cannot hibernate properly ; systemd-sleep hangs
+ Cannot hibernate or suspend properly ; systemd-sleep hangs

[Bug 1652499] Re: Cannot hibernate properly ; systemd-sleep hangs

2017-07-24 Thread YS1
Judging by the absence of the line "Hibernation is possible, Active" in
the log when this problem occurs, I think that the execution of systemd-
sleep does not reach line 256 in sleep-config.c
which is part of a function named
enough_memory_for_hibernation and is indirectly called by line 208 in
sleep.c
.

I will set the SYSTEMD_BYPASS_HIBERNATION_MEMORY_CHECK environment
variable to true as this seems to shortcut this function.

[Bug 1652499] Re: Cannot hibernate properly ; systemd-sleep hangs

2017-07-03 Thread YS1
Update : this is still happening. This also happens with suspend-to-RAM.

When this happens, it is still possible to order another hibernation :
usually this triggers the first hibernation process to proceed. On
powering the machine on again, the systems thaws and immediately
hibernates again (presumably because of the second order). One can then
thaw.

[Bug 1675683] Re: Computer sluggish/irresponsive for several minutes after hibernation

2017-04-25 Thread YS1
Thanks you again for investigating this. It has been difficult to find
similar cases because I do not really know how to describe the problem
in English, making it difficult to use search engines.

I tried rdmsr -a 0x19a and it gives back 0 as seems to be normal.

Here are the logs you suggested to make. I do not understand them all in
depth, but the dstat log clearly indicates that on resuming, the swap
contains 392 MB more data than before hibernating, and that this data is
being put back into RAM. This is completely consistent with the
symptoms.

[Bug 1675683] Re: Computer sluggish/irresponsive for several minutes after hibernation

2017-03-24 Thread YS1
** Description changed:

  Hi,
my computer is very sluggish for a good five minutes after thawing from
hibernation.

Booting the system and the thawing process in itself seems to run fine :
the console displays the progress of reloading contents into RAM at a
satisfying pace, then the lightdm unlock interface displays.

From this point on, things become strange : the computer has an constant
and intense hard drive activity and applications do not respond to input
in a swift manner (moving the mouse cursor works in "real time" though,
and the clock, which displays seconds, also works almost normally).

This reminds me of what happens when you set focus back to an
application that had been paged to swap : it is irresponsive until it is
back in RAM. Except this happens for all applications at once.

+ This stops after several minutes (more than five) and the computer
+ becomes usable again.
+
I experienced the problem today again. The current RAM usage is 7.2 Gio
  / 15.6 Gio and swap usage is 4.2 Gio / 31.3 Gio.

  firefox 3.4 Gio
  firefox (other instance) 1.7 Gio
  thunderbird 624 Mio
  xfwm4 213 Mio

So far, it seems to improve things : no problem to this day (but it used

[Bug 1652499] [NEW] Cannot hibernate properly ; systemd-sleep hangs

2016-12-25 Thread YS1
Public bug reported:

Hello,
on recent kernels including 4.4.0-57-generic, I observe more often than not the
following behaviour after clicking the Hibernate button in XFCE4 interface :

1. Screen becomes black
2. No hard drive activity, which is suspicious
3. Moving the mouse shows the "locked screen" lightdm prompt
4. Unlocking the session, I get back to it ; things seems to work as usual
except the ethernet connection is down
5. ps aux | grep hib shows that there is a /lib/systemd/systemd-sleep
hibernate running
6. if I kill this process, the computer finally hibernates
7. booting the computer again resumes the session (with networking enabled) but
with persistent graphical glitches on some parts of the interface, most visibly
  a. in my terminal, all occurrences of the letter b are scrambled
  b. in all windows, the maximise/minimise/close buttons are scrambled.
