[Bug 861283] [NEW] no longer working after latest dist upgrade

2011-09-28 Thread Zak B. Elep
Public bug reported:

No longer works at launch, after today's Oneiric dist upgrade.
Apparently it doesn't even create connections anymore, and loading a new
torrent to download via URL takes forever; also does not respond
immediately on quitting the application, prompting me to kill -9 it.

Even transmission-cli doesn't work anymore; had to use rtorrent instead.

[Bug 857554] [NEW] Sound notifications do not update, stuck at zero volume

2011-09-23 Thread Zak B. Elep
Public bug reported:

OSD popups for volume level change via function keys are now broken
sometime after Beta 1 upgrade, even now at latest Beta 2. The visual
display bar doesn't change at zero volume level, while the volume icon
changes only between mute and 1/3 level. Audible hints and indicator-
sound-service however are not affected; popping sound behavior is ok
when going from zero to full volume and back, as well as the visual
hints on the indicator-sound-service in panel.

[Bug 846280] [NEW] Regression in Linux shrew 2.1.7 - OpenBSD 4.8+ roadwarrior VPN

2011-09-10 Thread Zak B. Elep
Public bug reported:

ike could not complete phase1 negotiation to an OpenBSD 4.8/4.9 VPN
gateway; it times out. Previous version of shrew in Linux dist (version
2.1.5 in natty) completes this negotiation and connects fine, and as a
workaround I have kept packages of 2.1.5 installed on Oneiric
(preventing upgrade to 2.1.7).

[Bug 838981] [NEW] Upgrade to Beta 1 does not install grub to partition

2011-09-01 Thread Zak B. Elep
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
Release:11.10

grub-pc:
  Installed: 1.99-11ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.99-11ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1.99-11ubuntu1 0
500 http://tw.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Prior setup is a Natty Install on /dev/sda5, with grub2 installed on
that same partition, as laptop has a Windows installation in /dev/sda2,
and the Windows boot manager is used as the main, chainloading to grub
when Ubuntu is desired.

Upgrade to Oneiric Beta 1 seems to have a grub2 that does not allow
itself being installed in /dev/sda5, as seen in /var/log/dist-upgrade
/apt-term.log...

/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk
or to a partition. This is a BAD idea..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be
installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are
UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists.

...first reboot after upgrade left the Windows boot manager intact, but
choosing to boot Ubuntu with it leads to a blank screen, meaning there's
no grub2 in /dev/sda5; I find it odd that the upgrade removed it.

Workaround was to boot with a rescue CD (e.g. Natty live CD) and chroot
to /dev/sda5 to do `grub-install /dev/sda'; while this works now, this
may be undesirable for those using non-Linux boot loaders as their
primary boot manager.

[Bug 160454] Re: [pcre3] several security issues in Perl-Compatible Regular Expression library

2007-11-20 Thread Zak B. Elep
Running Kubuntu Gutsy with the following rdepends on libpcre3 installed:

ii kmobiletools 0.4.3.3-0ubuntu1 KDE application for
controlling your mobile
ii kontact 4:3.5.7enterprise20070926-0ubuntu2 KDE pim application

KDE
ii nmap 4.20-2 The Network Mapper
ii wireshark-common 0.99.6rel-3network traffic
analyser (common files)

The only couple of things that are somewhat odd since my update to the
proposed pcre3 is that ktorrent would seem to eat a lot more processing
than usual, giving the appearance of a hanged app; the same in kopete
(although it happens less, but then again I also use that package less
than the former.) But then again, they may also be issues unrelated to
this.

[Bug 108451] Re: [Edgy] gnome-ppp doesn't kill wvdial properly

2007-08-19 Thread Zak B. Elep
I received word from Andrew Howlett regarding this matter. He says:

The first bug is #108451 at launchpad.net. When you start dialing with
gnome-ppp, then click on the cancel button before the modem connects,
then gnome-ppp fails to kill the wvdial process. Because wvdial is
still running in the background any subsequent attempts to access the
modem fail (device busy). The solution is very easy: in
 gnome-ppp-connecting.c change

 if (kill (wvdial.pid, 2)  0)

 to

 if (kill (wvdial.pid, 9)  0)

[Bug 84837] Re: Gnome PPP dialogue doesn't send one-time passwords to wvdial

2007-08-19 Thread Zak B. Elep
I have received word from Andrew Howlett with regard to this bug. He
says:

The second problem is #84837. When you leave the save password
checkbox unchecked then gnome-ppp fails to send the password. This is
a very simple problem. The problem is that gnome-ppp is sending the
password to stdout, not the wvdial pipe. To fix this change line 72 in
 gnome-ppp-wvdial.c

 change
   in = g_io_channel_unix_new ((guint)data);
 to
   in = g_io_channel_unix_new (wvdial.in_pipe);

[Bug 77589] Re: debootstrap can't chroot

2007-04-29 Thread Zak B. Elep
After a few moments I got a Debian sid debootstrap successfully
completed.

The workaround for me was to create a symlink of

so that the chroot's mount of /proc will work.

[Bug 77589] Re: debootstrap can't chroot

2007-04-28 Thread Zak B. Elep
Can confirm this on an attempt to debootstrap a Debian sid chroot under
Feisty.

Running the command where the `W' warning emits (chroot /mnt/usb mount
-t proc proc /proc) shows that libdevmapper isn't present in the chroot,
which is somewhat required by the mount call on /proc to succeed.
Including that in the debootstrap invocation ( e.g.
`--include=dmsetup,libdevmapper1.02' or libdevmapper1.02.1 when pulling
from Debian sid) should work.

[Bug 104794] Re: guidance-power-manager shows dischanging if battery full

2007-04-22 Thread Zak B. Elep
This bug still seems to affect Feisty, post-release; I am experiencing
kde-guidance-powermanager telling me my battery is fully charged (when
it is not) and the battery icon in a plugged-in (AC) mode (even when it
is not.) Because the icon in the notification area doesn't change as
the battery discharge progresses, this may confuse users.

Setting this back to Confirmed; importance to Medium since this won't
really break existing Feisty installs, but only confuse the user.

[Bug 88254] Re: xserver fails to start - missing FontPath in xorg.xonf

2007-02-27 Thread Zak B. Elep
Setting to High as this will break X on the next reboot (even across
hibernates.)

The breakage is caused by the new xserver-xorg package installing a
symlink to /usr/share/fonts/X11 on /usr/share/X11/fonts, but on systems
up to the previous revision or xorg, /usr/share/X11/fonts is a
directory, and this appears to be not handled gracefully by the upgrade
(it doensn't even appear to make dpkg break :/)

Two additional workarounds will work in light of the fact above:

 - move the existing /usr/share/X11/fonts somewhere, then do `apt-get install
--reinstall xserver-xorg`
 - move the existing /usr/share/X11/fonts somewhere, then do `cd /usr/share/X11
 ln -sf ../fonts/X11 fonts`

[Bug 84668] adds misleading double entry to swapon

2007-02-11 Thread Zak B. Elep
Public bug reported:

devmapper appears to have doubled my available swap space from ~1.5 GB
to ~3.0 GB, as shown by `free -m`:

 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 1003987 15 0 6624
-/+ buffers/cache:357645
Swap: 3153 25 3128

However, `swapon -s` reports the following:

FilenameTypeSizeUsedPriority
/dev/hda5 partition 1614492 25796 -1
/dev/mapper/hda5partition 1614492 0 -2

It appears therefore that devmapper is doubling my swap without looking
at the previous swap setup in /etc/fstab , hence causing Linux to think
that there's more swap than it seems.

The MSI MegaBook S262 utilizes a Fn+{F4,F5} hotkey shortcut for
adjusting the brightness of the laptop's LCD display. While the

[Bug 80704] Re: doesn't show wireless networks anymore

2007-02-03 Thread Zak B. Elep
I can confirm this on my MSI MegaBook S262 with ipw3945. Upon initial
setup of knetworkmanager, it does not detect my home wireless network
signal immediately (which, although I have configured to not currently
broadcast its SSID, should have been detected by knetworkmanager anyway
as a hidden network); I had to open the tray icon's dialog and select
`Connect to other wireless network' and manually connect from there.

When I hibernated and resumed later on, knetworkmanager also fails to
autoreconnect to my network, even now that it is known and is on the
`Trusted' set of networks. I still had to manually connect using the
aforementioned menu selection.

Running latest Feisty as of 2007-02-03.

[Bug 69208] Re: Bug #42299 survives on upgrade from Dapper Drake to Edgy

2006-11-11 Thread Zak B. Elep
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 42299 ***

I can confirm this on my Kubuntu Dapper - Edgy upgrade on an MSI

only part of the bug.

[Bug 31312] Re: failed resume from hibernate leaves corrupted/unmounted swap partition

2006-11-05 Thread Zak B. Elep
My swap space is at /dev/hda5 per /proc/swaps . The result of `file'
before hibernating is:

/dev/hda5: Linux/i386 swap file (new style) 1 (4K pages) size 403624
pages

After hibernating and subsequent (failing) resume, `file' now emits:

/dev/hda5: Linux/i386 swap file (new style) with SWSUSP1 image

I suppose that is normal.

As for /proc/swaps after hibernate, it is empty (as I should expect,
since swapon fails.)

[Bug 31312] Re: pmi action hibernate = normal shutdown

2006-11-04 Thread Zak B. Elep
I seem to be hitting this bug under Kubuntu 6.10, upgrading from Dapper
using a multitude of dist-upgrades.[0] However, in my case, upon the
boot just after hibernate, it seems that my swap partition could not be
read, forcing the mounting process to bypass it. A manual `swapon`
doesn't work either, borking with an `Invalid argument' message.

[0] http://zakame.spunge.org/blog/2006/11/01/my-kubuntu-edgy-upgrade-
experience/

I seemed to have found a workaround however, by booting with
`resume=/dev/hdaX' on the the kernel CLI (and removing `ro' to mount /
read-write, as leaving that will force me to do `mount /dev/hdaX / -o
remount,rw` on a sudo.)

[Bug 61349] postinst error: update-rc.d uses nonexistent `multiuser' setting

2006-09-19 Thread Zak B. Elep
Public bug reported:

I just dist-upgraded my Dapper today, and found out that flashplugin-
nonfree didn't set itself up correctly. Turns out that it borked during
postinst, since it was invoking the `update-rc.d' tool incorrectly,
trying to use a nonexistent `multiuser' runlevel group.

My fix was to change `multiuser' to `defaults', but I'm not sure if this
is the right fix. At any rate, however, that action did satisfy `dpkg
--pending --configure`, and I got my dpkg sane again.
