[Bug 1056060] Re: entry missed from menu

2012-10-12 Thread ankspo71
The gufw desktop file located at /usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop has a
line inside it that says
OnlyShowIn=Unity; which prevents it from appearing in other desktops. This
might affect gnome-classic too. I'm using Kubuntu Quantal 64bit and gufw didn't
appear in my KDE menu originally. I had to comment out the OnlyShowIn=Unity;
line to get it to appear.

gksudo gedit /usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop
(Kubuntu users can use kdesudo kate /usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop)

Change the line that says:
OnlyShowIn=Unity;
to this:
# OnlyShowIn=Unity;

Save the file. If gufw does not appear in the menu within in few
seconds, then you would probably need to log out then log back in.

[Bug 819717] [NEW] kgmailnotifier shows incorrect number of emails on bootup

2011-08-02 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Every time I reboot my computer, kgmailnotifier's icon in the system
tray says I have 3 unread emails, but if I hover over the same icon it
says No New Messages and if I click on the same icon it says No New
Mail. There is no email when I visit my Gmail account also. The
problem seems to correct itself after I receive my first email though.
Also, If I repeatedly right click on the icon to Check Gmail Now, it
will replace its own icon with the lastfm player icon installed on my
system, then later it will eventually restore its own icon.

[Bug 773427] [NEW] Ubuntu Desktop Guide - reference to Activities Overview

2011-04-29 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

Hello, I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and inside the Ubuntu Desktop Guide (the
help application found in dash), there is strong reference to a gnome-
shell specific feature. You can read it at Ubuntu Desktop Guide
Windows and workspaces What is a workspace, and how will it help me?.
This page talks about (and links to features of) Activities Overview
which is part of gnome-shell only and even includes a screenshot of
gnome-shell's workspaces.

Is it possible to remove these references to gnome-shell and Gnome3 from this
documentation, or at least mention that these features are not part of Unity?
Thanks.

[Bug 616763] Re: Launching alternate Window Manager changes default Window Manager with no option to reset

2010-10-11 Thread ankspo71
Hi,
While attempting to reproduce this problem for someone else at
ubuntuforums.org, I found myself stuck with the same problem too in Ubuntu
10.10. While in a Ubuntu Desktop session metacity --replace and sudo
update-alternatives --config x-window-manager did not help at all. The results
were always the same, Ubuntu Desktop session always had the e16 window manager
running instead of metacity. Ever since trying out an e16-gnome session, I was
also having trouble with indicator-appmenu from my Ubuntu Netbook session
which was covering my main menus in my Ubuntu Desktop session. We both had
ubuntu-desktop, ubuntu-netbook and e16 desktops installed. I offered the e16
removal advice as follows, which works well for me.

Remove e16 and its dependencies:
$ sudo apt-get remove e16
$ sudo apt-get autoremove
Now if you don't have any window borders, try this:
$ sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager
(choose metacity)
Now restart, or log out and log back in.

---Part 2---
If you still don't have any window borders for your applications, try this:
$ metacity --replace
Your window borders should appear correctly now.
If that works, go to System Preferences Startup Applications and create a
new entry for metacity --replace.
 Name = Metacity
 Command = metacity --replace
Now restart your computer and see if that Startup Application entry works. This
will be only a temporary solution.

---Part 3---
IF (only if), you have a problem with indicator-appmenu like I am (it is like a
global menu) automatically appearing on your panel of your Ubuntu Desktop
session, and covering your menus, try this:
$ sudo apt-get remove indicator-appmenu
$ sudo apt-get autoremove
Now restart, or log out and log in and the appmenu problem should be gone.

This solution works well for me, and I have successfully restarted a 'normal'
Ubuntu Desktop session about 10 times already.
Ubuntu forums post for anyone interested:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1593463
Thanks.

[Bug 562092] Re: [Lucid] cdrom drive not recognized automatically

2010-05-28 Thread ankspo71
Update: For about 2.5 days now, my dvd drive has been working perfectly
in Ubuntu/Kubuntu Lucid (both live cds and installs). It mounts
automatically and burns every time now. It is possible that my external
drive was interfering with the performance of my internal dvd drive and
also my wireless internet connection. There have been no problems with
either ever since I disconnected the external drive. This problem only
occurred in Ubuntu/Kubuntu with the 2.6.32.* kernels though. Newer PPA
kernals had no problems in *ubuntu, as well as PClinuxOS 2010 and
Windows XP.

[Bug 562092] Re: [Lucid] cdrom drive not recognized automatically

2010-05-24 Thread ankspo71
I have been watching this topic because it has been effecting me too.
It was only effecting my internal dvd burner drive, but not my usb
connected external dvd burner. I hae also exchange my internal drive
with another computer's and that drive wouldn't mount either.

I believe the v2.6.32 kernels contain a bug that prevent some of us from
mounting cds because it has been the case with me.
I tested 2 PPA kernels on Kubuntu Lucid today (fresh install for this test),
creating cds and they worked as they should. They both allowed me to mount and
dismount automatically, blank, burn iso's and data cds, and browse cds without
problems. They are working fine with K3B, Dolphin, and the Device Notifier
widget. I also rebooted several times to see if I would make the problem
reappear, but it hasn't.

Kernels that won't mount my cd drive properly:
linux-image-generic-2.6.32.21.22
linux-image-generic-2.6.32.22.23

Working Kernels:
linux-image-2.6.33-02063301-generic_2.6.33-02063301_i386
(v2.6.33.1-lucid)
linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386
(v2.6.34-lucid)

They can be found here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Possible solution:
I think we should move on to the v2.6.33 or greater kernels for Lucid.

2010-05-10 Thread ankspo71
It was happening to me too, but it went away after installing the Nvidia

connected with the neauvou driver? Whatever was causing it, it seemed
like KDE was failing to rewrite the new locations of the widgets. I'm

[Bug 574241] [NEW] cdrom randomly fails to mount in Lucid

2010-05-03 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

My data discs randomly don't mount. A reboot seems to help, but not
always. Eject also doesn't work correctly (it snaps shut immediately
after opening after burning). Recently K3B reported that my cdrom could
not be unmounted. I tried replacing my cd drive from a new drive from
another computer, but it didn't help so I continue to use the original.
I'm currently using Kubuntu Lucid, but I can confirm this occurs with
Ubuntu Lucid. I purchased a USB external cd burner as a temporary
solution and it appears to be uneffected by any symptom, so this might
only apply to internal cd drives. Another interesting problem is that I
can run the command 'sudo lshw' only one time, because it fails to
collect any data the second time. 'sudo lshw' will work again after a
reboot. Thanks.

[Bug 528172] Re: desktopcouch-service crashed with IOError in __init__()

2010-04-12 Thread ankspo71
I get the same crash message whenever I launch firefox 3.6.3. I am using
the bindwood addon 1.0.3 although I'm not sure if it would trigger the
crash with desktopcouch-service.

Correction: In my case, the uninstallation of the bindwood firefox addon stops
desktopcouch-service from crashing. Maybe I should have filed this report under
a separate bug for bindwood;
bindwood triggers this error when launching firefox:

[Bug 399016] Re: kanjisaver does not appear as a screen saver in KDE4.2

2010-04-09 Thread ankspo71
I would like to add that I can get kanjisaver to work 'as a screensaver'
in KDE4xx but only if I replace kblankscrn.kss with kanjisaver.kss,
after making a backup of the original kblankscrn.kss. They are located
in the /usr/bin directory. For some reason, unknown to me, kanjisaver is
not recognized as a screensaver but will work if it pretends to be the
'blank screen' screensaver (or possibly others). If I can get it to
work, then there must be something simple stopping it from being listed
as a screensaver in the screensaver settings menu.

To enable the kanjisaver screensaver (by commands)
$ sudo mv /usr/bin/kblankscrn.kss /usr/bin/kblankscrn.kss.bak
$ sudo mv /usr/bin/kanjisaver.kss /usr/bin/kblankscrn.kss

You should now be able to select the blank screen screensaver to use
the kanjisaver.

To restore the original blank screen screensaver:
$ sudo mv /usr/bin/kblankscrn.kss /usr/bin/kanjisaver.kss
$ sudo mv /usr/bin/kblankscrn.kss.bak /usr/bin/kblankscrn.kss

kanjisaver version 0.9.10-1ubuntu1
Kubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 (Lucid Lynx)
'kannasaver' also has this problem of not being listed as a screensaver in KDE4

[Bug 559416] [NEW] Pysdm incorrectly shows sda1 as sdb2

2010-04-09 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pysdm

pysdm incorrectly displays my root partition / sda1 as sdb2. It also
claims that the mountpoint is sdb2. If I choose to configure that drive
like it asks me to do, it could be disasterous for some users causing
Ubuntu to not be able to boot. I am enclosing a screenshot of pysdm and
a copy of my fstab. Despite having this problem with the root hdd
partition, I can ignore it and use pysdm to sucessfully configure sdb2
to automount for any user on startup.

My current hard drive configuration is:
80gb hard drive (IDE), with Kubuntu on sda1 and Ubuntu on sda2, both ext4
120gb hard drive (IDE), with 4gb swap on sdb1, and remaining as storage on
sdb2, both ext4

I suspect that pysdm has trouble reading UUIDs, as they are used in my
fstab file.

[Bug 546721] [NEW] Firefox 3.6 has problems with drag and drop feature in Lucid Beta 1

2010-03-25 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Hello,
The drag and drop features for Firefox 3.6 are partially broken in Ubuntu (and
Kubuntu) Lucid Beta 1 with all available updates applied. The ability to
install addons by dragging and dropping them into the addons window rarely
works and the ability to drag and drop URLs onto the desktop to create internet
shortcuts rarely works too. The problem also occurs with new firefox profiles.
If any other users here need to know a work around for installing addons, I am
now temporarily installing my favorite downloaded addons by right clicking on
them and choosing to Open with Other Application, then selecting Firefox.
Firefox is not showing any errors when run from the terminal. Thanks,

[Bug 537499] Re: Conky hides itself behind nautilus desktop

@ Cesare Tirabassi
Excellent advice, thanks. I opened .conkyrc , changed the line own_window_type
desktop to own_window_type override and it solved the problem. As you can
see I'm not an experienced conky user but it seems a little odd to me that
Ubuntu would choose to use own_window_type desktop if it changes the focus
between conky and the desktop. :-) Thanks for the help. Problem solved.

[Bug 537499] [NEW] Conky hides itself behind nautilus desktop

2010-03-11 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: conky

Conky hides itself behind nautilus desktop.

I installed the conky-all package and have been using the default .conkyrc
configuration. The problem I am having is conky will display on my desktop
as expected, but as soon as I click on my desktop, conky instantly hides itself
behind the desktop. If I click on any open application windows, it
does not hide itself. It is strictly related to clicking directly on the
desktop. It continues to run hidden afterwards providing no error messages,
even if I run it in debug mode 'conky -D' in the terminal. See strace logs
included as attachments.

I just tried to compile conky-all from the same package source in the
Lucid repositories and it behaved the same way. Conky still hides behind
the nautilus desktop when I click on the desktop.

2010-03-02 Thread ankspo71
This problem effects me too. I tried installing a metacity theme packed in a
tar.gz archive by dragging it over the appearance preferences window. The theme
looked like it was going to install but it didn't and crashed the appearance
preferences.
I am using Ubuntu desktop-i386 daily-build 01-Mar-2010 (Lucid alpha3).

[Bug 529563] Re: Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.

2010-03-01 Thread ankspo71
*Fixed*

I downloaded and burned a copy of ubuntu desktop daily build (lucid-
desktop-i386.iso 28-Feb-2010) and it works as expected. The splash
screen works (including plymouth), my monitor doesn't turn off anymore,
and I am able to run a live session and or install ubuntu, either from
the initial boot menu or from the live desktop.

By the way, I tried to do what was said in response #3 by waiting for
the desktop to finish loading then try to get my screen back, but it
didn't help. Using Ctrl+Alt+F1 (and F2) then Ctrl+Alt+F7 had no effect
on my monitor. My problem must be different from the other user's
because I think the user's monitor didn't get shut off, but mine did.

Live CD output of uname -a:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-14-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Sat Feb 20 05:38:50 UTC 2010 i686
GNU/Linux

2010-03-01 Thread ankspo71
To StoatWblr and foxy123,
Have you tried the most recent builds of Lucid Alpha 3 (daily-builds)?
Desktop Live CD = http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
Alternate CD = http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/
I tried the most recent live cd (32bit) and it solved my live cd booting
problem above.

[Bug 529563] [NEW] Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.

2010-02-28 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Hello,
Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 Live CD.
The problem I am having is the live cd will only get as far as the cd's boot
menu, and when I select either install or live cd, something shuts off my
monitor and the power button blinks (no output to monitor I think). I tried
this several times without setting special boot options, and several times with
random boot options but I still can't get it too keep power to my monitor. This
also happens with the check cd for errors option. Being that I have no display
afterwards and the live cd is session only I have no log files or error
messages to look at. If it is not the Nouveau drivers, then it might be
ubiquity or xorg crashing my display.

It is not a problem with my monitor, because I am running Lucid alpha3
as we speak. Also, virtualbox ose in Karmic had no problem running the
iso image of Lucid-alpha3. I md5'ed the iso and it checks out fine. The
problem is only booting the cd from my PC. Another observation is the
lack of display does not prevent Lucid Alpha 3 live cd from booting into
a live session, because after 5 minutes or more I can here the ubuntu
login sound eventually.

I finally managed to get alpha 3 installed on my computer, but to do
that I had to perform the upgrade (update-manager -d) over my 9.10
installation. I couldn't use a free partition like I was hoping. Prior
to the Karmic to Lucid upgrade, I installed the proprietary Nvidia
graphics card driver to ensure I had working drivers after the upgrade.
I believe the driver series was 185. This driver does not show up in the
window of the hardware manager in Lucid alpha3. Instead, it shows I have
two of them activated, but not currently in use. The names of them are
version current and nVida/Riva/TNT/GeForce.

My graphics card is a MSI branded Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS PCI Express x16. A
list of my hardware is included with this bug report.

[Bug 529563] Re: Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.

2010-02-28 Thread ankspo71
Hello
I have tried the actual alpha3 desktop cd and the ubuntu desktop daily build (I
think dated 26-Feb-2010). Neither worked for me. I will try the 28-Feb-2010
daily build tonight to see if it has improved. The only way I can install Lucid
is by upgrading from Karmic. I haven't tried the alt cd yet, which I suppose I
should also try.

What happens with the live cd is, when I boot into the live cd, I see
the splash screen appear as normal, and then finally the menu which
gives me the choices of what to do. After I select my language
(english), I go to select one of the options (try this without making
any changes..., install ubuntu, etc) then when it starts to load the
desktop or ubiquity, immediately my monitor powers off. After the
monitor powers off, which doesn't allow me to turn back on while the
live cd is running, I can see my cpu is still loading the live cd
because of the cpu indicator light is still going strong. I can even
hear the ubuntu login sound if I turn my speakers up high enough if I
tried to start a live session. It is like the live cd is disabling my
graphics card. I have no output on the screen at all, it is just black
with no sign of light behind it, and the monitor's power button blinks
continuously. It blinks the same way when I shut off my computer and
forget to turn off the monitor.

uname -a on the command line of the live cd causes the live cd to exit and boot
my installed Lucid.
uname -a in this installed version says:
ja...@james-karmic:~$ uname -a
Linux James-Karmic 2.6.32-14-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Sat Feb 20 05:38:50 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux
(ignore the karmic machine name)

Also, I had no problems at all booting from 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 and 9.10 live cds.
Thanks,

[Bug 507975] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2010-01-19 Thread ankspo71
To Sebastien,
I can still recreate the bug almost consistantly. The first time it happened it
involved me using my second hard drive, but I am seeing this happen in any
location I paste large files or directories into, including desktop to desktop
to make a copies of files.

All I need to do is copy a large file like an ISO image, or a large
group of miscellaneous files in a folder, then paste the contents into
another location. When the progress window opens up (the one that has
the title file operations), it goes to about 90% and then crashes, and
it also crashes any nautilus windows I have open. If I copy a very large
amount of files (5gb or more), I can see my screen go from lite to dark
several times during each transfer and the progress staggers. It appears
that my files are unharmed and they actually completed every transfer
every time. I can still copy and paste without crashing if the transfer
size is small enough to not start the progress file operations window.

Normally I don't have an indicator applet in use because I like only using a
single panel. Also, I didn't have this problem in Lucid Alpha 1. If I find
anything else to add, I'll be back later.
Thanks for the help

[Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)

2010-01-13 Thread ankspo71
Hi Antti Kaihola,
This is a clean install of Lucid Alpha 1 (i386) with no updates applied (I'm
avoiding a partial upgrade) but with some various applications installed. All
directory files do end in the .directory extension.

However, you have helped me find the problem. None of the applications
(except for the ones I have added entries for) have the *.desktop
extension in the folder ~/.local/share/applications .

wine-extension-rtf.desktop
wine-extension-txt.desktop
wine-extension-wri.desktop
wine-extension-xml.desktop
xsane

Changing the ' firefox ' file to ' firefox.desktop ' allows me to change
the property values of firefox in alacarte.

On the other hand, every file in the /usr/share/applications folder
does have a *.desktop extension.

Whatever it is that is responsible for creating *.desktop extensions is
failing to do so during ubuntu installation, and while using apt-get. I
used command line apt-get to install my favorite applications from the
ubuntu repositories. I have a few applications listed there that I have
installed using another method... sh GoogleEarthLinux.run for
example.

So it looks like I will have to rename each file (application entry) in the ls
/home/james/.local/share/applications directory to .desktop if I want to
edit them in alacarte.
Thanks.

[Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)

2010-01-13 Thread ankspo71
I managed to fix it. I downloaded a new alacarte source package and
compiled the source code myself. I can now edit any menu entry in
alacarte.

If anyone needs to fix alacarte in Ubuntu Lucid (alpha 1) (gnome-
desktop), because you are unable to edit the entries in the gnome menu,
see below.

I got alacarte from gnome 2.29.4 - alacarte version 0.12.4 found here:
http://www.icewalkers.com/download/GNOME/1075/dld/

I think the dependencies were intltool and libgnome-menu-dev
(when you run ./configure it will tell you)

./configure
make
sudo make install

you might need to reboot the system, if not log out and back in again.

Also, I was advised that *.desktop files are not present in the
~/.local/share/applications folder by default, so I am mistaken about
that part in my earlier post.

Probable Bug Solution:
I think alacarte needs to be recompiled for i386 desktop (Lucid alpha 1) before
alpha 2 is released.
Thanks,

[Bug 499754] [NEW] I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)

2009-12-23 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

Hello,
Sometimes I am unable to edit a menu entry in alacarte, but sometimes I can. If
I click on the properties button for the menu entries, it sometimes fails to
open, however, If I continue to click on the properties button to other random

[Bug 498130] [NEW] Emerald crashes when selecting themes. Ubuntu 10.04 (Alpha1)

Hello,
Emerald Theme Manger crashes and makes it difficult to work with.

Using the command ' emerald --replace ' works without errors and each
and every emerald theme is applied successfully. Although the following
crashes below makes it difficult to change between themes:

1.) Launching from the terminal DOES let me change themes, because it
will change the theme first, and then crash.

2.) Launching Emerald Theme Manager from the shortcut in Gnome's

crashes instantly when I try to select a different theme.

[Bug 496901] [NEW] virtualbox-ose-guest-x11 wants to remove critical system files (Lucid Alpha 1)

2009-12-15 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose-guest-x11

Hello,
I did not install this package because I saw that this package wants to remove
ubuntu-desktop, xorg, xserver-xorg, xsever-xorg-core, and related files. I was
using Synaptic Package Manager and when I toggled the checkbox to install the
package, I was alerted that it wanted to remove the above packages. I feel this
is critical because anyone interested in installing virtualbox OSE could end up
losing their graphical interface. This list of packages to be removed does not
match the dependencies list in synaptic either.

[Bug 61240] Re: when renaming a file, Shift-del removes the file, not the text

2009-12-14 Thread ankspo71
Hello,

I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 10.04 alpha 1. I also feel that this is a
serious bug as it can cause anyone to loose an entire directory of files
permanently.

[Bug 459005] Re: Can not log into openbox from GDM in Karmic Beta/RC

2009-10-24 Thread ankspo71
Hi Again,
I came back to let you know that I have also installed the lxde desktop and I
was able to start an lxde session easily. Since I have posted the first time, I
uninstalled openbox, changed my mirror back the main US repo, then reinstalled
openbox and I applied all of the current Karmic updates, but I still can't
launch an openbox session (or an openbox/gnome session).
Thanks,
James.

[Bug 459005] [NEW] Can not log into openbox from GDM in Karmic Beta/RC

2009-10-23 Thread ankspo71
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openbox

I can't log into an openbox session from the new GDM. I used sudo apt-
get install openbox and the openbox session appears in the session menu,
and I am able to select it, but it won't log into openbox. It keeps
bringing me right back to the GDM screen. I'm thinking that the openbox
package hasn't been updated to work with the new GDM, since I had no
trouble at all getting into openbox in Jaunty's GDM. This is openbox
version 3.4.7.2-4 for Karmic. I had this problem in Karmic Beta, and
still having the same problem in Karmic RC.

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
(Karmic Release Candidate)

apt-cache policy openbox
openbox:
  Installed: 3.4.7.2-4
  Candidate: 3.4.7.2-4
  Version table:
 *** 3.4.7.2-4 0
500 http://mirror.anl.gov karmic/universe Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

(I changed mirrors because I didn't plan on updating tonight, but I had
this same problem from the main US repo while using the beta karmic.)

Thanks,
James
