[Bug 1056060] Re: entry missed from menu
The gufw desktop file located at /usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop has a line inside it that says OnlyShowIn=Unity; which prevents it from appearing in other desktops. This might affect gnome-classic too. I'm using Kubuntu Quantal 64bit and gufw didn't appear in my KDE menu originally. I had to comment out the OnlyShowIn=Unity; line to get it to appear. gksudo gedit /usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop (Kubuntu users can use kdesudo kate /usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop) Change the line that says: OnlyShowIn=Unity; to this: # OnlyShowIn=Unity; Save the file. If gufw does not appear in the menu within in few seconds, then you would probably need to log out then log back in. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1056060 Title: entry missed from menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gui-ufw/+bug/1056060/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 616763] Re: Launching alternate Window Manager changes default Window Manager with no option to reset
Hi, While attempting to reproduce this problem for someone else at ubuntuforums.org, I found myself stuck with the same problem too in Ubuntu 10.10. While in a Ubuntu Desktop session metacity --replace and sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager did not help at all. The results were always the same, Ubuntu Desktop session always had the e16 window manager running instead of metacity. Ever since trying out an e16-gnome session, I was also having trouble with indicator-appmenu from my Ubuntu Netbook session which was covering my main menus in my Ubuntu Desktop session. We both had ubuntu-desktop, ubuntu-netbook and e16 desktops installed. I offered the e16 removal advice as follows, which works well for me. Remove e16 and its dependencies: $ sudo apt-get remove e16 $ sudo apt-get autoremove Now if you don't have any window borders, try this: $ sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager (choose metacity) Now restart, or log out and log back in. ---Part 2--- If you still don't have any window borders for your applications, try this: $ metacity --replace Your window borders should appear correctly now. If that works, go to System Preferences Startup Applications and create a new entry for metacity --replace. Name = Metacity Command = metacity --replace Now restart your computer and see if that Startup Application entry works. This will be only a temporary solution. ---Part 3--- IF (only if), you have a problem with indicator-appmenu like I am (it is like a global menu) automatically appearing on your panel of your Ubuntu Desktop session, and covering your menus, try this: $ sudo apt-get remove indicator-appmenu $ sudo apt-get autoremove Now restart, or log out and log in and the appmenu problem should be gone. This solution works well for me, and I have successfully restarted a 'normal' Ubuntu Desktop session about 10 times already. Update: For about 2.5 days now, my dvd drive has been working perfectly in Ubuntu/Kubuntu Lucid (both live cds and installs). It mounts automatically and burns every time now. [Bug 562092] Re: [Lucid] cdrom drive not recognized automatically
I have been watching this topic because it has been effecting me too. It was only effecting my internal dvd burner drive, but not my usb connected external dvd burner. I hae also exchange my internal drive with another computer's and that drive wouldn't mount either. I believe the v2.6.32 kernels contain a bug that prevent some of us from mounting cds because it has been the case with me. I tested 2 PPA kernels on Kubuntu Lucid today (fresh install for this test), creating cds and they worked as they should. They both allowed me to mount and dismount automatically, blank, burn iso's and data cds, and browse cds without problems. They are working fine with K3B, Dolphin, and the Device Notifier widget. I also rebooted several times to see if I would make the problem reappear, but it hasn't. Kernels that won't mount my cd drive properly: linux-image-generic-2.6.32.21.22 linux-image-generic-2.6.32.22.23 Working Kernels: linux-image-2.6.33-02063301-generic_2.6.33-02063301_i386 (v2.6.33.1-lucid) linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386 (v2.6.34-lucid) They can be found here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ Possible solution: I think we should move on to the v2.6.33 or greater kernels for Lucid. [Bug 574241] [NEW] cdrom randomly fails to mount in Lucid

I'm currently using Kubuntu Lucid, but I can confirm this occurs with Ubuntu Lucid. I purchased a USB external cd burner as a temporary solution and it appears to be uneffected by any symptom, so this might only apply to internal cd drives. [Bug 399016] Re: kanjisaver does not appear as a screen saver in KDE4.2
I would like to add that I can get kanjisaver to work 'as a screensaver' in KDE4xx but only if I replace kblankscrn.kss with kanjisaver.kss, after making a backup of the original kblankscrn.kss. They are located in the /usr/bin directory. For some reason, unknown to me, kanjisaver is not recognized as a screensaver but will work if it pretends to be the 'blank screen' screensaver (or possibly others). *Fixed* I downloaded and burned a copy of ubuntu desktop daily build (lucid- desktop-i386.iso 28-Feb-2010) and it works as expected. The splash screen works (including plymouth), my monitor doesn't turn off anymore, and I am able to run a live session and or install ubuntu, either from the initial boot menu or from the live desktop. [Bug 529563] [NEW] Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau Hello, Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 Live CD. The problem I am having is the live cd will only get as far as the cd's boot menu, and when I select either install or live cd, something shuts off my monitor and the power button blinks (no output to monitor I think). I tried this several times without setting special boot options, and several times with random boot options but I still can't get it too keep power to my monitor. This also happens with the check cd for errors option. Being that I have no display afterwards and the live cd is session only I have no log files or error messages to look at. If it is not the Nouveau drivers, then it might be ubiquity or xorg crashing my display. It is not a problem with my monitor, because I am running Lucid alpha3 as we speak. Also, virtualbox ose in Karmic had no problem running the iso image of Lucid-alpha3. I md5'ed the iso and it checks out fine. The problem is only booting the cd from my PC. Another observation is the lack of display does not prevent Lucid Alpha 3 live cd from booting into a live session, because after 5 minutes or more I can here the ubuntu login sound eventually. I finally managed to get alpha 3 installed on my computer, but to do that I had to perform the upgrade (update-manager -d) over my 9.10 installation. I couldn't use a free partition like I was hoping. Prior to the Karmic to Lucid upgrade, I installed the proprietary Nvidia graphics card driver to ensure I had working drivers after the upgrade. I believe the driver series was 185. This driver does not show up in the window of the hardware manager in Lucid alpha3. Instead, it shows I have two of them activated, but not currently in use. The names of them are version current and nVida/Riva/TNT/GeForce. My graphics card is a MSI branded Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS PCI Express x16. [Bug 529563] Re: Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.
Hello I have tried the actual alpha3 desktop cd and the ubuntu desktop daily build (I think dated 26-Feb-2010). Neither worked for me. I will try the 28-Feb-2010 daily build tonight to see if it has improved. The only way I can install Lucid is by upgrading from Karmic. I haven't tried the alt cd yet, which I suppose I should also try. What happens with the live cd is, when I boot into the live cd, I see the splash screen appear as normal, and then finally the menu which gives me the choices of what to do. After I select my language (english), I go to select one of the options (try this without making any changes..., install ubuntu, etc) then when it starts to load the desktop or ubiquity, immediately my monitor powers off. After the monitor powers off, which doesn't allow me to turn back on while the live cd is running, I can see my cpu is still loading the live cd because of the cpu indicator light is still going strong. I can even hear the ubuntu login sound if I turn my speakers up high enough if I tried to start a live session. It is like the live cd is disabling my graphics card. I have no output on the screen at all, it is just black with no sign of light behind it, and the monitor's power button blinks continuously. It blinks the same way when I shut off my computer and forget to turn off the monitor. uname -a on the command line of the live cd causes the live cd to exit and boot my installed Lucid. uname -a in this installed version says: ja...@james-karmic:~$ uname -a Linux James-Karmic 2.6.32-14-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Sat Feb 20 05:38:50 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux (ignore the karmic machine name) Also, I had no problems at all booting from 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 and 9.10 live cds. All I need to do is copy a large file like an ISO image, or a large group of miscellaneous files in a folder, then paste the contents into another location. When the progress window opens up (the one that has the title file operations), it goes to about 90% and then crashes, and it also crashes any nautilus windows I have open. If I copy a very large amount of files (5gb or more), I can see my screen go from lite to dark several times during each transfer and the progress staggers. It appears that my files are unharmed and they actually completed every transfer every time. I can still copy and paste without crashing if the transfer size is small enough to not start the progress file operations window. Normally I don't have an indicator applet in use because I like only using a single panel. Also, I didn't have this problem in Lucid Alpha 1. If I find anything else to add, I'll be back later. [Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)
Hi Antti Kaihola, This is a clean install of Lucid Alpha 1 (i386) with no updates applied (I'm avoiding a partial upgrade) but with some various applications installed. All directory files do end in the .directory extension. However, you have helped me find the problem. On the other hand, every file in the /usr/share/applications folder does have a *.desktop extension. Whatever it is that is responsible for creating *.desktop extensions is failing to do so during ubuntu installation, and while using apt-get. I used command line apt-get to install my favorite applications from the ubuntu repositories. I have a few applications listed there that I have installed using another method... sh GoogleEarthLinux.run for example. So it looks like I will have to rename each file (application entry) in the ls /home/james/.local/share/applications directory to .desktop if I want to edit them in alacarte. [Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)
I managed to fix it. I downloaded a new alacarte source package and compiled the source code myself. I can now edit any menu entry in alacarte. If anyone needs to fix alacarte in Ubuntu Lucid (alpha 1) (gnome- desktop), because you are unable to edit the entries in the gnome menu, see below. I got alacarte from gnome 2.29.4 - alacarte version 0.12.4 found here: http://www.icewalkers.com/download/GNOME/1075/dld/ I think the dependencies were intltool and libgnome-menu-dev (when you run ./configure it will tell you) ./configure make sudo make install you might need to reboot the system, if not log out and back in again. Also, I was advised that *.desktop files are not present in the ~/.local/share/applications folder by default, so I am mistaken about that part in my earlier post. Probable Bug Solution: I think alacarte needs to be recompiled for i386 desktop (Lucid alpha 1) before alpha 2 is released.
