The problem appears to be in /usr/share/pyshared/UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py: There are four occurrences of an odd 'upd!te'. I replaced them with the more natural 'update' and the installation error is no longer reproducible. The following comment appears towards the top of UpdateManager.py:

Following comment #4 above... just re-installed successfully through Synaptic: Preconfiguring packages ... (Reading database ... 137879 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace nvidia-common 0.2.15.1 (using .../nvidia-common_0.2.15.1_i386.deb) ... Unpacking replacement
