[Bug 732653] Re: Menus are hidden by default
Personally am not bothered by this issue. Once I figured out about it (I read the review) it was easy to adapt. However I am system administrator for a university that runs completely on ubuntu. We are currently on ubuntu 10.04 on all our administrative desktops (over 800) and I have been looking to upgrading to unity. Most of our users come from windows but have adapted quite easily to ubuntu (gnome2) While I think many of our users and student should figure out unity quite easily. This whole autohide menu thing is just a bummer. We have people who rely heavily on office and use firefox alot (among other tools) not being able to figure out the menu is just a nightmere I can't even begin to imagine. offering training would be a drain on resources as we get visiting faculties on a weekly basis and we just dont have the support staff to hand it. Ubuntu is aiming for the enterprise desktop.. but my verdict from all I have seen so far is that it has really failed. I can not consider ubuntu for our upgrade. might just be safer to go MINT MATE. That might be the safest option for us. really sad -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/732653 Title: Menus are hidden by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/732653/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1050243] [NEW] unable to retype login details on lightdm with userlist disabled
Public bug reported: Its impossible to retype the login details if a mistake during login on lightdm with userlist disabled. I noticed this problem on Xubuntu 12.04. This bug can be reproduced always. I noticed it while trying to setup a laptop image for my institute. We disabled the userlist for lightdm for security purpose so that users would have to manually type in their username. I noticed that if I made a mistake while typing the user credentials (whether in the password or username) the lightdm gives me the username/password incorrect error but it does not provide me the username dialog box so that I can start all over again. What I get instead is a message that asks me to retype the password (which should not be the case because sometimes the mistake was in the username not the password) When this happens the best way to login is either to switch to console mode and restart lightdm, or to reboot the computer completely. I think this is a major bug which will affect many people who use Ubuntu (or in my case xubuntu) in enterprise. [Bug 1050243] Re: unable to retype login details on lightdm with userlist disabled
Just want to add that if I typed the right username and only make a mistake in typing the password. The lightdm greeter gives an incorrect password message and continues to give this error until the right password is given. I think this is a serious security flaw. A username should be part of the security of a user, hence it is not ideal for the login manager to give any intruder an idea that the right username has been entered. The normal way is to give a username or password may be incorrect error message and then reset the login screen to allow the user re-enter the login details. I have added an image to better explain the issue ** Attachment added: screenshot https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1050243/+attachment/3311940/+files/IMG_20120913_084825.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1050243 Title: unable to retype login details on lightdm with userlist disabled To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1050243/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 776224] Re: system-config-printer-kde tool won't start on Kubuntu 11.04
This sucks honestly it sucks. Its about over a week now since I filed this bug not a comment. not a word from anyone. (invalid, incomplete, comfirmed, anything) if this was the first time I would be filing a bug on Kubuntu and it would would just be left hanging as to its status it would not be this sad and frustrating. But if someone blogs about how sucky things are with Kubuntu he would seem to get more attention with everyone asking why he did not file a bug.. I was directed here from IRC, I did what I could. as frustrating as this can be (I use my computer for work) I did not complain I filed a bug added as many information as I could, and At least one person confirmed it on his system (to show am not insane!!!) Right now I had to resort to using the web frontend for cups which is very limited. what else am I to do? I am at the office now just tiring my head out on how to rename a printer something I can quite figure out to do with the web front-end for cups. I guess this is the price of free software, but really it should not be this way. Bugs happens in every software. Its how we react to it that matters. My know how is limited. But I know there are people who are smarter than me who sees this issue and turn the other cheek. @Christian Mangold I don't know the type of configuration u have on your system, but after seeing your comment, I decided to do a fresh install of Kubuntu 11.04 on another machine. Updated it to the latest packages and the only thing I installed was akonadi-kde-google-resource. even there I could not get it to work. It gave me invalid password. I tried again on virtualbox in livecd enviroment, and even there still couldn't get it to work. Maybe you should try this on a fresh install on virtualbox or something. In any case marking this bug is far from being fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/727487 Title: akonadi libgcal and googledata -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 727487] Re: akonadi libgcal and googledata
@Scott I don't know if you saw message about doing two fresh install (one on a completely different machine, and one on a virtualbox instance from livecd environment) and on both instance I am getting invalid password. Unless u are suggesting that for some reason I might have miss typed my password or something. Which is not so because I even typed my password on a Kate. Copied and pasted it on kopete and was signed in to gtalk. Did same for akonadi Google resource and same password for same username that worked with gmail and gtalk was said to be invalid on akonadi google resource. I would ask anyone to try this package on a freshly installed final release of kubuntu 11.04 and see if it works before marking this as fixed. Building the package from source use to work on kubuntu 11.04 beta 2 but when I did a clean install of the final release even that stopped working. In anycase I shouldn't have to build from source. The default package in the repo should work. It didn't hence this bug is not fixed! [Bug 769820] Re: akonadi-kde-resource-googledata always says invalid password unable to add google contact and calendar
I think the problem here is that of packaging, something is broken in the way akonadi-googledata and libgcal is packaged on Kubuntu Natty. I recompiled both pacakges from source doing the following first remove your current akonadi gcal resource entry (if you still have one) in the akonadi system settings module. then open a konsole and: ~$ sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) ~$ mkdir builds ~$ cd builds ~/builds$ apt-get source libgcal ~/builds$ sudo apt-get build-dep libgcal ~/builds$ apt-get source akonadi-googledata ~/builds$ sudo apt-get build-dep akonadi-googledata ~/builds$ cd libgcal-0.9.6 ~/builds/libgcal-0.9.6$ ./configure ~/builds/libgcal-0.9.6$ make ~/builds/libgcal-0.9.6$ sudo make install ~/builds/libgcal-0.9.6$ cd .. ~/builds$ cd akonadi-googledata-1.2.0 ~/builds/akonadi-googledata-1.2.0$ mkdir builds ~/builds/akonadi-googledata-1.2.0$ cd builds ~/builds/akonadi-googledata-1.2.0/builds$ cmake .. ~/builds/akonadi-googledata-1.2.0/builds$ make ~/builds/akonadi-googledata-1.2.0/builds$ sudo make install and when I rebooted the invalid password issue were gone and syncing is possible again. Its been close to 2 weeks since I reported this bug. The least that could have been done is at least someone acknowledges it. I have had to reinstall my system (clean install) from scratch because of this problem to see if something was messed up with my setup. when the problem persist I decided to find time to report a bug. Reporting bugs, trying to get as much infr I can about the problem is really not a particular past-time of mine. And when I find time to report one the least I would like to get is at least someone acknowledges it. Can it be reproduced on their system? do you want for info on the issue? something. I even had to google and tracked down the maintainer of plasma-widget-menubar and directed him to this report. he said he would look into it and get back to me. Up till now nothing. If I were to go to reddit or blog and rant about how messed up Kubuntu is and how buggy and unstable it has been for me,. I would have gotten more Attention. @Daniel the issue here is not about generic http proxy. it concern specific apt proxy called apt-cacher. which is a server that intercepts apt requests and downloads them to a cache so that anyone within the lan who needs such packages would not need to download it from the internet. All I have to do is add the proxy detail to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/01proxy synaptic package manager also supports it under settings/preference/networking kpackagekit does not have support for it at all and its a very big deal breaker for many within large organisations who use Kubuntu. -- [Maverick] kpackagekit won't honor apt proxy setings https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/633008 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 582809] Re: Synaptics Clickpad touchpad buttons are not working
I have applied paul's patch and now I am able to right click and middle click. even then the experience is not great at all and its mostly a hit and miss thing. Right click can be a pain most times I have to initiate the action like 3 times before it registers if the mouse doesn't jump around, it would open the context menu initiated by the right click and the context menu closes almost immediately. I have to continue the right click action before I get it right. Same thing for middle click. Most times middle clicking also initiate left click actions, like if I try to open a link as tab with middle click the link gets open as tab and also because left click action is taken the link also gets open within the current page am viewing. [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close
@Mark You honestly feel that this change of windows button to the left is best for Ubuntu? And the best time to make such change is in an LTS? Personally I am less concerned about the windows way or the apple way but rather that whatever usability decision the design team make should have usability impact on the users. Left for me There are many things that needs fixing on the Ubuntu desktop usability wise and windows button are just not one of them. But that is just me. The way I see this not one person had complained or felt that they was a problem with the window button being on the right. Even the people who claim to prefer it on the left or adjust to it that way many of them never had a problem with it being on the right. All I can say is that it would be nice if things like usability and design should be open more to the community. Canonical always have their veto but at least the community would have a sense of participation. One thing I would love to hear is how the design team hopes to get round issues of breaking consistency with the rest of the Linux desktop. That is a issue that would need to be addressed. Many people on Ubuntu would be using emerald compiz window decorator will that be patched too to respect this new window button replacement?. others would be using openbox. some of us also have kde installed on our system. How is the design team going to get round the issue of consistency which if not sorted would lead to bigger usability issues than was created by the window buttons being on the right. Also would this window button redesign be implemented in other ubuntu variants like kubuntu, Xubuntu, lubuntu? Because if design team is telling us that this change is in fact the best thing then surely there wouldn't wont to exclude ubuntu variant from the best usability experience. Maybe there should be a check button that asks the user way he would like his windows button placed. (but that too would add more level of complexity to the install process and make it less human friendly) Personally as a sysadmin in charge of a university where Ubuntu is used solely by all our staffs, students, and faculties. This change should never have come in an LTS release (if it most be made at all) and in my humble opinion is just a solution looking for a problem. It doesn't in anyway increase my workflow or that of my users and having to resort to gconf command or installing extra ppa everytime I install ubuntu for my users (and I do that alot) is not something am looking forward to. But then maybe am not as long sighted as Mark. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close
@ Mark Shuttleworth I think what @Pablo Quirós meant was that the aim of design and usability is to make the life of the user easier, to improve their workflow hence their productivity. If the design fails to achieve this (and only the user can tell) then that design has failed and reason be restored. Yes, design is a democracy in the sense that users vote with their feet they choose the products that work well for them. If we fail badly with this, or any other piece, they will go somewhere else, and we lose Are you saying that those who think that the new design of windows button placement does not suit them, should take a walk and find another distro? You might ask how can we know if users are happy with this design choice without first trying it and see from their feedbacks if it helped make their lives easier? True but you really don't want to perform such a test on an LTS which is the version of Ubuntu that is adopted by enterprise users. Even though I feel this change is a solution looking for a problem. Still I am not against giving it a try in one of the in between LTS releases and using the feedback generated as input on whether such a move would benefit the user or not. Look, I understand this is risky. In my judgment, it's worth the risk. Serious Mark you really think making this risky decisions for an LTS release is worth it? seriously? Being able to tackle risky things is one of the things that gives us the chance to catch up to the big guys, and beat them. One way to catch the big boys is ask what their secret is. and one of it is consistency. Windows as pretty much maintained the same look since windows 95, they just added more polish and more superlatives but its essentially the same start-menu, windows management buttons, the same task-manager hence a user knows what to expect from a newer version of windows. This is one of the reason why windows is very popular many people know what to expect and how to find their way around. Even with all its flaws Microsoft or Apple wont wake up one morning and decide their were going to change the location of their window button placement its just not something you want to do for a serious OS. You dont experiment too much with a serious OS. look at redhat or Sled the big players in the linux desktop They don't experiment with their users. They try to keep things consistent I am not saying Ubuntu should be that conservative or enterprise focussed, we can always maintain a balance.. keep the desktop consistent and the underthehood stuffs should do the magic design thats and design and usability decisions should really improve the usability and workflow of users. and not force them to have to relearn how to use their desktop. Consistency is the biggest problem of free desktop we always move the post to many times. Whatever decision the usability team makes the deciding factor is how the user reacts to its, whether its makes their usage of ubuntu easier or adds to their problem. You raised the issue of the Kernel team (among other teams) If they make a radical change to the Ubuntu kernel which impacts negatively on the user. You would get the same backlash you are getting now. The reason why people are not poking too much into their business is because for most they are doing their work fine. Ubuntu and the development process is (or should be) actually democratic if not in voting but in checks and balancing. The usability team come up with a design. If it doesn't work for the user they would receive a backlash (such as this) hence the community is a check to bring the design team back down to earth (no pun intended) and to face the reality of everyday computer usage something which is quite beyond the drawing board. I am not against taking risk or trying something new. I just feel for an LTS things should be kept quite conservative. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This Bug is a shame. This issue was first reported on hardy heron when it caused many problems for people who select Nigeria as their location, Things like printer-config-settings, alacarte, and even problems with 3rd party applications like Elisa etc. The main cause of this error is due to the locale set during Ubuntu installation (Nigeria, en_NG). [Bug 463716] Re: Cannot use more than one sound device at a time
First of this is not just a problem with MPD. I used MPD in my example because its what i use for music. But I get the problem with VLC, flash video, amarok skype. My sound works on a first come first serve basis. Hence the first device to use sound use it exclusive of any other device (even the system sound) I am watching a video with VLC no other application would be able to play sound. Amarok, flash video, Skype call, even MPD none would work. anyway I decided to paste the way sound is configured on mpd audio_output { typealsa nameMy ALSA Device device hw:0,0# optional format 44100:16:2# optional mixer_devicedefault # optional mixer_control PCM # optional mixer_index 0 # optional and attached is a screenshot of my KDE System Settings Multimedia ** Attachment added: multimedia.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34754023/multimedia.png -- Cannot use more than one sound device at a time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463716 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ok so it turned out this is not an alsa or kubuntu bug as i first thought, it was infact a problem with the way mpd was configured. As I was informed in the kubuntu irc my mpd.conf should have been set to default instead of hw:0,0 .. correcting this solved the problem i was having. Thanks guys and sorry for all the stressed i caused. [Bug 463716] [NEW] Cannot use more than one sound device at a time
Public bug reported: Am on Kubuntu Karmic and am unable to use more than one sound device at a time. For example If am playing music via MPD no other sound device would work (amarok, vlc, skype, flash video etc) I will have to stop the current sound application before am able to use another. (And when i say stop I mean complete quit it not just pulse or stop) If am listening to music and I want to make a skype call. I would have to quite the music application otherwise the skype call will not go through. And during the call I will be unable to use any sound device. [Bug 447844] Re: kubuntu Karmic can't output sound at the same time
am just a normal user and I don't have a PhD in sound systems. I just don't want to spend a huge part of my life fixing audio problems. I spent a greater part of Monday trying mpd from different sources (compile from source, installed from debian, jaunty) thinking the poor application was responsible when i noticed it wont play sound. Then i removed amarok when that too wont play sound. Then i spent hours juggling vlc configurations when it wont play sound. I downgraded Skype to the jaunty version when that too wont work. It wasn't until i noticed the issue and made the connection. Only one audio application can be used at a time. And if am running mpd No other audio device (vlc, skype, amarok etc ) would work. This bug is a huge regression and Its a shame its marked as undecided. If canonical are not serious about Kubuntu maybe there should just safe us the hassle and call it quite on the project. Bluetooth has been broken since Intrepid, Jaunty shipped with a borked wireless manager, and now kubuntu karmic sound is broken less than 24 hours to release. -- kubuntu Karmic can't output sound at the same time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Mike Hancock I can confirm that its almost impossible to get the internal mic working on the dell m1330 xps with the vanilla install of ubuntu 9.04. However if you use the custom dell image of jaunty which can be downloaded here http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_9.04 its what i use and the internal mic works out of the box even with skype i didn't have to do any further configuration. perhaps you should try it. [Bug 275998] Re: internal mic capture very low volume when routed through pulseaudio
@talent03 Nope afaik there is was no custom package or patch from dell on their custom image. the dell ppa repo for jaunty had no package the time i checked. according to the dell ubuntu wiki page * Additional audio mixer volumes will be set to default at 100% (such as Front or PCM). Main will still be at 80%. Lots of Dell laptops audio is improved by this, and now the full range of audio is controllable by the hotkeys. http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_9.04#Dell_OS_Factory_Recovery_9.04_DVD_ISO hence i feel what they did was set adjust the settings of alsamixer to something that works best on dell laptops The problem of pulse as always been settings I now use kubuntu 9.04 with kde 4.3 and i can confirm that i use my internal mic with little hassle i can even make skype calls -- internal mic capture very low volume when routed through pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275998 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
