Why would rpm based system work but Debian does not?

Nautilus (gnome-vfs2 apps eg eog picasa also) disconnects ncpfs shares on
access of files.
Using gthumb does not disconnect the shares.
Disconnection is sometime intermittent but always after one or more file
accesses.
It seems to be mostly image files causing this
