[Bug 2058053] Re: Change sudo compile options from --with-all-insults to --with-pc-insults

2024-03-18 Thread dh
Yep, we can close this, my mistake.
I was thrown off but he fact that the brains one was previously gated by PC
insults, but is included despite default to PC since
https://www.sudo.ws/repos/sudo/rev/eb264d342601 .
Nothing to see here, move along :)

Re: [Bug 2058053] Re: Change sudo compile options from --with-all-insults to --with-pc-insults

2024-03-15 Thread dh
I may have put 2+2 together and made 5 here then. Pulling strings from the
library i could see one of the insults that i thought was only included
inside the elseif statement for PC being set. I'll double check as i may
have been looking at an old git revision, or perhaps there was a config
option i overlooked for offensive vs tame insults which left it included in
the library

[Bug 2058053] [NEW] Change sudo compile options from --with-all-insults to --with-pc-insults

2024-03-15 Thread dh
Public bug reported:

Tame as they might be, I'd like to continue using "Defaults insults" without
any risk of upsetting anyone (and without having to maintain our own package
version.)
Would the safe insults version at compile time "--with-pc-insults" be a
sensible default for all?

Current as of Jammy, but looks like it's still the default compile option
across the board
Version: 1.9.9-1ubuntu2

Current behaviour : Enabling includes the "not PC" insults
Expected behaviour : Insults would default to "PC"

2019-04-10 Thread dh
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1663645 ***

Observations so far (this has affected me for some time).

Models of Dell 3430 with NVMe SSDs factory installed consistently do this.
(They shipped with KXG60ZNV512G NVMe TOSHIBA 512GB )

With non factory SSDs Intel 760p 512GB in our test cases (this doesn't occur).

[Bug 1790454] Re: Bluetooth (btintel) stops working after suspend/resume

2018-12-21 Thread DH
I am having a similar issue with Intel 8260. Wifi and BT works correctly
after cold boot. Wifi works correctly after suspend, but BT was showing
no adapters available in KDE plasma widget. dmesg would report "[
150.064149] Bluetooth: hci0: Failed to send firmware data (-38)" after
each resume.

My 8260 was not listed in lsusb, but is listed in lspci.

Fix in #47 did not work for me. However, adding a systemd service to
rmmod and modprobe btusb after each resume seems to have the BT adapter
working correctly now.

2017-06-30 Thread dh
Dell XPS owner, I would also suggest you hassle Dell.. selling a laptop
with Ubuntu installed, where one of the devices doesn't even work properly
is a bit of a d1ck move. I've reported the issue with them which they
promised would be relayed to their hw team. More reports can't hurt!
Not that it helps but the card swap I mentioned earlier was effective
(better range, throughput and speed reporting now correct (I failed to
gather useful data for comparison before the card swap though).

another laptop I have with intel wireless during side by side test. I'm
receiving an intel AC 8265 (Model 8265NGW) in the coming days to do a
comparison in the same chassis for a fair test (in case of antenna
performance issues).

[Bug 1648926] [NEW] Onboard keyboard displayed out of viewport on unity-greeter

2016-12-09 Thread DH
Public bug reported:

On a fresh boot, greeter seems to go through an apparent resolution-
change within .5 seconds of first being displayed. Then, onboard on
screen keyboard seems to be displayed mostly off the screen. What I see
is a black bar covering the bottom ~100px of the screen if onboard is
selected from the accessibility menu. If onboard is deselected, the
black bar goes away. In either case, onboard is unusable for login.

Device is a Lenovo Miix 700, resolution 2160 x 1440, 12 inch physical.
Detected correctly with the correct resolution in "Displays" and xrandr
after login.

[Bug 1648925] [NEW] Accessibility menu not shown on lockscreen

2016-12-09 Thread DH
Public bug reported:

First off, I do not know for sure if this bug should be filed against
"unity-greeter" package, so some guidance from someone more in the know
would be appreciated.

When I choose to lock my session, there is no "accessibility menu" (icon
of person-figure in a circle) in the upper panel, like there is on the
login screen that shows on a fresh boot. This means that I cannot
manually turn on the onboard on-screen keyboard using only the
touchscreen. This in turn means that I cannot log in without re-docking
to my 2-in-1's keyboard.

[Bug 989419] Re: Onboard not shown on login screen automatically on a device with no keyboard

2016-12-09 Thread DH
Lenovo Miix 700, relatively stock Ubuntu 16.04 install.

Expected behaviors:
1. Some button or menu to manually call up an onboard keyboard. and/or
2. Onboard comes into view automatically, even before any taps or selections by
user

Actual behavior:
1. No menu item that I can find in greeter to start the onboard
2. Onboard not automatically shown

It is possible that onboard is trying to be shown on my install, but is
outside of the viewable area. I say this because greeter goes through an
apparent resolution change in the first .5 second of being displayed,
and there is a dark bar at the bottom of the screen. This may be a
separate bug, in which case I will split it out to a new one. However, I
suspect this may be affecting users with 2-in-1's with very hiDPI
screens such as mine.

[Bug 1647199] Re: ELAN touchpad acts as generic mouse after firmware update

2016-12-04 Thread DH
Also, I tried about every combination of i8042.reset, i8042.kbdreset=1,
i8042.nopnp, i8042.noloop boot parameters I could think of, no change.

Tried alternate versions of psmouse, such as psmouse-alps, psmouse-
elantech-x551c, etc from various forums, no change.

I should be back to the stock psmouse module at this time.

2014-07-31 Thread dh
Any further detail I can add here to move this along? Trying to work out
the most elegant workaround in the mean time whilst the pam module is
still apparently not functioning as intended.

According to the man page for the current pam_motd (included in libpam-modules
Version: 1.1.8-1ubuntu2
 ), it's still reading from /etc/motd

[Bug 1123097] [NEW] Nouveau advertises HDMI audio capability over minidisplayport and mini dvi connectors

2013-02-12 Thread dh
Public bug reported:

After updating to Quantal (worked fine in Precise and previous
revisions), My TV is being fooled into thinking that an audio signal is
being carried from the HDMI input (not possible as using a DVI-HDMI
cable). As a result, the TV looks for HDMI audio and ignores the
analogue input TV analogue input making it impossible to get audio to
the TV.

I believe this relates to recent changes in nouveau.
Using nouveau.hdmi_disable parameter fixes the audio issue but limits the
resolution I can use. It seems some of this behaviour is addressed by EDID
quirks (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=806091 , and
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/1309291/) which allow for selectively
disabling the HDMI audio component in nouveau. but I don't think they are
implemented yet in Quantal kernel?

Hardware us Mac mini 3,1. Same behaviour occurs using mini DP or mini DVI
connector.
TV is an LG 32LE5900, The same is probably true of all LE5900s.

[Bug 867869] Re: brcmsmac wireless driver does not have power management enabled and is eating batteries

2012-06-15 Thread DH
I am seeing as much as 5W reported by powertop for just the brcmsmac
device line, with just light web browsing in firefox in decent signal
wifi. Cannot set power saving mode on BCM43225.

I may try to go back to proprietary broadcom-sta drivers if it keeps
eating my battery like this. I used to be able to pull 6+ hours out of
my acer 3820t, now I'm lucky to make 3 under Precise...

[Bug 834037] Re: Huge power regression in kernel 3.x on Sandy Bridge laptops

2011-08-31 Thread DH
Same issue here on Acer 3820t with Core i3-350m. Kernel rescheduling
ticks account for 400-1000 wakeups per second at idle under Bodhi Linux
1.1 (Ubuntu Lucid base) with 3.0.0.7 and 3.0.0.8. Worst I had ever seen
previously was around 300-400 per second under 2.6.34.x I think it was.
2.6.38.x usually nets 10-50 or so.

Forgot to add that my command line arguments have been set by grub to
include acpi_osi=Linux i8042.reset=1 for all of the above kernel

[Bug 626967] Re: MASTER: Hang in MI_WAIT_FOR_EVENT on framebuffer switch.

2010-12-10 Thread DH
I tested xserver-xorg-video-intel versions 2:2.12.0-ubuntu5.1 and ubuntu5.2~lp
from Robert Hooker for about three days under the following conditions /
environments:
- Acer 3820T with Core i3-350m and integrated graphics only
- Completely updated Ubuntu Maverick
- Kernels 2.6.35, 2.6.36-2 and 2.6.37-8
- Multiple shutdowns, suspend/resume, and hibernate/resume cycles in each
- Xfce and Enlightenment 17 DEs
- Multi-display setup on laptop LVDS with or without HDMI out

I saw zero apport crashes, no compositor issues, no MI_WAIT_FOR_EVENT
errors logged, and similar power usage/wakeups/interrupt counts.

[Bug 671214] Re: dpkg fails to install acpi-support 0.137

2010-11-07 Thread DH
'status acpid' returns 'acpid start/spawned, process 1245' during the
dpkg -i hang. The output of status changes to 'stop/spawned' if 'sudo
stop -v acpid' is issued in another shell, even though the stop command
never exits and gives no output. Ctrl-c cancelling the stop command and
issuing a sudo start -v acpid will also change the output of status back
to start/spawned. Start also hangs/no exit with no output. Also, issuing
two sudo start -v acpid in a row gives 'start: Job is already running:
acpid' Two stop commands in a row gives 'stop: Job has already been
stopped: acpid'

Let me know what else you need to t/s this...

[Bug 671214] [NEW] dpkg fails to install acpi-support 0.137

2010-11-04 Thread DH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

Ubuntu Maverick version of acpi-support was replaced with Debian sid by
accident on my machine. Successfully manually removed apci-support acpi-
support-base and acpi-fakekey using dpkg -P --force-all name . Now,
trying to revert to Maverick version in apt cache or manually downloaded
from us.archive.ubuntu.com pool results in dpkg hanging:

$sudo dpkg -i --force-all acpi-support_0.137_amd64.deb
(Reading database ... 192568 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace acpi-support 0.137 (using acpi-support_0.137_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement acpi-support ...
Setting up acpi-support (0.137) ...

It will stay hanging on that line all night, dpkg process shows no cpu /
cputime activity in top 1GB free ram and .5 loadavg:

9303 root 20 0 77516 57m 1120 S0 1.6 0:00.48 dpkg

Until I ctrl-c out of it.

Setting dpkg --debug=72700 it appears to hang on one of two lines with
equal probability:

D000200: conffderef in='/etc/acpi/events/sony-eject' current
working='/etc/acpi/events/sony-eject'

or

D000200: conffderef in='/etc/acpi/sonybright.sh' current
working='/etc/acpi/sonybright.sh'

so I tried to remove acpi-support again:

---
 $ sudo dpkg -P --force-all acpi-support
(Reading database ... 192556 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing acpi-support ...
Purging configuration files for acpi-support ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Processing triggers for ureadahead ...
-

Which changes the failure step lines to 100% of the time:

---
Configuration file `/etc/init.d/acpi-support', does not exist on system.
Installing new config file as you requested.

--
/etc/init.d/acpi-support is correctly removed / deleted by dpkg each time -P is
used...

[Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled

2010-10-12 Thread DH
I am seeing similar results as Elias Julkunen with 2.6.26-rc7 kernel
from mainline kernels. My system is an Acer 3820T-5246 with Core i3-350M
(no GPU). Kernel scheduler Load balancing ticks have dropped from about
120-230 on 2.6.35.x to a range of about 11 to 28. Even with the added
wakeups from kworker/0:0, /0:1, and Rescheduler interrupts, total system
wakeups are down by a factor of 2 to 3. ACPI power estimates are also
down from ~16W to ~12W with a similarly loaded system.

Also seeing a side bonus in stability when switching multiple screen
outputs, and input lag is still present but probably improved by 60% or
so. So, all in all I recommend anyone worried about wakeups try 2.6.36
at your earliest convenience.

[Bug 496665] Re: Visor module resets Treo 680

2010-08-12 Thread DH
I kind of have to agree with Myk with this in principle. It's still a
problem for me as well. But with no syncing in Linux I switched to a
Blackberry. The only reason I still used my Treo was that it synced in
Linux, so it was either switch distros back to Fedora or dump the Treo.
So now I'm left to running a WIndows VM just to sync my Blackberry.

[Bug 159031] Re: computer freezes when sshfs blocks waiting for connection

2010-02-21 Thread DH
I get this same behaviour when I mount a samba share and then the samba
shared computer gets turned off. Nautilus becomes completely
unresponsive. Any windows that were open are frozen and any new windows
will not open until the samba server is turned back on.

[Bug 352732] Re: [jaunty] Sound muted after boot

2009-10-28 Thread DH
I was able to solve this issue on karmic beta via other means...

I found a K50alsa-utils symlink to /etc/init.d/alsa-utils in /etc/rc0.d/
and /etc/rc6.d/ . Once I redirected those symlinks to an empty file, my
sound settings are correctly restored throughout the boot and login
process.

Not sure how those rc*.d symlinks got created in my karmic install...
isnt rc*.d a kde thing? If so, it was probably when I installed
amarok14, amarok 2.2, or amarok-nightly and its dependencies.

HTH, I struggled with this throughout my use of Jaunty, but its fixed
permanently now.

[Bug 410468] Re: grub.cfg generated initrd intead of init= in karmic

2009-10-06 Thread dh
The only way I was able to boot was effectively changing the init line,
but this was only because my syntax was wrong and the system would only
boot without initrd loading. I've reinstalled and it's resolved, but I
have no idea what was wrong with my grub entries or initrd.

[Bug 410468] [NEW] grub.cfg generated initrd intead of init= in karmic

2009-08-07 Thread dh
Public bug reported:

Upgraded to grub2 in jaunty without problems, then upgraded to karmic and
grub.cfg was not a bootable config
In order to boot now I've had to:
uncomment the line GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true in /etc/default/grub
this may be because of bug 392836 or 406774
I also have to edit the line
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-5-generic
to init= /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-5-generic
by hitting e when grub displays the menu, and ctrl-x to boot

[Bug 331092] Re: iwlagn driver fails to find 5GHz draft-N access point with CONFIG_WIRELESS_OLD_REGULATORY=n for all intel wireless cards

2009-03-02 Thread dh
So how does one set the regulatory domain without iw (which isn't
packaged in ubuntu repos) or wpa_supplicant, which is a version behind
that which is needed for this functionality (needs 0.6.7)?

2009-02-27 Thread dh
CONFIG_WIRELESS_OLD_REGULATORY=y (no CRDA) Thanks Alson, that is
exactly the kernel config change I was referring to. It seems that this
and therefore the CRDA stuff has been implemented before a method of
switching domains has been implemented to support this change!

[Bug 288401] Re: iwl3945 driver doesn't see !US wireless channels on UK laptop [intrepid regression]

2009-02-25 Thread dh
A kernel config option for cfg80211 has changed in one of the recent
Jaunty alpha kernel or module releases which disabled the legacy
options cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=EU method. Now that the CRDA method
is in place there is no way of passing the region to the module without
a git version of wpa_supplicant or a recent iw which is not yet packaged
for debian/ubuntu (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321630) as far as I
can tell. Compiling iw from http://wireless.kernel.org/download/iw/
works to set the parameter per session, but a way of setting this
persistently or via the timezone and with actual ubuntu packages would
be nice!

Most of the info regarding the new behaviour is at:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/developers/Regulatory/CRDA and
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Documentation/iw has info regarding
the iw tool I used to get my channel 13 back!

[Bug 104432] Re: Glipper makes copy/pasting of images in OpenOffice impossible

2009-01-13 Thread DH
Thanks. You need parcellite 0.9 though, because otherwise the clipboard
contents still disappear when you close an application. It's still at 0.7 in
the repositories.
http://parcellite.sourceforge.net

To compile 0.9 you'll need at least build-tools, intltool, and libgtk2.0-dev.
Then run:
./compile
make
sudo make install

like usual

Clipboard finally works like it should.

switch to use the new java plugin. Or you can switch to use it now with

[Bug 288088] Re: system fails resume after suspend on nx6125: LNXPOWER:00 failed to thaw - error -8

2008-11-24 Thread dh
Confirm suffering same issue with same hardware (HP nx6125). Would be
very nice to fix this regression, Intrepid has otherwise brought some
great improvements to this hardware (like the open source aiglx support)
so seems a shame to loose the suspend feature. I'm also happy to test
any patches or provide any feedback.

[Bug 291135] [NEW] Out of date java 6 plugin installed

2008-10-30 Thread DH
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Intrepid has support for the latest version of java (version 6
update 10 build 33), but the old plugin is still enabled, not the new
one with support for draggable applets, jnlp-based applets and other new
features. These applets for example will not work: https://scenegraph-
demos.dev.java.net/demo-applets.html

To fix this I ran:
sudo update-alternatives --install
/etc/alternatives/xulrunner-1.9-javaplugin.so xulrunner-1.9-javaplugin.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 50

sudo update-alternatives --config xulrunner-1.9-javaplugin.so

But perhaps other plugin alternatives should point to the new plugin location:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so
instead of:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/l
ibjavaplugin_oji.so

That includes those listed in /usr/lib/jvm/.java-6-sun.jinfo:
xulrunner-1.9-javaplugin.so
firefox-javaplugin.so
iceape-javaplugin.so
iceweasel-javaplugin.so
mozilla-javaplugin.so
midbrowser-javaplugin.so

Hi,

Yes, I tried Ubuntu 8.04, but I had some problems with it too (sometimes
freeze, and at the login screen (1600x1200) I had another resolution than the
desktop screen(1024x768)), and I was shift to Debian 4.0.
But idependently of these bugs, I watch what happens around Ubuntu.

2008-05-30 Thread DH
Hi, at our university they are shutting off network access to computers that
aren't running at least PHP 5.2.6 because of these security holes.
I am running Ubuntu Hardy server, is there a timeline for this update to be
released to Hardy, or else is there a backport available. I can always compile
php/apache/etc. myself like in them yon olden days, but I'd prefer not to.
Thank you

[Bug 21202] Re: firefox doesn't work with gtk clipboard management

2008-05-20 Thread DH
Glipper is actually not a fix anymore, unlike what I posted earlier. It
doesn't work, and glipper has its own set of bugs (you can't copy paste
images or charts in openoffice for example):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glipper/+bug/104432
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glipper/+bug/185624

So basically copy paste between applications is broken still in Ubuntu
Hardy with no current workaround.

[Bug 228061] [NEW] Samba doesn't display the shared stuffs

2008-05-07 Thread DH
Public bug reported:

Looked at some previous bugs, but they are out-of-date so I think this
problem is the new bug.

Some sources of the bug :

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4867618
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786156
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4885560

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10, which I previously
used.

Well, simply put, in Ubuntu 7.10, you just need to open Nautilus, press
Ctrl + L, type in smb://LAN IP then ALL the shared stuffs (files,
folders...) will be displayed and ready, however, in Ubuntu 8.04, after
typing in smb://LAN IP, all you get is nothing in Nautilus. What you
have to do is to add the full name of the shared folder right after the
LAN IP to make it look like smb://LAN IP/SharedFolder.

What is annoying about this is, when you share a LAN with others, and
you frequently need to access their remote PCs but you have to ask for
the name/path of the shared files/folders in order to access.

Please get this fixed as soon as possible.
Thanks

[Bug 226905] [NEW] file save dialog doesn't pop up in Firefox 3

2008-05-05 Thread DH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Choose File - Save Page As... from Firefox 3 (Ubuntu Hardy Heron) and nothing
happens.
Click on a link to a file and no save dialog pops up.
I can't download files from my course website.

I was using the Human-Murrine theme, but switched back to the default Human
theme and rebooted and still the same problem.
The save dialog does appear in other applications like OpenOffice.

I am downloading the Epiphany web browser now to see if it works instead.

2008-03-31 Thread dh
There has been much discussion on v4l-dvb about this issue so I have
alerted them to the potential fix. I really think as a trivial patch
that this could save a lot of people a lot of headaches if it is the
root cause, so it at least warrants a revisit.

Cheers,

 Hi,

I'd agree with that, I to use a Nova T-500, you can't have a simple
issue like this in an LTS release, an LTS release is exactly what people
would choose to base a mythtv system on. I don't mind pulling changes
from v4l-dvb but I don't fancy building a new kernel to fix a simple
 issue.
