Actually I found out that the speakers muted after another reboot of the
machine.. I had to uninstall the DKMS package and reinstall it (newer
version, dkms-hda - 0.201208302203~precise1 ). Now the switching
between earphones and speakers seems to work again, I will investigate
how to reproduce
Actually I had skipped this step and I have to say my bad, because I
found out the bug seems to be solved in HDA-DKMS!
Now I plug the earphones and the speakers are properly muted. Unmuted
after unplugging. I will double check no further regression will pup up!

I tried you scenario and, as expected, AMAROK (2.3) didn't play anything
because audio was stolen by the flash player. Once I close firefox amarok wakes

uhm... same problem here too. I also bought an external mic, but this
issue is painful when you can't keep everything with you (external mics
included), e.g. in conferences...

and there's no sign of interest in fixing it.

Ps. Now kernel version is *.14 but I can't update if I want to keep my
notebook ready for debug.. how can I proceed? a new modified kernel
version could be a temporary solution, but maybe it would be better to
just have a modified module version.

I'm glad to inform you that now brightness *DO* react to brightnessup and
brightnessdown scripts (/etc/acpi/video_*
) and seems fixed. The second check was the problem, definitely =).
Also brightness gnome applet and brightness gnome control (as gnome panel
add-on) wok well.
