[Bug 1302309] [NEW] X won't start after today's update on ubuntu 14.04
Public bug reported: I'm using a Lenovo x230 laptop and have been on ubuntu 14.04 alpha/beta for last few months. Everything was fine with daily updates, till I updated today and now X won't start up. The screen just hangs on the ubuntu logo screen and sometimes gives a message waiting for network configuration or waiting for 60 more secs for network configuration. However it goes nowhere and does not give me a login screen. If I change display manager to lightdm, I get a login screen but nothing happens post login - just the wallpaper n mouse pointer. I've checked and I do have network connectivity from the terminal (ctrl-alt-f1). I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling xserver-xorg and then doing a dpkg- reconfigure xserver-xorg but didn't help. Booting in fail safe graphics also doesn't bring up X. This is something which a regular non-power-user will encounter. Instead of throwing up a traceback, I would suggest we have a neat message which indicates to the user 1) the reason of failure and 2) suggests going to synaptic for installing the same (ofcourse with a warning that this could be dangerous) Although not related to this bug, encrypt was a standard option in nautilus, however it has disappeared in karmic. This is the reasons I tried to install seahorse-plugins and encountered this error. Hi Sebastien, I will try and get the backtrace. Have not done that before as I am new to linux world. Steps to reproduce are easy - just run evolution from terminal and access the attachments in an email and you will see errors similar to mine in terminal. This is also dependent on the theme which is selected in ubuntu apperance prefs. [Bug 431812] Re: i915: black screen on boot
All - I have the same problem on my ibm x61s thinkpad. I've just upgraded from jaunty to karmic beta and now I can't get into my system. I tried adding the 'i915.modeset=0' option to the line that begins with kernel, but no success. No matter what I do, I always land on a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Typing 'fsck -y /dev/sda1' followed by enter doesn't do anything and hdd light does not blink. Once I do a ctrl-alt-del the root prompt shows up and runs any commands I'd typed on the blank screen. The machine then reboots and I'm back to the same blinking cursor screen after reboot. Can someone point how I get back into the system and remove the forcefsck. Hope there is a way to get back in. -- i915: black screen on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/431812 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 431812] Re: i915: black screen on boot
I have tried multiple times changing the kernel line to end with i915.modeset=0 and nomodeset, however nothing works.I just get a blinking cursor on a black screen as mentioned in my post above. I am logged in via my jaunty live-cd. Are there any changes I can do to make the system bootable again from my hdd. Should I edit any entries in fstab to prevent the fsck? Or is there any other boot options which I can add at the end of the kernel line to get things going. Any advice would be great. [Bug 431812] Re: i915: black screen on boot
ok i tried a few things when i get the blinking cursor on black screen (after grub screen), I can do a ctrl-alt-del and get to the prompt and quickly do a init 3 and prevent system reboot. After this I can do ctrl-atl-f2 and login. I can also do a sudo dhclient eth0 and get an ip addy and get internet access. However it seems the file system is mounted as ro. This also explains the message on tty1 (after I press ctrl-alt-del) which says cannot remove /forcefsck read-only file-system Should I boot from jaunty livecd and add /fastboot to my partition. Will that work? -- i915: black screen on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/431812 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 431812] Re: i915: black screen on boot
I finally got into my system. After grub, I get a blinking cursor on a black screen. I need to do a ctrl-alt-del to get to a prompt, then quickly type init 3 to prevent reboot. After this I need to remount the file system as rw and then do a sudo service dbus start, followed by sudo service hal start, sudo service gdm start. This gets me into the gui. This is where I have lots of serious issues reported by apport. Not sure anymore if they are related to this issue or to dbus errors.
