[Bug 198353] Re: eeschema redraw errors under compiz

2018-05-02 Thread jerico
This package has been built against the wrong version of wxWidgets (see
the comment in https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bug/1768324) which
renders it totally unusable in Ubuntu Bionic.

Would be great if one of the Ubuntu Universe package maintainers could
fix this. Seems like it shouldn't a big issue...

[Bug 198353] Re: eeschema redraw errors under compiz

2018-05-01 Thread jerico
Can be solved by upgrading to the latest ppa version:
sudo add-apt-repository --yes ppa:js-reynaud/kicad-4
sudo apt update
sudo apt install kicad

Is it possible for one of the package maintainers to package the PPA
version instead?

[Bug 1132736] Re: Xorg fails to start after installing the hardware enablement stack on precise due to missing symlink after purging old xserver-xorg

2014-08-14 Thread jerico
This happened to me simply by upgrading from Precise LTS to Trusty LTS
on two independent machines and then purging residual config of left-
over packages from Precise.

Reinstalling/reconfiguring xserver-xorg-lts-trusty fixed the problem.
This bug is high impact and hard to debug for an average user, though.

What about hacking the postrm scripts of conflicting packages to check
whether a package that holds on to /etc/X11/X is still installed and
fixing the issue there? Not a beautiful solution but better than leaving
users without X after an upgrade...

[Bug 381416] Re: notify-osd should have a close button

2014-07-18 Thread Jerico Serilico
I sometimes have to work with many terminal windows outputting alarms, the
notification bublle is too dark to allow reading through without hovering with
the mouse on it, it is very annoying. Should have a dismiss feature.
Sometimes too notifications happen at the same time and there and completely
hides the terminal window.
I'll try the patched notifyOSD

[Bug 950843] Re: simple scan fails to scan. unable to start scan change scan ner gives no options

2013-10-01 Thread jerico
A few more pieces of information...

Seems to be a regression:
- The scanner does not work under Ubuntu 12.04.3 (kernel 3.8.0-31-generic)
- The same scanner works perfectly with a different computer running Ubuntu
12.04 (kernel 3.2.0-54-generic)

I found out that when I plug in the scanner then scanimage -L will actually
give me a result the first time:
device `xerox_mfp:libusb:003:013' is a SAMSUNG ORION multi-function peripheral

I only get the above error message from the second time onwards when I'm
executing scanimage -L.

[Bug 993298] Re: Please make NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq respect /etc/hosts

2012-07-17 Thread jerico
The previous poster wrote: But prior to Ubuntu 12.04, NM didn't start a
local nameserver at all; no DNS lookups were done externally and
/etc/hosts wasn't respected then either.

IMO this is not true. I've got no instance of dnsmasq running and
entries in /etc/hosts are respected when e.g. letting Firefox (or any
other application I've access to) resolve URLs.

AFAIK /etc/hosts is in not directly linked to dnsmasq and it doesn't
matter whether DNS lookups are done externally or not. The hosts
mechanism is much older than dnsmasq. For backwards compatibility it has
always been maintained as a first layer of resolving host names. IMO it
is most unusual for a Linux distribution to provide a default
configuration that does not respect /etc/hosts. To my knowledge there's
no other operating system distribution (including Mac + Windows) that
does so.

Of course you are free to configure default Ubuntu as you like. But it
would be great to respect published upgrade policy. What happened is
that the upgrade to 12.04 silently changed the configuration in a way
that broke all working /etc/hosts configurations. It is basic
Debian/Ubuntu policy that such a thing should not happen without at
least consulting the user and giving him/her a choice or a heads up.

2012-05-28 Thread Jerico Serilico
I just figured out that it happens when there is no space left in the
launcher , here is how I found out:

1) If I restart the system, I can open Wireshark, it shows up in the launcher
(as a big ?) and in At+Tab
2) close wireshark
3) open libreoffice (not locked to launcher) , it appears as a new icon in the
launcher
4) open wireshark, it appears once again in the launcher and alt+tab
5) close wireshark
6) open gedit (or any other application not locked to launcher, that is , that
creates a new icon in the launcher)
7) open wireshark, it is not shown in the launcher, nor in alt+tab
8) close wireshark
9) even if I close libreoffice ang gedit , wireshark is not shown in the
launcher and alt+tab anymore when I open it , need to restart the session

[Bug 994225] [NEW] Windows virtual machine no longer starts after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise)

2012-05-03 Thread jerico
Public bug reported:

When trying to start my XP and Windows 7 guests for the first time via
Virtual Machine Manager after upgrading to 12.04, the virtual machines
would not start. The Virtual Machine Manager would either become
unresponsive or the instance would simply return to not running state
immediately.

The instance's log in /var/log/libvirt/qemu/...log says:

[...]
kvm: /build/buildd/qemu-kvm-1.0+noroms/memory.c:1239:
memory_region_add_subregion_common: Assertion `!subregion-parent' failed.
2012-05-03 20:33:07.774+: shutting down
[...]

This led me to the following email thread:
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2011-10/msg02929.html

And this response:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2011-10/msg03008.html

I checked /etc/libvirt/qemu/...xml and changed

 type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-0.12'hvm/type

manually to

 type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-1.0'hvm/type

This solved the problem for both, XP and Win7.

Calling the command line with pc-0.12 from the libvirt log directly
would start the virtual machine but it would still not boot correctly. I
could connect to the guest via VNC but most of the time it would just
present a black screen. The guest tried to boot from the Windows 7
recovery partition a few times, though, even showing the recovery GUI
but then would not be able to recover. This is why I file against qemu-
kvm and not libvirt or VMM.

[Bug 993298] [NEW] NetworkManager does not use local hosts configuration any more

2012-05-02 Thread jerico
Public bug reported:

Since 12.04 NetworkManager uses the dnsmasq plugin by default to resolve
DNS requests. Unfortunately the dnsmasq plug-in has --no-hosts, etc.
hard coded [1] which means (among other things) that after the upgrade
to 12.04 /etc/hosts will no longer be used to resolve DNS requests. This
changes the prior behavior of NetworkManager without any visible warning
to the end user. AFAICS there's no other way to work around this problem
as to manually revert the change and disable the dnsmasq plug-in in the
NetworkManager config, see [2,3]:

To turn off dnsmasq in Network Manager, you need to edit
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and comment the 'dns=dnsmasq'
line then do a 'sudo restart network-manager'.

This is of course not a bug in the NetworkManager which just behaves as
intended. The problem is in the change of the configuration of the
Ubuntu packaging which will probably leave many wondering why their
/etc/hosts suddenly no longer works. This cost me considerable time to
debug and probably is a usability problem for others, too.

Maybe you could provide a more visible documentation than that in [3]?
E.g., *including a comment in /etc/hosts that explains the change* and
how to work around it would have saved me a lot of time. It would have
automatically alerted me on upgrade as manual changes to /etc/hosts
would then have triggered a prompt while leaving those users with
standard /etc/hosts in peace.

Probably similar problems arise with other disabled config files and
could be alerted to the users? Thinking of resolv.conf, etc.

[Bug 771905] Re: No logo at boot on nvidia card

2011-06-08 Thread jerico
Hi Stephen, setting quiet splash or switching splash to off in the
config doesn't make a difference for me. I'll check the editing and
timeout workarounds later today. In any case I can confirm that I have
several OS installed which means that I see the grub boot menu. Thanks
for looking into this, btw.

2011-06-07 Thread jerico
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 771905 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/771905

@Stephen: Yes, that's possible. IIRC I had some KMS-related trouble when
plymouth was initially released, too. I think plymouth only started in
lo-res and using uvesafb (which solved the resolution problem) led to
suspend/resume no longer working. Right now, after switching to the
Natty default configuration (without uvesafb), I get console output
after unlocking the hdd.

@Louis: Does it make sense to mark the bugs you mention as duplicates of
this one?

[Bug 777302] [NEW] No password prompt on boot for crypted root disk

2011-05-04 Thread jerico
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

After upgrading from 10.04 Lucid to 11.04 Natty I'm no longer getting a
password prompt on boot to unlock my cryptroot. Directly after selecting
the boot device from the grub menu I see an empty screen. I can enter
the password blindly and press enter afterwards which will correctly
boot into the system. But I don't get any visual feedback - not even
when I type a wrong password.

plymouth: 0.8.2-2ubuntu22
grub: 1.99~rc1-13ubuntu3

I hope that someone can help me debug this. I'm happy to investigate
further but I need some guidance. I don't know where to look next...

[Bug 429748] Re: ath9k - karmic - no 5GHz networks

2010-07-28 Thread jerico
I have a WRT600N router and an Atheros AR9287 chipset ( AR5B9X ) and
cannot see n networks yet n networks are present as a valid network type
in lshw (output below). I am able to connect to b and g networks without
any issues. I also checked the EEPROM settings on my ath9k driver setup
and got the following below. Are there any other suggestions to help
resolve this issue?

[Bug 198724] Re: [amd64] partimage not synced or build

2010-06-24 Thread jerico
Bump. I just did a source install of partimage on lucid and built from
source on amd64 without any trouble. Creating a partition image worked
perfectly on this arch. The only problem seems to be that the Debian
buildd team is waiting for the Debian maintainer to remove the arch from
the blacklist. And the maintainer is not responding. Is there a way to
fix this locally in Ubuntu? I'd like to fix this but unfortunately I
don't know enough about Ubuntu's sync system to make a proposal let
alone have the rights to do something. If I can help: please let me know
how.

[Bug 592592] Re: Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s

2010-06-20 Thread jerico
Hi Robert, I'm sorry you're having difficulties in applying my
workaround to your environment.

I suggest you try to find out whether halevt functions properly by
running it in the foreground:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/halevt stop
$ sudo -u halevt halevt -fig plugdev

Now if you press the brightness buttons you should see hal events on
your screen. In my case this is something like:

Condition:
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input,ButtonPressed
 (brightness-down)
Condition:
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input,ButtonPressed
 (brightness-up)

If that's the case then please check again whether you've really
correctly edited both (halevt and sudo) configuration files to represent
your local file paths and server name. You might have to read the
corresponding man pages. (Sorry if I'm explaining the obvious, you
probably did that already...)

If the events look differently then you may have to change your
halevt.xml accordingly. If you don't get any events then - bad luck. You
won't be able to use my workaround. At least not without further
investigation why the events are not triggered. I didn't have to
configure anything to get the HAL events.

Finally don't forget to switch your halevt daemon back on:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/halevt start

If you've checked all that and it still doesn't work then I'm afraid
I've no clue where you could look further. :-(

[Bug 592592] Re: Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s

2010-06-19 Thread jerico
@Robert, I also had that first keypress effect, even before I
installed my workaround. Subsequent key presses are then ignored. I
/guess/ that this is due to the event being recognized but then the
brightness adjustment itself failing. I didn't have time to look at the
source code, though. I'll eventually do that when I find the time.

Can you please check, whether you have the
/proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness entry in your proc file system? If
so, does echoing values between 0 and 100 to that (virtual) file as root
change brightness? Make sure you use one of the allowed levels indicated
in the brightness file!

$ sudo su
# echo 40 /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness
# echo 100 /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness

If that did something then you're most likely able to use the workaround
I described. The brightness file might be named differently or reside in
a different folder of the proc system. In that case you can adapt my
script for your layout of the /proc filesystem.

@Serghei: Same thing for you: Do you see the system file I mentioned?
Can you change brightness manually? Your Laptop is from a different HP
product line so it is probable that your case is different.

[Bug 443358] Re: No Mouse-Button Reverse Option for Touchpads

2010-06-12 Thread jerico
Hi, I had a similar problem: I wanted to configure the buttons for
single finger tap differently from the default which isn't possible as
gnome-settings-daemon has the tap button configuration hard-coded and
overwrites anything configured via xorg.conf, hal, udev, etc.

This is a problem which seems to create considerable confusion. Several
others have reported this before, see among others
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics/+bug/457622 or
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1322497.

I've created a simple patch that allows button configuration via gconf-
editor (see attachment). This is a solution that can easily be built
upon in gnome-control-center, if sombody likes to provide a more
accessible front-end.

The gconf settings to be set are:
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/tap_to_click_(rt|rb|lt|lb)

It would be great if you could include this patch into the next release,
either here or upstream.

[Bug 592592] [NEW] Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s

2010-06-11 Thread jerico
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I've got an HP ProBook 4720s with the latest gnome-power-manager installed
(lucid). I've got the following problems:
- the brightness up/down buttons have no effect
- the brightness adjustment applet has no effect and does not correctly display
the current brightness
- the brightness adjustment on ac power online/offline events does not work.

I believe that the problem lies in the actual adjustment of brightness and not
in the correct recognition of the hardware event:
- I can manually read and adjust brightness by reading/writing from/to
/proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness.
- I can attach a script to the brightness up/down key events via Gnome Keyboard
Shortcuts
- I get a correct HAL event via halevt daemon
- I get a correct key name mapping when looking at proc/input/event8 via keymap
- I don't get an output when running gnome-power-manager in verbose mode and
pressing the brightness up/down keys

Unfortunately I'm not a HAL/udev/acpi specialist. I've tried to track
this problem down as far as I could. But now I'm stuck. Anything more I
can do for you to find/fix the root cause of the problem?

[Bug 592592] Re: Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s

2010-06-11 Thread jerico
I now have a workaround for the brightness hotkeys (not for the other
two problems, though):

1) Create a script brightness.sh:

  #!/bin/bash

  # Valid input?
  if [ $1 != up -a $1 != down ]; then exit 1; fi

  # Current brightness
  CURRENT=`grep current /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness | egrep -o
'([0-9]{,2}|100)$'`
  if [ -z $CURRENT ]; then exit 1; fi

  # Next value
  if [ $1 = up -a $CURRENT = 0 ]; then
  NEXT=5
  elif [ $1 = down -a $CURRENT = 100 ]; then
  NEXT=96
  else
  if [ $1 = up ]; then
  NEXT=`sed -nr /^levels/ s/.*(^| )$CURRENT ([0-9]{,2}|100)(
|$).*/\2/p /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness`
  else
  NEXT=`sed -nr /^levels/ s/.*(^| )([0-9]{,2}|100) $CURRENT(
|$).*/\2/p /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness`
  fi
  fi
  if [ -z $NEXT ]; then exit 1; fi

  # Set new brightness
  echo -n $NEXT | tee /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness /dev/null
  exit 0

2) sudo apt-get install halevt

3) Edit /etc/halevt/halevt.xml:

!-- Support for Brightness Up/Down Events until #592592 has been solved
--

halevt:Device match=hal.info.category = input

halevt:Condition name=ButtonPressed value=brightness-up
exec=sudo /home/fgrandel/brightness.sh up/

halevt:Condition name=ButtonPressed value=brightness-down
exec=sudo /home/fgrandel/brightness.sh down/

/halevt:Device

4) sudo visudo

# Allow halevt to execute the brightness script

halevt laptop-fg = (root) NOPASSWD: /home/fgrandel/brightness.sh

Yes, I'm using mdadm. But I have done everything over the gui. Here my

1. First I have delete my fakeraid right at the beginning of startup pc
2. Downloaded alternate Ubuntu CD:

3. Started from that CD
4. At partition part choose Software Raid and set up your software raid
5. Go on with installation

For additional help maybe the following site can help:

Like already mentioned. There are some pro and contra between
SoftwareRaid and Fakeraid. I'm also not the specialist. Each person has
to probably find on it's on out if these is a alternative for him or
not. I suppose changing back from SoftwareRaid to Fakeraid as soon the
problem is solved is also not so easy or even possible without loosing

[Bug 407824] Re: BOTH Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100 AND Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8040T PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 12) FAIL TO LOAD

2009-11-28 Thread jerico
I have never applied a patch before, but I have worked with dpk. I have tried
numerous times to get this working with no success.
I downloaded all the files from
http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp418933-karmic/ and installed all the .deb
packages. Sometimes in different orders. The installs seemed to work well, but
when I reboot, I still have not network access (wired or wireless). I have a
Toshiba with Intell Wifi 5100.

I have no clue how to apply a patch and the instructions I have found
online suggest that I would apply the patch prior to creating a .deb
package.

My question is, how can I get this version of the kernel installed so I
can get the network hardware working. Is there a certain order for what
packages to install first. Am I supposed to do something with the patch
file?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I enjoyed using Ubuntu 8.10 on my
laptop in the past, but I want to take advantage of the new features of
9.10.

[Bug 45021] Re: including omnibook module would help with ACPI support on HP laptops

2009-04-05 Thread jerico
Please also include this script, if anyhow possible:
http://omke.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/*checkout*/omke/omke/omke.pl

It enables switching screen backlight on and off:

# backlight off
sudo ./omke.pl -d 0
...
# backlight on
sudo ./omke.pl -d 1

When combined with a gnome key binding this may replace the otherwise
unsupported function key.

[Bug 272528] [NEW] /var/run/prelude-manager is not recreated on startup

2008-09-20 Thread jerico
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: prelude-manager

I am using Hardy with prelude-manager 0.9.10-1

The working directory /var/run/prelude-manager may be destroyed during
reboot when /var/run is mounted as a tempfs (as is the case with default
Ubuntu Hardy). It is then not recreated on startup (i.e. in the
/etc/init.d/prelude-manager script).

The error is not detected in the init script although prelude-manager
returns with an error code.

[Bug 259730] [NEW] UnicodeDecodeError on http://trac.lawyer-web.org/wiki/CamelCase

I get the following error when calling

This can be solved when patching line 824 in /var/lib/python-
support/python2.5/trac/wiki/formatter.py like this:

 - result = re.sub(self.wiki.rules, self.replace, line)
+ result = re.sub(self.wiki.rules, self.replace, to_unicode(line))

I however didn't fully understand the problem. Maybe my patch is only
symptomatic. It seems strange to me that line is not unicode encoded
anyway.

Re: [Bug 259730] Re: UnicodeDecodeError on http://trac.lawyer-web.org/wiki/CamelCase

2008-08-20 Thread jerico
Hi Tim,

I am using the current Ubuntu Hardy trac version (0.10.4-2). The error
occured on a fresh install when calling the CamelCase wiki page (which
is in its original state).

I am using a local mysql db backend accessed over local tcp.

The offending characters are the four typographic that you'll see on
the page, namely ... “AlabamA” and “ABc” ... Those are obviously no
ASCII characters and therefore lead to an error message when it is tried
to convert them to ascii.

Best regards,

Florian

[Bug 184557] Re: Circular build-depends, needs initial bootstrapping on the buildds

2008-06-19 Thread jerico
I am currently working on this package, trying to resolve the remaining
issues and dependencies. (There are more than just missing dependencies,
e.g. build script does not compile all necessary classes, stubs and
parsers, init script is missing, even when completely built, run-script
will not yet start.) AFAICS this will take some time still as the
package seems to be in an early unstable phase. See
http://lists.debian.org/debian-java/2008/06/msg00016.html
