[Bug 198353] Re: eeschema redraw errors under compiz
This package has been built against the wrong version of wxWidgets (see the comment in https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bug/1768324) which renders it totally unusable in Ubuntu Bionic. [Bug 1132736] Re: Xorg fails to start after installing the hardware enablement stack on precise due to missing symlink after purging old xserver-xorg
This happened to me simply by upgrading from Precise LTS to Trusty LTS on two independent machines and then purging residual config of left- over packages from Precise. Reinstalling/reconfiguring xserver-xorg-lts-trusty fixed the problem. This bug is high impact and hard to debug for an average user, though. [Bug 993298] Re: Please make NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq respect /etc/hosts
The previous poster wrote: But prior to Ubuntu 12.04, NM didn't start a local nameserver at all; no DNS lookups were done externally and /etc/hosts wasn't respected then either. IMO this is not true. I've got no instance of dnsmasq running and entries in /etc/hosts are respected when e.g. letting Firefox (or any other application I've access to) resolve URLs. AFAIK /etc/hosts is in not directly linked to dnsmasq and it doesn't matter whether DNS lookups are done externally or not. The hosts mechanism is much older than dnsmasq. For backwards compatibility it has always been maintained as a first layer of resolving host names. IMO it is most unusual for a Linux distribution to provide a default configuration that does not respect /etc/hosts. To my knowledge there's no other operating system distribution (including Mac + Windows) that does so. Of course you are free to configure default Ubuntu as you like. But it would be great to respect published upgrade policy. What happened is that the upgrade to 12.04 silently changed the configuration in a way that broke all working /etc/hosts configurations. It is basic Debian/Ubuntu policy that such a thing should not happen without at least consulting the user and giving him/her a choice or a heads up. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993298 Title: Please make NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq respect /etc/hosts To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/993298/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Calling the command line with pc-0.12 from the libvirt log directly would start the virtual machine but it would still not boot correctly. I could connect to the guest via VNC but most of the time it would just present a black screen. [Bug 993298] [NEW] NetworkManager does not use local hosts configuration any more
Public bug reported: Since 12.04 NetworkManager uses the dnsmasq plugin by default to resolve DNS requests. Unfortunately the dnsmasq plug-in has --no-hosts, etc. hard coded [1] which means (among other things) that after the upgrade to 12.04 /etc/hosts will no longer be used to resolve DNS requests. This changes the prior behavior of NetworkManager without any visible warning to the end user. AFAICS there's no other way to work around this problem as to manually revert the change and disable the dnsmasq plug-in in the NetworkManager config, see [2,3]: To turn off dnsmasq in Network Manager, you need to edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and comment the 'dns=dnsmasq' line then do a 'sudo restart network-manager'. This is of course not a bug in the NetworkManager which just behaves as intended. The problem is in the change of the configuration of the Ubuntu packaging which will probably leave many wondering why their /etc/hosts suddenly no longer works. This cost me considerable time to debug and probably is a usability problem for others, too. Maybe you could provide a more visible documentation than that in [3]? E.g., *including a comment in /etc/hosts that explains the change* and how to work around it would have saved me a lot of time. It would have automatically alerted me on upgrade as manual changes to /etc/hosts would then have triggered a prompt while leaving those users with standard /etc/hosts in peace. Probably similar problems arise with other disabled config files and could be alerted to the users? Thinking of resolv.conf, etc. [1] http://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/tree/src/dnsmasq-manager/nm-dnsmasq-manager.c, line 285 [2] i.e. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1968061 [3] http://www.stgraber.org/2012/02/24/dns-in-ubuntu-12-04/ ** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993298 Title: NetworkManager does not use local hosts configuration any more To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/993298/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Bump. I just did a source install of partimage on lucid and built from source on amd64 without any trouble. Creating a partition image worked perfectly on this arch. [Bug 592592] Re: Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s
Hi Robert, I'm sorry you're having difficulties in applying my workaround to your environment. I suggest you try to find out whether halevt functions properly by running it in the foreground: $ sudo /etc/init.d/halevt stop $ sudo -u halevt halevt -fig plugdev Now if you press the brightness buttons you should see hal events on your screen. In my case this is something like: Condition: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input,ButtonPressed (brightness-down) Condition: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input,ButtonPressed (brightness-up) If that's the case then please check again whether you've really correctly edited both (halevt and sudo) configuration files to represent your local file paths and server name. You might have to read the corresponding man pages. (Sorry if I'm explaining the obvious, you probably did that already...) If the events look differently then you may have to change your halevt.xml accordingly. If you don't get any events then - bad luck. You won't be able to use my workaround. At least not without further investigation why the events are not triggered. I didn't have to configure anything to get the HAL events. Finally don't forget to switch your halevt daemon back on: $ sudo /etc/init.d/halevt start If you've checked all that and it still doesn't work then I'm afraid I've no clue where you could look further. :-( -- Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/592592 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 592592] Re: Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s
@Robert, I also had that first keypress effect, even before I installed my workaround. Subsequent key presses are then ignored. I /guess/ that this is due to the event being recognized but then the brightness adjustment itself failing. I didn't have time to look at the source code, though. I'll eventually do that when I find the time. Can you please check, whether you have the /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness entry in your proc file system? If so, does echoing values between 0 and 100 to that (virtual) file as root change brightness? Make sure you use one of the allowed levels indicated in the brightness file! $ sudo su # echo 40 /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness # echo 100 /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness If that did something then you're most likely able to use the workaround I described. The brightness file might be named differently or reside in a different folder of the proc system. In that case you can adapt my script for your layout of the /proc filesystem. @Serghei: Same thing for you: Do you see the system file I mentioned? Can you change brightness manually? [Bug 443358] Re: No Mouse-Button Reverse Option for Touchpads
Hi, I had a similar problem: I wanted to configure the buttons for single finger tap differently from the default which isn't possible as gnome-settings-daemon has the tap button configuration hard-coded and overwrites anything configured via xorg.conf, hal, udev, etc. This is a problem which seems to create considerable confusion. Several others have reported this before, see among others https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input- synaptics/+bug/457622 or http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1322497. I've created a simple patch that allows button configuration via gconf- editor (see attachment). This is a solution that can easily be built upon in gnome-control-center, if sombody likes to provide a more accessible front-end. The gconf settings to be set are: /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/tap_to_click_(rt|rb|lt|lb) It would be great if you could include this patch into the next release, either here or upstream. ** Patch added: tap button configuration via gconf-editor http://launchpadlibrarian.net/50246112/enable-corner-tap-button-config.patch -- No Mouse-Button Reverse Option for Touchpads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/443358 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 592592] [NEW] Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager I've got an HP ProBook 4720s with the latest gnome-power-manager installed (lucid). I've got the following problems: - the brightness up/down buttons have no effect - the brightness adjustment applet has no effect and does not correctly display the current brightness - the brightness adjustment on ac power online/offline events does not work. I believe that the problem lies in the actual adjustment of brightness and not in the correct recognition of the hardware event: - I can manually read and adjust brightness by reading/writing from/to /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness. - I can attach a script to the brightness up/down key events via Gnome Keyboard Shortcuts - I get a correct HAL event via halevt daemon - I get a correct key name mapping when looking at proc/input/event8 via keymap - I don't get an output when running gnome-power-manager in verbose mode and pressing the brightness up/down keys Unfortunately I'm not a HAL/udev/acpi specialist. AFAICS this will take some time still as the package seems to be in an early unstable phase.
