[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"
OMG, what an incredibly stupid move by the ubuntu maintainers. I have the same problem as anyone else who has been forcefully downgraded and I tried to solve it by reverting to Daniel's version. However, this "downgrade" would uninstall a lot of GNOME related packages (including `gnome-shell`): ``` Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Reading state information... [Bug 1267255] Re: [MIR] php7.0 (php7.0-fpm binary)
Thanks for the clarification Robie! Btw, I agree that it's totally reasonable not to move packages to a different component after release. That's why I asked if php7.0-fpm will be moved to main in the next LTS release (18.04). I still think that it would be great to have all packages that are built from src:php7.0 in main (with guaranteed updates) instead of spreading it out over different components... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1267255 Title: [MIR] php7.0 (php7.0-fpm binary) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php7.0/+bug/1267255/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1267255] Re: [MIR] php7.0 (php7.0-fpm binary)
After some more research, I think that I partly mixed up the "-security vs -updates" with the "main vs. universe" issue. If I understood correctly, -updates contains package updates that are not security related while -security contains only security related updates, but these pockets are NOT related to the "components" (main, universe, etc.), i. e. packages from universe are also updated through -security and -updates pockets, as long as they are supported / maintained. If that's correct, then please ignore my question regarding the unattended- upgrades ;-) So, my remaining questions are: - how long will "php7.0-fpm" receive security updates and critical bug-fixes? - what does "community supported" actually mean? Is it officially defined somewhere? - how long are packages from universe actually supported and what kind of updates (security, critical bugs, etc.) do they receive? [Bug 1267255] Re: [MIR] php7.0 (php7.0-fpm binary)
Thanks for your fast response, Nish! > Well, that's odd, but as you found in the related bug, also expected > (with the older ubuntu-support-status command). I don't think it's wrong in case of "php7.0-fpm", because this package is in universe and therefore actually _not_ "officially supported by the security team", as mentioned here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/FAQ. > What is "this" problem in this sentence? That a tool mentions unsupported status? No, the problem is that "php7.0-fpm" is in universe and therefore "not officially supported by the security team", while it's at the same time a very important component of most web servers. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any official statement explaining what "unsupported" (or "community supported", as it's called now) actually means. On my 16.04 server, I noticed that I did not receive any updates to "php7.0-fpm" (and the other packages listed above) from "xenial- security" after the first 9 month. I know that there are updates available in "xenial-updates". But, like probably most LTS server administrators, I've only enabled unattended upgrades from "xenial- security" on my server and therefore did not receive the php7.0-XXX updates for a long time... I've now also enabled unattended upgrades from "xenial-updates", hoping that I get security fixes for my "php7.0-XXX" packages from there, but I'm not sure if that will be the case, because php7.0-fpm is in universe. Furthermore, I'm not sure if enabling unattended upgrades from "xenial-updates" may cause problems, because it does not only contain security fixes... what's is considered "best practice" in this case? > Again, I think you're just misapprehending what is 'supported' (in that > there is someone paying attention? -- I'm not sure what you expect, > exactly) vs. what is in main? OK, I'll try to make it more clear. This is what I understood so far: according to the source mentioned above, "officially supported" means (in case of Xenial) that a package receives regular security fixes through "xenial-security" for 5 years, while "community supported" means something like "There may be updates, but it's not guaranteed. They may be released shortly after upstream, but maybe only 2 years later. Also, there is no clear distinction between security fixes and other updates." The latter seems to be true for all packages in universe, no matter if they come from "xenial-updates" or any other pocket. Only the packages in main are "officially supported". And therefore my conclusion is: packages in "universe" are not reliably updated after 9 months and should therefore not be installed on a (public) web server that is only upgraded every 2 to 5 years. This pretty unrealistic for "php7.0-fpm" (I simply need it), that's why I like to have it in main. Please correct me if I'm wrong (some sources / official statements would be nice too)! I really hope that I'm wrong in this case :-) > To be clear, regardless of what `ubuntu-support-status` says, it's not > like php7.0-fpm is going to stop being available or bugs fixed (there > aren't that many filed, afaict). Sounds good, but what does that mean exactly? How long will I receive updates for "php7.0-fpm" on my xenial server? 5 years? Will these updates contain only security fixes? Will they be released shortly after upstream fixes? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1267255 Title: [MIR] php7.0 (php7.0-fpm binary) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php7.0/+bug/1267255/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1267255] Re: [MIR] php7.0 (php7.0-fpm binary)
It's almost a year since the last comment... Any news on this? I've only recently noticed that "ubuntu-support-status --show-unsupported | grep php7" shows php7.0-fpm (and other PHP packages) as unsupported in 16.04 LTS: > php-zip php7.0-fpm php7.0-imap php7.0-intl php7.0-mbstring php7.0-mcrypt php7.0-xsl php7.0-zip I did not find any other usable information on this topic beside this bug report. Most people probably don't even know about this problem. It's easy to overlook though, since the "php7.0" meta-package is in main and "apt-cache show php7.0" shows it as fully supported: > Package: php7.0 > Priority: optional > Section: php [...] > Depends: php7.0-fpm | libapache2-mod-php7.0 | php7.0-cgi, php7.0-common [...] > Supported: 5y And, what's even more confusing, it also depends on "php7.0-fpm". Imo, most people who see this will think: "OK, PHP7 has 5 year support, so I'm safe with my Ubuntu LTS". But in fact, they are not... at least if they use FPM (what they probably do). Like most people here, I think that php7-fpm should definitely be supported for the full LTS period, because it's a basic component of most web servers. How is the chance that is will be the case in the next LTS version? BTW: this bug report is slightly related, because it deals with the problem of the different support timespans in LTS and the bad image Ubuntu LTS has because of it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /update-manager/+bug/1574670 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1267255 Title: [MIR] php7.0 (php7.0-fpm binary) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php7.0/+bug/1267255/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1647100] [NEW] Scrollwheel window switching should be consistent with Alt+`
Public bug reported: Before we start: I'm not a developer, so forgive me if I don't get some terminology right. Alt+` window switching seems to change the order of windows in the stack, while scrollwheel window switching does NOT. This results in some inconsistent window behavior. I'm gonna try to illustrate the issue with an example. Open 1 Firefox window (let's call it F1) and 2 Nautilus windows (N1 & N2). Keep all 3 windows unmaximized with a part of all 3 visible at the same time. Alt+` test: 1. Set the starting window order by clicking them in the order N1, F1, N2. 2. Press Alt+` once. The visible window order (from bottom to top) changes to F1, N2, N1. 3. Press Alt+` again. The visible window order changes to F1, N1, N2. Scrolling test: 1. Set the same starting window order as before by clicking them in the order N1, F1, N2. 2. Scroll once over Nautilus launcher icon. The visible window order changes to N2, F1, N1. 3. Scroll again over Nautilus launcher icon. The visible window order changes to N1, F1, N2. Notice the difference? - Alt+` brings N1 and N2 together. This is the expected behavior. - Scrolling leaves F1 between N1 and N2. This is okay if all windows are maximized, but can be disconcerting at other times because you see unexpected window movements. [Bug 792085] Re: Automatic remount of safely removed usb 3.0 drive
Definitely not Nautilus related. The same occurs if you run “Disks” utility, select a USB 3 disk and then “Power off” from the menu near the top-right corner. To securely remove a USB 3 disk I unmount it first then run “Disks” utility, select it and then press “Standby Now” from the same menu. No problems so far. [Bug 1310718] Re: package gdm 3.10.0.1-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
I can confirm this bug. It actually broke my dist-upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04. I fixed it manually by deleting the broken script and removing gdm. I tried to reinstall gdm today but the package is still broken, i. e. the post-install script is broken. [Bug 1160569]
(In reply to Ginn Chen from comment #53) YF, my understanding is this bug will not cause a crash like Bug 986735. The GLib-CRITICAL warning is printed when Firefox starts. It may cause a crash at startup on some systems. (although I don't think it really happens) But it should not cause a crash when you open 2 tabs. See comment 34, comment 35, comment 36. I jumped to premature conclusions, I have no evidence this is this bug what's causing my FF28 to crash. I just saw the same error message in FF as in Thunderbird and they seem to crash in a similar fashion and comment 3 was consistent with my experience. See comment 27, Karl Tomlinson seems to know what he is talking about. My glib is not built with G_DISABLE_CHECKS and so according to Karl, should be a no-op, a 'do nothing'-instruction. I've never seen a crash on an empty startup. Sorry for spreading confusion. Firefox does have some major problem on Linux, just guess this bug is not the root cause. Perhaps bug 920200 as suggested by comment 36, tho the last word over there is 'it shouldn't really happen'. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1160569 Title: [regression] GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size == 0' failed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/1160569/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Actually it is the same bug, but in your case the second saned process doesn't constantly spam syslog. I've did some more tests and it seems that the syslog-spamming does not always occur on my machine (may be a race condition). [Bug 637729] Re: Thinkpad SL510 LCD switches on/off every second due to wrong button/lid events
I just experimented with a few different kernel versions, older and newer, from the mainline builds and from Karmic. Turns out that I get the problems described above with all kernels 2.6.32 I tried. The youngest kernel I found where everything works properly is linux- image-2.6.31-22-generic, which I got from http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/linux-image-2.6.31-22-generic. With linux-image-2.6.32-020632-generic from mainline the UI for entering the HD encryption key doesn't appear (just the framebuffer console with a lonely blinking cursor), but I can enter the key and later the display works fine. Starting from 2.6.32-02063201 the screen stays completely dark. The key can be entered and the OS itself seems to boot, but the display stays black. I can do a clean reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del. From some point on (or depending on the build, I don't know what the differences between the various mainline builds are), the UI is shown, but the display turns on and off. In all versions, the problems can be worked around by booting with nomodeset (vga=normal isn't even necessary). If I do that, the display doesn't blink and sleep mode works. For reference, here are the notes I took during testing: linux-image-2.6.31-11-rt - OK - Lucid linux-image-2.6.31-02063113-generic - OK - Karmic Mainline linux-image-2.6.31-22-generic - OK - Karmic linux-image-2.6.32-020632-generic - almost OK - Mainline- no UI für HD encryption visible, but display works later linux-image-2.6.32-02063201-generic - NOK - Mainline- display stays black linux-image-2.6.32-02063202-generic - NOK - Mainline- display stays black linux-image-2.6.32-02063205-generic - NOK - Mainline- display stays black linux-image-2.6.32-02063209-generic - NOK - Lucid Mainline - display stays black linux-image-2.6.32-02063215-generic - NOK - Lucid Mainline - display stays black linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic - NOK - Lucid - display blinks linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic - NOK - Lucid - display blinks linux-image-2.6.32-23-generic - NOK - Lucid - display blinks linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic - NOK - Lucid - display blinks linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic - NOK - Lucid Mainline - display blinks linux-image-2.6.36-020636rc4-generic - NOK - Lucid Mainline - display blinks -- Thinkpad SL510 LCD switches on/off every second due to wrong button/lid events https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/637729 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 637729] [NEW] Thinkpad SL510 LCD switches on/off every second due to wrong button/lid events
Public bug reported: This issue suddenly started yesterday, even though I am not aware of any configuration changes that could have been made in the past few days, so I'm not entirely sure there's no hardware problem involved. Anyway, I put another hard drive into the system and tested this with a fresh Windows 7 install, where the system does NOT show the behavior in question. The display behaves normally until the kernel is loaded (in BIOS or grub). As soon as the console switches to framebuffer, the display starts to turn on and back off incessantly. When I kill acpid and do cat /proc/acpi/event, this is what I see: ... button/lid LID 0080 000f button/lid LID 0080 0010 button/lid LID 0080 0011 button/lid LID 0080 0012 button/lid LID 0080 0013 ... with the lines appearing synchronously to the blinking of the LCD. When I attach an external monitor, the monitor and the LCD switch on and off at the same times. By while [ 1 ]; do cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state ; done I see that ACPI seems to think that the lid is opening and closing all of the time. When I add vga=normal nomodeset to the grub entry to disable the framebuffer, this does not occur. However, standby mody doesn't work properly any more, which it did before yesterday. Sporadically it works, but most of the time the machine seems not to wake up again - either the screens stays black, or I only get a blinking cursor and no virtual consoles or X.org display. A few times gdm seems to have been completely restarted, and only once did I get to the point where I could unlock the previously running session. Additionally, changing from the non-framebuffer virtual console to the graphical console with Ctrl-Alt-F7 seems to trigger an event which makes the system try to go into Standby mode, which fails due to an error message saying Access denied. I tried the above with the mainline build linux- image-2.6.35-02063504-generic_2.6.35-02063504.201008271919_i386. No difference. The machine in question is a Lenovo Thinkpad SL510, Type 2847, Model 7MG. I already installed the latest BIOS version, which helped absolutely nothing. Switching the driver from Lexmark E120n Foomatic/pxlmono to Generic PCL 5e Printer Foomatic/ljet4d fixes the behavior for me too, on both machines. Jobs are printed immediately with that driver. -- Printing to a Lexmark network E120N is very slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/548747 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 580006] Re: Headphone jack sense missing on Realtek ALC269
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: It seems as though the channel for enabling/disabling headphone jack sense is missing for this card (looked for it in alsamixer and kmix, found nothing). There are separate channels Headphone and Speaker. Both work as intended, I can change the volume and mute both channels independently and get the expected results. I'm just missing the functionality that the internal speaker is automatically disabled when a headphone is plugged in (and re-enabled when it's NOT plugged in). There's a mute button on the chassis (produces no key events with xev) which mutes the internal speakers, but not the headphone channel. When using this button to mute, the mixer doesn't show that the speaker is muted, though. The machine is a Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 (with the latest BIOS installed, 1.35-1.19). alsamixer reports the card as HDA Intel, chip Intel G45 DEVCTG. /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 says Codec: Realtek ALC269. lspci says: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) I compared the contents of /proc/asound/card*/codec#* with and without a headphone plugged in: je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* no-headphone je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* headphone je...@tp:~$ diff -U 2 no-headphone headphone --- no-headphone2010-05-13 16:42:07.715206723 +0200 +++ headphone 2010-05-13 16:42:15.643206222 +0200 @@ -225,6 +225,6 @@ Node 0x20 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf00040: Mono Processing caps: benign=0, ncoeff=33 - Processing Coefficient: 0x227 - Coefficient Index: 0x0f + Processing Coefficient: 0xa100 + Coefficient Index: 0x10 Node 0x21 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono Node 0x22 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono These values are the only differences, but they seem to change all the time, no matter whether a headphone is plugged in or not: je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* no-headphone1 je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* no-headphone2 je...@tp:~$ diff -U 2 no-headphone1 no-headphone2 --- no-headphone1 2010-05-13 16:39:28.836209887 +0200 +++ no-headphone2 2010-05-13 16:39:31.360207130 +0200 @@ -225,6 +225,6 @@ Node 0x20 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf00040: Mono Processing caps: benign=0, ncoeff=33 - Processing Coefficient: 0x480 - Coefficient Index: 0x0d + Processing Coefficient: 0xb000 + Coefficient Index: 0x0e Node 0x21 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono Node 0x22 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: alsa-utils 1.0.22-0ubuntu5 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.33-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Thu May 13 16:24:23 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release i386 (20100427.1) ProcEnviron: LC_TIME=de_AT.UTF-8 LANGUAGE= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: alsa-utils + --- + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21. + Architecture: i386 + ArecordDevices: + List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices + card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC269 Analog [ALC269 Analog] +Subdevices: 1/1 +Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USERPID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC0: jensi 1693 F knotify4 + jensi 1729 F pulseaudio + jensi 1759 F kmix + Card0.Amixer.info: + Card hw:0 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0xf2a0 irq 22' +Mixer name : 'Intel G45 DEVCTG' +Components : 'HDA:10ec0269,17aa212c,0014 HDA:80862802,80860101,0010' +Controls : 18 +Simple ctrls : 10 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=788a0e69-d97d-4313-8a3d-a7f3891ac886 + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release i386 (20100427.1) + MachineType: LENOVO 28477MG + Package: linux (not installed) + ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic root=/dev/mapper/hostname-root ro quiet splash + ProcEnviron: + LC_TIME=de_AT.UTF-8 + LANGUAGE= + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.33-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 + Regression: No + RelatedPackageVersions: linux-firmware 1.34 + Reproducible: Yes + Tags: lucid needs-upstream-testing + Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic i686 + UserGroups: adm admin audio cdrom dialout dip fax floppy fuse lpadmin netdev plugdev sambashare tape video + dmi.bios.date: 04/30/2010 + dmi.bios.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.bios.version: 6JET77WW (1.35 ) + dmi.board.name: 28477MG + dmi.board.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.board.version: Not Available + dmi.chassis.asset.tag: No Asset Information + dmi.chassis.type: 10 + dmi.chassis.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.chassis.version: Not Available + dmi.modalias:
