[Bug 1240585] [NEW] No sound after upgrade to image 99

2013-10-16 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

Today I upgraded to image 99 and no sound worked in the music and
settings app (testing phone sounds). Rebooted multiple times and same
issue. I saw the indicator and volume control as expected, and ensured
it was up.

When putting my phone up to my ear I also heard light crackling from the
speaker.

I then called my phone to test if calls could be heard and it worked as
expected, and then the music app worked fine. It seemed to unblock the
sound.

ogre seems to think it is something to do with transitioning between
sound profiles and asked me to file a bug. :-)

[Bug 1239199] [NEW] Click packages generated by the SDK don't install on the device

2013-10-12 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

Follow these steps:

 * Generate a QML project.
 * Click the Packaging sidebar entry and use the default 'networking' permssion.
 * Click Build - Ubuntu Touch - Install application on device

On the device (in my case a Nexus 4), search for the app and run it. All
I get is a black screen (some other apps I tried this with I just get a
white screen).

I check in /opt and the correct package and version is installed.

[Bug 1182734] Re: Slide out toolbar should be displayed by default on the desktop (swiping is difficult)

2013-10-08 Thread Jono Bacon
From what I can tell the current solution to this bug is that the
toolbar is hidden and when the mouse enters the region of where the
toolbar exists a hint is displayed and the user will drag out the
toolbar.

If this is the recommended approach I think we are making a mistake. I
think this doesn't make sense for two reasons:

 1. Historically desktop applications show toolbars by default; it is
unintuitive for a user to have to pull out a toolbar to make use of it. I
understand the rationale here on the phone as we use the edges, but we don't
use the edge of the desktop screen on the desktop as we are using windows.
 2. Having to pull out the toolbar everytime you need to use it is going to get
rather frustrating rather quickly. It also requires a special level of mouse
dexterity as the 1GU area is quite narrow to pull out the toolbar.

Can the design team provide some rationale about why we don't simply
display the toolbar by default?

[Bug 1229851] [NEW] Scrolling up and down doesn't work unless I expand a scope

2013-09-24 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

On build 60 I have an unusual bug where I can't scroll up and down in
the app scope unless I expand a scope (e.g. Installed apps or More
Suggestions). If I reduce the scope to only show two lines, I can't
scroll the overall scope up and down, if I expand a sub-scope (e.g.
Installed apps) I can then scroll.

[Bug 1208485] [NEW] Skype audio in Saucy broken

2013-08-05 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

In the last week or so Skype audio in Saucy has broken. I mostly don't
hear anything but occassionally when I try to make a test call a get
loud distortion until I kill Skype (and in some cases I need to reboot
to get rid of it).

I am running Intel, Skype 4.2.0.11 (the multiarch binary for 12.04 from
the skype.com).

Skype is a core requirement for many of us to work, so this is a pretty
critical bug.

2013-07-18 Thread Jono Bacon
I don't have any further suspend/resume issues (running Saucy), so I
consider this fixed.

[Bug 1182905] [NEW] charm-tools requires extra environments.yaml config

2013-05-22 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

This is what happened to me:

 * Configured environments.yaml for AWS.
 * I bootstrapped Juju, deployed wordpress and mysql and related them. I
exposed wordpress and hit it in the browser. It worked. Woo!
 * While doing this I decided to install charm-tools
 * Now when I use Juju it errors requiring me to configure additional parts of
environments.yaml

Now, at first it only required me to configure a default-series for each
provider, which is a no-brainer, but then it asked for maas-oauth
config.

This completely stopped me in my tracks. I don't care about the other
providers as I have already got my AWS provider configured and up and
running, and it put Juju in a position where it stopped working for me
due to the missing configuration.

[Bug 1183110] [NEW] Handshake error when first bootstrapping with AWS

2013-05-22 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

When I first configured Juju on my machine (originally 0.7) for AWS I
got a handshake error when I first bootstrapped.

When I bootstrapped next it worked. I also experienced handshake errors
when deploying mysql, but again, second try seemed to work.

Switched to gojuju, created new environments.yaml and same issue with
first bootstrap:

jono@forge:~$ juju bootstrap
error: Get

[Bug 1183129] [NEW] 'juju status' difficult to read and provides unneccessary information

2013-05-22 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

From using 'juju status' it provides me with a lot of detail, but most
of it I don't care about. I care about the following:

 * Are my machines up.
 * Are my charms connected.
 * Where can access my service online?

To illustrate this I deployed two wordpress charms with mysql. This is
what 'juju status' gives me:

jono@forge:~$ juju status

I just took a few minutes to play with an alternative way of presenting
this information based upon the information I really care about (I think
all the detail shown above should be accessible with 'juju status -v').

I think this is a better way of displaying it:

jono@forge:~$ juju status

Overview:

   [All services started]

   wordpress/0: ec2-54-226-44-116.compute-1.amazonaws.com
   wordpress/1: ec2-54-226-44-116.compute-1.amazonaws.com
   mysql: ec2-54-226-45-46.compute-1.amazonaws.com

  3 (i-5a500d32) [STARTED]
Version:1.10.0
DNS:ec2-54-226-15-107.compute-1.amazonaws.com

The 'Overview' section tells me if everything is up and where to access
my things. The 'Topology' section makes it clear that everything is
connected. The 'Machines' section gives me details about the individual
machines, but I re-formatted these to highlight the status (I put all
status indications in square brackets in this mock-up).

I would strongly recommend we display this (or another improved)
simplified status as the default and show the detail with -v.

[Bug 1182905] [NEW] charm-tools requires extra environments.yaml config

2013-05-22 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

This is what happened to me:

 * Configured environments.yaml for AWS.

Switched to gojuju, created new environments.yaml and same issue with
first bootstrap:

jono@forge:~$ juju bootstrap
error: Get
https://s3.amazonaws.com/juju-dist/?marker=prefix=tools%2Fjuju-delimiter=:
remote error: handshake failure

Again, second bootstrap seems to work.

[Bug 1183116] [NEW] 'juju status' output when no env is non-intuitive

Public bug reported:

When I have just detroyed my environment (or have no environment) and
run 'juju status' I get:

This doesn't make any sense.

It should say something like this instead:

[Bug 1183129] [NEW] 'juju status' difficult to read and provides unneccessary information

2013-05-22 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

From using 'juju status' it provides me with a lot of detail, but most
of it I don't care about. I care about the following:

 * Are my machines up.
 * Are my charms connected.
 * Where can access my service online?

To illustrate this I deployed two wordpress charms with mysql. This is
what 'juju status' gives me:

jono@forge:~$ juju status
machines:

  wordpress/1:
agent-state: pending
agent-version: 1.10.0
machine: 3
public-address: ec2-54-226-15-107.compute-1.amazonaws.com

I just took a few minutes to play with an alternative way of presenting
this information based upon the information I really care about (I think
all the detail shown above should be accessible with 'juju status -v').

I think this is a better way of displaying it:

jono@forge:~$ juju status

Overview:

   [All services started]

   wordpress/0: ec2-54-226-44-116.compute-1.amazonaws.com
   wordpress/1: ec2-54-226-44-116.compute-1.amazonaws.com
   mysql: ec2-54-226-45-46.compute-1.amazonaws.com

  3 (i-5a500d32) [STARTED]
Version:1.10.0
DNS:ec2-54-226-15-107.compute-1.amazonaws.com
Series: precise

The 'Overview' section tells me if everything is up and where to access
my things. The 'Topology' section makes it clear that everything is
connected. The 'Machines' section gives me details about the individual
machines, but I re-formatted these to highlight the status (I put all
status indications in square brackets in this mock-up).

I would strongly recommend we display this (or another improved)
simplified status as the default and show the detail with -v.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2013-01-23 Thread jono
This bug is really annoying. Sufficiently annoying that I registered an
account on launchpad just to post this comment.

I just got upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 on a machine where have no root
access, so I can't hack any of the settings. It seems my only real
option is to abandon gnome and use a different window manager.

I normally see the icons on both screens (it was working before) and can
normally interact with the desktop on both screens too (e.g. dragging
icons there, saving icons to ~/Desktop and they appear there, selecting
icons there etc).

I will check the menu thing when I am next plugged into the screen.

2012-11-29 Thread Jono Bacon

[Bug 1084620] [NEW] Plugging in additional screen only shows desktop icons on one screen

2012-11-29 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

When plugging an external monitor into my laptop (and thus enabling dual
screens, not mirrored), I only see my desktop icons on the right screen
(left: external screen, right: laptop screen) and not on the left
(external) screen. See the screenshot attached.

Also, please note that I also experience a resolution bug - see

intel/+bug/1083790 - you can see this in the screenshot too.

[Bug 1083790] Re: Connecting external monitor shows incorrect resolution on external screen and correct resolution on laptop screen

xrandr --auto works to solve the resolution problem. I will check the
KVM box a little later when I amin front of the machine.

[Bug 1083790] [NEW] Connecting external monitor shows incorrect resolution on external screen and correct resolution on laptop screen

2012-11-27 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo T520 and a Samsung LED monitor running in dual-monitor
mode (not mirrored). I also use an IOGEAR 2 Port USB Cable KVM Switch
with Audio and Mic (GCS72U) to share the screen with another machine,
although it is almost always just selecting the Lenovo laptop with the
screen.

When I am using the laptop without the external monitor everything looks
great, but then when I plug the external monitor in the resolution on
the monitor is incorrect and is low resolution as well as the top panel
being cut off a little (see the attached screenshot). The resolution on
the laptop screen is correct and the dual monitor setting is correct
(external screen on the left, laptop screen on the right).

If I then load the displays applet in the Settings, the external monitor
switches to the correct resolution without me clicking on anything in
the displays applet (just loading it fixes the resolution).

I also noticed today that if I plug in the external monitor (and thus
see the incorrect resolution) and leave it without going to the displays
applet, if I leave it for around 3 - 5 mins it will automatically switch
to the correct resolution without me doing anything.

[Bug 1046840] Re: [UIFE][FFE] Install Amazon and Ubuntu One Music Store webapp items in the launcher by default

2012-09-20 Thread Jono Bacon
Jeremy, I think you have every right to be frustrated that this landed
after the Feature Freeze. From what I understand the reasons for this
were some staffing and technical issues, but the team felt the feature
would be valuable and useful for Ubuntu users and also generate revenue
to help support investment in the project.

To compensate for it being added late, we are pursuing further testing
(Nicholas Skaggs will be coordinating further manual testing) and Olli
has assured us that his team will be responsible in fixing and resolving
issues.

[Bug 1036455] Re: GTK Rendering Issue (potentially a ScrolledWindow problem)

2012-08-14 Thread Jono Bacon
Thanks for your efforts on this, Robert. I tested your new branch and it
works correctly here using the GtkGrid. There may stay be a bug present
though due to the original program I wrote displaying so differently on
Precise and on Quantal.

Strangely, when I used your code in my Ubuntu Accomplishments code to
resolve the issue, I still get space between the sections that I don't
want. It looks like this:

The branch is at lp:~jonobacon/ubuntu-accomplishments-viewer/spacingfix
and you can see the code for where the section is added at

[Bug 1036455] [NEW] GTK Rendering Issue (potentially a Scrolled problem)

2012-08-13 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

While hacking on Ubuntu Accomplishments I have noticed some strange
behavior with GTK. We added support to add a series of nested widgets,
one of which is an IconView, and we are getting different rendered
output on Precise and on Quantal.

To make this easier to demonstrate, I wrote lp:~jonobacon/+junk/gtkissue
- if you download this and run 'quickly run' to run it, you will see
this on Precise:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7115/807764_2849c23d1a_o.png

And you will see this on Quantal:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8288/814982_8ea437111b_o.png

It looks like on Quantal the the policy for scrolling is being
interpreted incorrectly and the horizontal scrollbar is being rendered.
The expected behavior is what I see on Precise.

[Bug 1036489] [NEW] Closing Rhythmbox doesn't close Rhythmbox and causes confusing key-binding behavior

2012-08-13 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

This is a problem I am experiencing in Quantal right now. Here is how to
trigger it:

 1. I load Pithos and start listening to music. My track change and start/pause
key-bindings work great.
 2. I load Rhythmbox to listen to a song on my computer. I stop Pithos playing
and start playing Rhythmbox.
 3. With two media players open my key-bindings only seem to apply to one
player, so I close Rhythmbox (clicking the X in the window).
 4. The window is not actually closed and my key-bindings still affect
Rhythmbox - this is confusing as I see no icon on my Launcher.

[Bug 1036455] Re: GTK Rendering Issue (potentially a ScrolledWindow problem)

2012-08-13 Thread Jono Bacon
One thing I have noticed here is that the space seems to be equally
divided up between the window. If you make the window wide and deep you
will see the second section starts at about half-way down the window.

[Bug 1031197] [NEW] DownloadFinished signal triggers when file has not yet completed writing

2012-07-30 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

I am experiencing a problem where I connect a callback to
DownloadFinished which then loads the file that has been downloaded.
Unfortunately this is failing even though I can see the file on the disk
- as such it looks like the signal triggers a short time before the file
has completed writing.

From what I understand the file is copied to a temp dir and then moved
and it seems this signal triggers when the file hits the temp dir. Can
you fix this so that it triggers when the file is successfully written
to its final path? Thanks!

[Bug 1025388] [NEW] Internal mic stops working when plugging in headphones

2012-07-16 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

I am currently running Quantal and when I plug headphones into my
headphone socket (which has an icon of a headset next to it, so I
presume it can take some kind of headset), the internal mic on my laptop
stops working. If I unplug the headphones the internal mic works as
normal.

I tried this with two different sets of headphones (one of which has a
mic, and the other I think has a mic too).

[Bug 965492] Re: Dash home results take too long to appear

2012-04-06 Thread Jono Bacon
@David - I am not sure I would agree. I think most users (bearing in
mind I have done no user testing)...will click the Ubuntu button as soon
as they have started their desktop, as that is where they find their
apps, files, music, video and other content.

Given that the user should rarely need to boot, I would personally
prefer if we take the hit on boot time to deliver a fast dash experience
when they click on the button.

[Bug 965492] Re: Dash home results take too long to appear

2012-04-04 Thread Jono Bacon
IS just showing a spinner going to be suitable enough? I think it is
still going to appear slugging - someone clicks on the dash icon and
nothing appears for four seconds is going to potentially frustrate a lot
of users.

Can we make the results appear quicker?

I am not talking about searching: I just mean when you first log in and
click on the dash it takes quite some time for the icons to appear.

[Bug 965483] Re: Album covers not displayed

2012-03-31 Thread Jono Bacon
In the latest packages in Precise I am not seeing the album covers.
David, are you running the packages that have not yet hit Precise and
hence seeing the fix where I am not?

[Bug 965492] [NEW] Dash home results take too long to appear

2012-03-26 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

When I start Unity and click on the dash (which I suspect many users
will do to find their applications, files etc), the home lens displays
nothing for a number of seconds which offers a confusing user
experience. If the results are unable to be displayed immediately (which
would be preferred), some kind of indicator of the results loading
should be displayed.
