Re: [Bug 1039247] Re: Resizing with mouse by clicking window edges is difficult, due to small borders

2013-12-05 Thread karl anliot
The openbox developers are insisting that the visual border size is the
same thing as the area you must position the mouse pointer over to drag.
On other platforms this isn't true. And in practice, increasing the visual
border size to a to a clickable size makes my windows look bad.

[Bug 1066167] [NEW] problems logging out, rebooting when using guest is logged in

2012-10-12 Thread karl anliot
Public bug reported:

fresh install of 12.10
login normally, but select "switch users" after logging in.

at this point I can cause two problems. Try rebooting the computer when
on the guest login. I get a error message, or a dialog that goes away
after showing briefly. IMHO the dialog should allow the guest to
reboot, but at the least, the dialog should be replaced by an
descriptive error.

a second problem is this:
login as user 1000. select switch users and login as a guest.
switch back to user 1000 with ctrl+alt+f7, and logout.
should not show black screen.

[Bug 738061] Re: Can't read an audio cd from pcmanfm on double click

2012-10-07 Thread karl anliot
1. I've tested pcmanfm with VLC and gnome-mplayer and smplayer, they all work
with pcmanfm. I think this bug should be closed.
2. this isn't the same as PCManFM launching the audio player when you insert
the disk. That would be a separate issue.

this bug isn't the same as the bug you marked this as a duplicate. This
bug involves the auto-open dialog in pcmanfm. that said, i think it's
probably a pcmanfm bug.

[Bug 1057980] [NEW] default theme displays unnumbered lists with numbers

2012-09-28 Thread karl anliot

I believe i'm using the "light" theme. You can see from my screenshot ( I am

that unnumbered lists display with numbers.

To fix this, unnumbered lists should display with a bullet point.

[Bug 1056096] [NEW] clicking below scrollbar button moves to % of document, not one page down

2012-09-25 Thread karl anliot
Public bug reported:

Normal scrollbars allow you to click below the scrollbar button to move the
view, 1 page. similarly, you can click above the button.
I can still scroll in LSC, but not in a normal way.
Additionally, the button on some pages is nearly too small to click on, when
there is a large list of software.

To fix this bug, change the scrolling back to normal

i think you're right that it's one of your installed packages causing
the focus problem, however I disagree that it could be caused by
Lubuntu-desktop. It simply doesn't happen here.

[Bug 1046563] Re: update-manager never appears on lubuntu precise

2012-09-12 Thread karl anliot
** Description changed:

i have upgraded to 12.04.1 and I've recently noticed that update-manager
no longer prompts to install updates. Previous to 12.04.1, it was
  mostly popping up every day.

To reproduce, run the cron script and see if update-manager comes up,
  which it won't.

to fix the bug, update-manager should show updates when they are
  available.

+ I believe that update-manager works properly on a default install of

[Bug 1046957] Re: "error during filesystem" turns off monitor, never comes back on

2012-09-06 Thread karl anliot
** Description changed:

- managed to get the monitor back on, it had this message "serious errors
- were found while checking the disk drive for /"
+ I've noticed that my monitor turns off at some point halfway during
+ booting. I ignored the problem, since they always turned back on until
+ now.
+
+ With 12.10 my monitor wasn't turnning back on. Eventually i managed to get
it turned back on with these steps, (nothing else worked)
+ 1. switch to the console ctrl+alt+f1 and turn off the monitor
+ 2. turn on the monitor
+ 3. switch back to the error with ctrl+alt+f7
+
+ at which point i realized had an error during booting. it looked much
+ like this error: http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/308/20110218153727.jpg
+
+ it had this message "serious errors were found while checking the disk
+ drive for /" which I later fixed by installing xfsprogs

but the actual problem is that my monitor is getting put in suspend mode
- or something similar and never comes back on to display the error. This
- is a problem, because there is no indication of anything bug a blank
- screen.
+ or "can't display this" mode and never comes back on to display the
+ error. This is a problem, because there is no indication of anything
+ bug a blank screen. It's a HDMI monitor.

I'm using an ATI 5750 card with a hanspree HF259H monitor. Should be
able to reproduce with any error on the splash screen.

[Bug 1046965] [NEW] ubiquity can't mount / on xfs

2012-09-06 Thread karl anliot
Public bug reported:

i booted to a livecd, and installed lubuntu on a xfs disk by using the manual
partitioner.
I used 1 xfs partition to mount /
The operation seemed to compelete successfully, but upon rebooting, all i could
see was an error about "serious erorrs were found while checking the disk drive
for /."

I managed to muck around in the fstab and fix the /etc/fstab file and the error
went away.
I did this by changing the last column in the line that mounts / from 1 to 0
to fix this bug, it should not write to the fstab incorrectly.

[Bug 1046563] [NEW] update-manager never appears on lubuntu precise

2012-09-05 Thread karl anliot
Public bug reported:

i have upgraded to 12.04.1 and I've recently noticed that update-manager
no longer prompts to install updates. Previous to 12.04.1, it was
mostly popping up every day.

To reproduce, run the cron script and see if update-manager comes up,
which it won't.

to fix the bug, update-manager should show updates when they are
available.

[Bug 1039405] Re: Lockups when running vm's with 768MB of memory

2012-08-24 Thread karl anliot
You might ask why you can't reproduce the behavior when running in a
debugger:

quoting Hugh Dickins of the kernel mailing list:
So, if the whole system is under memory pressure, kswapd will
be keeping the RSS of all tasks low, and they won't reach their
limits; whereas if the system is not under memory pressure,
tasks will easily approach their limits and so fail.

It's also a known behavior of the swapoff function. See this comment:

[Bug 1039405] [NEW] Lockups when running vm's with 768MB of memory

2012-08-21 Thread karl anliot
Public bug reported:

version tested: ubiquity 2.10.20 on 12.04.1 daily build.
$md5sum precise-desktop-amd64.iso
64cae667e6fde29ea86043ede5e79493 precise-desktop-amd64.iso

Reproducing:
setup a new KVM machine with 768 MB of ram. (because users were reporting
crashes with 768)

*after booting, select try Ubuntu
* start the installer, but not anything else.
* select "something else"
since the disk has no parition table, click to create a "new partition table
create an 888 megabyte swap at the end of the disk
create a 7701 M swap at the beginning of the disk.
Ubiquity crashes when clicking to the next screen.

you'll notice that the syslog has a: OSError: [Errno 12] Cannot allocate
memory.

To fix this bug, ubiquity should not be installing on PC's with too little RAM,
especially when crashes are so consistent.
Ubiquity should CLEARLY warn about crashes on low-ram machines.

here's the syslog and other stuff:
x@ubu:~$ pastebinit debug
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1158548/
x@ubu:~$ pastebinit partman
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1158549/
x@ubu:~$ pastebinit syslog
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1158550/
x@ubu:~$ pastebinit version
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1158551/
x@ubu:~$ cat version

[Bug 1039247] [NEW] Resizing with mouse by clicking window edges is difficult, due to small borders

2012-08-20 Thread karl anliot
Public bug reported:

I believe there is only 1 pixel to click on when resizing windows with the
mouse (clicking edge of the window) This has become rather painful for me.
Please allow me to "grab" nearby pixels.

There are workarounds such as increasing border size, but since KDE has
this feature, it's a very ugly workaround.

[Bug 1038248] [NEW] Ubiquity Should Check for required RAM before running, Provide helpful error

2012-08-17 Thread karl anliot
Public bug reported:

Ubiquity doesn't fail gracefully on older computers with low RAM. PC's
with 512 MB have problems with ubiquity's manual partitioner, or when
Ubiquity is run on a system without a swap partition. Ubiquity should
also check that the PC has enough RAM to install when running on the
LiveCD, which mounts 200-300MB of files into unrecoverable RAM.

Fedora's anaconda graphical installer has a feature that prevents out-
of-memory crashes from occuring, by having a configurable memory limit.

Having a descriptive error for this common condition would mean that
users trying Ubuntu for the first time would not be lost.

[Bug 1037344] [NEW] installation doesn't prompt for reboot after installing

2012-08-15 Thread karl anliot
Public bug reported:

installing with ubiquity, installation goes normally however, when
clicking "reboot now" the system doesn't reboot, but instead displays
"SYSTEM IS GOING DOWN FOR REBOOT NOW" and freezes. Pressing
control+alt+f7 takes me to a console with a different message.

Ubiquity should reboot the pc, even in a VM. I shouldn't have to much around
in the console.
To fix this bug, a consistent interface to the user should be presented.
