[Bug 1800809] [NEW] login screen is huge
Public bug reported: After login, screen resolution goes back to normal (1920X1080). But login screen is huge compare to the actual monitor. Because the login screen is too big to fit inside the display, I see only the upper left portion of the login screen (its like someone put a magnifying glass on the login screen and I can see only part of it). I have to move the mouse and then the user list in the login screen moves to the right and I can select my user. [Bug 1643997] Re: nvidia driver causes blank screen
I did another test: 1. I installed Linux Mint 18.0 (Sarah) which is based on Xenial (vanilla installation) 2. I updated the system (recommended updates) 3. Installed Nvidia driver 367.57 - system not broken ! everything works 4. installed Intel proprietary driver (it was in the additional drivers - intel-microcode (3.20151106.1) - Then the system broke again. 5. At this point I tended to believe that the problem was in the combination of intel-microdcode package and nvidia-367 package 6. I remember that Ubuntu 16.04 comes automatically installed with intel-microcode package, so I decided to expand my test. I reinstalled Ubuntu 16.04.1 fresh. 7. I updated the system (software update). 8. I removed intel-microcode usage (using the "additional drivers" option to disable that device) 9. reboot. 10. install nvidia-367 driver (from additional drivers) - reboot. 11. system is still broken (blank screen, can't reach login at all, no TTY, can't even ssh, even though openssh was installed). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1643997 Title: nvidia driver causes blank screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-367/+bug/1643997/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1643997] [NEW] nvidia driver causes blank screen
Public bug reported: I just installed ubuntu 16.04.1 64 bit (complete vanilla) 1. apt-get upgrade 2. apt-get dist-upgrade 3. install nvidia proprietary driver from "System settings -> Software & updates -> Additional Drivers" (current driver is 367.57- marked "proprietary, tested"). 4. reboot 5. blank screen as described above. I've modified grub with "nomodeset" - did not work. Removed "quiet, splash" - did not work add "set gfxpayload=text" - got some output to the screen, but not can't tell what it does and I have no idea where the data is stored - and then blank screen. disabled vesa frame buffer (vesafb.nonsense=1) - did not work My graphic HW: GTX 960 For now, I purged nvidia driver and the system is running well. I am sure the card is working properly because up until 3 days ago it had ubuntu 14.04 installed on it with nvidia driver active. Then there was an update which caused the same blank screen on 14.04. I decided to install 16.04 fresh (over the 14.04). I hoped the blank screen issue will disappear with 16.04, but it turns out it doesn't. If you need me to run some tests, I'll be more then happy to do so. I installed openssh-server on my machine, so I think I might be able to ssh into it from another machine while its in blank screen (did not test this). [Bug 941287] [NEW] cannot switch user from admin user
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 11.10 I have 4 users defined. One of the users has the admin privileges (able to sudo) and the rest are regular users. When logging in from a regular user, I am able to switch to a different user. When logging in from the admin user, after clicking the "switch user", the screen goes black (as if in screen saver) and then when I move the mouse, the screen returns to a "lock screen" screen (where I need to put the password for the admin user). If I try then to press the "switch user" button, the same things happens. After entering the password, I see a pop up window on the desktop: "Failed to unlock: The name org.gnome.DisplayManager was not provided by any .service files" The only way to login as a different user is first log out as the admin, then login as a different user. I tried the following: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop but the problem persists. I've just made some tests on the machine in which simple-scan is not working. It looks to be irregular behavior. The test goes like this: Try to scan 1 - fail. [Bug 172511] Re: complete system freeze - 2 glsgears test simultaneously.
Well ... now that I know my hardware is working properly, its time to go back to Gutsy. I spoke with my brother and he said that maybe this crash happens because I also have trouble with my wirreless driver on the laptop. He suggested to try a work around for the wireless and see if this work. The work around is to use ndis-wrapper tool to install the window driver for the wireless. I hope this works and the crashes will end. -- complete system freeze - 2 glsgears test simultaneously. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172511 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

During the weekend I did one more test (sad to say it ...) I reinstaled the Win Vista that came with the laptop. The test was made to make sure there is no hardware malefunction whatsoever. And as it turned out ... the hardware is fine. Working properly with Win Vista. [Bug 172511] Re: complete system freeze - 2 glsgears test simultaneously.
For the first question - I will check it. For the second question - The answer is yes. When the screen saver is set to blank screen, the system also freezes. Currently, I am doing a test to check for display driver defect. The previous driver was the intel experimental driver (comes with Gutsy). Now I am checking it with vesa driver. My test is very simple: I switched to vesa driver and I will let the computer run solo (no human interference) for 3 days (the entire weekend). If it won`t freezes, then I will have to start searching for a more stable driver. If it freezes ... I will be very sad. thank you for your help. -- complete system freeze - 2 glsgears test simultaneously. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172511 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ok. My apology. I cannot recreate the bug. The checked it for 3 consecutive times (each time running 2 GLXgears at the same time and each time I had to forcefully restart the system due to complete freezing). But now I checked it again and I was able to run 6 GLXgears without any problem. But the system still freezes after long period of idle (screensaver). [Bug 172511] complete system freeze - 2 glsgears test simultaneously.
Public bug reported: I finally was able to recreate the problem. My laptop is running Gutsy (though this problem also occurred with Fiesty). Every time the system was idle for several hours, with nothing but screen saver running, the system froze completely. No kbd/mouse/touchpad/ssh login from remote ... not even ping to the machine. I though it might be a heating problem, but it turned out not to. I checked it with a 3D game "TuxKart". I brought the system to 50 deg but still working. Then I tried to run 2 GLXGears simultaneously. I almost instantly caused the system to freeze (few seconds). Temperature at freezing point was 46 deg. I did that check several times. It still is the case. I saw a bug here related to large memory usage which causes the system to freeze, but I was not sure if this is the case. I am having the same problem on Gutsy as well. My screen saver is not set to "random", but to "popsqaures" (2D screen saver). I believe the machine is entering a sleep/suspend mode and cannot return from it (even though my power management is set to "never do anything"). I saw a similar problems with WinXP in the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923232 Since the system completely hangs I cannot track the exact package. I would like also to mention that the "system hangs" problem also occurred to me in 2 other occasions: 1. I installed the "bubbles" (or "pop bubbles" or something like that, through the "add/remove ..."). The system hangs completely, ALWAYS, after a while. 2. I installed the game "TuxKart" and the system sometimes hang (mostly not). -- Ubuntu 6.06 screen saver freezes and entire system hangs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107504 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 127599] Sound is not working at all - Ubuntu 7.0.4 - intel 82801CA-ICH3
Public bug reported: Hi, I recenetly reinstalled Ubuntu 7.04. At first, sound worked fine. After I installed all the updates (through the update manger), sound stopped completely, even though the sound card is recognized OK. The reason I reinstalled it was because the sound went dead the first time, and after I tried several suggestions (the last one included reinstalling the alsa package), I also lost GUI (and since I am quite a NB, I did not know what to do except for reinstalling UBUNTU) Hardware details: IBM thinkpad T23.
