Try ctrl-alt-f2 to open a terminal, and do a sudo apt-get install compiz
hope this works for you as it did for me.

One month after I experienced the same problem. May 26, 2010.
Is there a bug somewhere that triggers every 26th?

KMS radeon in Lucid
Again thanks pedro my Ubuntu Lucid is now working properly. Compiz got
uninstalled somewhere between updates. I just installed it and
everything is okay now.

Thanks Gabe. at least now I know I don't have to be turning on visual
effects but rather press alt-f2 then run metacity and all will be okay.

Public bug reported:
Hi, I updated my lucid beta 2 yesterday, and after restarting I noticed
nautilus and firefox windows don't have the close max, and min buttons
(the whole bar on top of the window like in netbook remix.) I also
notice firefox will not maximize using alt-spacebar x. nor will it
same on my acer travelmate 3210. I somehow have the feeling that it has
something to do with my touchpad. when I read your bug report I tested.
tap the touchpad and my keyboard stopped responding. then I tapped it
again the keyboard started responding again.

Did anybody try to disable compiz and run to opengl apps at the same
time if the tearing and blinking still occurs? like maybe google earth
and glxgears without compiz?

I tried what you have instructed me to do, but my /var/crash directory is
empty. even if I ls -a, or show hidden files in nautilus. Is it possible
that something in bash would make the terminal issue an exit command?

I believe I am using gnome terminal. On Ubuntu Hardy,
System - Preferences - Main Menu
Under system tools I enabled the 'Root Terminal'
Then Under
Applications - System Tools
I click Root Terminal.
Then I issue the command:

the prompt changes to:

I have changed my menu to include the open terminal as root.
The command used by the menu shortcut is gksu /usr/bin/x-terminal-
emulator
Just for fun I key-in sudo su and then my password.
after which I press 'e' this closes the terminal.

That's good at least we agree on that. so how do we report this
upstream?

I also have the same message every time I hibernate my ubuntu - Hardy. I
am using Acer TM3210 using fglrx 8.522. The thing is that sometimes
hibernate works fine and sometimes it restarts and I have to go through
the process of scanning my disks for error. :) If you need any other
information
I also have difficulty finding answers to this question as I don't know
if it has any answers already. I am currently running fglrx 8.522 just
installed yesterday on an ACER TM 3210. Kindly check the picture if that
is the same problem you mean. Thanks.
I am willing to give more info but I don't
Did you check if you are connected to your internet provider? Are you
using wireless or wired connection? Sometimes roaming mode in wireless
gives me headache especially if I connect to a wireless network with
DHCP off and is WEP protected. The Signal bar turns blue but if I right
click that icon
