[Bug 1769346] Re: Unable to install 18.04 server AMD64 with targeted kernel: initramfs-tools
I fixed this error by updating my BIOS. Weird - I didn't have this issue with prior versions including 16.04.4 but when I also tried 16.04.4, I got the same problem. I might have been using an earlier 16.04.x where this wasn't an issue. [Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope
If a person is really interested in getting something done, he will always find a route, but if he is not interested, he will always bring up an excuse. -- Anonymous. Suggested apps and recently used should be divided. Whomever coded it like that clearly wasn't thinking long term and now is not compatible with smart scopes and the home lens. Apps are the main selling point of any OS, so they should always be prioritized. Not trying to impose any opinions here. [Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope
@Pawel Stolowski (stolowski) Hi, I don't think you understood correctly. This not about suggestions included in the home lens all the time. The topic at hand is Search results. They are not smart because they're not returning anything useful to the user when you type in Steam, Gimp, chromium, etc. Smart scopes right now is only returning A LOT of irrelevant stuff with these searches, so, confusing more the user / consumer. This totally goes against the spec: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SmartScopes1304Spec Rationale The driving factors behind the changes are the continual improvement of the Dash as a place for surfacing useful content, whether it’s local or remote, and a desire to take advantage of the amazing work done by contributors in building up a large amount of Scopes for the Dash. The features break down as: Ability for the Home Master Scope to show a mixture of ranked results from the: default scopes some of the installed scopes remote scopes (scopes run on the server) The Dash gathering and posting metrics to the Smart Scopes Service, so we can produce better results for queries. The Smart Scopes Service being able to give ranked list of Scopes to present to the user. The goal of the 100 Scopes project and of Ubuntu in general is to provide lots and lots of scopes, and there should be lots and lots more in the future for every data source that anyone might want. These scopes should all be in Ubuntu and ready to surface appropriate content in the Dash. The Ubuntu experience would be compromised if all those scopes were running all the time, though; the goal of the Smart Scopes project is to intelligently decide, for a given query, which scopes are likely to be most relevant to that query so that those scopes can be chosen to be started and return results. Users can of course explicitly choose scopes that they want used in the query to override the suggestions from the Smart Scopes service. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1196051 Title: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-scope-home/+bug/1196051/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@alanbell Am not very familiar with a11y, but i believe this is for general usability (sorting).. For example I live in a 3rd world country so my internet is very slow and unfortunately metered too, I cant just go and hit install All updates. I check which ones are worth it and I sort by size (mb), name, etc. So I can only do so with synaptic, since update manager doesnt have sorting and trying to find packages by size was worsening my RSI issues. [Bug 732526] Re: Dash - Drag and drop app install from App Lens to Launcher is broken
When searching from the dash for example Skype and is not installed I don't get the recommendations to install it from the apps available for download in the home/main lens. I only get an empty search. But when I do the same in the Apps-lens you do get the recommendations. Searching directly from the home lens makes this functionality more discoverable and is a great alternative to using the terminal and apt- get on slower computers and not have to always wait for USC to open (unless you want to read more info.) Should another bug be open for this or is already in the plans to add this functionality to the main/home lens? It would also be preferable not to show the apps available for download in the home-lens by default, but only on Searches since the recommendations become more relevant and much better than getting no results. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/732526 Title: Dash - Drag and drop app install from App Lens to Launcher is broken To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/732526/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 874254] Re: top bar, integrated menu - when a application is first launched, the integrated menu should be displayed for 2 seconds before fading out of view
I think the motive was good: make it more discoverable. but those 2 seconds go extremely fast... i know where it is and even i miss it (yes even by staring at it). the problem is when a window opens people focus their eyes on the window and not the top bar. When they focus the top bar the 2 seconds already passed so a few solutions might be: -increase the second amount. -visible again for a couple of seconds when you restore a window. or -confirm the user knows where it is, by keeping it visible for a while or till the first time the user hovers on it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874254 Title: top bar, integrated menu - when a application is first launched, the integrated menu should be displayed for 2 seconds before fading out of view To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/874254/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 876146] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu is risky (unusable or unbootable PC). What can be done to safeguard data, revert failed upgrades and overall reduce the risks?
Apart from recommending the user to backup the files that matter to them. Another thing that is important and should be recommended is for the user to try/test the new ubuntu version first. And this can only be done right now with a disc or usb stick. So if you insert a disc/usb one can be automatically created for you. Once the user has tested the new version and verified everything works and the performance is still acceptable on their hardware, then they can choose to install/upgrade, right there from the disc/stick. I think testing it first avoids some headaches and wasted-time by having to revert everything back to a previous state/version later on. Sure, You can still upgrade without doing the recommended steps of testing and backing up, but do so at your risk, only if you know what you're doing and have experienced to fix potential problems yourself. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876146 Title: Upgrading Ubuntu is risky (unusable or unbootable PC). [Bug 876146] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu is risky (unusable or unbootable PC). What can be done to safeguard data, revert failed upgrades and overall reduce the risks?
Oh wow. Everyone seems to be virtually at full capacity, but since this is still very important I think that the implementation will need to be As Simple As Possible for now and then refine or automate it more later when there's a little more resources available. Well I believe the most important thing to remind users is for them to backup the files that matter to them. Be it to a External-disk or Online (U1). Their stuff is now safeguarded in case that something unexpected happens. As for restoring, I don't see a problem of doing it manually for now. And usually when people restore they dont copy everything over since they see the backup as another safe place to keep a lot of their stuff. As for restoring the Apps i think USC has a sync feature ? But Am not very familiar with that implementation yet. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876146 Title: Upgrading Ubuntu is risky (unusable or unbootable PC). [Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens
@pedro actually i think you were confusing the various designs. The one in comment #106 is persistent on button click (button could be small windicator or app name, not the full titlebar itself). Mousing over the title bar could create false positives in this design. Mouse over is only good if its non persistent like on earlier suggestions, but that has it's own set of pros/cons. The persistent design seems to be the suggestion with less cons overall from most of the feed gathered. @mmiicc (mpredotka) I believe those are still mockups, but it gives hope ! :) not sure which will be the final options yet. But it could be something like this: [X] Menu always integrated in top bar (global menu On) [X] Integrated with individual windows (global menu Off) [X] Global menu On + Button can toggle menu visibility in individual windows (combo) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682788 Title: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/682788/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 765819] Re: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives
@danillo well a tab is not a bad idea and would be tablet/finger friendly too. not sure if it has to overlap apps. Maybe it could have it's own vertical space on the side (as suggested on comment #9; which would also serve to show where the alerts generated) and the tab could be more compact and overlap less. another thing that would be useful is being able to pin it (again tablet friendly) and toggle the visibility to always visible and unpin to go back to intelli-hide. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765819 Title: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/765819/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 765819] Re: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives
Please keep in mind that this is not just a problem of particular programs like Firefox or Chrome. E.g. when using a regular terminal in full screen mode, it is impossible to mark lines for copy/paste if you want to mark them from the leftmost column. i agree. A simple solution might be to move the launcher to the right instead of the left window side, which seems to be less important. Furthermore, a toolbar at the left side is not really ergonomic, since most people are right handers and thus prefer buttons, handles etc. on the right side. hmm, right side might suffer even more from false positives when manipulating the scrollbar.
