[Bug 1769346] Re: Unable to install 18.04 server AMD64 with targeted kernel: initramfs-tools

2018-05-16 Thread Manny Flores
I fixed this error by updating my BIOS. Weird - I didn't have this issue
with prior versions including 16.04.4 but when I also tried 16.04.4, I
got the same problem. I might have been using an earlier 16.04.x where
this wasn't an issue. But again, in the end, the BIOS did the trick.

2018-05-14 Thread Manny Flores
Confirming that I get this same error on a fresh new install of 18.04
server. Not sure why there's a reference to i386 since this is a 64-bit
server installation.

error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.

The same problem was reported by others:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/946624/libreoffice-writer-will-not-open
https://askubuntu.com/questions/927859/libreoffice-writer-crashes-on-start

The problem persists after I reinstalled libreoffice (remove, install,
update, autoremove,upgrade-full).

The lowriter command only displays the launch dialog. No error messages
are displayed.

Start libreoffice writer from:

The libreoffice writer initial dialog is displayed.
After the dialog indicates "100% complete", the dialog closes.
Then, the writer application opens a blank document or the selected document.

4) What happened instead is...

(All in step 3 above until: After the dialog indicates "100% complete", the
dialog closes).

But, the writer crashes or fails to start.
The writer does not open.
There are no error messages or dialogs displayed.

The problem does not occur with the other libreoffice applications

[Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope

2013-10-19 Thread manny
If a person is really interested in getting something done, he will always
find a route, but if he is not interested, he will always bring up an excuse.
-- Anonymous.

Suggested apps and recently used should be divided. Whomever coded it
like that clearly wasn't thinking long term and now is not compatible
with smart scopes and the home lens.

Apps are the main selling point of any OS, so they should always be
prioritized. The smart scopes was suppose to threat online results as
if they were local, so App results should be there.

the scopes were suppose to help a new consumer, not confuse them even
more.

I hope the same mistake doesn't get done into Unity 8.

[Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope

2013-10-19 Thread manny
Not trying to impose any opinions here.

The specs clearly state, what the rationale of the smart scopes project
is.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SmartScopes1304Spec

The roadblock seems to be that the old stuff is kinda hard coded, so is
not such a trivial fix.

I never expected this to get done right away, but there's still a long
road ahead to make the smart scopes results as useful as it was
envisioned.

Even if you keep putting up excuses of an outdated design choice, you
will still need to find ways to fix all those irrelevant dash results.

Else the dumb-scopes is useless at is current stage.

Good luck!

[Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope

2013-10-16 Thread manny
@Pawel Stolowski (stolowski)

Hi, I don't think you understood correctly.

This not about suggestions included in the home lens all the time.

The topic at hand is Search results. They are not smart because
they're not returning anything useful to the user when you type in
Steam, Gimp, chromium, etc.

Smart scopes right now is only returning A LOT of irrelevant stuff with
these searches, so, confusing more the user / consumer.

This totally goes against the spec:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SmartScopes1304Spec

Rationale
The driving factors behind the changes are the continual improvement of the
Dash as a place for surfacing useful content, whether it’s local or remote, and
a desire to take advantage of the amazing work done by contributors in building
up a large amount of Scopes for the Dash.

The features break down as:

Ability for the Home Master Scope to show a mixture of ranked results from the:
default scopes
some of the installed scopes
remote scopes (scopes run on the server)
The Dash gathering and posting metrics to the Smart Scopes Service, so we can
produce better results for queries.
The Smart Scopes Service being able to give ranked list of Scopes to present to
the user.
The goal of the 100 Scopes project and of Ubuntu in general is to provide lots
and lots of scopes, and there should be lots and lots more in the future for
every data source that anyone might want. These scopes should all be in Ubuntu
and ready to surface appropriate content in the Dash. The Ubuntu experience
would be compromised if all those scopes were running all the time, though; the
goal of the Smart Scopes project is to intelligently decide, for a given query,
which scopes are likely to be most relevant to that query so that those scopes
can be chosen to be started and return results. Users can of course explicitly
choose scopes that they want used in the query to override the suggestions from
the Smart Scopes service.

[Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope

2013-10-07 Thread manny
** Description changed:

No useful (or smart) search results returned for apps not currently
installed, i.e. Steam, Gimp, etc. to the Home-Scope. However, the apps-
  scope already has this implemented.

Fix needed: Add useful software center results also to the home-scope as
per the goal to make the dash searches smart.

  ---

  original report:
clean install of saucy, searched for chromium, banshee, etc. on either of
these a Info icon for wikipedia is shown or chromium bookmarks was shown but
not the application itself.

[Bug 1222602] Re: [gen3] Bad performance on GMA950 and GMA3150

2013-09-28 Thread manny
I have this problem, but I've also seen the UI freezing or locking up
(most of the time) when you minimize applications. If you press Alt +
Ctrl + Del and get the shutdown diag, it goes back to normal.

I wonder if it's part of the same bug or a different one?

[Bug 1222602] Re: [gen3] Bad performance on GMA950 and GMA3150

2013-09-28 Thread manny
@Colin Law

Ok, thanks.

I was able to confirm the lockups happening also on an AMD/ATI laptop.

However, I get much more lockups on the Intel.

So anyone else experienced this or reported it? Else I'll go my way and
report this soon.

@HerbCSO

Actually I think they might be working on a fix to this indirectly with
Mir, just like wayland is trying to do.

So maybe this bug (or a new bug) should get attached to Mir so they
don't forget to test it.

nice! I saw this feature like a year ago by another developer:

There also seems to be a patch for truncating the titles (in the
comments).

will definitely improve the workflow.

well good news that they might ditch the point releases for a rolling or

sounds very much like they could do it like chakra does:

I will help promote this now that is accepting patches (sorry can't code

Would be also helpful if it also gets tagged or added to a proposals

[Bug 1032611] [NEW] Installation of 12.10 did NOT complete - no failure details displayed to user.

2012-08-03 Thread Manny Fernandez
Public bug reported:

Started install from a USB Flash. Installed Ubuntu installation to it
using NetBootin on the Windows side (latest download - checked that
before proceeding). Selected the daily distribution (instead of 12.04 -
which does not run on my laptop - the destination system). Subject
computer is a Dell D810 laptop with 2G installed and a 320G HD split 2/3
to Windows XP and 1/3 to Linux (including the swap space - 5G). Note:
the Windows XP installation was first with drive pre-partitioned for
Linux and Windows ahead of time (using gparted). Also created the
standard Dell diagnostic partition prior to installation of operating
system(s). FYI.

Reading instructions regarding requested files: Not familiar with
available options inside installer to complete these instructions.

[Bug 1006145] Re: Logitech Mouse not recognised on boot in 12.04

2012-06-09 Thread Manny Fernandez
@Oost: Hello. Thanks, but issue is not corrected. Did the fix as
directed and rebooted; mouse and keyboard were inoperative until I
unplugged and re-connected the Logitech dongle. Caveat: only tried it
once, however, the fault does not occur 100% of the time but about 50%
to 75% of boot iterations (before your suggested fix). I will keep the
fix in and see if frequency changes. Note here: I am knowledgeable
enough to be dangerous, but am not a systems programmer or a Linux guru.
I mess with operating systems (sort of). Thanks again.

[Bug 1006145] Re: Logitech Mouse not recognised on boot in 12.04

2012-06-08 Thread Manny Fernandez
Hello,
Have a Logitech mk550 wireless combo mouse/keyboard. Works with BIOS and
bootup and Windows. About 50-75% of the time have to remove and reconnect
dongle to get keyboard and mouse at ubuntu boot 12.04.

Have a Dell Vostro 400 with an Intel processor.

Please advise if you require more information.

Thanks.

[Bug 876146] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu is risky (unusable or unbootable PC). What can be done to safeguard data, revert failed upgrades and overall reduce the risks?

  ===Description:

Lots of angry users with broken computers that need rescue...

The friendly Upgrade popup has become a mouse trap for new and
  unsuspecting users.

Warnings and fail-safe alternatives and/or advise should be offered.
Specially for users who cant risk having their computers broken (only
have 1 OS). Nor have the knowledge, will, time and patience to fix
  something like this.

I think this should be Critical for Precise pangolin as the number of
users upgrading will be in the Tens if not hundreds of thousands (or
millions...), since this will be the new LTS.

  ===Initial proposal:

  See comment #10:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/876146/comments/10

===Other related helpers for the upgrade problem:

-There is no feedback and reporting tool to count the number of bad
upgrades and their related causes. Users should be able to give
immediate feedback after every upgrade (successful or not). Ubuntu-bug
upgrade-report on startup after an upgrade and a section on launchpad
  or dedicated site.

-Update/upgrade manager should offer an auto-backup wizard to safe guard
important user files to another partition, external storage or online
  (See comment #10).

-Also separate branches for testing and a better release process/cycle would
certainly help diminish the amount of bugs and many upgrade problems as it has
been discussed here:
  http://netsplit.com/2011/09/08/new-ubuntu-release-process/

Add extra info, also messaging menu (indicator-messages)

** Description changed:

The option for setting up accounts like facebook is disturbing. The term
broadcast account is not clear for new user.

+
+
+
+ This was pointed out in a Canonical's user study about the top

+
+ http://design.canonical.com/2010/06/when-new-users-first-encounter-
+ ubuntu-5-show-stoppers/
+
+ 3. Use of jargon
+
+ During their exploration of Ubuntu, participants encountered words they
+ didn’t know, or didn’t expect, or terms that they had no use for:
+ examples included ‘Gwibber’,’broadcast’,’terminal’ and ‘server’. “You
+ lose me with ‘terminal’ and ‘server’.” one person said.
+
+ The use of such specialised language significantly influenced how users
+ perceived the brand and the intended audience for Ubuntu. Some of the
+ participants wondered whether Ubuntu was meant really for expert users
+ rather than for them.

[Bug 962265] Re: Unity in 12.04 is impossible to use by a newbie because of the empty Dash at start

2012-03-25 Thread manny
@cont3mpo

i like the home lens, files are also important, the issue is that its
empty at start so user has no idea what it does.

- it could show some apps by default and have a permanent icon more
apps at the end of the row, that switches to apps lens.

-permanent icon more files at the end of the row switches to files
lens.

-permanent downloads folder icon at the end of the row to open downloads
in nautilus.

@Danillo

your mockup is very similar to the oxygen-appmenu (which was the
inspiration for LIM)

http://www.webupd8.org/2011/11/oxygen-appmenu-replace-menu-with.html

It needs to be clear that the area is clickable just like in the kde
counterpart (or like firefox or opera do it.).

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2012-03-13 Thread manny
While LIM is a great advancement to solving this bug, but some people
don't seem convinced yet.

So from all the feedback from various discussions (here and on unity-
design), I can only conclude that an alternative worth exploring could
be something combined from these 2 proposals:

http://musl1m.deviantart.com/art/Windicators-well-sort-of-203350326

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/682788/comments/106

Is still local and integrated, so it might be called LIM2.

to be fair and not a biased decision, a poll would be nice to see which
one users prefer: prototype LIM1 or prototype LIM2.

[Bug 878203] Re: Accesibility: Make update list sortable and add option to select/deselect all like in other update managers or synaptic

2012-03-06 Thread manny
@alanbell

Am not very familiar with a11y, but i believe this is for general
usability (sorting)..

For example I live in a 3rd world country so my internet is very slow
and unfortunately metered too, I cant just go and hit install All
updates.

I check which ones are worth it and I sort by size (mb), name, etc. So I
can only do so with synaptic, since update manager doesnt have sorting
and trying to find packages by size was worsening my RSI issues.

I have to go and install synaptic just for this.

In windows, mac, and most linux distros sorting is possible in their
respective update managers (as you can see in the pics).

As far as remembering the dash size (windowed or full screen), that is

[Bug 732526] Re: Dash - Drag and drop app install from App Lens to Launcher is broken

2012-02-18 Thread manny
When searching from the dash for example Skype and is not installed I
don't get the recommendations to install it from the apps available for
download in the home/main lens. I only get an empty search.

But when I do the same in the Apps-lens you do get the recommendations.

Searching directly from the home lens makes this functionality more
discoverable and is a great alternative to using the terminal and apt-
get on slower computers and not have to always wait for USC to open
(unless you want to read more info.)

Should another bug be open for this or is already in the plans to add
this functionality to the main/home lens?

It would also be preferable not to show the apps available for
download in the home-lens by default, but only on Searches since the
recommendations become more relevant and much better than getting no
results.

[Bug 874254] Re: top bar, integrated menu - when a application is first launched, the integrated menu should be displayed for 2 seconds before fading out of view

2012-02-08 Thread manny
I think the motive was good: make it more discoverable.

but those 2 seconds go extremely fast...

i know where it is and even i miss it (yes even by staring at it).

the problem is when a window opens people focus their eyes on the window
and not the top bar. When they focus the top bar the 2 seconds already
passed

so a few solutions might be:

-increase the second amount.

-visible again for a couple of seconds when you restore a window.

or

-confirm the user knows where it is, by keeping it visible for a while
or till the first time the user hovers on it.

[Bug 876146] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu is risky (unusable or unbootable PC). What can be done to safeguard data, revert failed upgrades and overall reduce the risks?

2012-01-28 Thread manny
Apart from recommending the user to backup the files that matter to
them.

Another thing that is important and should be recommended is for the
user to try/test the new ubuntu version first.

And this can only be done right now with a disc or usb stick.

So if you insert a disc/usb one can be automatically created for you.

Once the user has tested the new version and verified everything works
and the performance is still acceptable on their hardware, then they can
choose to install/upgrade, right there from the disc/stick.

I think testing it first avoids some headaches and wasted-time by having
to revert everything back to a previous state/version later on.

Sure, You can still upgrade without doing the recommended steps of
testing and backing up, but do so at your risk, only if you know what
you're doing and have experienced to fix potential problems yourself.

[Bug 876146] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu is risky (unusable or unbootable PC). What can be done to safeguard data, revert failed upgrades and overall reduce the risks?

2012-01-27 Thread manny
Oh wow. Everyone seems to be virtually at full capacity, but since this
is still very important I think that the implementation will need to be
As Simple As Possible for now and then refine or automate it more
later when there's a little more resources available.

Well I believe the most important thing to remind users is for them to
backup the files that matter to them. Be it to a External-disk or
Online (U1).

Their stuff is now safeguarded in case that something unexpected
happens.

As for restoring, I don't see a problem of doing it manually for now.
And usually when people restore they dont copy everything over since
they see the backup as another safe place to keep a lot of their stuff.

As for restoring the Apps i think USC has a sync feature ? But Am not
very familiar with that implementation yet.

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2012-01-08 Thread manny
@pedro

actually i think you were confusing the various designs. The one in
comment #106 is persistent on button click (button could be small
windicator or app name, not the full titlebar itself). Mousing over the
title bar could create false positives in this design. Mouse over is
only good if its non persistent like on earlier suggestions, but that
has it's own set of pros/cons. The persistent design seems to be the
suggestion with less cons overall from most of the feed gathered.

@mmiicc (mpredotka)

I believe those are still mockups, but it gives hope ! :)

not sure which will be the final options yet. But it could be something
like this:

[X] Menu always integrated in top bar (global menu On)
[X] Integrated with individual windows (global menu Off)
[X] Global menu On + Button can toggle menu visibility in individual windows
(combo)

[Bug 765819] Re: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives

2012-01-02 Thread manny
@danillo

well a tab is not a bad idea and would be tablet/finger friendly too.

not sure if it has to overlap apps. Maybe it could have it's own
vertical space on the side (as suggested on comment #9; which would also
serve to show where the alerts generated) and the tab could be more
compact and overlap less.

another thing that would be useful is being able to pin it (again
tablet friendly) and toggle the visibility to always visible and unpin
to go back to intelli-hide.

would also add that having a visible cue like a tab makes it more
intuitive.

[Bug 765819] Re: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives

2011-12-26 Thread manny
Please keep in mind that this is not just a problem of particular
programs like Firefox or Chrome. E.g. when using a regular terminal in
full screen mode, it is impossible to mark lines for copy/paste if you
want to mark them from the leftmost column.

i agree.

A simple solution might be to move the launcher to the right instead of
the left window side, which seems to be less important. Furthermore, a
toolbar at the left side is not really ergonomic, since most people are
right handers and thus prefer buttons, handles etc. on the right side.

hmm, right side might suffer even more from false positives when
manipulating the scrollbar.
