[Bug 710412] Re: Does Not Display Graphics in PDF Files (needs to build with openjpeg)

2017-11-19 Thread martinwguy
Since my 2017-11-06 upgrade of evince* from 3.18.2-1ubuntu4.1 to
3.18.2-1ubuntu4.2 ,it's doing the same to me. It prints graphics as
blank pages. That said, "Document viewer" is doing the same thing so
maybe someone broke an underlying library. Only GIMP manages to print
it, it seems.

Try "Print preview" on the attached.

@toddcarnes: You're right, boilerplate "Glad to be of service" messages
are lame and suck.

[Bug 1185815] Re: impossible to launch lv2rack

2017-10-27 Thread martinwguy
Weird. I launched this program successfully once (the first time i ever ran
it), the GUI presented itself, it appeared in qjackctl->Connect->Audio and then
jammed when I tried to load an effect because
https://guitarix.sourceforge.io/plugins/gxtuner#tuner
returns 404, and it blocked at that point.

Now, at every attempt I get the same "flex scanner jammed" as per this bug,
even if I
rm -r ~/.cache/lv2rack/

Cannot load LASH python bindings, you want LASH unless you enjoy manual jack
plumbing each time you use this app

[Bug 1635920] Re: intone fails to create a window, solved by installing libevas1-engines-x

2016-10-24 Thread martinwguy
libevas1-engines-x is in the Recommmends: list, and it didn't work for
me because I have Install-Recommends turned off in /etc/apt/apt.conf

For normal users it should work OK.

There's an argument to say that it should be required not recommended,
but upstream it's the same way. I'll take it up with them.

[Bug 1635920] [NEW] intone fails to create a window, solved by installing libevas1-engines-x

2016-10-22 Thread martinwguy
Public bug reported:

You can install intone and run it, but it does nothing, saying on the
console output:

CRI<25359>:elementary elm_win.c:2858 _win_constructor() Software X11 engine
creation failed. Trying default.
ERR<25359>:elementary elm_win.c:2994 _win_constructor() Cannot create window.
...

This is solved by installing package libevas1-engines-x after which it
works fine.

[Bug 1587215] [NEW] timidity crackles during the first second of output

2016-05-30 Thread martinwguy
Public bug reported:

Timidity burps half a dozen random samples at random moments during the
first second of output.

Attached is an example MIDI file demonstrating the bug: a single note on
the default instrument (Grand Piano). Just say "timidity note.mid"

The Debian bug report is
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=693011#17
an includes a one-line fix, replacing one > by >=

I have tested this fix compiling Ubuntu sources and it works.

This is present in timidity 2.13.2-40.3, from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04
The bug has been fixed upstream in their 2.14.0 release but Debian has not
updated to this version yet, not even in unstable.

As this bug makes timidity useless for any serious work, another
solution would be to apply the bug fix to 2.13.2, thereby repairing
everyone's existing systems next time they upgrade...

[Bug 518480] Re: NM prompts for password, doesn't accept it - Huawei E172 3G

2011-12-07 Thread martinwguy
I was affected by and resolved this bug in my system. The cause was
that I hadn't done the 15E-per-month top-up that the contract required.

The fix was to pay the 15E, then I had to delete the network connection
and recreate it before it went back to working.

The error message is confusing, yes.

I attach the syslog extract from an unsuccessful attempt yesterday to
connect exhibiting thid behaviour. In the next comment I will attach an
extract from a successful one today. Each extract runs from insertion of
the device to me prodding it to connect, to the session failure or
successful connection.

The Password window seems to be triggered by the provider failing the CHAP
negotiation - see line 103 of the unsuccessful log.
However, it may not be possible to do anything different, other than simply
drop the password window completely. Tha would fix this bug (simply failing
the connection without giving a bogus reason why) but may cause breakage for
people who don't want to store passwords and prefer to type them in every time.

[Bug 519729] Re: rezound doesn't work with ALSA

2011-07-25 Thread martinwguy
This is a result of non-bug #579300, which was fixed in maverick
thereby breaking a load of audio packages.

For rezound there is a workaround_ use jack.

First install the package qjackctl

then launch Applications-SoundVideo-QjackCtl
hit its Start button
now launch Applications-SoundVideo-Rezound

[Bug 688377] Re: cannot access /dev/dsp: No such file or directory

2011-03-01 Thread martinwguy
This breakage was caused by a fix to bug #579300
See bug #716814 for an attempt to get them to unbreak this.
Meanwhile, there are linux image packages which re-enable OSS compat for amd64
and i386 attached to the comments of the first bug.

[Bug 716814] Re: Please re-enable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2011-03-01 Thread martinwguy
Thanks for the automatic reply.

However, this bug is not dependent on the users' config and setup, since it was
introduced system-wide in maverick by disabling OSS_COMPAT in the kernel for
maverick, thereby breaking dozens of programs that use OSS.
See bug #579300 and its comments to see how unpopular this decision was with
users.

2011-01-10 Thread martinwguy
 2) Since there is no plausible technical reason for disabling OSS, we
must look elsewhere for the explanation.

This kind of thing, deprecating usually serves a psychological need of
developers/managers, as a way of trying to eliminate something they see
as evil, for whatever strange reason. We've seen it in GCC, breaking
existing code, and (amazingly!) the newer ARM instruction sets.

It serves no purpose for the users of Ubuntu, having no effect whatever,
except that of breaking half the software.

You remember how, in Toy Story 2, the penguin's voice box was broken? I
saw it as a wry comment on Linux-based systems (on which the film was
rendered) and how the audio support has been so flaky in the past. This
decision renews that tradition... just when you thought audio had
started working...

[Bug 451215] [NEW] Proxim RangeLAN-DS 8340 wireless PCMCIA card broken with default hostap_cs, but orinoco_cs works fine

2009-10-14 Thread martinwguy
Public bug reported:

This wireless PCMCIA card does not work out of the box with Ubuntu 9.04.

However, if you blacklist hostap_cs and include orinoco_cs in
/etc/modules it works perfectly.

Further details, including dmesg output for the failing and working drivers,
are available on the wiki page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Device/Proxim%20RangeLAN-DS
of which the following is a copy

-8

Proxim RangeLAN-DS is an 80211.b PCMCIA card, which on the reverse also
calls itself PC CARD 8430, FCC ID: M4Y-XI-300 and says F/W Rev.:
0.7.6. There is a firmware upgrade available to 0.8.3 which I have
applied, available at http://www.goonda.org/archive/wireless/prism2

Breakage

It doesn't work out of the box with Ubuntu 9.04. The graphical interface
doesn't show it at all. It's based on the Prism 2.5 chipset and by
default Ubuntu 9.04 loads kernel modules hostap and hostap_cs,
presents two wireless interfaces wifi0 and wlan0, associates these
with the wrong ESSID (it should be SKY93819 but iwconfig says it has
associated both interfaces with SKY93819c, and it fails to get an IP
address.

lspci doesn't say anything about the card and shows no change when it is
plugged in.

Fixes

To fix it, create /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-hostap.conf containing:

# Make Proxim RangeLAN-DS 8340 wireless card work by using orinoco_cs driver.
# See also /etc/modules
blacklist hostap_cs

then edit /etc/modules and append the line

orinoco_cs

Now reboot and it'll appear in the usual wireless configurator.

Detail

The dmesg output for the non-working default hostap_cs driver says:

[ 218.960052] pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into

[Bug 272205] Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27, Toshiba ATI IXP SB4x0

2009-09-29 Thread martinwguy
This Acer 3050 laptop was silent when using the live desktop CD of 9.04 until I
realised that I had to go into alsamixer, move to the Surround column, unmute
it and turn its volume up. Quite why it should need this...?
lcpci says:
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB4x0 High Definition Audio
Controller (rev 01)
and it's using kernel module snd_hda_intel
