I can also confirm that using the 275.09.04 drivers package from the philip5 ppa resolved the various issues for me too. In fact it seems to work remarkably well. No more nasty screen artefacts, no more random crashes from gnome-terminal or gedit. Whilst I still maintain that NVIDIA was very slow
