Solved. The installer has a bug.
I have a separate boot partition which the installer did not mount or
perhaps unmounted (it is in /etc/fstab)
Anyway:
* The new kernel was installed in the mountpoint directory.
* The initrd image was missing from the grub menu.lst
* The hd(0,0) line was wrong

fter using the recommended (desktop gui) method to upgrade from 8.04 to
8.10 I now have an unbootable system.

This is using the install server option. The box is in use now so I
cannot retry with a different installer, but I can provide hardware info
if you tell me which commands will give it to me.

Have you tried to use multiple AuthLDAPUrl lines? ie:
No I haven't, but I will. Before I do - does this syntax also guarantee
that ldap1 (in your example) will be tried first? or do both have the
same weighting?

Well it seams to me that this is the main problem, that developers of Linux
and other open source OSes. And We need _equivalents_ of _popular_
applications on a Ubuntu PC Does not seam to have solved the problem.
Well porting proprietary products to Linux would defeat the point
2.6.15-26-386 too.
This is running in VMware, and I get an error: oprofile: P4 PMC not
available on the console.
Maybe oprofile and VMware don't play together.

Before we even can think about making, Ubuntu Linux mainstream we MUST get all
well know programs that work on a Windows PC to work on a Ubuntu PC.
We need _equivalents_ of _popular_ applications on a Ubuntu PC, not
_all_well-known_programs_.
And for most applications, there is.
