Solved. The installer has a bug. I have a separate boot partition which the installer did not mount or perhaps unmounted (it is in /etc/fstab) Anyway: * The new kernel was installed in the mountpoint directory. * The initrd image was missing from the grub menu.lst * The hd(0,0) line was wrong
