Okay, really getting discouraged here.
On arguably the world's smallest production server, a Compaq Armada
7730MT (Pentium MMX, 140MB) laptop, a clean install of 9.10 generic
fails with similar symptoms as the OP i.e. You need to load a kernel
first.
Getting into the grub menu via the shift key

I have the same problem(s), besides theres is no easy way to add/remove
pulseaudio or reconfigure it. pulseaudio play sounds in variable speed ,
and in low quality ,sometimes with hiss on my machine, there is no easy
way of getting rid of pulseaudio and using pure ALSA, and say programs
to use it

cpu usage is 100% while using apt-cacher, i have this problem at home
and at work. they both was fine in ubuntu 8.10 i don't know the version
of apt-cacher in that version of ubuntu.

I'm using apt-cacher to save bandwidth , and have same problem. when i
configure apt to get files directly from internet(not through apt-
cacher) it works fine.I'm trying to upgrade gutsy to hardy.
