[Bug 1888422] Re: Notebook suspends during boot when booting with lid closed

2020-07-21 Thread pabouk
I am sorry for the misinformation. Now I see I originally installed
Ubuntu in the version 19.10 then upgraded it to 20.04. The problem was
present in the version 19.10 already.

** Description changed:

When I am booting notebook with external monitor connected (either
directly or through a docking station) and the lid closed I enter the
full disk encryption password and a moment later the notebook goes to
suspend state (suspend to RAM) before the GDM login screen shows up on
the monitor. When I wake the notebook using the power button on the
docking station (the lid is still closed) everything then works
  correctly.

It does not matter if the power supply is connected or not.

The problem shows up in over 95% of cases. (At least once the notebook
  booted normally.)

- It is the clean installation of Ubuntu 20.04 no power management or
- booting changes done outside of the standard GUI configuration tools. It
- is installed in UEFI mode on Lenovo ThinkPad T540p.

[Bug 1089195] Re: linux-headers will eat your inodes on LTS.

2016-02-06 Thread pabouk
@algal If your system is able to remove packages (apt-get remove) do the
following:

1. List installed kernel headers packages:
dpkg --get-selections | grep -E '^linux-headers-[1-9].+[[:space:]]install$'

2. Remove the oldest ones (replace ...):
sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-...
or
sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-...

If the system is in a more serious state (too little free inodes or
inconsistent apt database), then move some oldest headers away manually,
repair the database, remove some packages as in the point 2 above etc...
I described my procedure in the comment here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/317763/apt-get-no-space-left-on-
device-12-04#comment654528_425635

[Bug 748539] Re: Multi-monitor - Panel and launcher visible on top of multimonitor non-focused fullscreen apps

2015-09-24 Thread pabouk
I am confirming the same problem as in #38 and #39. The bug still
persists and it is very annoying. I am running Ubuntu 14.04.3 with
VMware Workstation.

When I have a VM running full-screen on one monitor and I switch focus
to a different window, the Unity top bar appears over the full-screen
VMware Workstation. Switching the focus back to the Workstation does not
resolve the problem. Only switching it from full-screen and then back
helps.

[Bug 1246908] Re: ~/.gimp-2.8 directory and everything inside is owned by root

2015-09-06 Thread pabouk
Try to rename the Gimp directory:

1. stop all the Gimp processes
2. sudo mv "$USER/.gimp-2.8" "$USER/.gimp-2.8-backup"
3. sudo mv ~root/.gimp-2.8 ~root/.gimp-2.8-backup

If after this operation everything works you can remove the
.gimp-2.8-backup directories.

[Bug 231385] Re: EOG opens images with 99% zoom (blurry) instead of 100%

2014-11-28 Thread pabouk
There is a new bug report specific to Ubuntu 14.04 / 14.10: bug
#1296487

Could you please vote (and subscribe) there?

---
@Rasmus Graver: "Why not just make the window 2px bigger to fit the image on
100%."

Because the difference is not always 2 pixels. Try to change the theme
to High Contrast - the bug will not show up. Try to disable the toolbar
in EOG - the bug will not show up. ...and anyway adding two pixels will
not be a correct fix and the problem would probably manifest different
ways in the future.

[Bug 1247564] Re: Initial window size slightly too small causing scaling+smoothing on image

2014-11-28 Thread pabouk
Was this bug really fixed in Ubuntu? As Øyvind Stegard wrote the same
bug is still present in Ubuntu 14.04.

With the default theme (Ambiance, and Radiance too) the window height is
2 pixels smaller than necessary for the correct pixel to pixel display.
When the theme is changed to High Contrast or the toolbar in EOG is
disabled the bug does not show.

14.04 contains GTK+ 3.10.8 and the resolution from
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=719595 was released with
GTK+ 3.10.6. In the source I see that the change from the patch is still
there.

Should this bug be re-opened? How to mark that the problem is not
resolved in 14.04?

There is also a new bug report specific to 14.04:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/1296487
Should it be marked as a duplicate of this one?

[Bug 741869] Re: Unity/compiz intercepts Super and Alt keypresses from grabbed windows like VMs.

2014-08-05 Thread pabouk
The behaviour is much better after patching but for example in VMware
Workstation (or Player) some problems persist:

When the keyboard is grabbed (mouse is in the window of a VM with VMware
Tools) and the keys (Super or Alt) are pressed nothing happens in Unity
as expected. But when the keyboard is ungrabbed (mouse leaves the
window) shortly after the keypress Unity behaves as if the key was
pressed again.

Test case:
1. In VMware Workstation (or Player) start a VM with VMware Tools installed.
2. Move the mouse cursor inside the window of the VM.
3. Press Super or Alt.
4. In less than 2 seconds move the mouse cursor outside of the window.
5. Nothing should happen in Unity but Unity actually behaves as if the key
(Super or Alt) was pressed again.

It seems that there is a timeout for this behaviour. When the keyboard
is ungrabbed after more than approximately 3 seconds then nothing
happens in Unity as expected.

Alternative test case (does not require VMware Tools but is not so annoying.):
1. In VMware Workstation (or Player) start a VM.
2. Grab the keyboard in the VM (Ctrl+G or mouse click).
3. Press Alt. (Super does not demonstrate this problem completely in this
variant.)
4. In less than 2 seconds ungrab the kyboard by pressing Ctrl+Alt.
5. Nothing should happen in Unity but Unity actually behaves as if the key
(Alt) was pressed again. (With Super Dash only flashes shortly.)

...but since this problem does not show up when the VM is in full screen
mode then it seems that the bugfix in Unity behaves correctly as
described in this case.

[Bug 615471] Re: Sound Does Not Work In Lucid

2014-07-29 Thread pabouk
The problem persists in 14.04.

The solution with the parameter in /etc/dosemu/dosemu.conf works:
$_sound = (2)

Could you please make it the default setting?

Alternative solution is to emulate /dev/dsp. Start dosemu this way:
sudo padsp dosemu

[Bug 1334998] Re: When using Super+L keys autohide not working properly

2014-07-28 Thread pabouk
Another workaround is to use the alternative shortcut without Super:
Ctrl+Alt+L

Probably the shortcuts with Super should cancel showing of the Launcher
when the other key of the shortcut (like L in Super+L) is pressed.

[Bug 1089195] Re: linux-headers will eat your inodes on LTS.

2014-06-29 Thread pabouk
This is really annoying bug. Even experienced user who never encountered
a problem with consumed inodes will spend a lot of time finding the
cause of the problem. The error message "No space left on device" does
not suggest that the problem is with inodes.

The update process should certainly remove very old kernels
automatically by default or show an explanatory warning.

There are many examples of users which faced this problem:
http://askubuntu.com/q/317763/67132

[Bug 1303736] Re: [SRU] Black screen after wakeup from suspending by closing the laptop lid

2014-06-18 Thread pabouk
Thanks Ulli. xrandr can really return the display to a functional state.
I have the problem on ASUS Eee PC 1000H.

In the problematic state xrandr shows no mode selected (I do not know what it
does mean):
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 600, maximum 32767 x 32767
LVDS1 connected primary (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1024x600 60.0 + 65.0
   800x60060.3 56.2
   640x48059.9
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

After resolving of the problem (using xrandr --auto) shows a mode selected:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 600, maximum 32767 x 32767
LVDS1 connected primary 1024x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
220mm x 129mm
   1024x600 60.0*+ 65.0
   800x60060.3 56.2
   640x48059.9
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

In the problematic state the verbose output of xrandr differs also in the value
of CRTC:
CRTCs: 1
After resolving of the problem:
CRTC: 0
CRTCs: 0

-
It is possible to resolve the problematic state without preparation of any
scripts in advance:

a) After logging-in when the black screen is being shown:
  1. press Ctrl+Alt+t to open a terminal
  2. blindly type (+ enter at the end): xrandr --auto

b) After logging-in when the black screen is being shown:
  1. press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to the text console
  2. login
  3. run: chvt 7 ; DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --auto

[Bug 1320995] Re: Error message after setting a non-standard display resolution in a virtual machine

2014-05-20 Thread pabouk
Here is a screenshot of the desktop right after logging in. You can see
part of the extremely tall error pop-up and the display resolution
setting.

You can also notice that at this phase the desktop is not completely functional:
- The window menus are permanently visible at their normal (non-Unity) place.
- Some keyboard shortcuts do not work. (e.g. Super for the Dash or Ctrl+Alt+t
for terminal)

[Bug 1320995] Re: Error message after setting a non-standard display resolution in a virtual machine

2014-05-19 Thread pabouk
** Description changed:

I am running Ubuntu 64b 14.04 in a virtual machine under VMware
Workstation 10.0.2. I use the open-vm-tools from the standard Ubuntu
repository. The Ubuntu desktop automatically resizes when I resize the
  Workstation window.

Unfortunately when I open System Setting > Displays and store the actual
(arbitrary - non-standard) resolution (now for example 1696 x 1074) then after
reboot and logging-in unity-settings-daemon shows a pop-up window with an
extremely long error message beginning:

CRTC 63: trying mode 2560x1600@60Hz with output at 1696x1074@60Hz (pass 0)
  --
+
+ The problem also appears after logout and login if the display
+ resolution changes meanwhile.

Another minor bug is that the pop-up window does not have sliders and is

[Bug 1317253] Re: UI scaling and font scaling sometime get confused/change at random.

2014-05-18 Thread pabouk
I think that the bug was misunderstood. I have noticed the same bug but
when I scaled the UI the other way -- down.

In "System Settings > Displays > Scale for menu and title bars" I set
0.875 to have smaller control elements in the GUI. This setting also
scaled the fonts down. Unfortunately few days later I noticed that the
fonts are very small - almost unreadable. I did not have Unity Tweak
installed at this time so it is not certainly a bug on the Unity Tweak
Tool.

Returning the "Scale for menu and title bars" parameter back to 1 did
not return the scaling to normal.

To quickly check various parameters inaccessible in the standard UI I
have later installed Unity Tweak and there I noticed that the scaling
factor for fonts was set to 0.5. I have never configured the scaling
factor for fonts! After returning both scaling factors to 1 the system
appears normally again.

[Bug 525033] Re: During installation "Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/XXX -- Device or resource busy"

2013-10-12 Thread pabouk
Installation of Xubuntu 13.10 beta2, also observed with Xubuntu 13.10 beta1 and
Ubuntu 13.10 beta1.
Installation on Asus Eeee PC 1000H.

After partitioning (default options) a popup with this text appears:

Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda1 --
Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any changes
you made to /dev/sda1 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount it or
use it in any way before rebooting.

I tried to update the partition information manually without success:

# partprobe /dev/sda
Error: Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda1 --
Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any changes you made
to /dev/sda1 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount it or use it in any way
before rebooting.
Error: Failed to add partition 1 (Device or resource busy)

I checked the status of /dev/sda:

# fuser -v /dev/sda
 USERPID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/sda:root 4051 F parted_server

So parted_server wrongly keeps /dev/sda open.

After pressing "Ignore" button in the popup the same message appears for
/dev/sda2.
After pressing "Ignore" button again the following message appears:

The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda)
failed.

Then the parted_server does not keep /dev/sda open any more and the
kernel partition table (/proc/partitions) is partially updated
(/dev/sda5). After running partprobe /dev/sda the kernel partition table
is updated completely (sda1, sda2, sda5).

After pressing OK in the last pop-up, the installer returns to the
"Installation type" window. After pressing "Install now" the
installation normally continues.

[Bug 1236156] [NEW] [VIA8237] xfce4-indicator-plugin shows greyed volume control icon

2013-10-06 Thread pabouk
Public bug reported:

1) --- Ubuntu version ---
Xubuntu 13.10 beta2

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Saucy Salamander (development branch)
Release:13.10

2) --- problematic package version ---
$ apt-cache policy xfce4-indicator-plugin
xfce4-indicator-plugin:
  Installed: 0.5.0-2ubuntu1

3) --- expected behaviour ---
I expect that the xfce4-indicator-plugin shows active speaker icon and after
clicking it volume slider.

4) --- observed behaviour ---
xfce4-indicator-plugin shows greyed speaker icon (with three dashes on the
right). After clicking it small empty rectangle appears below.

5) --- other relevant information ---
The process xfce4-volumed is running.
alsamixer works without problems.
The same problem appeared with Xubuntu 13.10 beta1 and probably with Ubuntu
13.10 beta1 too.
The same problem appears when I use SoundBlaster Audigy SB0090 instead of
built-in VIA8237.

Where can I see for which Ubuntu release was the fix released? In Ubuntu
12.04 the bug is still present.

[Bug 9441] Re: the locate pointer option breaks other keybindings

2012-11-15 Thread pabouk
The problematic option in Ubuntu 12.04 is:
System Settings -> Mouse and Touchpad -> Show position of pointer when the
Control key is pressed

This bug causes also problems in:
VNC Viewer
KeePass2
Remmina (if Grab all keyboard events is not turned on)

[Bug 220497] Re: network-manager doesn't handle ppp connections.

2009-02-20 Thread pabouk
I am using Interpid with Network Manager 0.7 but NM does not allow me to
manage dialup connections. I do not see Dialup connections or ppp in NM
at all. If I start a ppp connection the normal way using pppd it is not
recognized by NM and I cannot use VPN connections in NM.
