[Bug 410948] Re: Volume too loud

2009-10-31 Thread phenest
I'm not sure what the purpose of these logs are. I mean, everyone knows
what the problem is: the alsa mixer tracks are increasing asynchronously
instead of the previous approach which was to select what tracks you
want the volume to control, thus having a selection of tracks moving
synchronously (or one track only). This is a bug as the current method
has undesirable effects. Put simply (and I'm sure all here will agree),
can we have the old method as found in Jaunty so the user can decide?

I have a fix based on someone else's idea:
Open /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf and change the
LFE and Master sections so 'volume = ignore'. Then open alsamixer in a
terminal, and set Master and LFE to 100%. You should now find that the volume
hotkeys now control just PCM.

[Bug 410948] Re: Volume too loud

2009-08-15 Thread phenest
Karmic alpha 4
I'm finding the same as Taylor. I have a Dell Precision M90 laptop with an LFE
channel (sub-woofer). Watching alsamixer, I see that PCM goes up first,
followed by LFE, followed by Master. I won't allow anything else. Using the
volume hotkeys gives the same results. This means my sub-woofer is at full
volume before the main speakers start to do anything.

A fresh install of Karmic alpha 3 shows all the channels working
independently in alsamixer. So there has been an update since then that
has broken it.

Public bug reported:

Karmic alpha 4
Linux testing 2.6.31-5-generic #24-Ubuntu SMP Sat Aug 1 12:47:58 UTC 2009

I have a bluetooth Kensington Si670m mouse with a tilt wheel. This works
perfectly in Jaunty, but has never worked in Karmic since alpha 1. The
horizontal scrolling does appear to work, but the cursor immediately
jumps to the top-left of the screen. I have seen, on rarer occasions,
this behaviour from just moving the cursor around. But it does do it

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Change the gconf setting /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop to
false, and nautilus hangs. All I get is a busy cursor on the desktop,
and I can't open any file manager windows with nautilus. CPU usage goes
up, but nothing shows in top. Change the setting back to true, and all
is well.

The window list on the gnome panel will fill up with buttons showing
Nautilus as 'starting'. Setting show_desktop=true again, and all those
buttons disappear.

After setting showdesktop back to true, all my volumes have been
mounted.

This was tested with alpha 4 Live CD.

[Bug 378325] Re: X login screen volume always set to max; crazy loud

2009-08-04 Thread phenest
Despite it being an 'alsa thing', it can be amended by the Ubuntu devs. The
alsa file in question is /etc/init.d/alsa-utils. Line 143 has the function
'sanify_levels_on_card' where it can be clearly seen the levels are at 80%. I
have demonstrated to myself, with a custom Live CD, that reducing these levels
(master or pcm) does reduce the volume.
Either that, or the devs could simply disable the sound effects.

[Bug 285746] Re: System cleaner removes explicitly installed third-party packages

2009-03-29 Thread phenest
I've always used Synaptic Package Manager for this purpose. One thing it
does, is separate 'local or obsolete' from 'auto removable'. Can/does CJ
do this?

A further thought is the 'residual config' that Synaptic provides. This
would be a good addition for CJ. Perhaps you should have some buttons to
switch between the different types of cruft to remove.

[Bug 350956] [NEW] Rename Computer Janitor

2009-03-29 Thread phenest
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: computer-janitor

'Computer Janitor' makes it sound a very general application, and gives users
the idea that it should do other things, such as empty the recycle bin.
Computer Janitor is a very specific application that deals with unwanted
packages only.
I Suggest renaming it to 'Package Janitor'. There are probably others too. I
think this is much more descriptive and there would be less confusion.

[Bug 285746] Re: System cleaner removes explicitly installed third-party packages

2009-03-28 Thread phenest
This white list needs to be automated. That is to say, installing or
removing 3rd party packages via Package Installer or dpkg should
automatically update the white list. This would be in addition to
unchecking/checking any packages in Computer Janitor.

[Bug 45739] Re: Loud startup noise during boot

I think the fix needs to be a simple one: don't disable the sound or try

always customized the Live CD to have a lower level, or muted.

[Bug 267495] Re: Dell Precision M90 hotkeys not working

Amazingly, they work again flawlessly! And here's why/how...

I deleted all the hidden files from the /home folder and reinstalled
Intrepid. Et voila! I haven't done any updates yet, but I've never had
the media buttons working in Intrepid before. Until now. Both Rhythmbox
and Totem respond perfectly.

Go figure.

My laptop is a Dell Precision M90 which is actually an XPS M1710 but

I'm currently running Intrepid with latest updates and Rhythbox is
responding. Even the mute button is working. I do find, however, that a
simple press (enough for the button backlight to come on), is not always
enough. A slightly longer press is required, but they will work.

I will test with some other apps, both Gnome and 3rd party.
