Please close the ticket. After a 2 weeks off and upgrading to latest
version the problem disappeared. Not sure what changed but it is solved
now.

[Bug 2067830] Re: High power consumption of gnome-shell

2024-06-07 Thread pinus
Sorry I wanted to send you the apport from my tuser account but failed
due to email-verification and stuff which annoyed me enough to give up.

With a new user tuser, just created for this purpose I can reproduce the
issue. I reboot, login screen, ~80W, login tusr ~130W. I removed this
Welcome Ubuntu thingy.

And yes first I suspected plugins and stuff, disabled them. But even
with a fresh, newly created user it happens.

It doesn't seem to be the load, it seems to be the frequency. Using cpu
util of the kernel I can hinder the cpu to boost setting it to
powersave. The power draw is significantly lower. Something seems to run
very frequent keeping cpu from going to sleep.

Currently typing this message in Firefox and having a console with htop
running. The cores should be mostly at 2200MHz. But the aren't. Htops
top scorers are htop 3-5%, gnome-shell 1-2% and /usr/bin/vxc-init 1-2%.

Without htop running:

[Bug 2064847] Re: Power consumption much higher after switching to Ubuntu 24.04

2024-05-24 Thread pinus
I figured out that the USB boot stick didn't have the problem. I also figured
out that the power consumption on the login screen is below 100W.
If I login to Ubuntu the power consumption raises about 50W, no matter of X or
Wayland. I created a new user without my settings and plugins but still ~50W
raise. I installed KDE Plasman, which doesn't have this problem, power
consumption stays at ~100W.

Which package is responsible for the Ubuntu desktop?

[Bug 2064847] [NEW] Power consumption much higher after switching to Ubuntu 24.04

2024-05-05 Thread pinus
Public bug reported:

I have desktop pc, AMD platform, also AMD graphics card. It was running
Ubuntu 20.04. Because I switched the graphics card I plugged my system
on a power meter. After the switch, the installation consumed ~100W.

Some weeks later I installed Ubuntu 24.04. The bad experience is a
different story. I managed to get it running. Now the System consumes
190W. No hardware changes!

CPU load shows ~0, LAMP shows ~7W for the graphics card. All disks spin
down after 15 minutes. Nothing could explain 90W. Even the CPU is
limited in the BIOS to 65W.

Is it possible that the new Ubuntu overwrites the power limit of the
CPU?

[Bug 1727506] [NEW] Delete whole disk, disk choice missing

2017-10-25 Thread pinus
Public bug reported:

I have a serious issue with the 17.10 installer.
Very early in the installation process the installer
asks which installation destination to use.
There you can choose use whole disk, with a warning all data lost!
If you have multiple disks in your system, would you choose this option?
I did not because I feared that this crappy software destroys the wrong disk.

After unplugging my disks, reboot etc., I found out that there is a drop
down to choose the disk, in the next page of the wizard.
THIS IS TO LATE!

Please put this drop down where you ask for a decision to delete a disk.

Ok, thanks, and yes indeed the fstab entry was missing and I had to use
the device names instead of the UUIDs. Thanks for this helpful comment.

For documentation my working setting with a key file.

[Bug 1313326] [NEW] Crypted swap doesn't work any more

2014-04-27 Thread pinus
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 via fresh install and copied my configuration
if possible.

I installed with full disk encryption, without swap partition. Now I
want to use a swap partition on a data drive, which is configured
manually after installation. I used such a setup with my old
installation but it doesn't work any more with 14.04.

crypttab:
cryptswap1 UUID=42640352-427f-4b99-99bf-9f80baca5e16 /dev/urandom
swap,cipher=aes-cbc-essiv:sha256

Calling /etc/init.d/cryptdisks reload tells me everything is ok, but
there is no swap!

I messed around with the cryptdisks.functions, see >>> log entries
below. I see no error and swapon -s reports no swap.

[Bug 1269957] [NEW] [HDA-Intel - HDA Creative, playback] No sound at all

2014-01-16 Thread pinus
Public bug reported:

After messing around with the onboard sound of my ASUS 787-A board and
not being able to have any sound over the audio jacks I gave up and
bought a Creative SoundBlaster SE which I read is supported by Linux.
But I still have no sound. I checked the speaker and headphones I pluged
in with my MP3 player, the work well. I tried every plug available, no
sound. The only thing I could not check is HDMI sound, I have no device.

I tried alsamixer to make sure everything is unmuted. Tried speaker-
test. Tried pavucontrol and audio test sounds of the system settings. I
could see pavucontrol the bar moving while plaing sound with rhythmbox
but no sound.

The settings are from a fresh live CD boot to make sure I have no
fragments of my tests. No sound!

[Bug 1266205] Re: No sound at all after upgrade from 13.10 disk to latest Kernel 2.1.2014

2014-01-07 Thread pinus
I doubt that this is the issue. I have tested so many scenarios that I lost
track, but currently only one user is logged in and there is no sound. I have
started Audacity and selected ALSA and HDA Intel PCH: ALC892 Analog but get no
sound. There is no pulseaudio involved.
The test tones in the settings dialogs produce no output. The hissing goes away
if I mute the channel. But no sound.

[Bug 1266205] [NEW] No sound at all after upgrade from 13.10 disk to latest Kernel 2.1.2014

2014-01-05 Thread pinus
Public bug reported:

After the installation of 13.10 sound worked, same for booting from CD.
After upgrade to latest update the sound stopped working, only hissing
comes out od the speaker.

I tried to boot with the old kernel, no change. Sound still broken.

Tried the alsa reload thing mentioned, "sudo alsa force-reload". Sound
still broken.

Tried audacity, you can go directly configure the port. No sound.

It is a new ASUS Z87-A board with on bord sound.

[Bug 799427] [NEW] NFS4 name resolving fails

2011-06-19 Thread pinus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nfs-common

I wanted to set up a small file server. Since it is not acceptable for
me to have the same UID on all clients I decided to use NFS4 which
should be able to solve that. I started with Ubuntu 11.04 server.

What I did manage is access files (rw) if I have the same UID on client
and server. If they differ I get an error message.

I find that a bit surprising since I have the most basic setup which
should work without trouble.

/etc/exports on the server
/data 10.0.0.0/24(rw,sync,fsid=0,crossmnt,no_subtree_check)

/etc/idmapd.conf on client and server
[General]
Verbosity = 0
Pipefs-Directory = /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs
Domain = local
[Mapping]
Nobody-User = nobody
Nobody-Group = nogroup

/etc/hosts on the server

/etc/hosts on the client

ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

Hostnames on client and server (hostname command)

Dnsdomainname on client and server (dnsdomainname command)

But I get strange syslog entries

[Bug 609575] [NEW] gdm doesn't unmount crypted directories

2010-07-24 Thread pinus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I use a crypted home directory using cryptmount, cryptsetup etc.
I use pam-mount to pass my password to the mount command.
This way everything works but I want the directory to be unmounted at logout.
This doesn't work.
I tried to modify PostSession/Default script to unmount.
The unmount failed because of open files.
I tried to kill -9 `lsof -t $HOME_DIR` but some are persistent.

[Bug 433051] Re: cryptsetup fails to open LUKS partition

2009-11-15 Thread pinus
I did a fresh install and configured a crypted user home (/home/user) that is
opened at login using pam.
I have the following errors in my auth.log.

pam_mount(mount.c:67): Errors from underlying mount program:
pam_mount(mount.c:71): Command successful.

The underlying program seems to be cryptsetup. I made three big red
crosses on my calendar because I did a fresh install on another
harddisk. I wonder if I will ever get an update without regression.

The hardware is a Dell inspiron 6400 that came with Linux preinstalled. I had a
7.10 running. The wlan worked.
After updating to 8.04 wlan doesn't work any more. After wrestling with all
kind of configurations and packages I gave up and reinstalled 8.04. And wow it
does work again. Then I installed the lates updates and they broke the wlan
again. The updates leave the old kernel 2.6.24.16 which works and the new
kernel 2.6.24.19 which is broken.
I don't know what they did between the releases but it breaks the wlan support
on my notebook. If you have the same notebook ane experience similar problems,
try the older kernel.

[Bug 164904] Re: stray mappings left behind by xfs make xen kernels crash.

2008-01-05 Thread pinus
I discovered 3 frozen systems in the last two days, all in combination
with I/O errors. The xfs_repair discovered bad inodes. Is it likely that
the patch results in a updated Kernel?

[Bug 85488] Re: some usb_devices fault if usb_suspend enabled

2007-06-02 Thread pinus
A second kernel might be a support nightmare. But this issue destroys
Ubuntus reputation as a professional distribution. If you need your
computers for business, would you upgrade after this bug? "Ubuntu" just
showed that they release with a major _known_ regression and that they
are not able to fix the problem. I can hardly imagine something worse
for the reputation.

I confirm that using the beta of 6.10 is not able to install on a XFS
LVM partition using format = yes.
