[Bug 95413] Re: gnome hijacks keys from under RTCW:ET (game) and then locks up keyboard (tilde key is the culprit)

2008-10-24 Thread rasz
sorry, changed mobo/gfx combo in the mean time, but I can confirm I was
using Nvidia (GF4 Ti4200) at the time so maybe there is something wrong
with nvidia closed driver and not gnome/libSDL

[Bug 106505] removing linux-image = stupid confusing question

2007-04-14 Thread rasz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debconf

Upgrading linux-image while removing existing one will result in
stupid/confusing dialog box (attached a file)
Lets go over it one by one:
- I upgrade the kernel, new kernel is already downloaded and waiting on the
disk for the install
- there are 3 buttons to chose from cancel, back, forward, and one check
box do you want to remove, WTF? is user supposed to be psychic? I am a
developer/coder/IT support guy and it took me 3 tries to figure out what its
all about and how to just say YES, remove god dammit
- help makes it even more confusing, it tells you about Yes and No options,
there are no such options, it tells you about boot loader configuration while
its automagic when installing new kernel, it doesn't know we already downloaded
new kernel and will install it in a second
- all this could be solved by simply reordering the actions, install new kernel
first, then remove the old one.

netllama - NVIDIA Corporation:
I'm not aware of anyone representing Ubuntu contacting NVIDIA to get an
official statement on driver support, so I'm not sure why they think that
anything is unsupported. Please have them email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Neither the 1.0-71xx nor the 1.0-96xx legacy driver branches have been
abandoned, nor are they unsupported. They are both legacy driver
branches which will receive critical bug fixes and Linux kernel Xorg
compatibility updates as needed. This has been the policy for 1.0-71xx
legacy for quite some time, and no one from Ubuntu voiced any concerns
to NVIDIA.

yep, sure sounds like they are abandoning 96xx driver ...

anyway I downgraded to -12 kernel and nvidia-glx_1.0.9631

for all the ppl out there , just do

if you have the correct kernel-old driver pair just install them with

[Bug 34859] Re: gdm / X server does not restart after Ctrl + Alt + Backspace

/me thinks feisty will be gnome 2.18, and gnome devs dont want to
backport to 2.18 rather hacky bugfix for the hack they introduced
earlier to fix buggy pam modules :) so they pushed this hacky hack for
hacky hack to 2.19. or rather they deleted the hack that bugfixed pam
modules, so now pam modules need fixing :) but restarting gdm works (in
2.19 that is, so not in feisty)

all we can hope is for Ubuntu gnome maintainer to backport this patch.
until then its alt-ctrl-f1 and sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start for us :/

[Bug 95413] gnome hijacks keys from under RTCW:ET (game) and then locks up keyboard (tilde key is the culprit)

2007-03-24 Thread rasz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

Gnome hijacks keys from under RTCW:ET (game) and then locks up keyboard.

It goes like this:
-I run standard ubuntu desktop (Feisty beta).
-I fire up ET, join a server, play a little and everything is a-ok, I can smack
every key I want, I can open console with tilde blabla
-I click tilde for the x time to read something on the console and BAM, all of
a sudden
.keyboard locks up
.ET mouse pointer is no longer the ET one (big gray one) but default Gnome
(small black with white outline).

This happens every time, it can take first try, or 1h of play, but it
will happen every time i sit to play.

Now what is happening and what I tried.
The keyboard works, but only for gnome keys and system wide (c-a-f1 for
consoles,c-a-backspace for killing X and so on), and since gnome is dumped down
for retards there is no consistent way of disabling/editing all the gnome
shortcuts (like that tilde one or even a print screen).
My current theory is like this. Somehow during my ET session gnome opens a
file manager in the background. Now when the file manager window has focus
clicking tilde key opens little input field god knows why and for what (since
gnome is for morons there is no info what is it and how to turn this 'feature'
off, that surely would 'scare the newbies' /sarcasm). This little input field
is pure magic powered (its modal) and blocks the window from being closed (open
file manager, press tilde, try to close the file manager window, yep, you have
to wait till input window mercifully goes away by its own). Few times while
locked up in the game with no keyboard input to libSDL I managed by pressing
everything like a wild monkey to make that little input window appear on my
screen ON TOP of running openGL game. Maybe by some magic bug this window pops
up under the game and doesnt want to go away by its own? Mouse works while this
is happening, my scroll wheel can scroll ET console messages, I can move the
mouse pointer (although its the gnome one, not ET).

I tried c-a-f1 to text terminal, ps aux, look for gnome stuff and kill it, it
didnt do a damn thing, nothing changed after switching back to X. This right
there is weird :/, after all I killed everything but GDM.
I tried stopping GDM, sudo xinit, and running the game in pure X, few 2-4h
sessions with zero problems while pressing the tilde key approximately 100
times.
Finally I was happily playing ET on Edgy for 2 weeks before installing Feisty
on new drive (not an upgrade, but a clean install of herd 5 plus all the
updates to this day) without this problem.

I am happy to test workarounds, debug, dig in to the code and trash the
system just to find whats going on, so please throw some ideads at me.

[Bug 95413] Re: gnome hijacks keys from under RTCW:ET (game) and then locks up keyboard (tilde key is the culprit)

2007-03-24 Thread rasz
To clarify further.
In RTCW:ET I have binded shift, ctrl, alt, caps, tab and half of the keyboards
left side. I often press ctr/alt/shift/some keys combinations. Probably one of
them makes gnome do something ... when its running full-screen libsdl game and
shouldnt be listening to the keyboard in the first place :(. Of course there is
no way to edit/disable those magic gnome shortcuts (at least not in the
options).

Also the I can move the mouse pointer means I see a mouse pointer and can
move it on game screen, but the normal Q3 engine based games behaviour is _no
cursor_ + _mouse moves around your in game view-port_.

It acts EXACTLY as if it was windowed + open console. When Q3 engine
based games are windowed + console open the rest of the system can use
the mouse and keyboard, but with console closed ONLY libsdl gets the
keystrokes (or should get).

I also tried playing windowed for 4h, keyboard hijacking never happened.

So this is one obscure bug :(. Its either libsdl or gnome.

Could you try to get a valgrind log for it?

not really, it happened only once and spontaneously while update manager was
doing something in the background :(
Iv seen gnome-panel crash in dapper when some applet died (bubblemon, netspeed),
but I have no applets but the clock in feisty (not even theat default network

anyway in dapper there was applet 'would you like to cancel/reload applet X'
