[Bug 1874272] Re: Stage "searching for obsolete software" takes a very long time (30 minutes)

2024-08-01 Thread Sami Kuisma
I am having the same problem. Stuck at "Searching for obsolete software",
nearly an hour and now at 97%.
Upgrading 22.04 to 24.04 from command line.

CPU at 100% noble process. I have Ryzen 5950X + pcie 4 nvme samsung, so
it is pretty fast but still taking almost an hour.

[Bug 2068773] Re: Sticky keys accessibility feature breaks after pressing control key twice

2024-06-07 Thread Sami Sieranoja
On second thoughts, this might be a feature, to keep control key locked.
It seems that pressing control key twice again gets one back to normal
state. But the bug is that this feature is not documented in the help
page and I didn't find instructions for this anywhere. And the same
thing doesn't work with alt key in case of alt-tab, so it's not
consistent for all modifiers. Some visual feedback for the state change
would also be nice. Its very confusing when one activates this by
accident.

[Bug 1969909] [NEW] The is no documented way to UEFI/PXE netboot debian-installer in Jammy

2022-04-22 Thread Sami Niemimäki
Public bug reported:

Since there is no mini.iso available anymore, there does not seem to be
a way to UEFI/PXE netboot debian-installer. This is a showstopper for
our installations. We currently have about 1500 Desktop/Laptop
computers, which we install over the network.

The web page at
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jammy/main/installer-
amd64/current/legacy-images/ suggests that we should use server
installer instead, but this is troublesome and inefficient with the huge
server install image.

We would prefer to continue using debian-installer, which easily allows
us to install just few packages and then hand over the process to puppet
in d-i preseed/late_command.

Could you please reconsider releasing the mini.iso or provide some other
way to netboot preseeded debian-installer.

Thank you.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Confirmed

installer (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1960254] Re: [Intel Nuc] Realtek ALC700 S/PDIF audio output not found

** Description changed:

I have installed Ubuntu 21.10 on my Intel NUC8I7HVK.

I can't figure out how to configure my SPDIF to connect to my speaker
system. I have the correct mini-Toslink to standard cable and I can see
the laser light coming from the PC, so it is not likely a hardware
  problem.

- The NUC audio is Realtek SLC700.
+ The NUC audio is Realtek ALC700.

Can anyone help me properly configure my audio to recognize my SPDIF
digital output and support the 5.1 Dolby surround?

  -
In pavucontrol i don't see any SPDIF output, headphones work fine.

** Description changed:

I have installed Ubuntu 21.10 on my Intel NUC8I7HVK.

I can't figure out how to configure my SPDIF to connect to my speaker
system. I have the correct mini-Toslink to standard cable and I can see
the laser light coming from the PC, so it is not likely a hardware
  problem.

The NUC audio is Realtek SLC700.

Can anyone help me properly configure my audio to recognize my SPDIF
digital output and support the 5.1 Dolby surround?

  -
In pavucontrol i don't see any SPDIF output, headphones work fine.

[Bug 1953681] [NEW] USB-devices do not work properly

2021-12-08 Thread Sami Pietila
Public bug reported:

I have Ubuntu 21.10. I have noticed that USB-ports do not work properly.
On multiple machines for example wireless mouse might not work after a
reboot and I need to unplug and plug the dongle to get it working.

Then when there are multiple USB-devices connected to the computer, the
USB-port might die and only reboot helps. In that case kernel dmesg
shows messages like these:

la joulu 4 13:53:44 2021] xhci_hcd :0f:00.3: Abort failed to stop command

[Bug 1947162] Re: Bluetooth does not work on ASUS ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition G513 laptop on Ubuntu 21.10

2021-10-15 Thread Sami Pietila
There are also some other issues with 21.10 and the laptop hardware
1) Closing lid does not often put the laptop into proper sleep state (led strip
stays on), but screen goes blank and does not resume when lid is opened. A
reboot is needed to recover from this.
2) When downloading large files from the network (using wlan and also wired
link) it blocks other network connectivity. For example, no new web pages can
be loaded with internet browsers.

[Bug 1886653] Re: cups-pki-expired

2021-09-19 Thread Sami Pietila
I think the solution should be something that does not require editing
files under /etc.

Perhaps printing should prompt a question if the document should be
printed in case the printer certificate has expired.

[Bug 1934508] [NEW] Ejabberd fails with latest apparmor profile on Ubuntu 21.04

2021-07-02 Thread Sami hulkko
Public bug reported:

If Apparmor profile is enabled in Ubuntu 21.04 for ejabberd the program
fails to operate. It will constantly cut the connections to client
softwares that are unable to recover connection to server. Most likely
this bug is due the fact that access rights for erland modules ejabberd
is using are not right.

Workaround is to disable apparmor profile for ejabberd.

[Bug 1934390] [NEW] Apparmor prevents locking of /var/tmp/krb5* file for slapd

2021-07-01 Thread Sami hulkko
Public bug reported:

Kerbeross5 with LDAP backed and GSSAPI connectivity fails due the
Apparmor profile for slapd that doesn't include possibility to give read
and lock rights to slapd process.

Error on kern.log:

Jul 1 20:20:12 auth kernel: [ 875.743303] audit: type=1400
audit(1625160012.372:1191): apparmor="DENIED" operation="file_lock"
profile="/usr/sbin/slapd" name="/var/tmp/krb5_130.rcache2" pid=1559
comm="slapd" requested_mask="k" denied_mask="k" fsuid=130 ouid=130

This kerberos profile is most likely needed for connectivity to open-
ldap server due the fact that GSSAPI is used.

A quick fix is to add:
/var/tmp/krb5* rk,

into:
/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.slapd

[Bug 1750146] Re: Xbox (One) Wireless Controller won't connect

Lately I have been using the controller with a wireless adapter (not
bluetooth). This driver (https://github.com/medusalix/xow) seems to work
well. It would be nice if Ubuntu would ship this driver by default. Now
it must be manually installed from github.

[Bug 1897561] Re: libperl.so.5.30.0 causes nginx to segfault

2021-02-11 Thread Sami-Pekka Hallikas
In my original report I did say that this really is NOT nginx problem,
but Perl problem. Problem is in perl 5.30 and it is 5.32 (Perl5 commit
bf0) and people are asking backport to 5.30 to get fix also to
nginx.

More in https://github.com/Perl/perl5/issues/17154

My biggest issue is that this bug makes nginx quite unstable in LTS
version of Ubuntu, because perl module is active by default. Maybe quick
fix to get LTS stabile is to disable perl module by default from nginx-
extras (it can delivered in it, but if it commented out from default
config).

Yes, it would be good to have an informative error message indicating
ssh has failed and that the host key needs to be added to
/root/.ssh/known_hosts.

  [Steps to reproduce]

  1) launch a focal container
  $ lxc launch images:ubuntu/focal focal-1897561
  2) enter the container
  $ lxc shell focal-1897561
  3) install libnginx-mod-http-perl
  # apt-get install -y nginx-core libnginx-mod-http-perl
  4) check nginx journal
  # journalctl -fu nginx &
  5) reload nginx 2-3 times
  # systemctl reload nginx

Eventually you will see this from the journal:

  Oct 13 17:13:34 focal-1897561 systemd[1]: Reloaded A high performance web
server and a reverse proxy server.
  Oct 13 17:13:35 focal-1897561 systemd[1]: nginx.service: Main process exited,

  [Workaround]

If libnginx-mod-http-perl is not needed, purging it and restarting nginx
  sidesteps the problem.

[Bug 1882098] Re: Packagekit lets user install untrusted local packages in Bionic and Focal

2020-07-21 Thread Sami Niemimäki
Hello Seth,

I can now confirm that it does not matter if the test users are in no
groups.

The issue persists.

Lines 49 to 56 in the link I provided earlier describe the package-
install-untrusted action which should be triggered when installing local
packages:

Install untrusted local file

AFAIK this works as intended with other than aptcc backends, eg in Red Hat.

as far as I know that CRASH file wasn't created.

- nothing in /var/crash
- nothing recent in
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/e003a24bbaa04f1c5883029a977e36cc1f8f31ebf57b3f3df099cf9cb7d38bb43d671c6a7a2a6376d5385e8c7cbfe0f060bada6610fa542eb5f571a1fadd9fee

if the GUI process hadn't yet crashed, just frozen. as I couldn't get
into console (keyboard didn't work) I pressed the reset button in
computer. And there wasn't any crash file existing.

Now I installed ssh server, and if the gui freeze happens next time, I
can log in from another computer and see processes which is hung, or
hogging CPU or mem. The GUI freeze has happened 3 times since initial OS
install about a month ago.

2020-07-16 Thread Sami Kuisma
"The log in comment #4 is missing the time from when the machine booted,
which I also wanted to see, but maybe that doesn't matter..."

the uptime was 16d and system didn't have logs from the boot time.
the log had everything created by 'journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt' except grep
-v 'install4j_17tjtje-tws.desktop' lines

The system hadn't been running low on memory for days, unless it didn't happen
very suddenly because of some bug in firefox etc. I have 64GB and using roughly
20GB for days (I have top/htop running in terminal all the time). I am
typically aware of mem usage.

[Bug 1887821] [NEW] gnome-shell GUI freezes totally

2020-07-16 Thread Sami Kuisma
Public bug reported:

I'm using basic Ubuntu 20.04 and GUI (gnome?) freezes totally.
- I was running Firefox 78.0.2 and watching Youtube. The video and sound
stopped.
- Keyboard was unresponsive, can't get into console, and for example pressing
caps lock/num lock didn't toggle keyboard leds.
- mouse didn't move.
- The whole computer and OS didn't crash I suppose. I could ping the computer
from another computer. and there were entries in /var/log/syslog after the GUI
freeze.

What ever happened I can find some indicating in /var/log/syslog:

Crash happened 14:21 local time which pinpoints the bug into these
entries:

after that anything GUI, keyboard or mouse related was totally unresponsive.

there were other entries in syslog after that, and ping worked into this
frozen machine. So the whole OS didn't crash. Only GUI related.

I hope this helps.

[Bug 1882098] Re: Packagekit lets user install untrusted local packages in Bionic and Focal

2020-06-13 Thread Sami Niemimäki
Hello Seth,

the packagekit-deny rule should not be necessary, it's there to
underline what is specifically not allowed.

AFAIK, there are no other rules which could have granted this
permission. This happens on a fresh install of Ubuntu where the above is
the only modification to polkit rules.

I'm on vacation since yesterday evening, so I cannot currently check if
the groups have some kind of unexpected effect.

See this for reference:
https://github.com/hughsie/PackageKit/blob/master/policy/org.freedesktop.packagekit.policy.in

The issue is that the command 'pkcon install-local evil-package-i-just-
created.deb' triggers the action 'org.freedesktop.packagekit.package-
install' instead of 'org.freedesktop.packagekit.package-install-
untrusted' which it should.

I think this might be a snap issue. I wanted to ask how can I switch to
chromium-browser deb package like with libreoffice? Like with
libreoffice, the chromium-browser snap-version is very slow.

[Bug 1877711] Re: Libreoffice can read but not save files over SSH

2020-05-14 Thread Sami Pietila
I found a fix. I did uninstall the snap and installed deb packages from
libreoffice home page. Saving works and starting libreoffice is fast
again.

Is it possible to have libreoffice deb packages back to Ubuntu? It looks
like snap is quite problematic and slow.

[Bug 1877711] Re: Libreoffice can read but not save files over SSH

2020-05-11 Thread Sami Pietila
I am using the default Ubuntu Desktop (gnome). I am connecting to the
server by using the desktop file browser (Named "Files" in ubuntu menu):
ctl+l and typing the address "ssh://untuserver.somedomain.com". Then
using the file browser to open a file and later trying to save it.
Saving the file fails. It seems Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 version is no
longer compatible with Ubuntu server.

[Bug 1750146] Re: Xbox (One) Wireless Controller won't connect

2020-05-09 Thread Sami Pietila
I have the latest Ubuntu 20.04 and it also seems to have this bug. There
are workarounds, but I think it should work out of the box like it does
on Windows. It is weird to have this kind of bug as Xbox One controller
might just be the most popular controller and these kinds of issues
prevent people from gaming on Linux.

This is not dependent on our puppet modules, but the puppet and ruby versions
in Focal, which seem to be incompatible. To be more precise, the ruby version
is too high for puppet:
https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/PUP-10247

This is highly inconvenient because currently we don't really know what
works and what doesn't.

[Bug 1813441] Re: Can no longer drag and drop files between desktop and applications

2020-04-26 Thread sami
Here is a workaround for ubuntu 20.04:
1. remove gnome extension `sudo rm -r
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/desktop-icons@csoriano/`
2. install nemo: see
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/158#alternative-solution and
replace `dnf` with `apt`.

Current gnome desktop-icons extension is useless because you just can't
interact with icons. I really don't get it how it came into an LTS
release... :-(

[Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.

2019-10-27 Thread Sami Karhula
Restarting gdm3 seems to be a workaround if autologin is needed. I
entered that into /etc/rc.local and after gdm restarts autologin enabled
user will be logged in normally.

[Bug 1806257] Re: gnome-shell excessive logging cannot bind to x11-unix

2019-08-21 Thread Sami Farin
gnome-shell's failure to bind can also be caused by namespace.conf settings,
currently gdm/gnome-shell etc do not take this into account, breaking gdm which
worked fine without wayland.
https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man5/namespace.conf.5.html

Now, if you have in that file:
/tmp/tmp/tmp-inst/ userroot,adm
gdm etc write their files to /tmp/.X0-lock /tmp/.X11-unix/ and so on, but
gnome-shell tries to open the files at /tmp/tmp-inst/luser/.X11-unix/ (after
private namespaces have been polyinstantiated).

[Bug 1818204] Re: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wireless does not work

2019-04-09 Thread Sami Pietila
I further tested this new 4.18.0-18-generic kernel and with this kernel
the wifi seems to work very good. I did not observe any slowness as I
did with the patched 4.18.0-16 kernel.

Now dist-upgrade found that kernel. I can confirm, with this kernel
rfkill reports the device unblocked.

[Bug 1818204] Re: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wireless does not work

2019-04-07 Thread Sami Pietila
Hi,

I think I have enabled pre-released updates. Is the kernel version
(4.18.0-17-generic), the one that should have this patch?

I am wondering because wifi does not seem to work with this kernel.

Thank

2019-04-05 Thread Sami Pietila
Hi

How do I test the proposed patch? I enabled backports. Then did apt
update & apt dist-upgrade.

My Linux version is:
Linux 530s 4.18.0-17-generic #18~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 15 15:27:12 UTC

 1 bluetooth ideapad_bluetooth unblocked blocked
 2 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked
 3 wlan phy0blocked unblocked

With 4.18.0-17 the wifi is hard blocked.

[Bug 1818204] Re: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wireless does not work

2019-03-28 Thread Sami Pietila
Hi,

I tested with only the patched kernel and it enables wifi.

However, there still seems to be something weird happening. Even though,
the wifi seems to work, it might take from seconds to minutes for a web
page to load. It feels like having a bad connection, but in a mixed way.
For example, it might take long time to get into youtube and have video
running, but the video then might run ok. With MS Windows, the wifi
works well and there are no delays.
