[Bug 529502] Re: cryptsetup luksClose fails with busy

2011-06-01 Thread scar
i have this issue too on lucid with cryptsetup 2:1.1.0~rc2-1ubuntu13
although the suggested work-around does not work for me. i've plugged
in an external disk taken out of another ubuntu installation:

$ sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sde5 sde5_crypt
(this makes available the -root and -swap partitions in /dev/mapper)

$ sudo mount /dev/mapper/laptop-root /mnt/laptop-root
(now i have just moved some files from the partition and am ready to unmount)

$ sudo umount /mnt/laptop-root/
$ sudo cryptsetup luksClose sde5_crypt
Device sde5_crypt is busy.
$

is there any way to cleanly remove the drive without shutting down the
whole system??

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

upon shutting down or rebooting the system, either through the menu or

terminated correctly. i've noticed the following after rebooting:

because, after opening openoffice, it prompts me to 'recover' documents

yes. whenever i reboot the system or logout/in (start a new gnome

[Bug 609953] [NEW] OpenVPN certificate selection broken / cannot connect to VPN after it is created

2010-07-26 Thread scar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

ubuntu lucid 10.04 network-manager 0.8-0ubuntu3

i have successfully setup an OpenVPN connection on debian lenny which
uses NM 0.6.6. that is where i also generated the certificates and
private keys, using tinyca 0.7.5-2.

now i am trying to setup the same OpenVPN connection on ubuntu 10.04. i
copied over the certificates and private keys to this box, and i
installed network-manager-openvpn-gnome package (which also installed
network-manager-openvpn package). then i went to create a new VPN.
after filling in all of the required info, and selecting the
certificates, i clicked Apply button. i also restarted network-manager.
the VPN connection does not show up in the list of available connections
(left-click on NM icon).

when i go back to check the VPN's setting, the certificates have been
changed. for example, the User Certificate is now set to my ~/sbin
folder. when i click on that to try and change it to the correct
certificate file, i am unable to select the file (clicking on the file
does nothing). when i click the Open button, it seems to open a folder.
if i go back to try to pick the certificate, i can. now i click apply
and then immediately go back to edit the VPN connection, and the
certificates have been changed again to different folders or filenames.

it's very weird. i tried to delete the VPN connection and recreate it,
no luck. i also tried to export the VPN connection from the debian
computer and import it on the ubuntu computer. when i try that, NM
says:

The file 'VPN.pcf' could not be read or does not contain recognized VPN
connection information

Error: unknown OpenVPN file extension.

so, this whole thing seems broken.

[Bug 605250] [NEW] new tabs open with default font size

2010-07-13 Thread scar
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 572648 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572648

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

i have version 2.29.6-0ubuntu5 installed in ubuntu 10.04. previous
versions did not have this behavior. i do not believe this is a
duplicate of bug #537059 nor #300759, but may be related in the code...

steps to reproduce:
1. open new terminal window and adjust the font (^- for example)
2. open a new tab. the new tab is opened with the default font size.

thus, the font for this tab needs to be adjusted to match the other
tab's font, and then the window must also be resized.

in previous versions, the new tab would open with the same font size as
the original window, thus not needing any further action.

[Bug 551965] Re: BIOS hang - Unable to boot after installation

2010-06-13 Thread scar
is this related/the same as the problem i have described on the ubuntu-
server mailing list[1][2]?

i did not have any problems booting a freshly-installed ubuntu-server
system around May 1, 2010, but then a couple weeks later, on a second
server with identical hardware, the BIOS hung trying to detect the
disks. the same thing happened (BIOS hanging) again on a third,
identical server. after deleting the partitions on the disks, i tried
last week to re-install ubuntu-server but BIOS hung again. today, i
tried re-installing with the network cable unplugged since i thought it
might have to do with an updated package the installer was downloading.
still no luck.

[Bug 569599] Re: KVM Networking doesn't mention the need for qemu to be installed

2010-04-26 Thread scar
Yes, I am. None of the /usr/bin/qemu-system-* binaries were present on
my system. I searched for 'qemu-system' or something on
packages.ubuntu.com and found that they belonged to the 'qemu' package.
When i installed the 'qemu' package, those binaries were available and i
was able to continue with the guide to setup bridged networking.

[Bug 569599] [NEW] KVM Networking doesn't mention the need for qemu to be installed

2010-04-24 Thread scar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The page here:

seems to assume that package 'qemu' is installed (that is where /usr/bin
/qemu-system-* files are contained). However, there is no mention there
nor in the previous pages about the need to install the 'qemu' package.

[Bug 561108] [NEW] conky doesn't parse # when using execp function

2010-04-11 Thread scar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: conky

ubuntu 9.10
conky 1.7.2-0ubuntu5

to test, create a file like ~/foo with a few lines:
1#2#3#4#5
67890
10#11#12
131415

now put into your conky config file something like
${execp tail -n 10 ~/foo}

observe that the output is:
167890
10131415

this is a problem because i am actually tail'ing /var/log/messages and
/var/log/syslog and so the output is malformed whenever a # sign shows up in
those log files.

i have been living with this problem for years, never occurred to me it

load cycle with a human readable number, but it is definitely
increasing:

i am using ubuntu 9.04 with acpi-support 0.121, and i have enabled laptop mode
in /etc/default/acpi-support

it doesn't seem to have helped, but i understand it is only supposed to
help when on battery power?

this laptop remains stationary and on AC power, so i would like to also
hear about a solution for this scenario.

2010-01-27 Thread scar
hi, this was caused due to insufficient space left on /boot

as i was unable to run synaptic to remove the old kernels (i was told to
manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. which
failed), i just deleted some of the old files in boot:

boot$ sudo rm *2.6.27-11*
boot$ sudo rm *2.6.27-14*

this freed up enough space so that 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' could be
run

i am unsure why such old kernels were kept, i thought those were
automatically cleaned up.

[Bug 513065] [NEW] gmplayer doesn't retain correct aspect ratio when window is resized

2010-01-26 Thread scar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

mplayer 2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu19
ubuntu 9.04

when i watch a video using gmplayer and then resize the video window,
the window is allowed to be resized to any aspect ratio (to which the
video is then stretched to fit), causing a distorted video.

when i watch a video using mplayer (from the command line, for example),
resizing the window maintains the correct aspect ratio.

i cannot find where i read it, but i think the ability for the window to
maintain the aspect ratio is determined with hints, which i guess
gmplayer is not utilizing.

[Bug 383443] Re: vlc stops playing flac file

2009-11-04 Thread scar
when tested again using vlc 1.0.1-1ubuntu1 on ubuntu 9.04 and the same 96 kHz
24-bit flac file, this is no longer happening. although i still get a number
of:
[0xa059cb8] main audio output debug: audio output is starving (11766), playing
silence
[0xa059cb8] alsa audio output debug: recovered from buffer underrun

which is causing 'skipping'.

however, a different 96 kHz 24-bit flac file is still stopping in the
middle of playback with vlc 1.0.1-1ubuntu1. this file was created in
the same way as the first file, i.e. exported from audacity 1.3.5-2
running on ubuntu 8.10. it stops at the same point every time, at about
6:12 (out of 11:04 total). i set verbosity to 2 and have attached the
output.

the file stopped playing and the message at line 213 was displayed.
several seconds passed and then the rest of the messages showed up, then
i closed vlc.

[Bug 420858] [NEW] W.T.F. cannot insert any objects

2009-08-28 Thread scar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glabels

glabels 2.2.3 on ubuntu 9.04

i have created a new project from the avery 28373 template.

i click on the button for 'create image object' and click somewhere on
the page.

i get a checkerboard area and on the right side i am to select the image
to use. so i browse to the image, which is a png stored in my Documents
directory. nothing happens, and the image object disappears. i see the
filename is shown next to the File area. when i click to the 'size'
tab the size is 0x0. so, i try to resize to something substantial.
nothing happens. the 'position' tab shows -2 and -3 inches, so i try
changing both to 1. nothing happens.

i try to insert a text object. i see the default Text displayed. i go
over to the right size and edit the text. the text on the page changes
fine. however, as soon as i go to the 'style' tab and change something,
the text object disappears.

i try to insert a box, line, or circle object. when i click on the
document, it inserts a default object. as soon as i try to change the
color on the right side, the object disappears.

very frustrating! we need to create some business cards for our
business (duh).

please help ASAP

thanks.

happening for every video i've been trying to play.

i notice from the other posts that this may be network related. so, i
will tell you i am using a laptop which has a wireless card in it. it
is associated with my AP and connects automatically upon bootup.
however, due to the instability of it (it is based on the ralink rt2860
chipset), i have hardwired my laptop to my router with a cat-5 cable.
upon bootup, i usually disable the wireless by selecting that option
from the right-click menu of the network manager icon, forcing the
laptop to use the ethernet. so that might be causing some problem.
however, i've been using this method for some time and i don't think
i've had problems with totem/youtube for that long

[Bug 242302] Re: Small PDF files are scaled up to papersize when printed

2009-08-01 Thread scar
i believe i am having a related issue, but let me know if i should file
a new report.

however, the problem i am having has to do with scaling down the printed
page, it seems.

i am trying to print a precise alignment protractor for aligning a
turntable's cartridge (attached).

the page comes with two lines on it, AA' and BB', which, when printed,
should measure exactly 140mm and 200mm, respectively.

i have the scaling set to 100% in the print options/page setup. when
the PDF is printed in evince (which is 2.24.1 on ubuntu 8.10), the two
lines are quite a bit shorter than should be.

printing the document using adobe reader for linux (which is version
8.1.3 (outdated, but probably doesn't matter)) on the same computer,
with options page scaling: none and auto rotate and center:
unchecked prints the PDF in the correct dimensions. portions of the
document get cut off (notably the bottom), probably because the document
is for A4 paper, but i only have 8.5x11. i don't see any spot to
specify the type of paper to use, so it could be as simple as adding an
option to select the paper size.

for me, neither the 2.1.2.0 nor the patched 2.1.2.0 worked. i couldn't
connect to anything, open networks, WEP, WPA, and WPA2. i have no idea
why this is happening. only thing i can think of is the RT2860STA.dat
file i am using (defined here

been using that dat file for a long time now and it has been good. i

maybe from the 1.8.0.0 driver.

[Bug 355846] Re: audacity stops recording after about a second when using software play-through

2009-05-27 Thread scar
this happens to me whether or not 'software playthrough' is enabled.
also, the same behavior occurs when just monitoring the input. i.e. the
monitor will show some activity and then stop responding--freeze.

is it the same bug? can you verify if recording works with software
playthrough disabled? because it doesn't for me.

i have audacity 1.3.7-1~intrepid1~8.10prevu1 on ubuntu 8.10
2.6.27-14-generic x86_64

forcing the version back to 1.3.5-2 has gotten rid of the problem, and i

[Bug 335615] Re: Marvell 88SE6121 not supported

2009-05-25 Thread scar
i followed the instructions on http://wiki.debian.org/pata_marvell and
now my two disks are being detected as /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd. however,
i have them setup in a RAID-1 using the Marvell option ROM , in the
BIOS. so, shouldn't linux see it as one device? does that mean i am a
victim of this bug?

i am using ubuntu 8.10 with linux 2.6.27-14-generic. i actually have
the 88SE6121, so i am confused by Stephen Hemminger's comments regarding
the 6440. i notice in lspci it says the controller is using the 'ahci'
kernel module, shouldn't that be raid or something?

[Bug 339891] Re: [Jaunty] wireless rt2860 not connecting to WPA

2009-05-23 Thread scar
i believe i went through the process of installing the patch correctly.
reason i am skeptical is because, after installing the patch, re-
compiling, and re-installing the rt2860 module, i was unable to connect
to any wireless networks. i could see them listed in network manager
but no connection could be established. i tried open networks, WEP,
WPA, and WPA2. after undoing the patch, i was able to establish
connections again. personally, i have been able to connect to my WPA2
network, but only when i tell the router to use only AES cipher, and not
AES+TKIP (i think just TKIP might work as well). however, there are
other WPA/WPA2 wifi networks that i haven't been able to connect to.
presumably, they are using a mixed cipher.

[Bug 282214] Re: Nvidia does not work with Geforce 6100

2009-05-12 Thread scar
apparently, i did not quite remove all the modules. even tho the nvidia
driver compiles the kernel module, apparently it doesn't get used unless
the other modules are removed. running 'apt-get remove --purge nvidia*'
beforehand did the trick. i now have 185.18.04 installed. however, i
still cannot use 1280x1024 resolution. the monitor supports that mode.
it is a dell 1901fp and i was using that mode in ms windows. the only
thing i see above that i haven't tried is starting with ubuntu 8.04 and
upgrading to 8.10 and then 9.04?? how ridiculous ;) i'm not going to do
that. is that really necessary? there is obviously something related
to nvidia/xorg that is in place on ubuntu 8.04 that doesn't get wiped
away due to the upgrade process, i would guess. isn't there a way to
force 1280x1024 in xorg.conf or something? this seems so simple...

[Bug 374571] Re: no brightness hotkeys on sony pcg-tr3a

2009-05-12 Thread scar
forgot to mention that most of the other Fn hotkeys work:

Fn+ESC = suspend
Fn+F3 = lowers volume / mutes
Fn+F4 = raises volume
Fn+F7 = appears to try to switch displays (don't have an external display to
test with but the screen flickers)
Fn+F12 = hibernate
Fn+up = Pg Up
Fn+down = Pg Down
Fn+left = Home
Fn+right = End

these don't work:

Fn+Num Lock = Scroll Lock

not tested:

Fn+Print Screen = Sys Rq
Fn+Insert = Pause
Fn+Delete = Break

additionally, there are some other buttons on the right side of the screen,
none of which function:

capture = load web cam
vol+ = increase volume
vol- = decrease volume
magnify = reduce screen resolution

[Bug 374571] [NEW] no brightness hotkeys on sony pcg-tr3a

2009-05-10 Thread scar
Public bug reported:

after upgrading to jaunty, the brightness hotkeys no longer work on this
sony pcg-tr3a laptop. the default behavior, when using ms windows and
the ms windows hotkey driver, is for Fn+F5 to activate the brightness
control, then use left and right arrows to adjust. in intrepid, it was
simply Fn+F5 to lower the brightness and Fn+F6 to raise the brightness.
not such a big deal, since Fn+F6 is not needed for anything. now, Fn+F5
and Fn+F6 do nothing. gnome-power-manager can adjust the brightness
fine, it seems, as when i unplug the AC power the brightness is reduced,
and raised again when plugged back in.

ok i tried the following method, mentioned above:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.04-pkg1.run
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

but it didn't work. i am seeing this message in the kernel log:

NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 185.18.04, but
NVRM: this kernel module has the version 180.51. Please
NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver

i tried removing all nvidia drivers, modules, etc. with synaptic, but i
think that was still the error.

[Bug 228599] Re: OpenOffice.org default font replaced - unable to change

2009-01-23 Thread scar
when opening openoffice calc, i noticed that instead of using the
default font of Arial, it was using the corrupted font. that is, to
say, the font selected in the drop-down list was already set to the
corrupted font. so, it was easy to see what the name of the corrupted
font was. this may have been mentioned in the original bug report, but
i can't decipher it.

fontforge was able to fix the font simply by opening and re-saving the
font (or it is actually called generate font i believe).

that must have been the last corrupted font i had because now Arial is
displaying like Arial.

[Bug 228599] Re: OpenOffice.org default font replaced - unable to change

2009-01-18 Thread scar
i have this issue too. before i found this bug entry, i searched
through the thousands of fonts i transferred over from my old windows
machine to see which was causing the problem. (of course it was one of
the last ones ;) )

like is mentioned above, if i remove the y2k font, another buggy font
takes center stage to replace arial.

so i probably have several of these buggy fonts, and the only way i know
how to find them is by looking thru the list manually by eye with an app
like 'fonty python'.

first, then, i was wondering, is there a script or app that can scan
thru all the fonts to see which ones are buggy?

second, is there an app that can be used to edit the font and correct
the bugginess?

[Bug 318017] [NEW] withvisualize filter option activated, vlc hangs when invoked with file name

2009-01-16 Thread scar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

filed by typing ubuntu-bug PID with PID of frozen vlc process.

when the vlc option Visualization is set to Visualize filter
(located in Tools Preferences, Simple: Audio, or All: Audio
Visualization) and vlc is invoked with a file name (for example, on the
command line vlc my_mp3.mp3, or by double-clicking a file if vlc has
been set as default to open that file type), vlc does not open but hangs
and must by kill -9'd.

tested with various mp3 and flac audio files. deleted ~/.vlc and
started with default settings. this option triggers a hang with invoked
with a file name.

when not invoked with a file name argument (for example, on the command
line vlc, or by starting from Applications Sound and Video), vlc
will open fine. also, after an audio file is opened from within vlc, it
will play the file and show the visualizations properly.

The source package you found the bug in, for help see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage :
vlc-nox: /usr/bin/vlc

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
About Ubuntu:
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename'
or by checking in Synaptic:
vlc-nox:
  Installed: 0.9.4-1ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.9.4-1ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.4-1ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/multiverse Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen:
vlc opens and starts playing the media, and displays the visualization

4) What happened instead:
vlc does not open, but hangs, kill -9 is required.

i have tried running a backtrace, but i get to the part in the wiki where it
says If the program hangs but doesn't crash you can press ctrl+c in gdb while
the program is frozen and then continue with the next step. however, i have
pressed ^C but i am not returned to a gdb prompt and cannot continue with the
next step.

[Bug 266927] Re: Static sound on hda-intel STAC 9221 A1

2009-01-06 Thread scar
gosh, after deciding to stop using windows, this linux stuff is
impressing me but also disappointing me quite a bit :( especially for a
new user like me, it's really time-consuming to deal with things like
this that i don't think i should be dealing with is it my
headphones? no is it the front audio connection in my new case? no..
is it my new motherboard? no, it seems to be related to a kernel
module, as executing the following commands got rid of the static:

$ pulseaudio -k
$ sudo service alsa-utils stop
$ sudo rmmod snd_hda_intel
$ sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel
$ sudo service alsa-utils start
$ pulseaudio -D

(had to kill mixer_applet2 and any other apps using the audio devices)

i don't have an intel audio device, but am still using that kernel
module apparently. maybe the device (details below) is using some intel
chip

ubuntu 8.10 with linux 2.6.27-9-generic

i have been using ubuntu for a few months now and have not noticed this
until today.

[Bug 197499] Re: Exported filesystems do not allow spaces

2008-12-16 Thread scar
confirmed here with ubuntu 8.10 and nfs-kernel-server 1:1.1.2-4ubuntu1.1
and nfs-common 1:1.1.2-4ubuntu1.1

tried using an export point with a space, defined inside quotes or with
backslash-040

both exportfs and nfs-kernel-server return Warning: export point does
not support NFS export.

when the export point is renamed to not contain a space, and
/etc/exports is updated accordingly, the export point is exported
successfully

actually, chad succinctly summed it up in the original report ;)
