[Bug 1974068] [NEW] Touchpad tapping not working after upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04
Public bug reported: I have an Intel NUC pc with Ubuntu, recently upgraded to 22.04. I use a Logitech wireless keyboard K830 with integrated touchpad. After the Ubuntu upgrade the tapping function (emulating left mouse- click) of the touchpad doesn't work anymore. I can move the screen arrow around by using the touchpad, but for mouse clicking I have to use the button below the touchpad, which is very awkward. Moving the screen arrow around by sweeping and clicking an object by tapping, all on the touchpad is very much more convenient. So please fix this! [Bug 1748988] [NEW] Random total system freezes (resolved)
Public bug reported: I have an Intel 7260 WiFi card in my desktop (lspci output: 09:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev bb)), running 18.04. All the way since 17.04 I have experienced random freezes, where the entire system would be unresponsive, I was unable to Ctrl+Alt+F1 to a different console, and I couldn't connect to it via ssh. After upgrading to 17.10 (and a fresh install of 17.10), and subsequently upgrading to 18.04, the issue intensified, appearing at least hourly, often quicker than that, and only a hard reset would let me access my system again. The issue is also present in Linux Mint 18.3. Freezes could happen at any time, regardless of usage (or just idling). After getting a tip that this might be caused by the WiFi card, I looked at the provided firmware from Intel's site, and compared the files to the files present in /lib/firmware/. The file provided by Intel for my specific card is iwlwifi-7260-14.ucode, but the files present in the folder were the numbers 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, and 17. Downloading the firmware from Intel, and adding the -14 file to the folder solved the issue of the screen freezing, and the issue has not appeared for the ten hours I've been running since applying the fix. [Bug 1633838] [NEW] Garbled display after resuming from suspend
Public bug reported: Every time I resume from suspend, my display is garbled (looks a bit like the loading screen from a Commodore 64). A "sudo service lightdm restart" from a different console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) fixes the issue, but logs me out of the session as well. I get past the login screen, and sometimes the display is fine for about a minute or so, but it inevitably garbles up. The artifacts shift when I move my mouse, and will occasionally have a clear picture for a frame or two, or if my mouse is in a specific point, and not moving. This error was not present before I upgraded my system from an AMD RadeonHD 6870 to an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, and I therefore believe this is a bug in the nvidia drivers, rather than lightdm itself. Re: [Bug 981936] Re: 1217:00f7 Firewire prevents booting
I don't want to install an alpha version on my machine therefore I've tried with USB boot stick instead using 13.10 and 14.01 (trusty-desktop-i386.iso04-Jan-2014 07:51 ). Both fails on exactly the same line when booting without the splash screen. firewire_ohci failed to set power level and then everything halts - keyboard unresponsive. The USB stick boots fine on other machines. If I add the blacklist=firewire_ohci to the commandline boot it loads a bit further, but halts later on it seems like its loading the firewire_ohci disregarding the boot option. Guess its an USB stick boot design issue. Since I cant boot from the stick, I cant run the apport command. Cant you use the original attached apport ?. My hardware hasn't changed. As long as the kernel issue remains unfixed I don't see how newer versions of ubuntu could fix this ?. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43244 I think Rob Allan did a bisect and found a pretty precise commit in the 3.1.0-rc2 3.1.0-rc3 kernel that caused the issue. Some firewire refactoring. On Sun, 2013-12-29 at 19:55 +, Christopher M. Penalver wrote: Sten Bennetsen, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. Same problem on my machine running lubuntu 12.10. An update-notifier process is running and byobu's notification bar shows that new updates are available. [Bug 981936] Re: Firewire prevents booting
Found a work-around : Disable the firewire module from loading during boot. edit: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-firewire.conf uncommented the line: blacklist firewire-ohci Run: sudo update-initramfs -k all -u Im now able to boot the release kernel 3.2.0-24 without any problem only downside is no firewire support. [Bug 981936] Re: Firewire prevents booting
I've tried following the guide but I always end up loosing the ubuntu specific folders for doing a build when bisecting. Heres what I've done: git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-precise.git sudo apt-get build-dep linux-image-$(uname -r) -- this would then be the 3.0.0-17 stuff Everything is fine and I can run the commands - fakeroot debian/rules clean - fakeroot debian/rules binary-headers binary-generic Because the debian/rules aso is present. Then I start bisecting: git bisect start Ubuntu-3.2.0-1.1 Ubuntu-3.0.0-1402.3 Now I cant build because the debian/rules stuff is gone. How do I build and/or get the debian/rules stuff back without resetting bisection. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/981936 Title: Firewire prevents booting To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/981936/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 981936] Re: Firewire prevents booting
I cannot reinstall the system using the iso images as I have data I do not want to delete on this machine. I did intall the linux-image-3.4.0-999-generic_3.4.0-999.201204150427_i386.deb + headers and the booting problem persists. - It stops at the same place as the previously attached jpeg shows. I have to power off the machine in order to get it to work again crtl+alt+del does nothing. I think the developer have to investigate this firewire set link power level problem. The problem must have been introduced after 3.0.0-17 and at latest 3.2.0-23 since the problem can be reproduced in 3.2.0-23 and above. I tried doing the apport thingy but it threw an error in the process so Im not sure all data got attached. ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/981936 Title: Firewire prevents booting To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/981936/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 981936] Re: Firewire prevents booting
The problem persists of halting boot on firewire initialization. It appears from the package description that the kernel is 64 bit (Linux kernel image for version 3.2.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP ) But my machine is a Intel Duo T2300 (32-bit) which should then be a Linux kernel image for version 3.2.0 on 32 bit x86 SMP . - How did a 64 bit kernel get onto my 32 bit system - serious problem or wrong package description ?!. The 3.0.0.17 kernel im running on now is 32/64 bit according to the description (Linux kernel image for version 3.0.0 on x86/x86_64) but no SMP in the description though both processors are utilized.

[Bug 578557] [NEW] getifaddrs calls abort() when interrupted
Public bug reported: getifaddrs is a function to fetch a list of network interfaces. [Bug 544505] Re: buggy window operations with GTK 2.18 [proposed patch]
Hi Niels, End of the academic semester, so I haven't had time to look into this more, and unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll be able to answer your question before 10.04 ships. If my memory serves correctly, I got as far as debugging undefined classes, because the XMind project didn't successfully import/link the drawing primitives library. Does SWT provide these? Yeah, so I'll have to learn enough java to debug Xmind's code, using an IDE that I'm not familiar with at all. If you have the time, and you would like to close this bug very quickly, I suspect that this code snippet, with one minor modification, will reveal if this bug is valid or not: http://www.java2s.com/Code/Java/SWT-JFace-Eclipse/Openashellmaximizedfullscreen.htm It seems like if shell.setMaximized(true) is changed to something like shell.setFullScreen(true), then the resulting simple application will test for this bug. Basically, I'd see if our Eclipse/SWT/GTK stack successfully gets metacity to toggle NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN for the java-created window. If this succeeds, then I would test to see what happens when a new fullscreen window is created from within the class of an existing non-fullscreen window. This two window scenario, where the first window remains non-fullscreen, and the second window can only exist fullscreen, will definitely show if this bug can be closed. If the second, new fullscreen window covers the gnome panel...well, I guess this reporting bug was kind of pointless then! [Bug 481576] Re: Action on critical battery is not triggered - gnome-power-manager
I'm running Karmic, and am still experiencing this bug. I'll try bumping the time_action and time_critical values to more conservative settings, and will post an update soon. As I have an old battery, my Thinkpad's critical power level is around 5%. Hibernate should occur at 4%, or 3% at the absolute lowest. A time-based value seems better for a wider range of battery capacities, but the default 120 and 300 seconds are just too low. -- Action on critical battery is not triggered - gnome-power-manager https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/481576 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I recently installed took Slackware for a spin just for kicks. What I noticed was that the Linux kernel *already* outputs resume from hibernate status, as a percentage. Something like: Resuming from hibernate: 15% The 15% redraws over itself. I imagine that resume from hibernate exports this value, so we should be able to hook into it for said progress bar. Mark, thanks again for your logs! adneto: does your connection remain stable over time? After 15min to an hour, kernels which produce those PHY transmission error crash my wireless router. I'm posting some links to some kernels which might work. Please do not enable the PPA, as synaptic will push multiple kernel upgrades onto your system over time. Here's a link to the Ubuntu kernel team's build of the 2.6.30-series kernel that works flawlessly for me: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30.4/linux-image-2.6.30-02063004-generic_2.6.30-02063004_i386.deb and the headers http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30.4/linux-headers-2.6.30-02063004-generic_2.6.30-02063004_i386.deb I'm currently very busy with work, and the end of my summer term, if anybody has an hour or so of free time, would they please consider running these tests to begin to pinpoint which kernel version fixed this bug?: First, confirm that the above linked kernel works. Then try this one: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29.6/linux-image-2.6.29-02062906-generic_2.6.29-02062906_i386.deb and the headers http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29.6/linux-headers-2.6.29-02062906-generic_2.6.29-02062906_i386.deb and then this one http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29/linux-image-2.6.29-020629-generic_2.6.29-020629_i386.deb and the headers http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29/linux-headers-2.6.29-020629-generic_2.6.29-020629_i386.deb linux-2.6.28.10 still has the bug. Once we find the kernel closest to Jaunty's which has a functional b43 driver, it should be possible to backport a fix. I'm going to open a bug at bugzilla.kernel.org after we've assembled enough information for them to be able to fix it. Fact: not all the Ubuntu CDs that Joe-random-new-user finds are going to be the Hardy release. Just the other day I saw Jaunty CDs in the faculty of *English Literature* department lounge at my university. There's a fair chance Joe-random-new-user's NIC won't work, and he'll have a bad first experience with Ubuntu. Asking him (or her) why he didn't use another release won't mean anything to him, because he doesn't yet know anything about Ubuntu... Please test these three kernels (2.6.30.4, 2.6.29.6, and 2.6.29) and report back with what works. Don't worry about logs for this yet, it's just a pragmatic test to find out when b43 started to work again. [Bug 263106] Re: Post-Hardy regression: b43 and bcm94311 disconnects due to PHY transmission error
For everyone who's following this thread, this message contains instructions for what is either an instant solution, or failing that: the very-near-future solution. No worries Mark! Honestly, this sort of thing drives me up the wall...a computer, by definition, is supposed to take input from somewhere, feed it into an equation, and then *always* output the correct result. Computers just aren't computers anymore, when they fail us... So for myself, it's back to a custom kernel, like the old times in the '90s. As for everyone else: If your NIC worked in Hardy, it will work in Karmic, just about guaranteed. Karmic is linux-2.6.31, and b43 works just fine in linux-2.6.30. As linux-2.6.31 is still in pre-release, I wouldn't recommend tracking the Koala's kernels... There's still one thing I haven't tried -- The soon-to-be-released Jaunty 2.6.28-14: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/linux- image-2.6.28-14-generic_2.6.28-14.47_i386.deb I'm linking to them directly so that no one has to enable to proposed repository. These kernels are currently in jaunty-proposed. I haven't looked at the 2.6.28-13 to 2.6.28-14 patch very closely, so I don't know if the B43 driver in this kernel is from linux-2.6.30; however the kernel team is working hard to backport a functional b43 driver! Now is the perfect time to test this new kernel, and help the kernel team shake out any remaining bugs with the backport of a better b43 driver. Oh yeah, here's the hack I use, because I don't use Network Manager: 1. put b43 in your /etc/modules. My BCM4318 takes so long to initialise after it gets the firmware that it ignores the networking commands it gets from /etc/rcS.d/S40networking But /etc/modules is the easiest place to load the firmware early (trust me, I've been tinkering with custom initrd images for the last hour) 2. You're half-way there. If you use Network Manager, than that's it! 'hope it works for you. 3. If you don't use Network Manager, wicd, etc, and have your networking info permanently stored in /etc/network/interfaces (this is the opposite of a roaming network profile), then you might want to try making these modifications to /etc/rc.local first, remove that exit 0 line if you still have it -- it's no longer useful. then add the following towards the end of the file: ifdown wlan0; sleep 2; ifup wlan0 Obligatory car analogy: when you jump in your car in the morning in the middle of winter, turn the key, and your car doesn't start -- oh, your hear the engine try, but it turns over just once before going back to sleep...well, the ifdown wlan0 is when you back off on the starter, sleep 2 waits for two seconds, and then ifup wlan0 gives it another go. Yeah, it's a hack, but at least it works reliably for me... 'hope it works for you. WHOA!?! Jaunty-auto-update popup. linux-image-2.6.28-14 was just released...if it didn't fix b43, make post the latest of all the logs you're supposed to. Last-minute post-release minor bugfixes are quite common 2.6.28-14.46 to .47, and maybe a .48 if it's needed. -- Post-Hardy regression: b43 and bcm94311 disconnects due to PHY transmission error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/263106 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 405712] [NEW] linux-backports-modules-jaunty: b43 and ssb regression
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-backports-modules Background: I have a PCI BCM4318 which worked flawlessly with Hardy, with the b43 module. I didn't test it when upgrading through Intrepid to Jaunty, so the following might also affect Intrepid. WIth Jaunty it has the forever-repeating: b43-phy0 ERROR: PHY transmission error during which the connection becomes unresponsive, or is dropped The Bug: Strangely, linux-backports-modules-jaunty-2.6.28-11 and *-2.6.28-13 are even worse. No IP-level link at all. No ping. Route times out like there is a break in the physical layer... Also, very, very strangely, the backports-modules version of ssb and/or b43 now load the pcmcia subsystem -- when it's absolutely not needed for my NIC. This run-of-the-mill Linksys 802.11g PCI NIC isn't one of those PCMCIA/Cardbus-to-PCI adapters. lspci -v -v reports: 02:01.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) Subsystem: Linksys Device 0042 Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- INTx- Latency: 32 Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 22 Region 0: Memory at f980 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K] Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge Kernel modules: ssb This is wrong...I'm almost certain that it used to say that the b43 kernel driver or module was in use, in addition to the ssb. Additionally, that b43-pci-bridge sounds a lot like the a module for the type of card I don't have. Did the PCI IDs get scrambled somewhere? Please advise which logs you need me to post. Thanks! [Bug 405712] Re: linux-backports-modules-jaunty: b43 and ssb regression
Wow was I off with the b43-pci-bridge idea! At any rate, I decided to roll a custom, very lean 2.6.30.3 vanilla kernel to use as a baseline (and so I might have something that works if all else fails). b43 works marvelously. I'll post my logs. Next I'll try 2.6.28.10 vanilla and post those. If you would prefer for me to test a different 2.6.28.xy please mention which revision.qq Then I'll post logs for linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic with linux-backports-modules installed. And then without. All comments will contain: 1. `uname -a` 2. `dmesg dmesg.log` 3. `lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log` (as root) 'hopefully the logs from all of these will encircle and help us to isolate where exactly the problem is. Please advise me which debugging opions I ought to enable. A few backtraces would probably make it much easier, but I don't know anything about kernel-specific debugging... -- linux-backports-modules-jaunty: b43 and ssb regression https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/405712 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

P.S. I just remembered that this bug was originally simply going to be to show the differences between 2.6.8.13 and 2.6.8.13-with-backports. Sorry! bugs 405712, 297959, and 263106 all look like b43 kernel module problems (as opposed to firmware problems) I'm not sure if they're simply duplicates, or some other type of relation... -- linux-backports-modules-jaunty: b43 and ssb regression https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/405712 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 263106] Re: Post-Hardy regression: b43 and bcm94311 disconnects due to PHY transmission error
Well, I compiled a custom 2.6.30.3 kernel, just to see if the current b43 driver works with the firmware Jaunty's fw-cutter downloads. It does work. Perfectly. As I've tried multiple other firmware sources, it seems evident to me this is an Intrepid and Jaunty bug -- I'll have to test a Karmic alpha one of these days to see if it's something which has been resolved. I'm running 32bit x86, P4 on a d865perl motherboard. So here are some facts: linux-image-2.6.24-24-generic ***works linux-image-2.6.30.3-vanilla ***works linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic ***flaky, and not usable linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic ***flaky, and not usable linux-backports-modules-jaunty ***completely broken, and b43 depends on pcmcia for this one?! Next I'll try 2.6.28.10 vanilla and post logs. If you would prefer for me to test a different 2.6.28.xy please mention which revision. [Bug 263106] Re: Post-Hardy regression: b43 and bcm94311 disconnects due to PHY transmission error
...that's odd... The linux-backports-modules-jaunty b43 driver is working!!! And better than linux-image 2.6.28-13, despite loading that pcmcia, and pcmcia_core -- are we using the pcmcia module as a shim between the updated kernel interface that the updated ssb needs, and the old interface the kernel provides? But why does it take over 30 seconds to log in with SSH? It should take less than one. This is so slow that nautilus times out when trying to connect with sftp. I tried disabling ipv6 with sysctl for linux- image-2.28-13. I did disable IPv6 in my kernel...
