Yes, I'm running a laptop; no, there's nothing strange about the
backlight in gnome-power-manager --verbose.
KMS is involved: a better workaround for me is to use i915.modeset=0 as
kernel option - no KMS, means quirks enabled, means backlight working
(with Japi's fix, that is; the 2372 type
For me and my X40 laptop, I use
i915.modeset=0
as kernel command line. This turns off KMS and restores the backlight.
BTW, this (417599) is bug 292256 in a new form. Should they be merged?

Ah well - you're right that font handling is odd in this case. However,
my feeling is that it makes no sense to have this as an Ubuntu bug
without the font files attached and without anyone caring. And nobody
cares: Canonical has closed the bug (proprietary font) and I (as first
submitter to
The bug (in different wording) is using debconf settings in dhcp3-server is
useless. The workaround (in different wording) is don't use debconf.
So the workaround above as sent by Valentijn Sessink (that's me :) is no more
than another way to state the bug.

rightclicking the underlined word to prove it. Ive already reported this
