[Bug 2060797] Re: df says Resource temporarily unavailable after kernel upgrade to 5.15.0-102

2024-04-10 Thread David UB Vaughan
I'm seeing the same on Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon 5.6.8 with kernel
5.15.0-102. Also noted that Thunderbird crashes on this kernal version
if its profiles are mounted via cifs.

appears to be a permissions issue

[Bug 1704735] [NEW] Chromium browser closes as soon as it is opened

2017-07-17 Thread Paul Vaughan
Public bug reported:

Was using Chromium as a second browser when it closed down unexpectedly.
Restarting the browser results in a brief flicker as the browser starts
up and then immediately closes again.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Go to this web page: http://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/edit/S1gkEMuoE-
Note that the above web page was the first one to crash on me, but after a
successful restart, it seems that the web browser can crash at any point.
2. The browser segfaults
3. I cannot reopen the browser

Running from a terminal produces the following:
paulvaughan@spectre-x360:~$ chromium-browser

Note that I have to delete ~/.config/chromium to get the browser to work
again, but how long it will then work for before it again crashes is
anyone's guess.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Just a minor point: Glen pointed out in comment #86 that the curl
command to get the patch files doesn't work.

I've done some playing around. For some reason 'curl
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=5681' doesn't work - but
'curl -L http://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=5681', which follows
the 302 redirect from 'http://bugzilla.xfce.org/...' to
'https://bugzilla.xfce.org/...', does work.

So it's possible to get the patches by issuing:

curl -L http://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=5681 > alexander-patch.diff
curl -L http://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=5723 > sean-patch.diff

Not my bailiwick, but I think Benjamin's comment means it's not
patch_ready.

Looks like it has come up for me as well.
I was performing the update from 14.04 to vivid

Is this a LibreOffice thing? Anybody else have libreoffice installed?

Not sure if its related, but after a reboot I now have no sound. aplay

I suspect the problem is SIGWINCH. I can reproduce this problem if I
resize or maximize the terminal window while snappy installs docker.

[Bug 1400960] [NEW] Problems with a snappy tour

2014-12-09 Thread Tom Vaughan
Public bug reported:

[This was also sent to snappy-de...@lists.ubuntu.com.]

Hi,

I followed the steps in the Launch Snappy locally with KVM on Linux
section on http://www.ubuntu.com/cloud/tools/snappy. Then I ran the
steps in the A snappy tour of Ubuntu Core! section on
http://www.ubuntu.com/cloud/tools/snappy. Sorry, I don't see a way to
link directly to these sections. I ran into a few problems. Please see
below.

kvm is running just fine, no errors.

This is on a 64-bit version of 14.10. I am running with LUKS encrypted
root partition and an ecryptfs encrypted home directory, if that's
relevant.

Thanks.

-Tom

[Bug 1400960] [NEW] Problems with a snappy tour

2014-12-09 Thread Tom Vaughan
Public bug reported:

[This was also sent to snappy-de...@lists.ubuntu.com.]

Hi,

I followed the steps in the Launch Snappy locally with KVM on Linux
section on http://www.ubuntu.com/cloud/tools/snappy. Then I ran the
steps in the A snappy tour of Ubuntu Core! section on
http://www.ubuntu.com/cloud/tools/snappy. Sorry, I don't see a way to
link directly to these sections. I ran into a few problems. Please see
below.

kvm is running just fine, no errors.

This is on a 64-bit version of 14.10. I am running with LUKS encrypted
root partition and an ecryptfs encrypted home directory, if that's
relevant.

Thanks.

-Tom

[Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-11-20 Thread Joshua Vaughan
Backup and then remove 50-synap* and 51-syn* files from
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
Create a file called 50-mtrack.conf containing the following

Section InputClass
MatchIsTouchpad true
Identifier Multitouch Touchpad
Driver mtrack
Option Sensitivity 1.4
Option IgnoreThumb true
#Option ButtonMoveEmulate false
Option ClickFinger1 1
Option ClickFinger2 3
#Option ClickFinger3 3
Option TapButton1 0
Option TapButton2 0
Option TapButton3 0
Option TapButton4 0
Option ScrollDistance 75
Option BottomEdge 30

EndSection

Then run
sudo restart lightdm

Touchpad works great apart from when two finger scrolling it doesn't you
can't flick

[Bug 1268365] Re: [Lenovo Thinkpad t440s] Touchpad periodically stops working

2014-02-06 Thread Jon Vaughan
Thanks for the last two comments - I got in touch with Jeroen who posted
the spinics forum post, and he said that the best way to confirm the
problem was to either boot into Windows 8 safe mode or boot Windows 7
from USB and see what happened there.

Under Windows 8 safe mode there was no perceptible problem but as soon
as I booted Windows 7 it was clear that there was an issue, and the
cursor set off uncontrollably after a few seconds use.

I called Lenovo and yesterday they fitted a new keyboard bezel (which
contains a new trackpad) and over a few hours use yesterday I have had
no further lost sync messages. This was definitely a hardware issue
and I'd like to thank everyone for their help in sorting it out.

[Bug 896922] Re: Lenovo L520 - psmouse.c: touchpad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync and stops working for seconds

2014-01-12 Thread Jon Vaughan
Although I await Mathias's reply, this is absolutely a current problem
for me on a recently purchased Thinkpad t440s with:

uname -a:
Linux mv8 3.11.0-15-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 9 18:17:04 UTC 2013 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What is it about the latest dev release / kernel that you believe will
fix this?

[Bug 1268365] [NEW] Thinkpad t440s touchpad / trackpoint periodically stop working

2014-01-12 Thread Jon Vaughan
Public bug reported:

Every 15 minutes or so, the cursor stops reacting to input from the
touchpad or trackpoint. Unfortunately this machine has a clickpad
instead of separate buttons and so it is impossible to use the machine
without the touchpad, which means that Ubuntu is virtually unusable. In
Windows on the same machine there is no problem.

OS: Ubuntu 13.10
Release:13.10 (All updates applied)
Machine: Lenovo Thinkpad T440s
Linux mv8 3.11.0-15-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 9 18:17:04 UTC 2013 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

In syslog you see:

Jan 12 19:08:43 mv8 kernel: [ 8460.304134] psmouse serio1: TouchPad at

To restart it you have to:

sudo rmmod psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse

[Bug 896922] Re: Lenovo L520 - psmouse.c: touchpad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync and stops working for seconds

2014-01-12 Thread Jon Vaughan
Christopher, I have raised
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1268365

However this bug (896922) was originally created by Matthias after he
was told do do so in similar circumstances on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/773433, a bug which
is now marked as Expired. I respect that you want to distinguish
specific individual circumstances but this is a severe problem (I have
had to restart psmouse twice while writing this) and creating separate
unlinked bugs dilutes the impact, and presumably reduces the chances of
it being looked at. From a quick google I found also these which look
like exactly the same issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1165089 (raised 5/4/2013,
also marked as Expired) and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1198274
(raised 5/7/2013, which you have put a similar comment on)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1261133
(raised 15/12/2013, which you have put a similar comment on)

Could we perhaps nominate one of these to be the the master issue and
mark it with an appropriate severity, and mark the others all as
duplicates?

That is an excellent spot, and I apologise - I had recently updated the
bios using the lenovo updater utility but it doesn't see this version.

So I am now:

[Bug 1164754] Re: No appearance settings available in System Settings

2013-05-17 Thread Tom Vaughan
This didn't work for me because I have `APT::Install-Recommends 0;`
set under `/etc/apt/apt.conf.d`. I had to explicitly install this
package by hand. A better solution IMHO would be to make this a required
dependency.

@Serge. Yes. It did. I put the kvm binaries back they way they were. I
removed emulator as described. And it worked.

The problem may be that I created the VM *before* I installed and
switched to SPICE. I just noticed that virt-manager has a setting for
which video mode to use for new VM's - VNC or SPICE. I never looked at
this prior to the SPICE install.

I don't know. The problem seems to be with virt-viewer. The workaround
is to edit the virtual machine's XML definition in /etc/libvrit/qemu.
According to `dpkg -S` that's owned by libvirt-bin.

Perhaps we could add a Common Problems and Workarounds section to this
wiki: http://virt-manager.org/page/Main_Page. A google search for qemu
kvm spice blank screen doesn't turn up anything we could edit,
including the virt-manager wiki. Which means anything we do may not be
seen by anyone.

The right long-term solution seems to make virt-viwer switch to kvm-
spice automatically when SPICE is chosen, and make the virt-viewer
package depend on qemu-kvm-spice as long as it offers SPICE as a valid
option.

[Bug 807153] Re: named does not shut down after service bind9 stop

2011-10-21 Thread Brian Vaughan
I disabled dnssec validation, and after a few days with a number of
reboots and restarts of bind9, I haven't had any further trouble with
stopping the bind9 service or with shutting down my system. So I'm
pretty sure at this point that there's some bug with dnssec validation
that intermittent prevents bind9 from shutting down properly.

[Bug 807153] Re: named does not shut down after service bind9 stop

2011-10-20 Thread Brian Vaughan
This looks like the bug I want to report. I find that shutting down bind9 is
erratic: sometimes it succeeds, sometimes not. This is a common result of
shutting it down at the command line:
codebrian@$ sudo service bind9 stop
 * Stopping domain name service... bind9
rndc: connect failed: 127.0.0.1#953: connection refused/code
I need to send a break (usually with CTRL-C) to get past this.

I often have difficulty shutting down or rebooting my system, as it
often hangs early in the process; bind9 seems to be among the first
services to be shut down, so I suspect it is the root of that problem as
well.

I notice that Matthias pointed out that he is using IPv6 and dnssec. I
am using an IPv6 tunnel and have configured bind9 for dnssec validation;
I had purged and reinstalled bind9 in trying to troubleshoot this
problem, and it didn't hang on restarts before I re-enabled dnssec
validation. That was only a few restarts; with an intermittent problem,
it's hard to be sure. I will try disabling dnssec validation for a few
days and see if that helps.

[Bug 872072] [NEW] basexgui is not added to GNOME menus

2011-10-10 Thread Brian Vaughan
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10
basex 6.7-1

When I installed the basex package, I expected basexgui to be added to
the GNOME menu system, and that in the Unity Dash, typing basexgui
would bring up the graphical user interface to basex, but this was not
the case; it had to be launched from the command line. Adding basexgui
to the GNOME menu system would, of course, make it easier to use.

I believe this is a wishlist item.

[Bug 730023] Re: Mountall doesn't swapon with 'ignore'-d swap in fstab

2011-10-10 Thread Brian Vaughan
@Steve, under bug #839118, you pointed out it was odd that I had a
system with a mountpoint of none. Perhaps another bug I filed recently
may be related to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks/+bug/865026

As best I can recall, when I started using Ubuntu, with version 8.04, it
was on a dual-boot system with Windows; the NTFS partitions were listed
in /etc/fstab with a mount point of none. My current computer is a
different computer, but the file systems have a generally similar
configuration: it's a dual boot system, with Windows partitions and
Linux partitions on separate drives. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a
second hard drive, and it listed the NTFS partitions with mount points
of none. I later created an NTFS partition with a specified mount
point, in order to share files between Linux and Windows. Two other
partitions I specified mount points recently, as a workaround for the
problem in Bug #865026.

I tried commenting out the lines for the partitions that had originally
been assigned mount points of none, including two which I had assigned
mount points, /mnt/SYSTEM_RESERVED and /mnt/Gateway, and found that the
latter two again appeared in the sidebar in Nautilus, allowing
unprivileged users to mount them.

I also found that moving the swap partition line higher in /etc/fstab
worked, unless it was listed before the partition with the mount point
of none, as in the attached fstab. In that case, the swap partition is
not mounted.

[Bug 870297] Re: Lightdm logins not being logged in wmtp

2011-10-08 Thread Brian Vaughan
Here's a copy and paste of what I posted on ubuntuforums.org:

Users logged in via GUI not listed by 'who', 'w', or 'last'.
It looks like some update on September 30 or October 1 inhibits correct
tracking of GUI logins. At a guess, I think lightDM is not updating
/var/log/wtmp. I'm not sure, though, and I'd appreciate suggestions on how to
narrow it down so I can make a proper bug report.

I often log in to my desktop via ssh, then execute 'w' or 'who' to see
if anyone is logged in, before I do any work on my system. I executed
'w', found that there was only one user logged in, which was me, then I
started x11vnc and connected to my desktop, only to see that my stepson
was logged in and playing Minecraft. I tried 'who', and it indicated
only my login; 'last' didn't show my son's login today.

'last' did show his login via GUI from yesterday, before I applied a batch of
updates, so that's why I think this was just broken:
Code:

kidongui tty7 :0 Thu Sep 1 16:50 - 21:37
(04:46)

I did see that his processes were correctly listed by 'ps' and 'top'.

[Bug 853580] Re: Unable to start second virtual machine

2011-09-19 Thread Brian Vaughan
I'm attaching the xml files for server1.example.com and
tester1.example.com, which I used when generating the error messages
above. I have some other VMs defined, and I find that while I can start
any one, any second one fails to start with the same error messages.

[Bug 853580] Re: Unable to start second virtual machine

2011-09-19 Thread Brian Vaughan
From a quick look at the logs, it looks like the domains I usually
started second kept trying to bind to vnc on port 5900, which presumably
was already claimed by the first domain. I only set the port during
initial installation, so I'm not sure why it doesn't just try port 5901.

[Bug 853580] Re: Unable to start second virtual machine

2011-09-19 Thread Brian Vaughan
That was it. Each domain xml file had this line:

 graphics type 'vnc' port='5900' autoport='no'/

using edit [domain name] in virsh, I changed the line in each to:

 graphics type='vnc' autoport='yes'/

With that, they both started without complaint.

The remaining question is why the domains were configured that way to
begin with. I'm not sure if it's a result of my having specified the
port for vnc to use during installation, which I assumed was for
installation only, or those are set as default in some other way.

[Bug 839118] [NEW] swap not mounted with mountall unless listed last in /etc/fstab

2011-09-01 Thread Brian Vaughan
Public bug reported:

A swap partition is not mounted on boot, and is not mounted with
mountall, despite being listed in /etc/fstab, unless the line describing
the swap partition is the last line in /etc/fstab. This can be seen by
executing 'mountall -v' with the line describing the swap partition at
any other point in /etc/fstab: the last line of output will appear
similar to 'local 4/4 remote 0/0 virtual 12/12 swap 0/0'.

There is a description of the bug, and the workaround:

[Bug 773389] Re: during update to 11.04 from 10.10 invalid package information

2011-06-09 Thread vaughan
no. the problem was solved a few days later. i did submit a response
saying it was fixed after you responded asking me to try again as 1 of
the mirrors may have been at fault. though i don't see your response or
my further response on this bug anymore. you can close the report.
