I just got everything working using the Realtek drivers as Jose

I followed the steps just as they are in the Readme.txt bundled with the

 1) sudo apt-get install build-essential ncurses-dev gettext
 linux-headers-`uname -r`
 2) Download the drivers and extract them
 3) cd into the extracted directory
 4) tar xjf alsa-driver-rt20070820.tar.bz2
 5) cd alsa-driver-rt20070820
 6) ./configure
 7) make
 8) sudo make install
 9) sudo ./snddevices
 10) sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base (pasted a few lines into the bottom
of this file see *'s below)
 11) reboot your machine
 12) You should hear the ubuntu drums when it starts back up.
 13) Open the gnome mixer ()volume control icon in the panel).
 14) Tick PCM, Front, Headphone, capture and input source (no I don't know
if it has to be this ... I do know this worked though)
 15) Under the recording tab make sure it is not muted and under options
tab make sure input source is mic.
 DONE.
I was able to play mp3s, and with headset plugged into the front I had
muted speakers and headset worked on skype test call. That's enough
 functionality for me.

 *
Put the below into the bottom of your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file as
 described in step 10 above(from the Readme.txt). I used snd-hda-intel in
place of snd-. The readme lists a few options you may have to try
 instead.

 Unknown symbol snd_hwdep_new
Some googling learned this missing symbol could be solved by also
 compiling emu10k1 from alsa.
Compiling alsa 1.0.14 with the files from realtek12.tar with ./hgcompile

[Bug 116326] Re: No audio INTEL HD audio - Realtek ALC268 codec - Toshiba A205-S4577

2007-07-23 Thread venky80
Hi Brian, Chris and rest of the crowd
I successfully got the sound working in my Gutsy machine thanks to incredible
amount of support from Brian and Chris ,
who patiently responded to all of the questions posted by this noob.
Now I will try to put together a how to.
I tried installing in my feisty machine but I was unsucessful.

Laptop Toshiba A205-S4577
Distribution: Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
Kernel: 2.6.22-8-generic
Date of last updates: 18th July 2007
Packages needed before installing new ALSA Drivers : build-essential
libncurses4 libncurses5 libncurses5-dev ( I am not very sure which one worked)
1)Download alsa-drivers, alsa-firware, alsa-lib, alsa-util version 1.0.14 from
ALSA.org and extract it into a directory named ALSA in desktop or your home
2) Replace patch_realtek.c and hda_proc.c in the
~ALSA/alsa-driver-1.0.14/alsa-kernel/pci/hda with the new files (I am attaching
both)
3) Then do sudo ./configure sudo make and sudo make install in the following
folders according to the order specified (order is important) ALSA lib , ALSA
utils ALSA firmware and lastly ALSA drivers.
hopefully you will see no errors.
4) restart

Unmute the mixers see the following link for how the mixer will look like
http://bayimg.com/caEJMAaBB
the headphones channel would control the external speakers and line in channel
will (unfortunately/fortunately) control the inbuilt speakers.

I am extremely happy thanks to Chris Cheney and Brian Mount once again.
I think I am going to freeze all updates till this gets patched in repository.

Good night and enjoy.
Cheers!
Venky

Hi Chris,
Do you have sound working in some fashion in your a205 laptop running gutsy?
If yes would you be able to give me your patch_realtek.c and hda_proc.c
files?
Also do you have is running in 2.6.22-8 kernel?
I would be glad if I can get some sound from my laptop, don't care if it
doesn't have all features.
I am sure you are motivated lol wouldn't be bad if you can listen to some
songs while working on open office development.
Thank you,

 Hey Venky,

I am not sure if APT will override changes, in general
it will not, so if for example you change your x.org
conf file it will not be changed by any updates, even
if that would be for the best. I would expect this
patch to make it into the next version of ALSA so I
personally would be inclined to take my chances (and
see if the headphone issue is resolved) and let it
update, recompiling if necessary. As far as APT is
concerned, I think you would only get an update if a
specific driver was changed. If you are annoyed at
the prospect of having to do this over again you can
 only automatically do security updates.

The patch I used, current as of 7-02, is attached.
 All the best,

 Brian Mount

Also, I looked at the Realtek 4.06a driver and it no longer has ALC268

ALSA version whenever it happens to actually work. Although the Realtek
4.05f driver does have support for ALC268 in the code, it isn't listed
as supported in the readme.txt. Also, I haven't tested to see if 4.05f
actually works for my Toshiba laptop.
