I unpinned these, and installed the upgrades which broke them.
I was able to get past the problem by this post:

I have libperl5.22 and libperl5.22:I368 pinned at 5.22.1-9ubuntu0.3
because updates broke them.

[Bug 978678]

2012-07-25 Thread Webservant
I'm having similar issues but not with this windows program nor with
this version of wine. The fix seems to be the same. Is there a wine1.5
version of this (same OS)?

Re: [Bug 418399] Re: X out of window doesn't close Firefox.

2009-08-25 Thread webservant
Sorry, I haven't been able to reproduce it. I was hoping that there was
useful information in the bug report that would help you see what went
wrong. Given that it was the window control, I'm not sure if this is
firefox directly or something to do with the gnu under it.

Does it give you any clues if you run firefox-3.0 from a command line?

Thanks for working through this with me!

Adding that to the boot gives me a functioning Live CD system!

This old PC has some slight memory issues which may be triggering this
problem. If I run memtest86, I get about 400 errors. However, if I try
to replace any of the SDRAM, I get upwards of 48,000 errors. I believe
the memory controller on the motherboard is starting to go. The fix is
a replacement of the motherboard (around $50-75), but why would I do
that for an AMD 850 with 384Mb of memory? I'm just trying to buy a
little more time. The 8.10 systems never complain of and it all seems
to work. So, I guess that I'll re-upgrade this partitions, and add this
 to the boot of menu.lst

Is there anything else that would help you understand / resolve the
issue, or is this the resolution?

Essentially here we have a new check for the BIOS corrupting low memory.
Intrepid did not have this check so would never have failed in this way.
This failure most likely indicates that you BIOS has a flaw, but it is
unlikely to be worth trying to figure out the flaw and you are even less
likely to get support for the BIOS.

As the option is working for you I would call this one fixed as much as
it can be. I will close this one off 'Fixed'.

Nor any file with map in it:

And there is only one file ending in generic...

This has been reported a number of times against the -server kernel but
not against the -generic kernel before. It would be good to get the eip
there translated as it may help us identify what is going wrong. This
kind of error only occurs very early in boot before a proper handler has
been registered. What we need is the System.map-*-generic file off of
the CD on which you reproduced this issue. If you don't have the CD any
more perhaps you could reproduce with a current CD and if still there
include that System.map. Thanks in advance!

Re: [Bug 384044] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 live CD crashes on boot

2009-06-09 Thread webservant

It seems that this can be turned off using a kernel parameter. It would
be worth booting with the option below and seeing if that makes a
difference. Add this to the kernel command line in syslinux:

2009-06-07 Thread webservant
Fair enough, but realize that the the hardware currently triple-boots
(Windows XP, Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop, and Ubuntu 8.10 Server). So, whatever
is different in 9.04 isn't a problem in 8.10.

If you need anymore information/testing, let me know. Thanks for the
guidance, and happy hunting.

[Bug 384044] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.04 live CD crashes on boot

2009-06-05 Thread webservant
Public bug reported:

I'm working on an HP Pavillion 8770C with an AMD Athlon 850 MHz
processor and the Irongate chipset.

Previously, I attempted an upgrade of Ubuntu 8.10 Server to 9.04 Server,
and got this same error which caused me to restore the partitions and
back out.

This time, I just booted from the Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop i386 Live CD. The
system starts to boot, and then displays the following:

Re: [Bug 384044] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 live CD crashes on boot

2009-06-05 Thread webservant
On the computer documented in the bug, I get the exact same error as
when I attempt to boot the live cd.
This is the same error that I receive when I upgraded my server patition
on this hardware via a network upgrade.

However, on a different system Dell Dimension 2350 with a P4 2.60 GHz
cpu, I have successfully booted this exact Live CD and upgraded
subsequently upgraded (with an alternative CD).

OK. I followed the instructions, removing quiet and splash and
adding debug= to the boot line. I received the same dump message
almost immediately (nothing else).

Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

The system is up to date with patches.

I continue to get three sets of error messages (probably because 3 mail
accounts come to the inbox):
1) Detected a corrupt mbox file or an invalid 'From' header
2) Error while fetching Mail.

I tried deleting:
$HOME/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox.ev-summary
$HOME/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox.ev-summary-meta

But this doesn't clear the problem. I've also done this, rebooted, then
restarted evolutiona, and the problem persists. Everything in Inbox is
duplicated in the UI. Othere folders and accounts seem fine.

I'm having a similar problem. I can reproduce the problem at will with
