[Bug 677709] Re: [Realtek ALC269] Playback problem on Asus ul30a

2010-12-29 Thread zombiepig
I've spent a while over the last couple of weeks searching around for
information on any latency issues with the notebook, but unfortunately
had no luck. It's running the latest firmware available.

That said, the audio works perfectly under 10.04, which would tend to
rule out firmware issues. Anything else I can try?

[Bug 677709] Re: [Realtek ALC269] Playback problem on Asus ul30a

2010-11-29 Thread zombiepig
Ok - for a bit of clarification, I see these problems mostly when I'm
just using pulseaudio as a normal user, playing back sound on my laptop
through the laptop's inbuilt speakers (or headphones). So the source
the sink are the same machine.

However - I also see them pop up when I use my laptop as a source, and
the desktop pc as a sink. The desktop pc has no problems whatsoever
playing back audio locally. This leads me to believe the problem is
caused somewhere in the 'source' side on my laptop.

Pulseaudio's daemon.conf is back to it's default settings now, but the
values I've tried modifying are:

 default-fragments = 8
 default-fragment-size-msec = 10

I changed these two settings in a whole range of combinations with
values ranging from 2 up to 30. I tried pretty much every combination
possible, with equal values, one high and the other low, and the
opposite. Some settings made the problem worse, but no combinations made
the glitches less frequent than the default 8/10 values.

resample-method = speex-float-1

I tried changing this one to src-sinc-fastest to see if it was a
processing power problem (i gather src-sinc-fastest is the least
demanding method), but there was no noticeable change.

There's no change in behaviour after installing linux-alsa-driver-
modules-2.6.35-23-generic from the ubuntu audio dev ppa.

Next step? :)

I've now tried a whole stack of combinations of values for those
settings, and while some values made the problem noticeably worse, none
of them fixed the playback issues.

Any advice on the next debugging step I should take?

[Bug 677709] Re: [Realtek ALC269] Playback problem on Asus ul30a

2010-11-20 Thread zombiepig
It's currently set to:

 resample-method = speex-float-1
 default-fragments = 8
 default-fragment-size-msec = 10

I believe they're the default settings. Is it worth experimenting with
these values to see if they have any effect?

[Bug 677709] [NEW] [Realtek ALC269] Playback problem on Asus ul30a

2010-11-19 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Maverick on a new Asus UL30A I've had problems with
sound crackling and glitching roughly every 2 minutes or so. Running the
system on battery increases the frequency of the problem, so that it
happens maybe once every 30 seconds or so. I see the same behaviour
regardless of the app playing back audio - it happens with local music,
streamed music (via flash websites), videos, etc. I've tried a number of
things to track this down, including running the 2.6.37rc2 kernel from
the mainline ppa and installing packages from the ubuntu-audio-devs ppa,
but nothing seems to help.

One thing that I have noticed which might help track this down is that I
regularly use the padevchooser app to stream music from the UL30A laptop
across to a desktop system, and even when doing this I get the same
glitchy audio playback. This would seem to suggest to me that the
problem doesn't lie in the alsa driver, but rather in pulseaudio or
somewhere else in the maverick software stack.

Is this bug incorrectly marked as 'fix released'? While a fix is
available (and included in gimp 2.6.11), it hasn't been included in the
ubuntu package yet and isn't available through the repositories.

[Bug 643115] [NEW] Allow disabling the application indicator extension without disabling notifyosd displays

2010-09-19 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

Currently, the banshee extension for using Ubuntu's notifyosd displays is tied
into the extension for the Application Indicator. It's not possible to disable
the application indicator without losing notifyosd notifications at the same
time.

This is a limitation now that banshee supports Ubuntu's sound menu integration.
I'd like to remove the banshee icon from the application indicator tray, since
I can access all it's functionality through the sound menu now, but i'd also
like to keep the notifyosd notifications.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 638540] [NEW] Incorrect use of quotes in OpenOffice dialogs

2010-09-14 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Something which has been annoying me about OpenOffice recently is it's
incorrect use of quotation marks in dialog strings. An example of this
is the replace existing file dialog. Openoffice displays the string in
quotation marks, so the dialog says:

Save

The file already exists. Overwrite?

No / Yes
---

Why is this string quoted? I can't see any logical (grammatical) reason
for it, and it looks out of place since no other programs do this.

I see this same behaviour - if i drag and drop a video file to move it

[Bug 284596] Re: nm-applet fail when another user is logged in (intrepid)

2009-01-15 Thread zombiepig
This bug is serious under the following circumstances:
- First user logs into PC, network manager starts up and connects to network
- Second user uses fast-user-switcher to logon, has no icon for network manager
- Some time later the first user switches back on, and logs out of their account
- Now, the second user has no network manager, and the network connection is
lost. They've got no way of re-connecting to the network, save manually
starting nm or logging out and logging back on.

I'm hitting this situation a lot with two users using the same netbook
and wireless network connection.

[Bug 260765] Re: DVD playback does not work anymore

2008-10-15 Thread zombiepig
Onkar, I installed *only* the gstreamer-plugins-bad from your ppa
(wasn't sure if i was supposed to do base or sdl, so I only installed
the plugins-bad deb).

Using stock intrepid totem, dvd playback works ok for me, on a few
titles I've tested it on.

What works:
- Seeking forward, sometimes. Seems to work better on short chapters ( 1 min).
Doesn't always seek to the position I set it to, it will often jump back the a
point between the current time and the desired time. It also confuses totem a
little, if I seek I see the time in the status bar reporting the wrong position
(ie, 1:20 / 1:00)
- Menu selection using mouse
- Menu highlighting works correctly most of the time

What doesn't:
- Seeking backwards (seems to skip forward)
- Menu selection using keyboard (tries to seek instead)
- Skip forward/backwards button
- The options in the go menu (dvd menu, title menu, etc)

Generally, it's a big improvement -- it feels SO close to proper dvd
playback! :D

I can confirm that - all that's required is installing the schema file
from libcanberra-0.10

From my tests, the following effects work:
- button clicked (mostly, doesn't activate on close buttons)
- toggle button clicked
- window maximized
- window unmaximized
- window minimized
- login
- logout

The following don't work
- empty trash (probably because it's not implemented yet, see
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=546989 for patch)
- information or question alert (at least, not for any of the question alerts I
could find)

I haven't tested the following
- Long action completed
- New e-mail
- Warning alert
- Error alert
- Battery Warning

problem. In 0.10 there's the option to use a gconf schema file to load
the gtk module, rather than the GTK_MODULES variable. This may fix this
bug. The full release notes for libcanberra 0.10 state:

This release includes a GConf schema file which can be used to
activate the libcanberra Gtk+ module more elegantly than via setting
$GTK_MODULES. Please note however that that will work only with very
new version of gnome-settings-daemon. In fact, with a version that is
so new it isn't even released yet! ;-)

This release also includes quite a few important fixes, so please make
sure to update. If you aren't shipping the new g-s-d version you can
safely drop the schema file from your distro package. It should be
safe to set GTK_MODULES and use the schema file in parallel. It might
even be wise for enabling input feedback sounds even in non-GNOME
sessions.

[Bug 276134] [NEW] [intrepid] no prompt to save open work on shutdown/restart

2008-09-29 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

For a while intrepid switched to the new gnome shutdown warning prompt,
where you are alerted to unsaved work before the logoff procedure
starts.

However, this dialog is no longer shown (alpha 6+all updates to 30/9),
and shutting down the workstation with open, unsaved work doesn't lead
to any prompts-- the system just happily shuts down and loses the work.

This is potentially a huge regression, and could result in hours of lost
work!

[Bug 258703] Re: gnome-sound-properties cannot set sound preferences

2008-09-23 Thread zombiepig
The latest updates to libcanberra (0.6-0ubuntu1) and ubuntu-sounds (0.8)
fix this issue, in that the controls are no longer disabled and the
ubuntu sound theme now appears correctly as a choice of sound theme.

I'm going to file a seperate bug about the window button sound effects
not working.

[Bug 273507] [NEW] No sound effects play when play sound effects when buttons are clicked is enabled

2008-09-23 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libcanberra-gtk-module

As initially detailed in some of the comments in #258703, selecting the
Play sound effects when buttons are clicked has no effect.

The instructions in this mailing list post
(https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/libcanberra-
discuss/2008-July/21.html) need to be followed to enable libcanberra
gtk integration, which will properly enable gtk-sound effects. Quoted
here:

...Packagers!

If you package libcanberra, make sure to include a script like this
one in your package:

snip
#!/bin/sh

if [ -z $GTK_MODULES ] ; then
GTK_MODULES=libcanberra-gtk-module
else
GTK_MODULES=$GTK_MODULES:libcanberra-gtk-module
fi

export GTK_MODULES
/snip

This script should be sourced in each Gnome session and will enable
the libcanberra gtk module for all gtk programs.

In fedora we install it as libcanberra-gtk-module.sh in
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/. I assume other distributions have similar
directories.
...

I think this is missing from the ubuntu libcanberra packages, which is
preventing the gtk sound effects from working properly.

[Bug 152282] Re: clock applet is one pixel too low

2008-09-21 Thread zombiepig
This bug is still present in intrepid, and much more noticeable in the
default install since the fast-user-switcher applet is now placed next
to the clock.

Here's a zoomed screenshot showing the problem in detail.

Reading from the upstream bug report, it seems like this is caused
because the clock applet text is inside a button. This in itself leads
to inconsistency across the top panel - since the fusa does not appear
in a button, yet both applets are clickable and show drop-down menus.

[Bug 271965] [NEW] add gconf options for hiding suspend hibernate

2008-09-18 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

Since a lot of machines have problems resuming from suspend and
hibernate, I'd like to see some additional gconf keys to hide the

[Bug 270374] [NEW] [intrepid] enter a computer name then hit enter, list stays on screen and steals input

2008-09-14 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tsclient

With the version of tsclient in intrepid, there's a strange bug. To
reproduce:

- Launch tsclient and type in a computer name to connect to
- Immediately press 'enter' to connect, don't tab out of the field or use the
mouse to select 'connect'
- The list box stays on screen while the connection proceeds, and refuses to
disappear. It also steals all input, so mouse clicks and typing has no effect.
Only way to clear it is to hit escape a few times to disconnect from the
session, then close the drop down.

It works fine if you select another field before connecting, or if you
use the mouse to press the connect button.

[Bug 258703] Re: gnome-sound-properties cannot set sound preferences

2008-09-11 Thread zombiepig
Looks like there's a few parts to this one:

1. To enable all the controls on the gnome-sound-properties page, the
freedesktop sound theme (from comment 7) needs to be installed to
/usr/share/sounds
2. The instructions in this mailing list post
(https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/libcanberra-discuss/2008-July/21.html)
need to be followed to enable libcanberra gtk integration. Quoted here:

...Packagers!

If you package libcanberra, make sure to include a script like this
one in your package:

snip
#!/bin/sh

if [ -z $GTK_MODULES ] ; then
GTK_MODULES=libcanberra-gtk-module
else
GTK_MODULES=$GTK_MODULES:libcanberra-gtk-module
fi

export GTK_MODULES
/snip

This script should be sourced in each Gnome session and will enable
the libcanberra gtk module for all gtk programs.

In fedora we install it as libcanberra-gtk-module.sh in
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/. I assume other distributions have similar
directories.
...

I think this second part is missing from the ubuntu libcanberra
packages, which is preventing the system sounds from working properly
even when the freedesktop theme is installed.

[Bug 262083] [NEW] [intrepid] fast-user-switch-applet should use same icons for online status as empathy

2008-08-27 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

The fast-user-switch-applet currently has its own set of icons it uses for the
online status (online, busy, away, offline). These icons aren't user-friendly
(a trashcan for away?). For consistency, the icons should be the same used in
the status drop down box in empathy.
I've attached two screenshots showing the difference in icons between empathy

2008-08-17 Thread zombiepig
I can also confirm this regression - I believe it may be caused by the
missing touchpad section in xorg.conf (which in intrepid is no longer
required), since hardy also missed this tab if the xorg.conf didn't
contain the correct settings.

[Bug 181057] Re: [hardy] Del-key doesn't work on Acer Extensa laptops

2008-04-17 Thread zombiepig
Ok, i've tracked down the line which causes the problem, by manually applying
each change from the working hal keymap file.
The problem is the line

append key=input.keymap.data type=strliste053:bluetooth/append !--
Bluetooth (toggle) on-to-off --
on line 141 of /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30-keymap-acer.fdi

Removing this line (and restarting) fixes the problem properly. Removing it
doesn't affect the bluetooth functionality either, since it's the next line
append key=input.keymap.data type=strliste054:bluetooth/append !--
Bluetooth (toggle) off-to-on --
which allows the bluetooth module to be switched toggled.

So it's perfectly safe to remove line 141, retain full functionality,
and fix the delete key issue permanently! I'm going to try and find a
way of getting this fix upstream, and hopefully a ubuntu dev can make
the required change before hardy release

(and thanks go to daniel eckl for finding the fix for this one!)

[Bug 152206] Re: Intel 965G (GMA X3000) - Video Tearing Effect Poor Performance

2008-03-11 Thread zombiepig
The problem is that the move to textured video exa is still missing
some pieces, like ttm, dri2 and batch buffer. So, using textured video
at the moment results in poor performance and video tearing. Switching
to overlay video and back to xaa could possibly fix the performance
problems temporarily, until things are more ready for textured video

[Bug 152206] Re: Intel 965G (GMA X3000) - Video Tearing Effect Poor Performance

2008-02-29 Thread zombiepig
A possible fix to the tearing video problem is to switch from textured
video to overlay video. It was previously believed that the x3100
chipsets didn't have hardware support for overlay video, but it's now
discovered that they do have overlay adapters. Apparently, the video
tearing only occurs with textured video, not overlay.

A recent post on the xorg mailing list includes patches to allow overlay video
with intel chipsets, and also adds the xorg.conf option for
Option TexturedVideo false
that will disable the textured video adapter, so that the overlay adapter
becomes default for video playback.

The patches are available here:

[Bug 196366] [NEW] [hardy] 2 icons missing in tangerine theme

2008-02-27 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

[Bug 195997] Re: [hardy] wrong icon for high priority mail in evolution with non-human themes

2008-02-27 Thread zombiepig
I tracked down an alpha 2 cd, and took a screenshot with the better

I also checked in the usr/share/icons, and it looks like nothing has

symlinking to emblem-important.png), so it looks like the problem is in
evolution itself.

[Bug 195997] [NEW] [hardy] wrong icon for stock_mail-priority-high.png in non-Human icon themes

2008-02-26 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-icon-theme

In the early Hardy alpha versions, the icon for marking mail as high
priority was a very nice red exclamation mark in the tango style.
Somewhere along the way, this icon has changed to the emblem-
important.png file, in fact, stock_mail-priority-high.png now symlinks
to emblem-important.png

This only applies to themes based of the gnome icon theme, eg tangerine,
mist, etc. Not the human icon theme, which uses it's own orange circle
exclamation for stock_mail-priority-high.

The tango style red exclamation looked fantastic with the rest of the
tango-ised icons in evolution, the current exclamation-in-a-circle icon
doesn't look so hot. Unfortunately, I can't find any screenshots of the
better icon, but if it helps, I could redownload an early hardy alpha
and find the correct image.

I've attached a screenshot of how evolution currently looks with the
wrong icon.

[Bug 191475] [NEW] [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications

2008-02-12 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Under system-preferences-file management, the media tab does not
detect a lot of the installed applications.

For instance, on a standard hardy alpha 4 install, both Music Player and Photos
are disabled, with the text No applications installed, despite Rhythmbox and
F-spot being installed on the system.
Additionally, under the other media section, it's not possible to select
brasero to be the default for blank cd disc.

This tab seems to duplicate most of the functionality from Removable
Drives and Media, and the settings in it don't match up with what's set
in the removable drives and media app. I think it should probably be
hidden in the standard hardy install to prevent confusion.

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2008-02-11 Thread zombiepig
Looks like there may be a solution to part of the problem, with the
latest totem svn supporting playback via gstreamer.

As per http://www.hadess.net/2008/02/new-tla-features.html
Totem GStreamer in SVN got 2 new acronym-laden features. First is DVD
playback. Unfortunately, we still don't do menus, but now you'll be able to
play the films on your DVD. The support is on-par with the old GStreamer 0.8
code. Thanks to Tim for the guidance in writing this code.

Hopefully these changes get included in totem in hardy, then all we'll
need is gstreamer support for dvd menus for playback to work correctly!

[Bug 189758] [NEW] [hardy] Menu entry should be named GIMP Image Editor Instead of only the GNU Image Manipulation Program

2008-02-06 Thread zombiepig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

Looks like the default menu name for GIMP has changed from GIMP Image
Editor (in gutsy) to GNU Image Manipulation Program (in hardy alpha
4). Given that all the other default programs installed in the ubuntu
menu follow a format like F-Spot Photo Manager, Brasero Disc
Burning, etc, renaming the menu item back to GIMP Image Editor would
make everything look more consistent and friendlier for new users!

** Affects: gimp (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
