[Bug 1742603] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash
I'd like to perform a bisect to figure out what commit caused this regression. We need to identify the earliest kernel where the issue started happening as well as the latest kernel that did not have this issue. Can you test the following kernels and report back? We are looking for the first kernel version that exhibits this bug: v4.11 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.11 v4.12 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.12 v4.13 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.13 You don't have to test every kernel, just up until the kernel that first has this bug. Thanks in advance! ** Tags removed: pti ** Tags added: performing-bisect ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1742603 Title: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1742603/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1742603] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash
My colleague who handles IT for the department and has been seeing this on multiple computers reports the following: I tried the mainline kernel 4.15-rc8 , no joy. [Bug 1742603] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash
I am seeing the same problem I think. The system crashes on boot in kernel 4.13.0-26-generic in Ubuntu , but boots fine on 4.10.0=42-generic. I have a Dell Precision T3600 with a Xeon E5-1620 CPU. ecause the system doesn't boot (even in recovery mode), I cannot run apport-bug to file detailed logs. I can upload a screenshot of the crash if necessary. What I can report from memory is that the crash comes from dereferencing a NULL. On my most recent attempt, the last [Ok] message before the crash related to the sound card, and another one comes up after the error message related to the keyboard. Then everything freezes. I have no reason to believe that either of these modules is actually the culprit. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1742603 Title: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1742603/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1742603] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash
Before testing mainline, can you see if this bug exists in 4.13.0-21, which does not have the PTI patches? It can be downloaded from: https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel- team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/13870500 Notes, you need to install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages to test the kernel. ** Tags added: pti -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1742603 Title: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1742603/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1742603] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.15 kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance.
