Uninstalled Xgl, reinstalled compiz. Now nvidia-setting opens properly and will save configuration if run as root. Xgl is not and was not installed on my 32bit nvidia/Hardy system, wonder why and how it was installed on the 64bit? -- nvidia-setting cannot identify driver
