Hi Christian and all,
I don't agree with you 100% but only 50%...
I like to have the home encrypted, and I would like also to have also the
autologin in my unique account I have on my pc.
This is because I like that when I start it, all the programs can be loaded at
the beginning.

Autologin CAN not be possible when the $HOME is encrypted, as this would be
nonsense in a security's POV.

1. When setting up autologin (in systemsettings), KDE should check if that user

That's right, there should definitely be something to prevent you from
enabling auto-login if home is encrypted. The way things are now, it's
outright dangerous, for noobs especially. If you check the field, you
end up with an unusable setup, unless you find out somehow
As to whether or not this
whoops, cut short the first paragraph there - it should say, unless you
find out where the config file is, what setting you have to edit, and
how you even do that on a shell.

Encypted homedir. Then auto-login -- same error.
Just how to get rid of the auto-login without a new installation:
In: /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc you have to set
AutoLoginEnable=false
Then everything is working again.

Yup. I'm here for the same reason. Encrypted homedir. Chose auto-login.
Now I get the same error message above.
I understand the (valid) reasons) for this not working, but concur with
the commenter above that the auto login feature should be greyed out
with a note / tooltip explaining why.

sorry for the delay: thanks for pointing that out! my home dir really
seems to be encrypted in addition to the LVM thing. No idea how I ended
up with this.
This whole thing got a new quality after upgrading to Karmic. I went to
check whether auto-login worked after the update, only to

my whole system was encrypted, but the home directiory was encrypted
twice. I think I pressed once the wrong button during Installation.
However, I had to backup the home folder, deactivate encryption for home

Customized and up-to-date Ubuntu 9.04.
After I turned on auto-login in system-settingslogin-
managerconvenience, I got this exact same message when kdm (I guess)
starts: kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 3.
