I see a similar problem playing H.264 videos (1936x800, 24 fps) with MPEG-4 AAC (48khz, 159kbps) audio. Things seem OK, but by after playing the movie for tens of minutes, the sound gets out of sync by a second or more. FWIW, there are similar issues with mplayer. Firstly there is the web-based scenario where I just click on the links in comment #24. Geek Brief HD (GeekBeat.TV (HD)?) is an embedded Flash video. So GStreamer is not involved, unless you use one of the available Firefox addons to download the file and then play it back in Totem. I'm also seeing the issue there, which means there is a problem with the Linux version of Adobe's proprietary Flash player. Of course Canonical and Ubuntu don't provide support for proprietary software. Buzz report plays fine because it is a pure video stream and is opened by the Totem plugin for Firefox. However One can launch Totem and then choose Open Location... from the Movie menu. In this case Buzz report plays fine but Geek Brief HD still has the issue. Clicking the links under the Geek Brief HD video play the video in the Totem plugin for Firefox just like the Buzz Report. The Large one plays fine but the two HD ones have serious issues. I downloaded one of the Geek Brief HD videos. I got one of the HD ones, not the HD (30fps) but the other one just labelled HD. I've found a workaround, at least in the downloaded situation. Hopefully it will work while streaming too. If I begin playback of the file mentioned in comment #29 I get the issue. If I then seek forward or back using Totem's slider playback becomes normal and good. Further seeking back to the beginning or anywhere else is also followed by normal and good playback. Does the attached video file play OK on your system? It has the same dimensions and the same 48 KHz sample rate as your original description, and is similar in many other ways, except for the frame rate being 25 fps instead of 30 fps. Okey, ran back-to-yesteryears commands in fully installed Maverick Meerkat 2010-08-31 daily alpha-release -- the above... sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg sudo ldconfig It seems that the required codecs of gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad; gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly and gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg are successfully installed -- reported by apt-get (translated into En.) as '[codec] is already the latest version'. and '[codec] is set to manual install.' (manual... huh!?) Totem finally ran the above video examples, Totem being as cranky at starting as my old banger of a car: Still HD-stuttering in 48000 Hz audio and as before, not at 44000 Hz audio. I haven't figured out how to direct Apport to a specific bug as this bugID #575389. I apply the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10 -plugins-ugly in Synaptics; making sure Totem and gstreamer is up-to- date; refresh Synaptics; check that components of interest are enabled in Synaptics and then start a trial run, where the result is a 'cascading dialog'-situation with main dialog titled 'Installing Multimedia Package - gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg' and a smaller dialog displaying 'No packages installed' with an 'main dialog'-freeze requiring Kill processes. All this, under the notion that I don't have to install the daily alpha Live CD, 2010-08-31. Now, I'm making room for this alpha on a unit and I'm going to prep.-it best I can and then start a trial run. All in all this weekend. The Components: main restricted; part tells me that you do not have the universe and multiverse repositories enabled. This is where gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly live. (I would have thought that they were also in restricted, but apparently not). To enable universe and multiverse simply open Software Sources and check the boxes next to those 2 items. The location of Software Sources has recently, or is about to, move. You'll either find it in the old location on the System Administration menu, or in it's new location in Synaptic Package Manager's Settings Repositories menu. Synaptic Package Manager can be found on the System Administration menu. After adding these repositories you should be prompted to reload the package information, if not click the reload button in Synaptic. OK, thanks. The output of glxinfo | grep render is as it should be. We can rule out this bug being caused by your system falling back to software rendering. The comparison between the CNET Buzz Report HD and the Geek Brief HD is interesting. If I recall correctly, 44100 Hz is the sample rate used on audio CD's and thus became the de-facto standard for a lot of other uses as well, whereas 48000 Hz is the sample rate used for audio on DVD movies. Issue: Clearly identified Full HD videos in Ubuntu 8.04, not a problem; 9.04 not a problem; 9.10 not a problem but some oddities - as small image disturbances, at times. Same videos in Ubuntu 10.04: Not working properly, with serious lag and sound and video out of sync. Same CPU, same memory, later OS -- and yes, I reinstalled the sequence of Ubuntu OS above, testing the specific videos. Different tests also run on system components, not a problem, not a warning. Note: I'll try the 'glxinfo | grep render' in a couple of days -- the OS-upgrade path above took the better part of a week-end. According to the Apple trailers site this means that your CPU is not powerful enough to play back HD video. What CPU do you have?
