What I read from the title of this bug, isn't it now obselete with the
new Unity behavior i.e. to have launcher on each display?

2012-01-18 Thread Joost Van Durme
Daniel, it doesn't seem to work for 12.04 right now. Are you aware of that?
I mean, dragging the black bar to the right most external monitor has no
effect. Launcher stays on the left laptop screen.
Sorry for hopping to another version of Ubuntu, but I'm testing Precise Alpha
now. ;)

Hi,

I installed the patch yesterday. Only to report - it works with Unity 3D,
ATI Radeon card and catalyst drivers.
Thank, you!

PS. I keep my finger crossed this fix will go into main repositories - it's
really useful.

2012-01-13 Thread Joost Van Durme
HI Daniel,

the grep command does not give me any output. I did however install all the
upgraded files from the ppa with synaptic.
I dragged the black bar in Display settings to the right external monitor but
without effect. Even after restart.
Did I miss something perhaps?

Thanks a lot for the help.

Joost, if that grep command returned nothing then you don't have the fix
installed. Because the fixed version in my PPA will always write
messages containing UScreen.

Please check your package versions with:
dpkg -l unity\* | less

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2012-01-13 Thread Joost Van Durme
Ok I see what's happening now. The dpkg command tells me the fix is installed,
but it seems to be only for Unity3D, not for Unity2D.
And I'm using Unity2D since Unity3D is heavily slowed down with ATI cards using
the fglrx driver. Moving windows is chunky.
I logged back in with Unity3D and the launcher is now on the correct screen.
Unfortunately I have to use 2D because the graphics are too slow in Unity3D
with my card.
Any chance on a fix for 2D, Daniel? :-)

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2012-01-12 Thread Joost Van Durme
Hi Daniel,

I'm using 11.10 with an ATI card (Radeon HD 3650) and I'm having this issue.
I installed the fix from your ppa, but no luck.

Basically, the launcher is always on the left screen (as specified by xrandr)
and the --primary flag (this is my way of defining the primary monitor) of
xrandr is ignored by unity.
And I would like my rightmost external monitor to be the primary screen.

Any ideas on this matter? Would benefit really a lot from it.

Thanks!

2012-01-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Joost, please run this command to confirm you are running the PPA version and
to gather useful info:
grep UScreen ~/.xsession-errors
And attach the output of the command here.

With drivers that have proper xrandr (all except NVIDIA), the preferred
way of changing the primary screen is in the Gnome Displays control
panel. Drag the little black bar (at the top of one of the screens) to
the screen you want to be primary.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-12-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
A fix is available in ppa:vanvugt/unity,
https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/unity

** Description changed:

  WORKAROUND FOR 11.10:

- None available right now.
+ None available. But an early fix is available for 11.10 in
+ ppa:vanvugt/unity, https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/unity

  WORKAROUND FOR 11.04:

There are two ways to configure the primary monitor in Ubuntu 11.04...

Permanent workaround (requires logging back in again):
Edit ~/.config/monitors.xml, find the monitor you want the launcher to
display on and change:
  primaryno/primary
  to:
  primaryyes/primary
Now log out and log in again.

  Temporary workaround (no logout required):
  Open a Terminal window and...
  1. Run xrandr to find the NAME of the output you would like to make primary.
  2. Run: xrandr --output NAME --primary nohup unity --replace

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:

  Binary package hint: unity

In my particular configuration I have an external monitor hooked up to
my laptop on the left of the laptop display. The unity bar is ending up
on the laptop display though making it in the middle of the two
  monitors.

This makes it quite difficult to activate the bar with a full screen
application open on the laptop (hitting the upper left pixel of that
  monitor without going over).

I think it would make more sense to make it configurable which monitor
the bar ends up on, or at least look at the orientation of the monitors
when determining where to put the bar.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-11-24 Thread W.John Guineau
N!

This was working great since my post #73 above until I rebooted this
morning. Now the launcher is back to being stuck all the way on the left
monitor and the settings-Displays does not have the black bar for me to
drag the launcher back to the middle of my desktop (left side of my
primary monitor).

I am still on Daniels PPA as far as I can tell:

Looks like these got updated in the past day:

gnome-control-center 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu1 = 1:3.2.2-0ubuntu1
gnome-control-center-data 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu1 = 1:3.2.2-0ubuntu1
libgnome-control-center1 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu1 = 1:3.2.2-0ubuntu1

Could that be it?

2011-11-24 Thread W.John Guineau
Hi David,

Yes, NVIDIA with TwinView.

Nothing in my xsession-errors about UScreen at all. I renamed the old
one, logged out and then back in again and ran the System-
Settings-Displays and attached the resulting xsession-errors here.

See anything interesting in there?

what the heck happened there?

2011-11-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you're using the NVIDIA proprietary driver then the primary monitor
(the one the launcher appears on) is chosen by the
TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which I think
you change by ticking the primary monitor box in the NVIDIA control
panel.

Using the NVIDIA proprietary driver, xrandr and the Gnome Displays
control panel are totally irrelevant. Thanks NVIDIA :P

A little research seems to confirm that the primary monitor, according
to NVIDIA, is always monitor 0. And which monitor is reported as #0 is
controlled by Option TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder.

It shouldn't take me too long to prototype a new fix with support for
NVIDIA/TwinViewXinerama...

2011-11-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK, I have added NVIDIA/TwinViewXinerama support to the fix. So in
theory if you have set a primary monitor in NVIDIA X Server Settings
then Unity (4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1vv2) will now honour that.

The new version in ppa:vanvugt/unity is 4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1vv2 and is
building. When it is published, please try it and let me know how it
goes.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-11-04 Thread Zordid
Thanks Daniel - will try that.
But since this fix was not there at the time of release, I rearranged my whole
set up - moved the laptop to the right of my main monitor so the launcher will
be in front of me... :-(

Now: I got a new problem, also associated with the honoring of the
primary monitor setting: the pop-up notifications unity displays are
always on the right edge of the VIRTUAL, the complete desktop. But that
is far, far away from where I notice it! So: it is more or less useless!

My wish: the primary monitor as set in NVIDEA X Server Settings must:
a) display the launcher
b) display the notifications

Is that possible? Where should I file this bug??? Could you also fix
that?

I have Nvidia Twinview setup with my main monitor on the right side of

the launcher. Next problem is workspace switcher. On the main monitor is

@zordid, I think the issue with notifications only appearing on the top
right monitor is probably logged already. Just don't know the bug
number.

@xjcook, Yes having a launcher in the middle of your monitors only
really works if you have it set to never hide. I suspect someone might
have already logged that bug back in Ubuntu 11.04 when it was still
possible to put the launcher in the middle of the desktop.

Daniel, Bernie, I had the same issue with floating icons on drag. It was
under 11.04 where dash on primary monitor worked (the exact same monitors
config as Bernie's).
So I don't think the floating icon bug it's related to this one.

David,
When I had nvidia, proprietary driver, I succeed writing down Option
Primary true under relevant Monitor section in /etc/xorg.conf.
This was under 11.04 but may help you.

Have you managed to get dual screen working under 11.10 with nvidia?

2011-11-01 Thread Bernie
Thanks Daniel for the PPA. I'm using unity=4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1vv1 and
it's doing the job. Except for a little bug.

I have 2 monitors : one left and one front (the primary). In CCSM, i
configured the Hide Launcher item to Never so that the launcher is
always visible on the left of the front screen.

Now, if I click (and hold 1 second) on an application icon of the
launcher (in order to move it inside the launcher for example), then
strangely, the icon smoothly moves to the left of the left screen. The
icon come back to the launcher on the front screen whenever I move the
mouse or I release the button.

It looks to me as if there is a ghost launcher on my left screen in
this case.

2011-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Hmm, on second thoughts that's not the same as the bug I've seen.

Although that bug is probably only visible when the fix for bug 742544
is applied, we should still treat it as a separate bug. Because the
launcher/icon code is quite separate to the code changed to fix 742544.

There may still be yet more parts of Unity which make the same bad
assumption that the launcher is always on the left-most monitor. But
they should be treated as separate bugs because the symptoms of each
will be subtly different, and so will the fix.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-11-01 Thread Aaron Mayse
Well one thing I can think of is the dodge animation will probably
look kind of weird when not on the leftmost monitor. I know the Gnome
panels used to have a problem where auto-hide would cause the panel to
hide by sliding into another monitor's view. Maybe instead of a
sliding motion, it should be more of a flipping motion, as if it
were a flat piece of glass on a hinge attached to the monitor edge.

That would probably be a design issue, but it would only apply when the
launcher can already be moved to a different monitor.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-31 Thread Tomasz Przybysz
Thanks, I did.

This is probably out of scope here but I would like to get a bit focus
about that fact. This bug with with another one (or design decision -
not sure) leads to a silly situation.

By another bug I mean notifications appear on the right most monitor (not the
primary one as they should).
In result: when considering multiple monitors setup there is no way to get dash
and notifications on the same screen. No matter how one will connect or setup
screens.

Moreover the more monitors we connect, the greater gap between the dash and
the notifications become.
Let take f.e. 3 monitor setup. The center monitor probably will be the primary
one where we would like to have both dash and the notifications.
However dash with all launchers appears on the left monitor when notifications
go to the right one leaving middle (primary) monitor 'empty' of most
focus-important things. Kind of nonsense, isn't it?

Here's the page about notifications bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-osd/+bug/331369
Pity it has 'low' priority though.

2011-10-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Tomasz, I uploaded the fix for this bug 2 weeks ago. However because I
am not an official Unity developer it has to go through a review
process, which often takes several weeks. Right now the Ubuntu
developers conference is starting too, so there are even fewer people
than usual available to review and authorize this fix for release.

2011-10-30 Thread Tomasz Przybysz
I see, Daniel.

My OS instance got heavy damage while I was messing with dpkg and apt-get.
Now I'm running on fresh install and feel rather like waiting for released
update with the fix.

Can I vote somehow as an user to make this fix more important for
reviewing?

Thank you for providing the fix and for info!

2011-10-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Tomasz, the PPA stopped working yesterday because the official ubuntu-
updates version became higher than the version in the PPA. Your system
will always choose the highest available version, even though the higher
version lacks the fix for this bug.

A quick fix is to download and install the deb files from the PPA manually:
https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/unity/+packages

I will update the PPA to resolve this problem; if not today then
certainly in the next few days.

Daniel, thanks for reply.

If you need testing or anything just write here.

Can't your fix be commited into main repo, can it?
I wander how the contribution model works in Ubuntu and why such regress can be
meet each fresh release. Of course I like Unity and general feeling of Ubuntu.
However crashing into black boot screen with no response after a minor kernel
update is not anything like welcome :/

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-28 Thread Tomasz Przybysz
Hi,

I have to ask about something really obvious. How to install the tmp fix from
ppa?
I did:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vanvugt/unity
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

got only one package upgrade xorg-something~
I see unity version is still 4.24 from original repo.

btw. I'm on ATI, any chance fix will work?

As some cases above I always use my left monitor as secondary. It's
smaller, rotated, often turned off and I use it mainly for reading docs
and stuff. No need to keep it on only for the dash launcher when some
energy could be saved.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-25 Thread Miklos Juhasz
I have an nvidia card and the one-liner patch worked fine. I applied it later
to the unity version in proposed (4.24) as well. Thank you for that!
I used the nvidia-settings tool, set up twinview and selected my screen on the
right hand side to be primary. I saved it the xorg.conf, restarted and worked.
Applying the settings without saving the xorg.conf and restart does not work
because of bug #864784

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-25 Thread joris
@Daniel

Fixed!

Thanks for your post about checking the Unity version... There is a
newer version of Unity available in the proposed repository, that I had
enabled. So it was not your version of Unity from the ppa that was
installed, but the newer version. Since I don't know how to downgrade, I
did a fresh install of 11.10 and enabled your ppa and now the fix is
working.

Stupid from me not to notice this earlier...

But thank you very much for your time and fast responses.

For your information on my fresh install the gnome display tool still
looks as in the screenshot I posted earlier, but that doesn't matter
because the Dash is on the primary screen.

2011-10-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
No problem.

If you ever want to revert to the original Unity, a command (something
like) this should work:

sudo apt-get install unity/oneiric unity-common/oneiric libunity-
core-4.0-4/oneiric unity-services/oneiric

After the first updates are released for unity in 11.10, you can then
change /oneiric to /oneiric-updates to revert back to the latest
official update version.

joris, just to be sure, please also run:

Though, given your previous output I suspect more work is required to

I installed the PPA - thanks Daniel!

While I do not see a black bar in the Displays control panel, after
restarting Unity (log out/log back in) , the launcher is on my primary
monitor.

hooray!

I'm afraid to run CCSM to set it to not dodge windows - last time I ran
CCSM in 11.10 it hosed Unity and I had to reset it to get it back... My
google'ing the CCSM stability sounded like it was not too safe to run in
11.10 yet. Is CCSM stable now?

Nice job!

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-22 Thread W.John Guineau
This bug is driving me insane. It makes Unity almost unusable for me. I
have two large monitors (24) with my primary display directly in front
of me and the second one angled to the left.

I am very mouse-centric (I use very few keyboard shortcuts) and having
to twist my neck all the way to the left monitor and target the mouse
across two displays just to switch apps, which I do frequently (I am a
software developer and use multiple concurrent apps constantly), is
literally causing me neck pain!

Why can't I just drag the launcher to the top/left/middle of the entire
display surface? That is by far the most intuitive UI behavior and would
solve the launcher placement problem i a way that works for everyone.
In 10.04 I had the launcher on my primary display, which put it in the
middle of my total display surface. I set it in CCSM to not dodge
windows so it always just stayed visible. This was ideal for my
situation. 11.10 has seriously regressed in this regard.

I am trying hard to like Unity, but I am close to installing the gnome
shell and being done with it.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-16 Thread Andrea Azzarone
I'm pretty sure I can make the Unity code clever enough to just always do the
 right thing --
If a primary monitor has been defined then use that,
else use the left-most monitor as the current Unity 4.x code does.

That makes sense.

The only hard part about this solution is that
gdk_screen_get_primary_monitor does not always give a certain answer as
to whether a primary monitor has been set at all. That's where some more
work is required.

Yeah...

What about showing the display settings panel when a new monitor is
plugged in?

2011-10-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Re: lp:~andyrock/unity/fix-742544

@Andrea, reverting all of r1609 is a bad idea. Part of r1609 is the
removal of multiple redundant calls to gdk_screen_get_primary_monitor,
which is very useful to keep.

I suggest the fix, even a temporary one, should just change
uscreen-GetPrimaryMonitor() which is (in theory) now the single
location where the primary monitor is set.

However the redesign of the Displays panel in gnome-control-center

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
To clarify, in 11.04 this was only a bug in gnome-control-center.
Because the Gnome Displays panel gave the user no way to select the
primary monitor in Gnome 2.x

In Ubuntu 11.10, the gnome-control-center issue was partially resolved,
giving the user a black bar to drag around representing the primary
monitor. However Ubuntu 11.10 also regressed with respect to Unity
because Unity no longer honours the primary monitor setting even if it
is set.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I have tagged this regression-release, but it is a regression in 11.10
with respect to Unity only.

** Tags added: regression-release

** Description changed:

+ WORKAROUND FOR 11.10:
+
+ None available right now.
+

Only 1 line of code was required in the end. But it's not the final

Where this option should be included? In ccsm?

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I did mean CCSM at the time, but I think that comment in the code is
wrong now.

I'm pretty sure I can make the Unity code clever enough to just always do the
right thing --
If a primary monitor has been defined then use that,
else use the left-most monitor as the current Unity 4.x code does.

The only hard part about this solution is that
gdk_screen_get_primary_monitor does not always give a certain answer as
to whether a primary monitor has been set at all. That's where some more
work is required.

I won't hypothesize any more, but I am confident that config options
will not be required at all.

I cannot find any monitors.xml file - neither in my Ubuntu 11.04 set up
nor in my 11.10!

How can I set the screen the launcher should be on?

I find the whole discussion here so ridiculous! Since Windows 95 you can
drag Windows' task bar where ever you like - why can't this be done in a
2011 Ubuntu?

Arghhh!

Almost there. I think the colour of the overlays needs to be
significantly different to that of the grey background or else it's
visually confusing. Perhaps black, like it is at present in Gnome 3.

Also optionally, the overlay(s) should have arrows, or something, to
indicate they are drag-able.
