[Bug 1022390] Re: Apps lock on default Ubuntu desktop. No problem with XUbuntu desktop.
Added note: Installing alsa-hda-dkms from ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily on 20120715 fixed the sound problem. These instructions were found in this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1950165.html): --- sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install alsa-hda-dkms Reboot. Go to System Settings > Sound and adjust settings, test speakers. --- Both Thunderbird and Firefox work as expected now. This bug report deals with applications locking up on the Ubuntu desktop. It is obvious this was due to sound difficulties. However, even though the Original Poster's problems have been solved, is there still a bug in the Ubuntu desk top? That is, is it still a bug that the Thunderbird and Firefox applications locked up when Ubuntu's sound was compromised? -thanks -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1022390 Title: Apps lock on default Ubuntu desktop. [Bug 1022390] Re: Apps lock on default Ubuntu desktop. No problem with XUbuntu desktop.
Added note: I can get the Ubutntu Sound tool to lock similar to Thunderbird and Firefox. I re-installed pulseaudio then pulled up the System Settings GUI menu. I can use many of the sub menus such as Printing. However, if I click on Sound the new sound sub menu never shows up and the System Settings windows darkens. None of the System Settings buttons respond. I can still kill the System Settings GUI menu using the Ubuntu Kill button at the top of the application window. I removed pulseaudio then pulled up the System Settings GUI menu. I can click on Sound and the new Sound meun appears as expected. However the Output volume slider as well as the Input level slider are disabled. Of course, w/o pulseaudio, there is no sound when the Sound Test button is pressed. -thanks. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1022390 Title: Apps lock on default Ubuntu desktop. [Bug 1022390] Re: Apps lock on default Ubuntu desktop. No problem with XUbuntu desktop.
I'll try and answer your questions: > 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Memory 3.4GBytes Processor AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics x 2 Graphics VESA: DVST OS type 32-bit Disk 305.0GByte HP Pavilion g6-2123us After the fresh Ubuntu install, I installed mozilla's Thunderbird and Firefox. > 2. the behavior you expected, and I was expecting the applications not to lock up. I was also expecting to be able to use sound when operating an HP g6-2123us booted up in Ubuntu. > 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). The Thunderbird and Firefox applications locked up during use. Thunderbird would usually lockup upon accessing the 1st email. Firefox locked up if right clicking on a URL in a web page. I might be mistaken, but I think if either application intended to use the audio hardware, they would lock up (the application's window would darken and the application's buttons would be unresponsive). Note, even if the application's buttons were unresponsive, the Ubuntu window buttons (kill, minimize & full-screen) were usable. If one clicked on the Ubuntu kill button a pop up would appear saying the application was unresponsive and asked if the application should be forcefully killed. Further information: The /var/log/syslog was inspected. It appears that the pulseaudio daemon failed to start on boot up: --- Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295591] Process pulseaudio (pid: 4898, ti=e9df task=e1c0bf20 task.ti=e9df) Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295594] Stack: Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295597] 0010 000240d0 eb78c180 e9f35c00 e9df1d14 f8793de2 0080 e9f35c00 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295610] ebb2a100 e9df1d14 f87003b7 e9f35c00 eb7de000 eb0a4e2c Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295622] eb78c180 e9f35c00 eb7dc24c e9df1d40 f86e9b73 0080 f7132238 eb78c180 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295633] Call Trace: Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295642] [] hdmi_pcm_open+0x32/0x210 [snd_hda_codec_hdmi] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295657] [] ? snd_pcm_hw_constraint_step+0x37/0x40 [snd_pcm] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295666] [] azx_pcm_open+0x1d3/0x280 [snd_hda_intel] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295678] [] snd_pcm_open_substream+0x53/0x90 [snd_pcm] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295689] [] snd_pcm_open+0xba/0x240 [snd_pcm] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295699] [] ? try_to_wake_up+0x190/0x190 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295710] [] ? snd_lookup_minor_data+0x44/0x60 [snd] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295722] [] snd_pcm_playback_open+0x3b/0x50 [snd_pcm] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295733] [] snd_open+0xd4/0x260 [snd] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295740] [] ? kobj_lookup+0xfc/0x1a0 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295748] [] chrdev_open+0xb5/0x1e0 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295757] [] __dentry_open+0x25e/0x310 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295763] [] ? cdev_put+0x20/0x20 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295769] [] vfs_open+0x3a/0x50 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295775] [] nameidata_to_filp+0x39/0x40 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295782] [] do_last+0x367/0x660 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295787] [] path_openat+0xa4/0x350 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295794] [] ? fsnotify_put_event+0x44/0x60 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295800] [] ? fsnotify_put_event+0x44/0x60 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295806] [] do_filp_open+0x31/0x80 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295814] [] ? strncpy_from_user+0x38/0x70 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295820] [] ? alloc_fd+0xa3/0xe0 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295826] [] do_sys_open+0xe1/0x1f0 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295839] [] ? snd_ctl_elem_add_user+0x70/0x70 [snd] Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295846] [] sys_open+0x2e/0x40 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295854] [] sysenter_do_call+0x12/0x28 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295857] Code: 8d b6 00 00 00 00 0f b7 16 83 e8 02 83 c6 02 66 89 17 83 c7 02 eb 9f 8d b4 26 00 00 00 00 55 89 e5 56 53 83 ec 08 3e 8d 74 26 00 <8b> b0 84 00 00 00 89 c1 85 f6 7e 2b 8d 98 2c 0e 00 00 31 c0 39 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295929] EIP: [] hinfo_to_pin_index+0xd/0x60 [snd_hda_codec_hdmi] SS:ESP 0068:e9df1cc8 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295939] CR2: 0084 Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo kernel: [ 8335.295944] ---[ end trace 698f71d3b8b827c9 ]--- Jul 13 15:24:05 frodo pulseaudio[4895]: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed. --- Here is a list of audio devices on the PCI bus: lspci | grep -i audio 00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 9902 00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Hudson Azalia Controller (rev 01) Now I am thinkin

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
There is a possibility that the pulseaudio daemon is either the direct or indirect cause of applications locking up. It was observed that the pulseaudio daemon failed to start during the Ubuntu boot up. The package was subsequently removed and the default Ubuntu desktop was used. In this configuration Thunderbird, Firefox and other applications worked as expected. Before the windows of these application eventually darken and the application locked up. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1022390 Title: Apps lock on default Ubuntu desktop.
