[Bug 1063073] Re: adding back kernel flavour 386
Doing some further research on google i find that there actually *is* some functionality that the geode is missing to be a full 686 processor. It seems that other distros either have a 486 kernel flavour or kernel patches for 686 which are able to emulate the missing functionality. Also I am running debian now on the boards since two weeks and the problem didnt occur again. Im not sure if I am supposed to open a new bug for this but I'd like to give it another try to either suggest 1) implementing the nopl patch, which might be this: http://notes.osuv.de/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=geode_i686.patch http://notes.osuv.de/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=geode_nopl.patch or 2) implement a startup check in the current 686 kernel, so that i wont boot on a geode processor thank you -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1063073 Title: adding back kernel flavour 386 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1063073/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Changing to Confirmed, as apport-collect makes no sense in the context of this bug. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1063073 Title: adding back kernel flavour 386 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1063073/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1063073] Re: adding back kernel flavour 386
As you can see from the doc, Ubuntu devs want to support fewer kernel flavors, not more. They've even eliminated the non-PAE kernel, which is needed for some fairly moden CPU's like some Atom's and Pentium M's (some users are still kicking and screaming about that). i486 is even more of a niche, so don't hold your breath. At least Debian has you covered. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1063073 Title: adding back kernel flavour 386 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1063073/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1063073] Re: adding back kernel flavour 386
Okay, so a quick Google appears to confirm that the Geode LX CPU supports 686 instructions. You should be able to boot Ubuntu 11.10. Also note that Lubuntu and Xubuntu 12.04 use a non-PAE kernel by default for 32-bit installs. Please try to boot/install Lubuntu 12.04 and let us know what happens. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1063073 Title: adding back kernel flavour 386 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1063073/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1063073] Re: adding back kernel flavour 386
Thank you Dave, I wonder why I didn't check that. You are right, the english wiki article about the amd geode also mentions full x86 compatibility for the geode LX but I am a bit confused about that now. It seems that the problem is more complex then. I am already running 12.04 without X which i installed on the CF-card using debootstrap and chroot. It boots and runs on the alix but it crashes every other week without any error message in the syslog or any error in the kernel log at all. sometimes its completely dead, sometimes i can still ping it and switch terminals but not log in any more or perform any action with it and it has to be rebooted. then it runs again for another week or two. i have been completely unsuccessfull so far to link it to any action that could trigger the crash. I discussed this with some people on ubuntuusers.de and the response i got was that the geode LX would only be fully compatible with a 486 kernel. It was said that theoretically it could boot and run with a 686 kernel but crash if some functionality would be used that asks for something that the processor doesnt understand. So far this has been the best explanation of the situtation as it is happening all the same on three different alix boards since some months which all have been running extremely well with voyage linux (debian) before, since 2007. Im waiting for your suggestions and otherwise switch back to voyage then. Moving to the kernel package. This will most likely be rejected, but I'll leave the Kernel team to give you the official reason why. ** Package changed: ubuntu = linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1063073 Title: adding back kernel flavour 386 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1063073/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
