I had exactly the same problem as squealermusic above (crash on record action
with Assertion `dsp-fd 0' failed).
Ubuntu 12.04 and Scratch 1.4 on IBM machine with Intel HDA integrated audio.
After a lot of troubleshooting I stumbled on the solution:
I picked up a driver from here:

Getting this crash on two laptops- One running Ubuntu 12.10 and one
12.04.
Playing sounds is also choppy- don't know if the two issues are related.

Getting this crash as well. It happens on Ubuntu 12.04 running Scratch
1.4. Here's the action: record a new sound, then play the sound. When
finished playing the sound that was just recorded, hit record button.
When record button is pressed Scratch crashes and disappears.
