@Khaos: Hi, a) yes i'm using bumblebee/optirun with standard config, using virtualgl, installed as follows: sudo apt-get install bumblebee virtualgl As i far as i understood with such hardware, the screen is managed directly by the intel hardware (the nvidia does not have direct access to it) I haven't tried to use other nvidia driver, or even the last beta proprietary driver which always activates the nvidia GPU b) i will check and revert, others hotkeys like sound (with OSD notification), suspend works, haven't yet tried the wireless on/off @Dimitri: Hi, mine is a KV55VD-SX613H, i have installed last Bios version (Version 411, 2013.04.03) before any test i will recheck using this workaround and try to found useful traces. @Guilhem: Thanks for your reply! I have bumblebee too installed and I run when I want high graphics the programs from terminal with the optirun cmd. I don't used the beta propertiary for the nvidia because I don't know if I must uninstall first bumblebee in case of conflicts. I will test it when it will be stable. My wireless key is not working ok. Sometimes working with some delay, sometimes is not working at all and I don't know why. My laptop is: ASUS K55VD (A55VD-SX406H) (I7-3630M, RAM 8GB, nvidia GEFORCE 610M 2GB) as I wrote when I reported this bug. I hope to find a better solution for this! There is script: /etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh But it contains: KEYS_DIR=/sys/class/leds/asus\:\:kbd_backlight So i don't think this being used by the system, does anyone knows which script takes this in charge ? Will run into some tests with script, using the command acpi_listen you get the related acpi even when hotkeys are being pressed. Ok, i got it to work :-) Using acpi_listen, my brightness hotkeys give me (down and up): video LCDD 0087 video LCDD 0086 I edited and adapted: cat /etc/acpi/events/asus-keyboard-backlight-down # /etc/acpi/events/asus-keyboard-backlight-down # This is called when the user presses the key brightness # down button and calls /etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh for # further processing. event=video LCDD 0087 action=/etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh down cat /etc/acpi/events/asus-keyboard-backlight-up # /etc/acpi/events/asus-keyboard-backlight-up # This is called when the user presses the key brightness # up button and calls /etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh for # further processing. event=video LCDD 0086 action=/etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh up Note: I tested with the complete line given by acpi_listen but did not work, then re-tested without the last 0 series and it worked. I edited and adapted: /etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh And changed the KEYS_DIR to match the acpi_video0: # this directory is a symlink on my machine: KEYS_DIR=/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 The default dir was pointing to a led dir, which does not exist in my case, an other exists but running echo does not work. Hi all, I have an Asus K55VD, running Ubuntu 13.04 (gnome shell version) and had the same issue with controling brightness using hotkeys. The only working workaround is to add acpi_osi= next to the default grub line in /etc/default/grub. In this case, under /sys/class i see: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight Using echo n brightness can manage screen brightness with success. An other workaround almost works: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AsusZenbookPrime#Ubuntu_13.04 Using: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=splash quiet acpi_osi='!Windows 2012' At session startup, the screen in middle brightness. Using hotkeys works with Ubuntu notification working, but every hotkeys press required a few seconds to work, if you want to go from minimum to maximum a very very long time would be required... So not usable, still the best workaround is using acpi_osi= I have also tried various settings like: acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=legacy For both cased, hotkeys does not work, i have tried using a custom script in /etc/acpi with associated events (got them using acpi_listen) but did not worked. Using =acpi_osi works good, but what could explain that the gnome daemon does not recognize hotkeys when pressed ? This workaround works the best for me: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=splash quiet acpi_osi='!Windows 2012' All hotkeys (sleep, wireless, brightness, video output, touchpad, volume) just work! And there is no need for me to wait some seconds for settings to be applied. With brightness keys I just hit the button and at the same time brightness changes. I wait some seconds with wireless and touchpad - these keys work not so quickly. But volume and brightmess keys work immediately. I'm using Xubuntu 13.04 and i have a bit different model of laptop (ASUS K55VD-SX205R). Christopher, I didn't make a BIOS update because I don't want to brick the laptop, because I listened that there are many problems with the UEFI enabled laptops and the bios. Maybe after the bios upgrade I can't boot to Win8 or Ubuntu. Is there a safe way to do that? Christopher (penalvch), thanks for your reply. If I upgrade via Windows 8 (I have dualboot Ubuntu 12.10/Win 8 preinstalled) it will damage the UEFI/Bios settings that I have? I'm afraid of bricking or damaging uefi settings for ubuntu dual boot. The problem is partially fixed with acpi_osi= mode but without unity notifications when changing the brightness. Is there a way to enable notification for this operation? Recently I've got Asus K55VD with Win7 preinstalled and installed on it Xubuntu 12.10 in dual boot mode. I've updated BIOS upto the latest version (406) before installing Xubuntu. This BIOS update changed nothing with this issue. The acpi_osi= setting fixed the issue but with no notifications in Unity when pressing the fn +f5, fn + f6.
