[Bug 118221] Re: kernel 2.6.20-16 nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new won't load
Wilbur: There's definitely something in your files which looks hand edited but it's not going to result in this particular problem (although it may cause you a different problem sometime down the line, possibly when you go to upgrade that Ubuntu install to 7.10...). At any rate I think you're right that something racy is happening in /lib .Now technically this has turned into a support query rather a bug report - How do I do software RAID0 (oh and that scares me too. RAID0 - Yikes!). As such you might be better off using one of the support methods described on http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport . At a random guess (given I don't know how your system is set up) I suspect you will need to add raid0 and md to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and then rebuild initrd. Without that the system might not know how to do RAID when it is doing its bootstrapping. This may then allow you to mount your root partition directly. I don't use RAID myself on my Ubuntu machines so I'm in a poor position to advise you but you might be able to glean some more information from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/RAID1 (I'd try and stick with grub and since you are using software linux raid you don't need to have dmraid etc.). It's probably a good idea to retitle this bug too. -- kernel 2.6.20-16 nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new won't load https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118221 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 118221] Re: kernel 2.6.20-16 nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new won't load
No, I never followed an online guide to enable the binary drivers. I only used the restricted driver manager and synaptic. I just installed the new 2.6.20-16.29 linux and I have the same problems, maybe it is because there doesn't seem to be a new 16.29 restricted drivers? Is there a possible race condition. Is it possible that these are being done before the mount of /lib to /md0/lib? [Bug 118221] Re: kernel 2.6.20-16 nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new won't load
I changed my fstab so that /lib was not being mounted on /md0/lib. Then I rebooted and rsync'ed what was in /md0/lib into /lib After that the system boots fine, my cdrom is visible and my /dev/sdc is also visible. So something is different between the -15 and -16 kernel in how soon the /lib mount was performed, or in when the modules were loaded. [Bug 118221] Re: kernel 2.6.20-16 nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new won't load
This was a clean install of feisty on new hard drives from the final version of the Feisty alternate CD. Originally I just used the restricted driver manager to enable the nvidia driver, then I just did the updates via synaptic. After the -16 kernel update, where I had installed the restricted drivers and the nvidia-glx-new (and the nvidia didn't work) I went round and round installing/unintalling and trying the three different versions of the nvidia driver, all using synaptic. I never tried t use the Nvidia binary driver from nvidia. I never tried anything like automatix or easy ubuntu. I think that we are closing in on the solution. I noticed that after running sudo sh -x /sbin/lrm-manager, that the volatile directory was full of modules. I tried to re-start X and it worked!!! I then rebooted, same problem, no X. The volatile directory was empty as well. I then, from the command line ran sudo sh -x /sbin/lrm-manager, then startx and it worked!!! Now I just have the issue of not working with my PS2 mouse and not seeing my /dev/sdc hard drive (both of which work fine if I boot with the -15 kernel. I hope that these are clues that will help. [Bug 118221] Re: kernel 2.6.20-16 nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new won't load
you'll neeed to show the output of dmesg so we can see what it says about the NVIDIA module. Also, did you disable the nvidia restricted module within /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common file? put nv within the quotes and it will load the nvidia-glx-new driver, that's how I got my GeForce 6200 128mb to work anyway. And yes, I am using the 16 kernel as well as compiz. Also, you are aware that you may need to uninstall it and reinstall it after the kernel update correct? First make a copy of your xorg.conf file and then I used these commands: sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx* nvidia-kernel-* sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-new sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf (NOTE: this is just putting a copy of the xorg.conf file that you made prior to uninstalling nvidia back in it's place, use the name of whatever you chose when you backed it up) ctrl-alt-backspace then you should now be using the new driver. If you can't get into X-server at all, then after X fails, just login to the command line and perform the steps above and hten do this sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start If that doesn't work, well again need to see the dmesg output. -- kernel 2.6.20-16 nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new won't load https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118221 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

When a nvidia proprietary driver is install and the kernel is updated, the restricted modules are not updated automatically. Could you install linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic?
