[Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
How to reproduce this: 1) go to /etc/init.d 2) rename mountall.sh to disabled-mountall.sh So perhaps a broken symlink in the /etc/rc* levels causes this? [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
Happened to me too, and too after upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04. Since we're using crypttab with the keyscript= option, we can't yet use systemd, and it seems like the system affected can boot once in ~5 times fine, suggesting there is indeed a race condition somewhere inside upstart (?) Despite wasting 5 hours of my time yesterday I can't yet gather enough data for a consistent bug report. PS. Considering systemd's inability to coexist with the keyscript= option - maybe we guys should raise a petition so that we can finally be heard? It's a very longstanding issue systemd developers are intentionally turning their heads away from. [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
I experienced this problem today on my Dell Latitude D630 laptop with a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.10, installed today. The problem came up immediately after I installed Intel GM 965 Graphics driver intel-linux-graphics installer_1.0.8-0intel1_amd64.deb When I shut down my laptop following this install, during shutdown there was a kernel crash. I can enter my Ubuntu installation using the Grub screen recovery mode option. In recovery mode, the system seems to run perfectly, better than ever before, which proves that the Intel graphics driver update I installed fixed the problems plaguing Linux Mint and Ubuntu on this laptop. I may have to reinstall my system to get rid of having to enter Ubuntu via Grup recovery mode. Now that there is a fix to the Intel GM 965 Graphics driver problem bugging thousands of users, somebody at Ubuntu should get this fixed. [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
I have got this problem upgrading three machines from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10, two nVidia, one AMD. It's now not possible to log into the AMD one - the desktop is missing and the system is frozen not responding to anything. I have switched to XFCE on that machine and its working fine. The nVidia machines freeze after about 10 mins on standard graphics. They are almost usable if I use the nVidia drivers, but then after 10 minutes the background will stop updating so that moving any windows around leaves an annoying trail, and when minimizing a window it appears as if it is still there. I don't if any of that is related to this bug or not. I'm also suffering from bug 1359439. [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
I just upgraded a system from Kubuntu 14.04 to Kubuntu 14.10, and the broken pipe error popped up. Some questions for the suffering populace: 1. Does the error occur with 14.04 or only with 14.10? 2. Does it occur with 14.10 installed directly or only with 14.10 upgraded from 14.04? In my experience it is specifically associated with upgrading 14.04 to 14.10 but is not associated with specific video hardware since it has been reported both for Nvidia video and Intel video. I've been trying without success to find that post again to see just what it was that this update was supposed to have fixed. [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
I too get this message in Kubuntu 14.10. I have a Lenovo laptop with Intel integrated graphics. I actually have two Kubuntu 14.10's in different partitions on this machine. I'm writing this from what I'll call P1, which I had abandoned because the partition was too small for my needs. So I created P2, which has plenty of space. P2 was running just fine for a couple of months when it suddenly started misbehaving badly. After a reboot (to P2) I got just a black screen, though I was able to get to a virtual console with Ctl-Alt-F1 and thus get much more information about the system. When I booted P2 via a slightly different route I got the error while reading from descriptor message. So I now have P1, which works but is not fully usable, and P2, which gives me a black screen. That opens up some potential ways of diagnosing the problem since I can compare the two systems. In particular, I ran dmsg in both systems and compared the two outputs to find the first significant difference. I found this sequence in P2: [1.143424] [drm] Replacing VGA console driver [1.143428] checking generic (e000 41) vs hw (e000 1000) [1.143429] fb: switching to inteldrmfb from VESA VGA [1.143449] Console: switching to colour dummy device 80x25 But in P1 (the correct one) the lines 428 and 429 are absent. This probably points directly to the bug if only I knew how to interpret it. Most of this is way over my head. Man, do I envy and admire all you who are light years ahead of this 59 yr. old who never touched a computer until a few yrears ago. I'm posting this for the many newbie users out there like me. I too was getting the init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe error in Lubuntu 14.10 with Nvidia GE 7300 Force using the recommended Nvidia 304 drivers (I got the error most of the time- but not always- although the boot always completed and I was always able to use the machine with no other errors). It just bugged me enough to start researching the error. I've read all the posts above and I'm really confused now. From the posts it seems the concensus is that its not necessarily Nvidia-related, but I decided anyhow to revert back to the basic Nouveau drivers...just for giggles and kicks the error is no more, and Lubuntu still seems to be flawless. Hmmm. Maybe this will help someone who gets the error and can't even get their machine to boot. [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
Wish I knew *WHERE* this error while reading message comes from! init can mean quite a lot. On Ubuntu flavors, /sbin/init is actually init from upstart package. But just FWIW, I've grep'd recursively (-ir) for both broken pipe and error while reading messages. None there. So this init: Error while... must come from the kernel itself. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1364630 Title: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/+bug/1364630/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
Wait... Found a match on this error message in 'io.c' which is part of libnih, which on its part is needed by /sbin/init. So if anyone wants to debug the reason of this, he should start debugging libnih (even adding a printf will do to see what's going on) and check what (illegal?) parameter is fed into it.
